Abstract:The mechanisms and chemo- and regioselectivities of Ru(II)-catalyzed decarboxylative C-H alkenylation of aryl carboxylic acids with alkynes were investigated with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The catalytic cycle involves sequential carboxylate-directed C-H activation, alkyne insertion, decarboxylation and protonation. The facile tether-assisted decarboxylation step directs the intermediate toward the desired decarboxylative alkenylation, instead of typical annulation and double alkenylation pathways. The decarboxylation barrier is very sensitive to the tether length, and only the seven-membered ring intermediate can selectively undergo the designed decarboxylation, suggesting a tether-dependent chemoselectivity. This tether-dependent chemoselectivity also applies to the alkyl tethers. In addition, the polarity of solvent is found to control the chemoselectivity between the decarboxylative alkenylation and [4 + 2] annulation. Solvent with low polarity (toluene) favors the decarboxylation pathway, leading to the decarboxylative alkenylation. Solvent with high polarity (methanol) favors the ionic stepwise C-O reductive elimination pathway, leading to the [4 + 2] annulation. To understand the origins of regioselectivity with asymmetric alkynes, the distortion/interaction analysis was applied to the alkyne insertion transition states, and led to a predictive frontier molecular orbital model. The asymmetric alkynes selectively use the terminal with the larger HOMO orbital coefficient to form the C-C bond in the insertion step.

Abstract:A highly chemo-, regio- and stereoselective cobalt-catalyzed Markovnikov hydrosilylation of alkynes was developed. Various functionalized groups, such as halides, free alcohols, free aniline, ketones, esters, amides, and nitriles are tolerated, which may lead to further applications and late-stage derivatizations. To date, this is the most efficient cobalt catalytic system (TOF=65520h(-1); TOF=turnover frequency) for hydrosilylation of alkynes. The Hiyama-Denmark cross-coupling reactions of vinylsilanes with aryl iodides underwent smoothly to afford 1,1-diarylethenes. A unique regioselectivity-controllable hydrosilylation/hydroboration reaction of alkynes was also described.

Abstract:Here, we reported for the first time a mechanistically distinctive cobalt-catalyzed Markovnikov-type sequential semihydrogenation/hydrohydrazidation of aliphatic terminal alkynes in one pot. A cobalt hydride species was employed as two roles for both a unique metal-catalyzed Markovnikov-type insertion of the aliphatic terminal alkynes and then metal-catalyzed hydrogen atom transfer of alkenes. This operationally simple protocol exhibits excellent functional group tolerance and step economy. The hydrazone products could be easily transferred to various valuable amine derivatives.

Abstract:Here, we reported a cobalt-hydride-catalyzed Markovnikov-type hydroallylation of terminal alkynes with allylic electrophile to access valuable and branched skipped dienes (1,4-dienes) with good regioselectivity. This operationally simple protocol exhibits excellent functional group tolerance and exceptional substrate scope. The reactions could be carried out in gram-scale with TON (turn over number) up to 1160, and the products could be easily derivatized. The preliminary mechanism of electrophilic allylation of α-selective cobalt alkenyl intermediate was proposed based on deuterium labeling experiment and kinetic studies.

Abstract:A general strategy for cobalt‐catalyzed methylative coupling of aldehydes/aldimines with reversal of the inherent regioselectivity to afford a broad scope of allylic alcohols and allylic amines is presented. Comprehensive Summary Catalytic methylative coupling of internal alkynes and aldehydes/aldimines through regioselective oxidative cyclization promoted by a phosphine–Co complex is presented. Such process constitutes an unprecedented and unique approach for Co‐catalyzed generation of metallacycles that reversed inherent regiochemical biases to furnish a wide range of allylic alcohols and allylic amides bearing a tetrasubstituted alkene in up to 98% yield with high regioselectivity, representing a novel and general strategy for reversal of substrate‐controlled regioselectivity in metal‐catalyzed oxidative cyclization.

Abstract:A Co-catalyzed highly regio- and enantioselective reductive coupling of alkynes and aldehydes has been developed under visible light photoredox dual catalysis. A variety of enantioenriched allylic alcohols have been obtained by using unsymmetrical internal alkynes and commercially available catalyst, chiral ligand, and reagents. Abstract:Cyclopentadienyliron dicarbonyl based allenyliron complexes were prepared, and their formal [3 + 2] cycloaddition with a number of dipolar reagents was investigated as a means of preparing heterocyclic compounds in a regiocontrolled manner. In addition, the mechanism of the isomerization of an allenyliron complex to its propargyliron tautomer was investigated. Abstract:Rh(acac)(CO)(2) catalyzes addition of (N,N-diisopropylcarbamoyl)trimethylstannane to terminal alkynes to give (Z)-beta-stannyl-alpha,beta-unsaturated amides with terminal attachment of the amide group, while the use of Ni(COd)(2) results in the reversal of the regioselectivity.
