Abstract:Transition metal-catalyzed direct functionalization of C-H bonds has recently emerged as a powerful strategy for the construction of carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds. Among various metals employed, base metal copper has attracted significant attention owing to its relatively low cost, abundance, and versatile reactivity. This review aims to comprehensively summarize the recent advances in copper-mediated (both stoichiometric and catalytic) chelation-assisted functionalization of unactivated C-H bonds.

Abstract:Compounds containing aryl structures are important organic synthesis intermediates,which are widely present in a large family of natural products and bioactive molecules.In recent years,direct asymmetric functionalization of benzylic C(sp3)-H bond for the efficient construction of arene and hetero-arene motifs with high stereoselectivity has drawn widespread concern from chemical community.Among the various strategies,small molecule-catalyzed metal-free functionalization of benzylic C(sp3)-H bond represents a more challenging but promising transformations.This review is intended to summarize and discuss the most recent advances in this area.

Abstract:The past decades have witnessed the great progress of copper-catalyzed C — H functionalization reactions, which have shown great potential in synthesizing multi-functionalized organic compounds. In the present review, the recent devel-opment of Cu(I)/Cu(II) catalyzed sp, sp 2 and sp 3 C — H bond functionalizations since 2008 is systematically summarized. Be-sides of the reaction conditions and substrate scopes for different C — H functionalizations, the reported mechanistic studies were also summarized and discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Copper‐catalyzed CN bond formation by CH functionalization has gained increasing attention in recent years, but no review systematically and comprehensively summarizes the references in this field. Herein, we summarized the advances in this field covering literatures from 2008 to 2020, and classified this summary into sp 2 CH functionalization and sp 3 CH functionalization. For each example, the reaction conditions, substrate scope, yield, and if possible, the mechanistic scheme are displayed, and sometimes are compared with similar reactions. At last, the development prospect of this domain is definitely expected to be bright.

Abstract:During the last two decades, impressive advancements have been achieved in transition metal‐catalyzed chelation‐assisted C—H functionalization reaction. While reactions in this field are still dominated by precious 4d or 5d metals (e.g., Pd, Rh, Ir), the 3d base metals (e.g., Ni, Co, Cu, Fe) have made significant headway partially due to their relatively large abundance, low cost, low toxicity as well as their occasionally occurred novel reactivity when compared to their noble cousins. This review will give a comprehensive summary on Ni‐catalyzed functionalization of inert C—H bonds assisted by chelation groups. For clarity, the content is classified by the newly formed chemical bonds, namely C—C, C—N, C—chalcogen and C—halogen bond formation.

Abstract:Copper-promoted inert C(sp(3))-H functionalization has gradually been developed as a nascent tool to establish categories of bonds, including C(sp(3))-C, C(sp(3))-N, C(sp(3))-O/S, and C(sp(3))-X bonds. However, there have been no reviews summarizing the latest advances in this domain. Herein, we review the main progress of copper-promoted inert C(sp(3))-H functionalization, covering the literature up to 2020 and classifying the works by the types of bonds formed. Reaction characteristics and proposed mechanisms of nearly all examples are presented and, in some cases, are comprehensively compared with those of literature precedents. In addition, an overview of the current development of this field is summarized and the future of this domain is discussed.

Abstract:Copper-catalyzed radical transformations establish a powerful toolkit to construct versatile complex organic compounds. The copper-mediated bond formation step of radicals plays a critical role in controlling chemo- and stereoselectivity of copper-catalyzed radical transformation reactions. This bond formation step involves three possible pathways: ion-type bond formation, radical substitution, and reductive elimination. This review highlights the recent advances in theoretical studies on mechanisms and controlling models on the selectivity of Cu-mediated radical-involved bond formation, providing a general mechanistic comprehension of this key elementary step in copper catalysis.

It also discusses the impact of these methodologies on the construction of complex molecular architectures, including pharmaceuticals and natural products. This review aims to provide valuable guidance for researchers seeking to leverage copper‐mediated strategies in their synthetic endeavors by creating current knowledge and identifying future directions. We have highlighted the new bonds formed through C‐H functionalizations for the convenience of readers.

Abstract:In the past decade, transition-metal-catalyzed C-H activations have been very popular in the research field of organometallic chemistry, and have been considered as efficient and convenient strategies to afford complex natural products, functional advanced materials, fluorescent compounds, and pharmaceutical compounds. Abstract:Transition-metal-catalyzed, coordination-assisted C(sp<sup>3</sup>)-H functionalization has revolutionized synthetic planning over the past few decades as the use of these directing groups has allowed for increased access to many strategic positions in organic molecules. Nonetheless, several challenges remain preeminent, such as the requirement for high temperatures, the difficulty in removing or converting directing groups, and, although many metals provide some reactivity, the difficulty in employing metals outside of palladium. This review aims to give a comprehensive overview of coordination-assisted, transition-metal-catalyzed, direct functionalization of nonactivated C(sp<sup>3</sup>)-H bonds by covering the literature since 2004 in order to demonstrate the current state-of-the-art methods as well as the current limitations. For clarity, this review has been divided into nine sections by the transition metal catalyst with subdivisions by the type of bond formation. Synthetic applications and reaction mechanism are discussed where appropriate.

Abstract:Copper serves as a highly adaptable catalyst for the activation of C−H bonds in aryls, heteroaryls, and alkenyl groups, facilitating the synthesis of intricate organic compounds. Its pivotal role in industrial processes has spurred innovation in design, contributing to enhanced methodologies and supporting the transition towards more environmentally friendly practices. This review provides a comprehensive overview and evaluation of the studies conducted over the past 15 years into copper catalyzed reactions for C(sp2)−C(sp2) bond formation via C(sp2)−H activation. The investigations encompass a wide array of starting materials and substrates. The range of substrates studied has been broadened to encompass C−H activation of aryls, heteroaryls, and alkenyl groups. Furthermore, in some cases only catalytic amounts of copper salts were required to drive the challenging C−H functionalization, indicating a promising avenue for future research.

Abstract:Metalloporphyrins are a class of versatile catalysts with the capability to functionalize saturated C–H bonds via several well-defined atom/group transfer processes, including oxene, nitrene, and carbene C–H insertions. The corresponding hydroxylation, amination, and alkylation reactions provide direct approaches for the catalytic conversion of abundant hydrocarbons into value-added functional molecules through C–O, C–N, and C–C bond formations, respectively. This tutorial review describes metalloporphyrin-based catalytic systems for the functionalization of different types of sp3 C–H bonds, both inter- and intramolecularly, including challenging primary C–H bonds. Additional features of metalloporphyrin-catalyzed C–H functionalization include unusual selectivities and high turnover numbers.

Abstract:Direct C–H functionalization has recently emerged as one of the most efficient strategies to access structurally complex molecules from readily accessible feedstocks in an atom- and step-economic manner. In particular, enantioselective C–H activation has garnered increasing attention by enabling chemists to efficiently assemble valuable chiral compounds by asymmetrically manipulating C–H bonds into useful functionalities. Apart from the extensively studied C–C bond formation, very few endeavors have been focused on the C–X formation analogs. Motivated by the utility of the latter approach in constructing academically and industrially important heteroatom-containing chiral compounds, we provide herein an overview on C–X forming asymmetric C–H activation reactions proceeding through C–H metalation. The advancements are organized according to the employed catalytic systems, which include Pd(II) catalysis, group-9 CpxM(III) catalysis, monovalent group-9 metal catalysis, and multi-boryl/silyl Ir(III) catalysis, with emphasis on the design philosophy, mechanism, and mode of enantiocontrol.
