Abstract:Well-crystallized BCN compounds have been prepared from melamine (C3H6N6) and boron oxidation (B2O3) at pressures above 25 GPa and temperatures higher than 2500 K. The morphology of synthetic BCN samples was characterized transmission electron microscope. The atomic B/C/N ratio was determined by Electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). Abstract:Single-phase BC4N can be formed at high pressure and temperature, starting with either a mixture of diamond and cubic boron nitride or graphite and hexagonal boron nitride. The samples exhibit extreme Vickers hardness (85 +/- 4 GPa), reaching the hardness of single crystal diamond. Within a random solid solution model, the X-ray diffraction patterns of cubic BCxN solid solutions were calculated. Abstract:Periodic mesoporous hexagonal boron nitride was investigated as a precursor for nanoscale forms of cubic boron nitride. Cubic boron nitride (c‐BN) nanocrystals were obtained at a pressure of 14 GPa and a temperature of 1300 °C. The synthesized nanocrystals have diameters of ∼ 50 nm and are solution‐processible. Mesoporous c‐BN formed at a pressure of 10 GPa and 1000 °C. The mesoporous c‐BN has a pore size distribution centered around 3 nm and a surface area of 122 m 2 /g as determined by electron tomography. At pressures of 8 and 6 GPa near monodisperse h‐BN nanodiscs with diameters of 0.5‐1 μm and 0.2‐0.5 μm were formed, respectively. The discs formed colloidal solutions in acetone. The hydrodynamic radius of the discs matched the radii determined by dynamic light scattering indicating absence of nanodisc aggregation in solution.

Abstract:Synthesis and research of the properties of boron nitride powders and BN powders with additives produced under effect of concentrated light in a flow of nitrogen in a xenon high-flux optical furnace are presented. A scanning and transmission electron microscopes demonstrated structures of new morphologies for the powders, which were formed. XRD, Raman scattering and electron diffraction study have confirmed a complicated structure and phase composition of the powders with a prevalence of the amorphous phases. It was demonstrated an effect of experimental conditions, surface modification and additives on phase composition, morphology and structure formation. The gaseous model based on an evolution of the bubble has been confirmed new nanostructure formation. Burst of these bubbles may result in graphene-like structures formation.

Abstract:The high-pressure behaviors of large-diameter single-walled boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) are studied by the first-principles method. One sp3-hybridized and three sp2/sp3-hybridized BN allotropes are obtained via compressing large diameter BNNTs. Due to the restricted movement of nonequivalent B and N atoms, the large BN nanotubes have a chance to form B-B and N-N bonds between intertubes under pressure, in addition to the common B-N bonds. The electron localization function and Mulliken's population analysis indicate the covalent nature of the B-B and N-N dimers. The electronic band structure and density of state calculations show a local conducting feature of tP24-BN and superhard semiconducting character of the other three allotropes with indirect band gaps of 1.28 – 3.13 eV.

Abstract:A moderate chemical method [i.e., the reaction of diborane (B 2 H 6 ) and a mixture gas of ammonia and nitrogen (NH 3 /N 2 ) over nanoscale iron boride at 1100 °C] was developed to explore the boron nitride (BN) nanostructures. The products were well characterized by high-resolution electron microscopy and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. Two types of novel core–shell nanocapsules of amorphous boron core encapsulated in crystalline boron nitride shell were obtained. The first one looked like a peanut with an amorphous B core containing a trace of BN crystallites, a transition layer of BN nanofibers and amorphous B, and a thornlike shell of BN nanofibers. The second one looked like a perfect sphere consisting of a pure amorphous B core and a rather smooth crystalline BN shell. These results not only provided us a new chemical method for preparing BN nanostructures but also enriched the important BN nanostructures family. A growth mechanism is also briefly discussed.

At high pressure and temperature, h-BN can directly transform to a hexagonal close-packed polymorph (w-BN)2 that can be partially quenched after releasing pressure. Previous theoretical calculations3,4,5 and experimental measurements (primarily on quenched samples)6,7,8,9 provided substantial information on the transition, but left unsettled questions due to the lack of in situ characterization at high pressures. Using inelastic X-ray scattering to probe the boron and nitrogen near K-edge spectroscopy, here we report the first observation of the conversion process of boron and nitrogen sp2- and p-bonding to sp3 and the directional nature of the sp3 bonding. In combination with in situ X-ray diffraction probe, we have further clarified the structure transformation mechanism. The present archetypal example opens two enormous, element-specific, research areas on high-pressure bonding evolutions of boron and nitrogen; each of the two elements and their respective compounds have displayed a wealth of intriguing pressure-induced phenomena10 that result from bonding changes, including metallization11,12, superconductivity13,14, semiconductivity15, polymerization16 and superhardness2,17,18.

Abstract:In this paper we have theoretically found the activation energy ($420.38kJ/mol$) for the transformation from hBN to cBN in the microscopic viewpoint. We have introduced an analytical formula representing the dependence of nucleus formation time on the activation energy, synthesis pressure and temperature. We have theoretically determined the boundary line of cBN nucleus formation region in the $P-T$ phase diagram on the basis of the diffusion mechanism of cBN nucleus formation. We have found that the cBN crystal nucleus formation time is less than $300ms$ by comparing of the theory and experiment.

Abstract:The pressure-induced transformation of diatomic nitrogen into non-molecular polymeric phases may produce potentially useful high-energy-density materials. We combine first-principles calculations with structure searching to predict a new class of nitrogen-rich boron nitrides with a stoichiometry of B3N5 that are stable or metastable relative to solid N2 and h-BN at ambient pressure. The most stable phase at ambient pressure has a layered structure (h-B3N5) containing hexagonal B3N3 layers sandwiched with intercalated freely rotating N2 molecules. At 15 GPa, a three-dimensional C2221 structure with single N-N bonds becomes the most stable. This pressure is much lower than that required for triple-to-single bond transformation in pure solid nitrogen (110 GPa). More importantly, C2221-B3N5 is metastable, and can be recovered under ambient conditions. Its energy density of 3.44 kJ/g makes it a potential high-energy-density material. In addition, stress-strain calculations estimate a Vickers hardness of 44 GPa. Structure searching reveals a new clathrate sodalite-like BN structure that is metastable under ambient conditions.

Abstract:Theoretical predictions of pressure-induced phase transformations often become long-standing enigmas because of limitations of contemporary available experimental possibilities. Hitherto the existence of a non-icosahedral boron allotrope has been one of them. Here we report on the first non-icosahedral boron allotrope, which we denoted as {\zeta}-B, with the orthorhombic {\alpha}-Ga-type structure (space group Cmce) synthesized in a diamond anvil cell at extreme high-pressure high-temperature conditions (115 GPa and 2100 K). The structure of {\zeta}-B was solved using single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction and its compressional behavior was studied in the range of very high pressures (115 GPa to 135 GPa). Experimental validation of theoretical predictions reveals the degree of our up-to-date comprehension of condensed matter and promotes further development of the solid state physics and chemistry.

The Electronic Structure and Physicochemical Property of Boron Nitridene.

Abstract:Inspired by searching new forms of Boron Nitride (BN) compounds, the electronic structure and physicochemical property of a graphyne-like BN compound was explored by density functional theory with cluster models as well as periodic models. This graphyne-like BN compound is named Boron Nitridene in this work, based on geometry and bond order analysis as its B-N linking units take on double bond characteristics. Different cluster models of Boron Nitridene-x (x= 1-5) were constructed. Results show that the geometric parameters and molecular orbitals are similar for these models. The chemical stability of Boron Nitridene was estimated by the concept of heats of formation, vibrational frequency, and ab initio molecular dynamics. In addition, the IR and Raman spectra were predicted and the unique stretching modes were assigned to give a reference with experimental synthesis. Last, the adsorption strength of small molecules was calculated, and the results show the boron nitridene interacts stronger than hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). (C) 2019 Elsevier Inc. Synthesis and Thermal Oxidation Resistance of Boron-Rich Boron-Carbide Material

Abstract:A boron-rich boron-carbide material (B4+δC) was synthesized by spark plasma sintering of a ball-milled mixture of high-purity boron powder and graphitic carbon at a pressure of 7 MPa and a temperature of 1930 °C. This high-pressure, high-temperature synthesized material was recovered and characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Vickers hardness measurements, and thermal oxidation studies. The X-ray diffraction studies revealed a single-phase rhombohedral structure (space group R-3m) with lattice parameters in hexagonal representation as a = 5.609 ± 0.007 Å and c = 12.082 ± 0.02 Å. The experimental lattice parameters result in a value of δ = 0.55, or the composition of the synthesized compound as B4.55C. The high-resolution scans of boron binding energy reveal the existence of a B-C bond at 188.5 eV. Raman spectroscopy reveals the existence of a 386 cm-1 vibrational mode representative of C-B-B linear chain formation due to excess boron in the lattice. The measured Vickers microhardness at a load of 200 gf shows a high hardness value of 33.8 ± 2.3 GPa. Thermal gravimetric studies on B4.55C were conducted at a temperature of 1300 °C in a compressed dry air environment, and its behavior is compared to other high-temperature ceramic materials such as high-entropy transition metal boride. The high neutron absorption cross section, high melting point, high mechanical strength, and thermal oxidation resistance make this material ideal for applications in extreme environments.

Abstract:Pressure-induced phase transition of boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) provides an effective approach to develop new boron nitride nanostructures with more desirable functions than those of carbon nanotubes, owing to the unique polar B–N bonds. However, the synthetic BNNTs usually comprise double- or multi-walls, whose structural evolution under pressure is complicated and remains largely elusive. Here, we unveil the complete phase transition behavior of hexagonal bundles of double-walled (DW) BNNTs of different chirality and diameters under hydrostatic pressures of up to 60 GPa. A series of new monolith phases are obtained from the compressed DW-BNNT bundles, whose structures can be well retained even after releasing the pressure. The bonding characters; electronic, optical, and mechanical properties; and Raman signature of these monolith phases are elucidated, which provide essential guidance for synthesis of new boron nitride materials with unprecedented properties for technological applications.

Boron nitride nanotube precursor formation during high-temperature synthesis: kinetic and thermodynamic modelling

Abstract:We performed integrated modelling of the chemical pathways of formation for boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) precursors during high-temperature synthesis in a B/N2 mixture. Modelling includes quantum chemistry, quantum-classical molecular dynamics, thermodynamic, and kinetic approaches. It is shown that BN compounds are formed in the interaction of N2 molecules with small boron clusters (N2 molecule fixation) rather than with less reactive liquid boron. We demonstrate that the transformation and consumption of liquid boron proceeds through the evaporation of clusters, Bm with m less than or equal to 5 and their subsequent conversion into BmNn chains. The production of such chains is crucial to the growth of BNNTs because these chains form the building blocks of bigger and longer BN chains and rings, which are themselves the building blocks of fullborenes and BNNTs. Moreover, kinetic modelling revealed that B4N4 and B5N4 species play a major role in the N2 molecule fixation process. The formation of these species via reactions with B4 and B5 clusters is not adequately described under the assumption of thermodynamic equilibrium because the accumulation of both B4N4 and B5N4 depends on the background gas pressure and the gas cooling rate. Long BN chains and rings, which are precursors of the fullborene and BNNT growth, form via self-assembly of component B4N4 and B5N4. Our modelling results (particularly the increased densities of B4N4 and B5N4 species at higher gas pressures) explain the experimentally observed effect of gas pressure on the yield of high-quality BNNTs. The catalytic role of hydrogen was also studied; it is shown that HBNH molecules can be the main precursor of BNNT synthesis in the presence of hydrogen.

Abstract:The phase diagram of boron carbide is calculated within the density functional theory as a function of temperature and pressure up to 80 GPa, accounting for icosahedral, graphitelike, and diamondlike atomic structures. Only some icosahedral phases turn out to be thermodynamically stable with atomic carbon concentrations (c) of 8.7% (B10.5C), 13.0% (B6.7C), 20% (B4C), and 28.6% (B2.5C), respectively. Their respective ranges of stability under pressure and temperature are calculated, and the theoretical T-P-c phase diagram boundaries are discussed. At ambient conditions, the introduction in the phase diagram of the new phase B10.5C with an ordered crystalline motif of 414 atoms is shown to bring the theoretical solubility range of carbon in boron close to the experimental one. The link with the experimental phase diagram consisting of one single phase having the <math> R 3 ¯ m</math> space group is discussed, and the concept of partial occupation of Wyckoff's site is introduced. At high pressure, the phase diagram is defined by a new carbon-rich phase B2.5C, which is stabilized by both pressure and temperature in our calculations. All of the other diamond and graphite phases reported previously turn out to be thermodynamically unstable in our calculations, although some of them are observed in high pressure experiments.

Abstract:Boron is an element of fascinating chemical complexity. Controversies have shrouded this element since its discovery was announced in 1808: the new 'element' turned out to be a compound containing less than 60-70 percent of boron, and it was not until 1909 that 99-percent pure boron was obtained. And although we now know of at least 16 polymorphs, the stable phase of boron is not yet experimentally established even at ambient conditions. Boron's complexities arise from frustration: situated between metals and insulators in the periodic table, boron has only three valence electrons, which would favour metallicity, but they are sufficiently localized that insulating states emerge. However, this subtle balance between metallic and insulating states is easily shifted by pressure, temperature and impurities. Here we report the results of high-pressure experiments and ab initio evolutionary crystal structure predictions that explore the structural stability of boron under pressure and, strikingly, reveal a partially ionic high-pressure boron phase. This new phase is stable between 19 and 89 GPa, can be quenched to ambient conditions, and has a hitherto unknown structure (space group Pnnm, 28 atoms in the unit cell) consisting of icosahedral B12 clusters and B2 pairs in a NaCl-type arrangement. We find that the ionicity of the phase affects its electronic bandgap, infrared adsorption and dielectric constants, and that it arises from the different electronic properties of the B2 pairs and B12 clusters and the resultant charge transfer between them.
Polymer-Derived Boron Nitride: A Review on the Chemistry, Shaping and Ceramic Conversion of Borazine Derivatives

Abstract:Boron nitride (BN) is a III-V compound which is the focus of important research since its discovery in the early 19th century. BN is electronic to carbon and thus, in the same way that carbon exists as graphite, BN exists in the hexagonal phase. The latter offers an unusual combination of properties that cannot be found in any other ceramics. However, these properties closely depend on the synthesis processes. This review states the recent developments in the preparation of BN through the chemistry, shaping and ceramic conversion of borazine derivatives. This concept denoted as Polymer-Derived Ceramics (PDCs) route allows tailoring the chemistry of precursors to elaborate complex BN shapes which cannot be obtained by conventional process. The effect of the chemistry of the molecular precursors, i.e., borazine and trichloroborazine, and their polymeric derivatives i.e., polyborazylene and poly[tri(methylamino)borazine], in which the specific functional groups and structural motifs determine the shaping potential by conventional liquid-phase process and plastic-forming techniques is discussed. Nanotubes, nano-fibers, coatings, monoliths and fiber-reinforced matrix composites are especially described. This leads to materials which are of significant engineering interest.

Abstract:A chemical method has been developed for synthesizing boron nitride nanowires through the reaction of a mixture gas of nitrogen (N-2) and ammonia (NH3) over nanoscale alpha-FeB particles at 1100 degreesC. Boron content in the product comes from the alpha-FeB catalyst itself. Transmission electron microscopic image indicates an abundant quantity of BN nanowires with diameter about 20 nm and length up to several tens of microns. The product has also been characterized by high-resolution electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectrometer. The perfectly straight lattice fringes with an interlayer spacing of about 0.333 nm corresponding to d(0002) spacing of h-BN indicate that the BN nanowires are well crystallized. Also, a growth mechanism has been speculated. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.
