Abstract:The geometric and electronic structures of a series of conjugated macrocycles (phenylene-acetylene macrocycles, PAMs) have been studied theoretically with ab initio and semiempirical molecular orbital methods. The ob initio calculations at the HF/6-31G* level demonstrate that the model molecules may have a planar conformation. Bigger macrocycles, for example, 7PAM, 8PAM, and 9PAM, result in several energy minima. The boatlike conformation is the most energetically favored form. Based on the conformational analysis, a novel method for analyzing the ring-strain energy was proposed and used. In view of their potential applications as electronic materials, the electronic structures of a series of PAMs are also investigated. The LUMO-HOMO gaps of the planar PAMs show an odd-even difference behavior. In addition, the HOMOs of the planar species 3PAM, 5PAM, 7PAM, and 9PAM are doubly degenerated.

Abstract:Macrocyclic compounds play an important role in supramolecular chemistry accounting for their unique recognition and self-assembly properties and potential applications in biomedicine and material science. Azo compounds display promising capability in fields of molecular switches, polymers, smart materials and molecular machines because of their photoactive and electroactive properties. Introducing azo groups into macrocycles gives them signal moieties, additional recognition sites, photo-responsive properties, and so on. Herein, we comprehensively review the structures of azo-containing macrocyclic compounds reported up to now. Then we describe representative works on azo macrocycles with their molecular recognition, self-assembly and application emphasized.

Abstract:Dual-cavity macrocycles with extended π-conjugation are synthetically challenging yet attractive targets, exhibiting intriguing topologies and functional properties. In this work, a series of conjugated figure-of-eight macrocycles consisting of fused aromatic subunits are facilely prepared employing intramolecular cyclizations from precursors containing an anthracene photodimer core and phenanthrene-derived side arms. In addition to function as an X-shaped template for cyclizations, the anthracene photodimer core also enables late-stage topological manipulations by cycloreversion, affording conjugated lemniscular macrocycles with D2 symmetry.

Abstract:In this work, tetraphenylethene macrocycles are selectively synthesized in one step from McMurry coupling reaction of 1,1-bis(4-phenylcarbonyl)-2,2-diphenylethene in 45% overall yield. A more planar cyclized compound can be obtained by oxidization of tetraphenylethene macrocycles with iron (III) chloride in nitromethane. Their unusual optical properties and electrical properties are explored. The measured mobilities are 0.7022 and 0.0055 cm(2) V-1 s(-1), respectively. The decomposition temperatures are also measured by thermal gravimetric analysis as, respectively 342 degrees C and 455 degrees C, indicating good thermal stabilities. The understanding of the structure and properties will benefit to the chemical synthesis of graphene. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Macrocycles composed of arylene and ethynylene units (AEMs) have attracted great interest in recent years, due to their novel properties and potential applications. The advances in syntheses of AEMs, including different cyclization methods, solid-phase synthesis, template synthesis and aggregation driven cyclization are summarized. The progress that has been achieved for self-assembly of AEMs and its applications in supramolecule chemistry, including three-dimensional nano-structures, discotic liquid crystals, extended tubular channels, guest-host complexes and porous organic solids, is also reviewed.

Abstract:Bimolecular coupling/unimolecular cyclization strategies, including McMurry- and Glaser-type homocoupling reactions, were utilized to synthesize two shape-persistent elliptic macrocycles, which consist of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon units. The identity and purity of both macrocycles MC1 and MC2 were verified by H-1 and C-13 NMR, elemental analysis, as well as MALDI-TOF MS. The photophysical properties of MC1 and MC2 in dilute solution were also investigated.

Abstract:Several fluorescent macrocycles based on 1,3-butadiyne-bridged dibenz[a,j]anthracene subunits have been synthesized via a multistep route. The synthetic strategy involved the initial construction of a functionalized dibenz[a,j]anthracene building block, subsequent installation of free alkyne groups on one side of the polycyclic aromatic framework, and a final cyclization based on a modified Glaser coupling under high-dilution conditions. Photophysical studies on three conjugated macrocycles revealed the formation of J-aggregates in thin films, as well as in concentrated solid solutions (polyisobutylene matrix), with peak absorption and emission wavelength in the range of lambda = 460-480 nm. The characteristic red-shifting of the J-aggregate features as compared to the monomer spectra, enhancement in absorption intensities, narrowed linewidths, and minimal Stokes shift values, were all observed. We demonstrate that improvements in spectral features can be brought about by annealing the films under a solvent-saturated atmosphere, where for the best films the luminescence quantum efficiency as high as 92% was measured. This class of macrocycles represents a new category of J-aggregates that due to their high peak oscillator strength and high luminescence efficiency have the potential to be utilized in a variety of optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Creating conjugated macrocycles has attracted extensive research interest because their unique chemical and physical properties, such as conformational flexibility, intrinsic inner cavities and aromaticity/antiaromaticity, make these systems appealing building blocks for functional supramolecular materials. Here, we report the synthesis of four-, six- and eight-membered tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-based macrocycles on Ag(111) via on-surface Ullmann coupling reactions. The as-synthesized macrocycles are spontaneously segregated on the surface and self-assemble as large-area two-dimensional mono-component supramolecular crystals, as characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). We propose that the synthesis benefits from the conformational flexibility of the TPE backbone in distinctive multi-step reaction pathways. This study opens up opportunities for exploring the photophysical properties of TPE-based macrocycles.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive investigation into the molecular structures in the ground state and the first singlet excited state, intramolecular and intermolecular interactions, as well as the emission properties of monomers, dimers and macrocycles using density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory. Our study aims to unveil the macrocyclization-induce emission enhancement principle for benzothiadiazole-based macrocycles. Compared with the typical π - π stacking of monomers, macrocycles exhibit the tighter stacking arrangement due to the presence of strong intramolecular and intermolecular hydrogen bond interactions and the rigid triangular geometry of macrocycle, which is conducive to the enhancement of emissions efficiency. The calculated oscillator strength of macrocycles in the first excited state is much higher than that of dimers composed of two monomers. Meanwhile, the large transition electric dipole moment is beneficial for enhancing the emission efficiency. Additionally, our study reveals an emission wavelength red-shift for macrocycles after "CH"/N substitution in the acceptor moiety, and the transition mode from LUMO to HOMO can be mainly attributed to intramolecular charge transition characters from acceptor to donor fragments. Our theoretical study might provide valuable insights for the design of innovative luminescent macrocycles with high emission efficiency.

Abstract:Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of a [2.2]paracyclophane-containing macrocycle (PCMC) as a new through-space conjugated macrocycle using only benzene groups as the skeleton. For comparison, a diphenylmethane-containing nanohoop macrocycle (DCMC) with a non-conjugated linker was also synthesized. Their structures were confirmed by NMR and HR-MS, and their photophysical properties were studied by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopies combined with theoretical calculations. The strain energy of PCMC was estimated to be as high as 72.58 kcal mol(-1).

Abstract:A kind of o-carborane-based macrocycles were synthesized via oxidative coupling of acetyleneterminated o-carborane precursors. The single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis unambiguously revealed their unique porous supramolecular structures, which displayed micropore characteristics. Interestingly, the crystalline phase of macrocyclic CBMC-2 meets special structure parameters through non-covalent interaction. UV–vis, DSC and X-ray analysis indicated that the crystals of macrocycle CBMC-2 could undergo diacetylene topochemical polymerization inside solid by heating. It was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy and solid-state 13C NMR spectroscopy. This work provides a method for synthesizing carborane supramolecular polymers.

Abstract:Hydrogen bonding-induced aromatic amide oligomers may adopt folded, helical, extended or zigzag conformations. This feature of structural preorganization can be utilized to promote the formation of macrocycles. When reactive groups are introduced at the ends of the aromatic amide backbones, the preorganization of the backbones may induce them to adopt discrete required spatial orientations. When macrocyclization concerns the formation of irreversible covalent, carbon-metal and coordination bonds, preorganization may facilitate the formation of specifically designed macrocycles. When macrocyclization involves the formation of reversible covalent bonds such as imine and hydrazone, rationally designed macrocycles may be produced in high or even quantitative yields after the reactions achieve equilibrium and are controlled thermodynamically.

Abstract:The study of through‐space electronic coupling in π‐conjugated systems remains an underexplored area. In this work, we present the facile synthesis of two isomeric macrocycles (1 and 2) bridged by [2,2]paracyclophane (pCp) and based on thiophene. The structures of these macrocycles have been confirmed through X‐ray crystallographic analysis. Our investigation centers on their electronic properties across various redox states, with a specific focus on potential through‐space electronic coupling and global aromaticity. Experimental measurements, including UV‐vis‐NIR electronic absorption, NMR, ESR spectra, and X‐ray diffraction, combined with theoretical calculations, reveal that both the neutral compounds and their tetracations exhibit a closed‐shell ground state. However, their dications manifest as diradical dications with a subtle magnetic exchange interaction. Consequently, the through‐space electronic coupling facilitated by the pCp unit in their respective ground states appears to be weak.

Abstract:This paper describes the synthesis of three monornacrocycles and one bimacrocycle from two p-phenylene ethynylene frameworks. For two of the monomacrocycles, the two frameworks were linked by an amide unit and the macrocyclization involved the intramolecular formation of one imine bond. For another monomacrocycle and the bimacrocycle, the frameworks contained two and three amino or aldehyde units, respectively, and the macrocyclization involved the intermolecular formation of two and three imine bonds.

Abstract:Biological cyclization is highly efficient, and this can be attributed to the conformation of the backbone of the biopolymer. Taking advantage of metal-coordination geometry, we developed a method for conformation-directed polymerization cyclization through rational design of metal carbonyl monomers that could be used to produce cyclic macromolecules, even in bulk. P FpR [P Fp=(PPh2 (CH2 )3 Cp)Fe(CO)2 with the phosphine group tethered on the cyclopentadiene (Cp) ring; R=CH3 or (CH2 )5 CH3 ] was designed and synthesized for migration insertion polymerization to generate P(P FpR) with the polymer backbone containing Cp-Fe bonds. Growth of the backbone led to a cyclic conformation with close end-to-end distances, which facilitated the cyclization. This conformation-directed cyclization was attributed to the piano-stool metal-coordination geometry of the repeating units and the low rotational barrier of the Cp-Fe bonds in the backbone. The produced macrocycles, which contain a metal carbonyl coordination structure in their backbones, are rigid, unlike many organic macrocycles. The macrocycles thus have a large excluded volume. This new type of metal carbonyl macrocycle will be of interest as a building block for supramolecular chemistry and in the exploration of novel materials.
On-Surface Pseudo-High-Dilution Synthesis of Macrocycles: Principle and Mechanism

Abstract:Macrocycles have attracted much attention due to their specific "endless" topology, which results in extraordinary properties compared to related linear (open chain) molecules. However, challenges still remain in their controlled synthesis with well-defined constitution and geometry. Here, we report the successful application of the (pseudo-)high-dilution method to the conditions of on surface synthesis in ultrahigh vacuum. This approach leads to high yields (up to 84%) of cyclic hyperbenzene ([18]-honeycombene) via an Ullmann-type reaction from 4,4"-dibromo-meta-terphenyl (DMTP) as precursor on a Ag(111) surface. The mechanism of macrocycle formation was explored in detail using scanning tunneling microscopy and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. We propose that the dominant pathway for hyperbenzene (MTP)(6) formation is the stepwise desilverization of an organometallic (MTP-Ag)(6) macrocycle, which forms via cyclization of (MTP-Ag)(6) chains under pseudo-high-dilution conditions. The high probability of cyclization on the stage of the organometallic phase results from the reversibility of the C-Ag bond. The case is different from that in solution, in which cyclization typically occurs on the stage of a covalently bonded open-chain precursor. This difference in the cyclization mechanism on a surface compared to that in solution stems mainly from the 2D confinement exerted by the surface template, which hinders the flipping of chain segments necessary for cyclization.

Abstract:On-surface synthesis relies on carefully designed molecular precursors that are thermally activated to afford desired, covalently coupled architectures. Here, we study the intramolecular reactions of vinyl groups in a poly- para -phenylene-based model system and provide a comprehensive description of the reaction steps taking place on the Au(111) surface under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. We find that vinyl groups successfully cyclize with the phenylene rings in the ortho positions, forming a dimethyl-dihydroindenofluorene as the repeating unit, which can be further dehydrogenated to a dimethylene-dihydroindenofluorene structure. Interestingly, the obtained polymer can be transformed cleanly into thermodynamically stable polybenzo[ k ]tetraphene at higher temperature, involving a previously elusive pentagon-to-hexagon transformation via ring opening and rearrangement on a metal surface. Our insights into the reaction cascade unveil fundamental chemical processes involving vinyl groups on surfaces. Because the formation of specific products is highly temperature-dependent, this innovative approach offers a valuable tool for fabricating complex, low-dimensional nanostructures with high precision and yield.
