Abstract:Here, we reported for the first time an iron-catalyzed highly enantioselective hydrogenation of minimally functionalized 1,1-disubstituted alkenes to access chiral alkanes with full conversion and excellent ee. A novel chiral 8-oxazoline iminoquinoline ligand and its iron complex have been designed and synthesized. This protocol is operationally simple by using 1 atm of hydrogen gas and shows good functional group tolerance. A primary mechanism has been proposed by the deuterium-labeling experiments.

Abstract:Cross-dehydrogenative couplings of two different C-H bonds have emerged as an attractive goal in organic synthesis. However, achieving regioselective C-H activation is a great challenge because C-H bonds are ubiquitous in organic compounds. Actually, the regioselective couplings promoted by enzymes are a common occurrence in nature. Herein, we have developed simple, efficient and general transition metal-free intramolecular couplings of alphatic and aromatic C-H bonds. The protocol uses readily available aryl triazene as the radical initiator, cheap K2S2O8 as the oxidant, and the couplings were performed well with excellent tolerance of functional groups. Interestingly, α-carbon configuration of some amino acid residues in the substrates was kept after the reactions, and the couplings for substrates with substituted phenylalanine residues exhibited complete β-carbon diastereoselectivity for induction of the chiral α-carbon. Therefore, the present study should provide a novel strategy for regioselective cross-dehydrogenative couplings of two different C-H bonds.

Abstract:The discovery of catalytic systems based on earth-abundant transition metals for the functionalization of C-H bonds enables streamlined and sustainable solutions to problems in synthetic organic chemistry. In this Communication, we disclose an iron-based catalytic system for the functionalization of propargylic and allylic C-H bonds. Inexpensive and readily available cyclopentadienyliron(II) dicarbonyl complexes were employed as catalysts for a novel deprotonative activation mode for C-H functionalization, an approach that allows for the direct union of unsaturated building blocks with aryl aldehydes and other carbonyl electrophiles to deliver a range of unsaturated alcohol coupling products under operationally simple and functional group tolerant reaction conditions.

Abstract:C-H functionalisation reactions offer a sustainable method for molecular construction and diversification. These reactions however remain dominated by precious metal catalysis. While significant interest in iron-catalysed C-H activation reactions has emerged, the isolation, characterisation and mechanistic understanding of these processes remain lacking. Herein the iron-catalysed C(sp 2 )-H bond hydrogen/deuterium exchange reaction using CD 3 OD is reported for both heterocycles and, for the first time, alkenes (38 examples). Isolation and characterisation, including by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, of the key iron-aryl and iron-alkenyl C-H metallation intermediates provided evidence for a reversible protonation of the active iron hydride catalyst. Good chemoselectivity was observed for both substrate classes. The developed procedure is orthogonal to previous iron-catalysed H/D exchange methods which used C 6 D 6 , D 2 , or D 2 O as the deuterium source, and uses only bench-stable reagents, including the iron(II) pre-catalyst. Further, a new mechanism of iron-hydride formation is reported in which β–hydride elimination from an alcohol generates the iron hydride.The ability to produce, isolate and characterise the organometallic products arising from C-H activation presents a basis for future discovery and development.

Abstract:Two hydrogenation mechanisms, transfer and catalytic hydrogenation, were combined to achieve higher regulation of hydrogenation chemoselectivity of cinnamyl aldehydes. Transfer hydrogenation with ammonia borane exclusively reduced C=O bonds to get cinnamyl alcohol, and Pt‐loaded metal–organic layers efficiently hydrogenated C=C bonds to synthesize phenyl propanol with almost 100 % conversion rate. The hydrogenation could be performed under mild conditions without external high‐pressure hydrogen and was applicable to various α,β‐unsaturated aldehydes.

Abstract:Catalytic methods allowing for the reliable prediction and control of diverse regioselectivity along with the control of enantioselectivity to access different regio- and enantiomers by switching the least reaction parameters are one of the most attractive ways in organic synthesis, which provide access to diverse enantioenriched architectures from identical starting materials. Herein, a Co-catalyzed regiodivergent and enantioselective reductive hydroalkylation of 1,3-dienes with aldehydes have been achieved, furnishing different enantioenriched homoallylic alcohol architectures in good levels of enantioselectivity. The reaction features the switch of regioselectivity tuned by the selection of proton source. The use of an acid as proton source provided asymmetric 1,2-hydroalkylation products under reductive conditions, yet asymmetric 4,3-hydroalkylation products were obtained with silane as hydride source. This catalytic protocol allows for the access of homoallylic alcohols with two continuous saturated carbon centers in good levels of regio-, diastereo-, and enantioselectivity.
