Abstract:A poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) coated Li4Ti5O12 (LTO/PP) composite is synthesized by a facile and convenient approach, which involves dispersing LTO in an aqueous solution of PEDOT: PSS, followed by rotary evaporation accompanied by an ultrasonic procedure. After the coating process, LTO is covered by a homogeneous PEDOT: PSS layer, which effectively improves the electrical conductivity and processing capability of LTO to form a more homogeneous electrode sheet, and thus impart more favorable electrochemical kinetics as compared with the pristine LTO electrode. The LTO/PP electrode exhibits better reversible capacity and rate capability compared with the LTO electrode, delivering a reversible capacity of 177.2 mA h g(-1) at 0.1C and reaching a capacity of 169.1 mA h g(-1) with a capacity retention of 97.8% after 100 cycles at 0.5C. At the rate of 10C, the LTO/PP electrode delivers a capacity as high as 161.1 mA h g(-1) (91.0% of the value achieved at 0.1C), as compared to 144.5 mA h g(-1) for the pristine LTO electrode.

Abstract:Carbon coated Li4Ti5O12 (C-LTO) particles have been synthesized by hydrothermal method and high-temperature calcination process. Nanostructure and carbon-coating has been characterized in detail by X-ray diffraction (XRD), high resolution TEM (HR-TEM), selected electron diffraction (SAED), and scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) combined with X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. The prepared particles are comprised of highly crystalline spinel-type Li4Ti5O12 with the size range of 20-70 nm. HR-TEM imaging and STXM-XANES spectromicrocopy confirmed the amorphous carbon layer uniformly covered on the surface of single LTO particles with optimized content and coating thickness (~5 nm). The electrochemical performance of C-LTO particles as an anode in lithium-ion batteries is evaluated, demonstrating both improved rate capability and cycling performance, which was attributed to the enhanced electron transport/high electrical conductivity and fast lithium-ion insertion/extraction, as a result of uniform and optimized amorphous carbon coating on the C-LTO particles.

Abstract:Li4Ti5O12–Li2TiO3–TiO2 and pristine Li4Ti5O12 electrodes have been synthesized by a solid-state method. The structure and electrochemical performance of these as prepared powders have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy (RS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and the galvanostatic charge–discharge test. All samples have agglomerate structure with the primary particle size of about 1µm. Electrochemical tests demonstrate that Li4Ti5O12–Li2TiO3–TiO2 (LLT5) possesses high capacity and excellent rate capability. The improved electrochemical performance of Li4Ti5O12–Li2TiO3–TiO2 (LLT5) is clearly related to the improved electronic conductivity and lithium ion diffusivity. The high cycling performance and wide discharge voltage range, as well as simple synthesis route and low synthesis cost of the Li4Ti5O12–Li2TiO3–TiO2 (LLT5) is expected to show a potential commercial application.

Abstract:We report a facile approach for synthesizing nanocrystalline Li4Ti5O12 via sol–gel process by employing a nonionic surfactant (EO)20(PO)70(EO)20 tri-block copolymer (pluronic P123) as the chelating agent. Pure-phase Li4Ti5O12 (~100nm) with high crystallinity is obtained at a sintering temperature of 700°C. The cell assembled with this nanocrystalline Li4Ti5O12 presents high-rate capacity of 108mAh g−1 at 40C. Furthermore, the cell exhibits excellent cycling stability, retaining over 97 % of its initial capacity after 250 charge/discharge cycles at varying rates.

Abstract:In this work, the porous plate‐like Li4Ti5O12 is prepared by an economical and simple method. This advanced microstructure not only enhances its Li+ storage performance by forming lithium storage model of pseudocapacitance and intercalation reaction, but also promotes its electrochemical reaction kinetics performance, thus the enhanced electrochemical performance of is Li4Ti5O12 achieved. Spinel Li4Ti5O12 as the anode material for lithium‐ion batteries possessed "zero strain" characteristics, high safety, good stability, rapid Li+ diffusion rate, and fast charging and discharging performance, and has been used commercially. In this work, a porous plate‐like structure for Li4Ti5O12 is constructed via an economic in situ topological reaction with H1.07Ti1.73O4·H2O as the precursor. In terms of Li+ storage, not only the typical intercalation reaction of Li4Ti5O12 can be fully carried out, but also the Li+ storage in the form of pseudocapacitance can be introduced due to its porous structure, thus the enhanced Li+ storage mechanism can be realized and the reversible capacity in the work (197 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1) break the bottleneck of 175 mAh g−1 for Li4Ti5O12. In terms of electrochemical reaction kinetics, its plate‐like shape effectively avoids agglomeration of particles reducing the charge transfer resistance, and the micropores increase the diffusion rate of Li+ (3.3 times faster than the commercial Li4Ti5O12 nanoparticles). During the practical test, it can maintain the reversible capacity of 134 mAh g−1 after 1000 cycles at the huge current density of 1.0 A g−1 and show good compatibility with commercial LiFePO4 cathode, which proves its great practical potential for LIBs.

Abstract:The spinel Li4Ti5O12/rutile-TiO2@carbon (LTO-RTO@C) composites were fabricated via a hydrothermal method combined with calcination treatment employing glucose as carbon source. The carbon coating layer and the in situ formed rutile-TiO2 can effectively enhance the electric conductivity and provide quick Li+ diffusion pathways for Li4Ti5O12. When used as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, the rate capability and cycling stability of LTO-RTO@C composites were improved in comparison with those of pure Li4Ti5O12 or Li4Ti5O12/rutile-TiO2. Moreover, the potential of approximately 1.8 V rechargeable full lithium-ion batteries has been achieved by utilizing an LTO-RTO@C anode and a LiFePO4@N-doped carbon cathode.

Abstract:An industrial submicron-sized Fe2O3 with no special shape was decorated by a multi-layer coating of oxygen-deficient TiO2-x and conducting polymer PEDOT (poly 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene). A facile sol-gel method followed by an EDOT polymerization process was adopted to synthesize the hierarchical coating composite. The microstructure and phase composition were characterized using an X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In particular, the existence state of PEDOT was determined using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and a thermogravimetric (TG) analysis. The characterization results indicated the dual phase was well-coated on the Fe2O3 and its thickness was nano scale. Electrochemical characterization indicated that the multi-layer coating was helpful for significantly enhancing the cycle stability of the Fe2O3, and its electrochemical performance was even better than that of the single-layer coating samples. The synergistic effects of the ceramic phase and conducting polymer were demonstrated to be useful for improving electrochemical properties. The obtained FTP-24 sample exhibited a specific discharge capacity of 588.9 mAh/g after 360 cycles at a current density of 100 mA/g, which effectively improved the intrinsic cycling performance of the Fe2O3, with a corresponding discharge capacity of 50 mAh/g after 30 cycles.

Abstract:A facile hydrothermal approach has been developed to synthesize the nanostructured dual phase Li4Ti5O12/TiO2 composite. The fabrication process simply involves the hydrothermal treatment of tetrabutyl titanate with LiOH in glycerol-water solution and a subsequent calcination procedure. The calcination treatment at 500 degrees C leads to the phase evolution from Li1.81H0.19Ti2O5 center dot nH(2)O to Li4Ti5O12/TiO2 composite with a particle size of about 30 nm. It is found that glycerol as chelating agent plays an important role in the formation of TiO2. The Li4Ti5O12 and anatase TiO2 nano-composite exhibits rich hierarchical pores and a specific surface area of 91.88 m(2)g (1), delivers ultrahigh rate performance of over 150 mA h g (1) at 20 C, as well as superior capacity retention of 151.4 mAh g (1) after 100 cycles at 1 C. It is therefore concluded that Li4Ti5O12/TiO2 nano-composite is a promising candidate for applications in high rate lithium ion batteries. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Very large area, uniform TiO2@ carbon composite nanofibers were easily prepared by thermal pyrolysis and oxidization of electrospun titanium(IV) isopropoxide/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers in argon. The composite nanostructures exhibit the unique feature of having TiO2 nanocrystals encapsulated inside a porous carbon matrix. The unique orderly-bonded nanostructure, porous characteristics, and highly conductive carbon matrix favour excellent electrochemical performance of the TiO2@ carbon nanofiber electrode. The TiO2@ carbon hybrid nanofibers exhibited highly reversible capacity of 206 mAh g(-1) up to 100 cycles at current density of 30 mA g(-1) and excellent cycling stability, indicating that the composite is a promising anode candidate for Li-ion batteries.
A synergistic effect of lithium titanate/pristine graphene composite with enhanced lithium storage capability

Abstract:Ameliorating the electronic conductivity and lithium‐ion diffusion coefficient (DLi+) of lithium titanate (Li4Ti5O12) electrode is of great significance for realizing high‐performance anode in lithium‐ion batteries. Herein, a synergistic combination of Li4Ti5O12 nanoparticles and highly conductive pristine graphene (PG) sheets was designed to obtain enhanced lithium storage performance through a simple hydrothermal method, in which the PG was modified with polyvinyl pyrrolidone. The surface modification of Li4Ti5O12 nanoparticles and PG was instrumental in improving the interaction between the two components, leading to the close attachment of Li4Ti5O12 nanoparticles and the PG. Mechanisms underlying the favorable effects of PG for Li4Ti5O12 were demonstrated by density functional theory calculations, illustrating that the introduction of PG significantly enhances the electronic conductivity of Li4Ti5O12. Moreover, the synergistic effect of Li4Ti5O12 nanoparticles and PG endows the composite with high DLi+ (7.99 × 10−14 cm2/s) and electron conductive networks. Consequently, the as‐prepared Li4Ti5O12/PG electrode manifests outstanding rate performance (133 mAh/g at 8 C) and remarkable cyclability (150.1 mAh/g at 0.5 C), better than pure Li4Ti5O12 electrode. Even after cycling 1000 times at 10 C, the Li4Ti5O12/PG electrode yields a discharge capacity of 118.8 mAh/g with merely 0.006% capacity decay per cycle. Our study offers a versatile way for the synthesis of high‐performance Li4Ti5O12‐based composites.

Abstract:Spinel Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) is a promising anode material of lithium ion batteries for electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles due to its long cycle life, well-known stable structure, and high safety. Whereas, the electronic conductivity of spinel LTO is intrinsically low. To circumvent this drawback, composites of Li4Ti5O12/TiO2/Carbon/Carbon nanotubes (LTO/TiO2/C/CNTs) are prepared by a novel wet-chemical method (reversed-phase microemulsion method), including high electronic conductive CNTs and excess TiO2. The presence of carbon can suppress the growth of LTO particles and lead the appearance of TiO2 during synthesis process. The average particle size of LTO is about 30 nm. The LTO/TiO2/C/CNTs composites deliver exceptional electrochemical performance in the voltage window 1.0 -2.5V. It presents a discharge capacity of 224 mAh.g(-1) at 0.15 C and 95 mAh.g(-1) at a high current rate of 24C (4.2 A.g(-1)). It is found that the TiO2 not only has electrochemical activity but also results in interfacial effect to hugely increase its rate performance. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Nanoporous Li4Ti5O12 (N-LTO) was prepared by sol–gel method using monodisperse polystyrene spheres as a template and followed by calcination process. The as-prepared N-LTO has a spinel structure, large special surface area, and nanoporous structure with the pore average diameter of about 100 nm and wall thickness of 50 nm. Electrochemical experiments show that N-LTO exhibits a high initial discharge capacity of 189 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C rate cycled between 0.5 and 3.0 V and excellent capacity retention of 170 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles. EIS and CV analysis show that N-LTO has a higher mobility for Li+ diffusion and a higher exchange current density, indicating an improved electrochemical performance. It is believed that the nanoporous structure has a larger electrode/electrolyte contact area, resulting in better electrochemical properties at high charge/discharge rates.

Lychee-like TiO2@Fe2O3 Core-Shell Nanostructures with Improved Lithium Storage Properties as Anode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:In this study, lychee-like TiO2@Fe2O3 microspheres with a core-shell structure have been prepared by coating Fe2O3 on the surface of TiO2 mesoporous microspheres using the homogeneous precipitation method. The structural and micromorphological characterization of TiO2@Fe2O3 microspheres has been carried out using XRD, FE-SEM, and Raman, and the results show that hematite Fe2O3 particles (7.05% of the total mass) are uniformly coated on the surface of anatase TiO2 microspheres, and the specific surface area of this material is 14.72 m2 g−1. The electrochemical performance test results show that after 200 cycles at 0.2 C current density, the specific capacity of TiO2@Fe2O3 anode material increases by 219.3% compared with anatase TiO2, reaching 591.5 mAh g−1; after 500 cycles at 2 C current density, the discharge specific capacity of TiO2@Fe2O3 reaches 273.1 mAh g−1, and its discharge specific capacity, cycle stability, and multiplicity performance are superior to those of commercial graphite. In comparison with anatase TiO2 and hematite Fe2O3, TiO2@Fe2O3 has higher conductivity and lithium-ion diffusion rate, thereby enhancing its rate performance. The electron density of states (DOS) of TiO2@Fe2O3 shows its metallic nature by DFT calculations, revealing the essential reason for the high electronic conductivity of TiO2@Fe2O3. This study presents a novel strategy for identifying suitable anode materials for commercial lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Li4Ti5O12 as one of the commercialized materials, is famous for its excellent reversibility, but also suffered from two drawbacks- low theoretical capacity and difficulty in SOC estimation. In this study, we report a Li4Ti5O12 nanowire/Fe3O4 nanoparticle compound synthesized by hydrothermal method as anode material for lithium ion battery. By in-situ synthesizing Fe3O4 nanoparticles on the surface of Li4Ti5O12 nanowire, particle size of Fe3O4 is remarkably reduced and this resulting in good reversibility of electrode. Moreover, this Li4Ti5O12 nanowire/Fe3O4 nanoparticle compound exhibits much larger capacity than pure-phase Li4Ti5O12. And most importantly, the Li4Ti5O12 nanowire/Fe3O4 nanoparticle compound displays a slope voltage profile, which makes the voltage based SOC estimation much easier than Li4Ti5O12.

Abstract:We have reported a straightforward strategy to fabricate Li4Ti5O12 composites coated with N-doped carbon layer by using NH3 as N source and sugar as C source, which is a benefit for optimizing carbon layer thickness and tuning atomic ratio of N/C. The composite was synthesized by a conventional solid state reaction with ball milled mixture of TiO2, Li2CO3, and sugar as the precursor, then followed by a high temperature annealing in the atmosphere of Ar and NH3. The choice of titanium source has an impact on the Li4Ti5O12 surface morphology as well as electrochemical properties. N-doped TiO2 can lead to the generation of uniform N-doped C-coating layer, resulting in improved electrochemical performances at high current rate. The N-doped C-coating Li4Ti5O12 obtained by using Anatase TiO2 produces a serrated thin carbon layer, showing the best electrochemical behaviors with the discharge capacity of 100 mAh g(-1) at high rate of 24 C and 92.2% of initial capacity after 800 cycles at 12 C, which should be one of the promising anode materials for hybrid electric vehicles. The synergistic effects of the ceramic phase and conducting polymer were demonstrated to be useful for improving electrochemical properties. The obtained FTP-24 sample exhibited a specific discharge capacity of 588.9 mAh/g after 360 cycles at a current density of 100 mA/g, which effectively improved the intrinsic cycling performance of the Fe2O3, with a corresponding discharge capacity of 50 mAh/g after 30 cycles.

Abstract:Li4Ti5O12/TiO2 composites were synthesized and characterized by XRD,SEM,EIS and charge-discharge cycling tests. It proves that the composite product contained an appropriate amount of TO2 exhibits a good capacity and an excellent rate capability,the one containing an 10% amount of TO2 displays a reversible specific capacity of approximately 168 mAh/g at the rate of 0.5 C and 139 mAh/g at 5 C during the voltage range of 0.6-2 V versus Li+/Li.In addition,a lithium intercalation mechanism of the composite was proposed and it analyzed the effect of different amount of titanium dioxide on the product.

Abstract:NiO/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) films are prepared by chemical bath deposition and electrodeposition techniques using nickel foam as the substrate. These composite films are porous, and constructed by many interconnected nanoflakes. As anode materials for lithium ion batteries, the NiO/PEDOT films exhibit weaker polarization and better cycling performance as compared to the bare NiO film. Among these composite films, the NiO/PEDOT film deposited after 2 CV cycles has the best cycling performance, and its specific capacity after 50 cycles at the current density of 2C is 520mAhg−1. The improvements of these electrochemical properties are attributed to the PEDOT, a highly conductive polymer, which covers on the surfaces of the NiO nanoflakes, forming a conductive network and thus enhances the electrical conduction of the electrode.
