Molybdenum-doped zinc oxide: enhanced thermoelectric performances and unprecedented mechanical strengthening used for smart meters

Abstract:This study investigates the thermoelectric and mechanical properties of molybdenum (Mo)-doped zinc oxide (ZnO), revealing a synergistic interplay between electronic transport optimization and unexpected mechanical enhancements. Through strategic Mo doping, electrical conductivity is significantly improved due to a rise in carrier concentration, accompanied by a reduction in carrier mobility and a moderate decrease in the absolute Seebeck coefficient. The doping introduces impurity energy levels, modulating the Fermi level and electronic density of states, which, in turn, impacts thermal and electronic transport. Notably, the thermal conductivity, particularly the lattice component, is suppressed, benefiting from lattice softening indicated by a decline in Young's modulus. Counterintuitively, amidst these changes, Vickers hardness is found to increase, pointing to novel hardening mechanisms. The optimized balance between these properties yields a peak figure of merit ( ZT ) of ~ 0.396 at 873 K, underscoring the potential of Mo-doped ZnO for thermoelectric applications. This work underscores the dual achievement of enhancing thermoelectric conversion efficiency and mechanical robustness, providing a compelling platform for the development of high-performance, durable thermoelectric materials. Further research is warranted to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of the observed hardness enhancement and to refine doping strategies for even greater thermoelectric efficiency.
