Abstract:Cp2TiCl2-catalyzed regioselective hydrocarboxylation of alkenes with CO2 to give carboxylic acids in high yields has been developed in the presence of iPrMgCl. The reaction proceeds with a wide range of alkenes under mild conditions. Styrene and its derivatives can transform to α-aryl carboxylic acids, and aliphatic alkenes can transform to form alkanoic acids.

Abstract:Here, we reported a cobalt-hydride-catalyzed Markovnikov-type hydroallylation of terminal alkynes with allylic electrophile to access valuable and branched skipped dienes (1,4-dienes) with good regioselectivity. This operationally simple protocol exhibits excellent functional group tolerance and exceptional substrate scope. The reactions could be carried out in gram-scale with TON (turn over number) up to 1160, and the products could be easily derivatized. The preliminary mechanism of electrophilic allylation of α-selective cobalt alkenyl intermediate was proposed based on deuterium labeling experiment and kinetic studies.

Abstract:The role of carbodiimide as dehydrant in the chemo-, regio- and stereoselective Pd (II/0)-catalyzed hydrocarboxylation of various alkynes with HCOOH releasing CO in situ is reported for the first time to obtain α , β -unsaturated carboxylic acids. Both symmetrical and unsymmetrical monoalkynes show good reactivity. Importantly, 2,2'-(1,4-phenylene)diacrylic acid can also be synthesized in high yield through the dihydrocarboxylation of 1,4-diethynylbenzene. Besides, an excellent result in gram scale experiment and TON up to 900 can be obtained, displaying the efficiency of this protocol. Notably, regulating the types and concentrations of dehydrant can control the CO generation, avoiding directly operating toxic CO and circumventing sensitivity issue to the CO amount. On the basis of the attractive features of formic acid including easy preparation through CO 2 hydrogenation and efficient liberation of CO, this protocol using formic acid as bridging reagent between CO 2 and CO can be perceived as an indirect utilization of CO 2 , offering an alternative method for preparing acrylic acid analogues. Graphical We provide a new strategy for using carbodiimide as dehydrant to realize highly chem-, regio- and stereoselective Pd-catalyzed hydrocarboxylation of alkynes with HCOOH as both CO source and hydrogen donor, as a protocal for indirect utilization of CO 2 . Abstract:Here we present an example of utilizing hydroxy groups for regioselectivity control in the addition reaction of alkynes-a highly efficient Pd-catalyzed syn-hydrocarboxylation of readily available 2-alkynylic alcohols with CO in the presence of alcohols with an unprecedented regioselectivity affording 3-hydroxy-2(E)-alkenoates. The role of the hydroxy group has been carefully studied. The synthetic potential of the products has also been demonstrated.

Abstract:The metal hydride catalyzed alkene hydroalkylation enables efficient alkyl–alkyl coupling, yielding structurally diverse chiral organic compounds. However, the control of stereochemical selectivity in alkene hydroalkylation still heavily relies on the assistance of substrate Lewis basic functional groups or polar heteroatom functional groups. We have recently developed a cobalt hydride catalytic system and established a paradigm of enantioselective control assisted by C–H···π noncovalent interactions. Insights into the Regioselective Hydrocarboxylation of Styrenes with CO 2 Controlled by the Ligand of Nickel Catalysts

Abstract:The carboxylation of unsaturated hydrocarbons using CO2 offers a highly appealing access to valuable carboxylic acids, while selectively obtaining the anti-Markovnikov product still remains a challenge. In this work, a density functional theory (DFT) study on the ligand-controlled regioselective hydrocarboxylation of styrenes with CO2 mediated by Ni(II) catalysts is presented. Our calculations support that the regioselectivity origins from the difference in reaction mechanisms and the Ni center of active catalytic species has different valence states when Ni(II) catalysts with the ligand of different properties are used. For the neocuproine ligand, styrene ligating to the NiI species initiates its hydrocarboxylation, and subsequent protonation preferentially occurs at the Cβ atom, which promotes the following CO2 insertion at the Cα-position and leads to a unique α-selective product. However, a key Ni-hydride intermediate is first formed by the protonation of Ni0 species in the presence of 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)butane (dppb) as the ligand. Abstract:Starting from diverse alkene-tethered aryl halides and silyl formate formed in situ from CO2 and PMHS (polymethylhydrosiloxane), the carbo-carboxylation of alkenes has been achieved using an easily accessible Pd/monophosphine ligand combination as the catalyst. This protocol provides competent access to construct a series of 2,3-dihydrobenzofurans, chromans, isochroman, indanes and tetralins bearing a β-acid moiety in moderate to excellent yield. Additionally, the example of domino carbo-carbonylation reactions has been demonstrated using diene-tethered aryl iodide as a starting material, forming an oxygen-containing bicyclic product in good yield. It is speculated that the carbo-carboxylation reaction of alkenes proceeds via a carbo-silyloxycarbonylation pathway.

Abstract:Novel strategy for acid chlorides formation that do not use carboxylic acids is particularly attractive in chemical synthesis but remains challenging. Herein, we reported the development of a highly effective Pd-catalyzed hydrochlorocarbonylation of alkenes with CO for the formation of alkyl acid chlorides. Chlorosilane and AcOH were found as a mild HCl source for the reaction. The reaction shows broad substrate scope and produces both branched and linear alkyl acid chlorides in good to high yields upon different ligands and solvents. Cooperating with follow-up acylation reactions, the Pd-catalyzed hydrochlorocarbonylation offers a complementary platform for the synthesis of diverse carbonyl compounds from alkenes. Mechanistic investigations suggested that the reaction proceeded though a palladium hydride pathway, and CO prompted reductive elimination of the acyl-Pd-Cl intermediate.

Abstract:Several examples on Pd-catalysed carbonylation of methyl C(sp3)-H bonds with gaseous CO via Pd(II)/Pd(0) catalysis have been reported. However, methylene C(sp3)-H carbonylation remains a great challenge, largely due to the lack of reactivity of C-H bonds and the difficulty in CO migratory insertion. Herein, we report the stereoselective alkoxycarbonylation of both methyl and methylene C(sp3)-H bonds with alkyl chloroformates through a Pd(II)/Pd(IV) catalytic cycle. A broad range of aliphatic carboxamides and alkyl chloroformates are compatible with this protocol. In addition, this process is scalable and the directing group could be easily removed under mild conditions with complete retention of configuration.

Abstract:A visible-light-induced carboxylation of styrenes with CO2 has been developed by a halogen-atom-transfer pathway using alkyl iodides as promoters. Challenging alkyl iodides and CO2 could be assembled into electron-deficient styrenes for the synthesis of aryl acetic acids. Late-stage functionalization of bioactive molecules showed the synthetic utility of the halogen atom transfer system.

Abstract:a,b-Unsaturated carboxylic acids are important chemicals, and can be used as basic materials in the production of plastics, superabsorbent, polymers, and rubbers. Various synthetic methodologies for their synthesis have been developed, for example, oxidation of propene over heterogeneous catalysts at high temperature yielded the a,b-unsaturated carboxylic acids and hydrocarboxylation of alkynes utilization of metal carbonyls complexes also formed the a,b-unsaturated carboxylic acids. From the viewpoint of sustainable chemistry, the development of efficient routes with high atom and stepeconomy under mild conditions could be highly desirable. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is an environmental friendly, low-toxic and abundant carbon source. Many reaction have been developed utilization of CO2 as a C1 feedstock in organic synthesis. The addition of CO2 to alkynes could serve as a most powerful synthetic route for construction of the a,b-unsaturated carboxylic acids. Recently, Ma and co-workers reported a nickelcatalyzed hydrocarboxylation of alkynes with diethyl zinc and CO2 to form the a,b-unsaturated carboxylic acids. In the meantime, Tsuji and co-workers developed a copper-catalyzed hydrocarboxylation of alkynes with CO2 by using hydrosilane as hydrogen source to afford the a,b-unsaturated carboxylic acids. On the other hand, direct reaction of vinylmagnesium halides with CO2 could also afford the a,b-unsaturated carboxylic acids, however, the vinylmagnesium reagents are required preparation in advanced and thus limitation their use. Abstract:An effective Pd-catalyzed regioselective hydroformylation process with N-formylsaccharin or 2,4,6-trichlorophenyl formate along with formic acid is described.
