Abstract:In this article, we proposed a hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HCPCF) ring resonator based on a spatial coupling method, and the component is only 22 × 30 × 6 mm 3 . When using a 7-core photonic crystal fiber with a mode field diameter of 10um, a ring resonator with the measured finesse of 18 can be built, indicating that the coupling loss is as low as 0.41 dB. Compact and low-loss closed resonator is accomplished using a highly integrated free space silicon optical bench manufactured by deep silicon etching and tiny optical lens package technology, which promotes the practicality of the HCPCF gyro. In addition, two important factors affecting the spatial optical coupling efficiency, the lens type and the fiber mode field size, are investigated in this article. The obtained results are instructive for all spatial optical coupling systems.
A Simple Approach to Fiber-Based Tunable Microcavity with High Coupling Efficiency

Abstract:We report a simple technique for the realization of fiber-based Fabry-Pérot microcavities with large Q/V values as well as high cavity-to-fiber coupling efficiencies. The open microcavity we demonstrate consists of a flat mirror and a concave mirror on the tip of a single mode optical fiber. Combining hydrofluoric acid chemical wet etching with CO2 laser reflow, we obtain a fiber-tip atomically smooth concave surface with a diameter of 4.7 μm determined by the fiber core size. The concave surface with a spherical profile is automatically aligned with the fiber core, which enables high cavity-to-fiber power coupling efficiency (higher than 90%) with an optimal fiber-tip mirror's radius of curvature based on numerical simulation results. After distributed-Bragg-reflector coating, we have realized a wavelength-tunable open microcavity with a quality factor Q exceeding 1000 and a mode volume V of 13.6 μm3, and laser emission is demonstrated from this microcavity.

Abstract:The authors demonstrate critical coupling condition in microfiber loops wrapped around a copper rod. The critical coupling condition is achieved by tuning the coupling coefficient to balance the circulation loss. A maximum extinction of 30 dB has been obtained around the critical coupling point with a quality factor of about 4000. The resonance wavelength can be tuned by applying an electric current through the copper rod. The copper rod, usually deemed as a high-loss medium for handling light at optical frequency, serves as a low-index robust support for achieving critical coupling in the microfiber loops with acceptable loss. Abstract:Based on low-loss fusion splicing of microfibers using a CO laser, we demonstrate free-standing microfiber closed-loop resonators. Loaded Q-factors of 110 500 with a finesse of 15.3 are obtained around 1.5-mu m wavelength in a 2.4-mm-diameter closed-loop resonator suspended in air. The possibility of tuning resonant responses by changing the coupling efficiency is also demonstrated.

Abstract:We report a theoretical and experimental study of coupling between a whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microdisk resonator and a fiber taper which exchange energies at two distinct regions. We observe an oscillatory behavior in the coupling strength as a function of the distance between the two coupling regions when a fiber taper is moved laterally above the resonator at fixed vertical distance. This oscillation is clearly seen in the linewidth of the resonance as well as in the on-resonance transmission. A theoretical model considering for two-point coupling successfully explains the experimental observations as being a result of the interference between the light fields coupled into and out of the resonator at two distinct regions and the light transmitted through the waveguide. Critical coupling in two-region coupling is a collective result of the coupling at two different coupling regions, and does not require critical coupling at both or at any one of the two coupling regions. This relaxes the conditions for achieving critical coupling in waveguide-resonator systems. The discovery of this previously unnoticed oscillatory behavior in two-region coupling between a WGM resonator and a waveguide will benefit both fundamental studies and practical applications based on WGM resonators.
Continuously Tunable Time Delay and Advance in Coupling-Modulated Microring Resonators

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate continuously tunable optical time delay and advance using coupling-modulated microring resonators (CMR) with a 15-mu m radius. By modulating the coupling coefficient through thermo-optical effect based on micro-heater, the coupling state of the microring is flexibly controlled; as a result, a large dynamic time tuning range (from time advance to delay) is achieved. The CMR device based on SOI is fabricated with commercial 0.18-mu m CMOS technology. A novel micro-heater structure was firstly used to thermally tune the coupling state of the micoring. Pulse delay and advance from -15 ps to 85 ps is experimentally realized.
Fiber Taper Coupled High-Quality-Factor Planar Microdisk

Abstract:A fiber taper can evanescently couple to whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in a planar silica microdisk for observing the optical properties of the microdisk cavity. It is revealed that WGMs have very high quality (Q) factors by controlling the air gap between the taper and the microdisk. The best coupling efficiency from the taper to the microdisk is as high as 98%, and can be continuously adjusted from the under-coupling, critical-coupling to over-coupling regimes. The influence of the laboratory circumstance such as surface contamination on the microdisk is also discussed. It is experimentally shown that the high-Q-factor (10(5)) modes can be kept for a long period in a general laboratory circumstance.

Abstract:We experimentally investigate the resonant response in a microsphere coupled with a biconical microfiber coupler (MFC) composed of single- and/or few-mode fibers. The evolution between Lorentz and Fano resonances dependent on the phase difference of the supermodes is demonstrated along the coupling region of the MFC. A flexible narrow-linewidth add-drop filter can be simultaneously achieved with the advantage of easy alignment and efficiently evanescent coupling. In addition, the mode conversion process of the microsphere is demonstrated, and the purity of the LP11 mode in a coupler at the whispering gallery mode resonance is analyzed. The proposed MFC coupling system holds great promising applications in optical filtering and sensing, mode switching, and micro-resonator-based combs.

Abstract:We theoretically describe and study coupling between two whispering-gallery-mode microcavities through a side coupled fiber taper. The two microcavities can couple to each other bidirectionally with only one fiber taper waveguide due to the modal coupling between a pair of whispering-gallery modes traveling in opposite directions. By choosing appropriate physical parameters, some interesting spectra, such as electromagnetically-induced transparency-like coherent transmission and band-like reflection, can be obtained in such a system. Slow light is discussed in this paper as a direct application of the coupled microresonator structure. This structure also has potential application in coupled cavity quantum electrodynamics.

Abstract:“Whispering gallery modes” (WGM) optical micro- and nano resonators are important category in nanophotonics researches. The ultra-high quality factor (Q) makes them promising ranging from sensors, filters to low threshold sources. In the above supplications, the frequency stability of the WGM is critical, which is determined by several factors. In this paper, using the microsphere resonator we construct a robust packaged microsphere-taper coupling system (MTCS) to stabilize the resonant WGMs. Furthermore, a stable frequency references platform based on the packaged microcavity unit is constructed. This stable frequency references platform can eliminate the noise of the WGM, and promote the microresonator researches.

Abstract:Whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) in a zeolite cylinder have been effectively coupled with a low-loss fiber taper. The fiber transmission spectrum directly shows the WGM distribution, which agrees well with the theoretical prediction based on geometric optics. Due to other scattering and absorbing mechanisms, the measured quality factors of the WGMs are limited to approximately 800. This result shows that the fiber taper provides a powerful tool for coupling WGMs of a zeolite cylinder, and this taper-coupled zeolite can be a potential microcavity system for the cavity quantum electrodynamics and the microlaser.

Abstract:An integrated in-fiber coupler is proposed and demonstrated, which can excite whispering-gallery mode (WGM) in a microsphere resonator. This device is fabricated firstly by using femtosecond laser micromachining and a fusing splicing technique to create an inner air cavity with a suspended fiber core, then an open micro-channel is drilled on the top of the inner air cavity, and finally a microsphere is placed inside the air cavity, in contact with the suspended fiber core, to excite the WGM through the evanescent field. In the transmission spectrum of the device, the slopes of the two asymmetric Fano resonance lines of 41.12 dB/nm and $ - {18.46}\;{\rm dB/nm}$-18.46dB/nm, respectively, and a symmetrical Lorentz line with a quality factor of ${9.32} \times {{10}^3}$9.32×103 can be obtained simultaneously. Such an in-fiber WGM microsphere resonator has the advantages of compact structure, convenient operation, and high durability.

Abstract:We report on fabrication of a microtoroid resonator of a high-quality factor (i. e., Q-factor of ~3.24x10^6 measured under the critical coupling condition) using femtosecond laser three-dimensional (3D) micromachining. Coupling of light into and out of the microresonator has been realized with a fiber taper that is reliably assembled with the microtoroid. The assembly of the fiber taper to the microtoroid is achieved by welding the fiber taper onto the sidewall of the microtoroid using CO2 laser irradiation. The integrated microresonator maintains a high Q-factor of 3.21x10^5 as measured in air.

Abstract:Optical resonators with high-quality factors (Q-factor) constitute the main building block for many photonic devices capitalizing on light-matter interactions, ranging from light emitters to biochemical sensors. While a high Q-factor enhances light-matter interactions, it also limits the device operation bandwidth. Here we propose and numerically analyze a generic coupling scheme to overcome the apparent trade-off. By using an orthogonal grating, broadband optical coupling into high-Q cavities of diverse geometric configurations can be achieved. As an example, the approach is applied to demonstrate over a 28-fold optical absorption enhancement across a 150 nm band around 900 nm wavelength in single-layer graphene embedded inside a Fabry-Perot cavity.

Abstract:Precise diameter control is critical for many optical micro/nanofiber (MNF) applications. We demonstrate real-time MNF diameter control with improved accuracy and precision. Different from earlier works, a white light source is applied to monitor the transmittance during fiber pulling process. Terminated directly by the transmission intensity drops that indicate the cutoff of TE01 mode at particular wavelengths, we achieve diameter control accuracy and precision as high as 2nm and 3nm, respectively. The diameter control range from 360 nm to 680 nm that is demonstrated in our experiment can be extended to several tens of micron by exciting other high order modes.

Abstract:We experimentally studied the transmission spectrum of a coupled resonator structure in which a low-Q microdisk and a high-Q microtoroid indirectly interact with each other mediated by a fiber taper. Asymmetric Fano resonances were observed and could be controlled to change periodically by adjusting the distance between the two microresonators. It is revealed that the Fano resonance originates from the coupling of the two modes belonging to the two microresonators. The observed period of distance change is around 8 μm, which shows good agreement with the theoretical prediction by the beat of multiple propagating modes in the fiber taper.

Abstract:We numerically investigate the optical properties of three-dimensional (3D) microfiber/nanofiber (MNF) couplers and resonators, by using the finite-difference time domain method. It is the first time that the polarization-dependent transmission properties of 3D MNF couplers and resonators are investigated numerically. For the knot coupler, the twisted structure contributes to the inter-polarization coupling, and the envelope of intraand inter-polarization coupling coefficients, respectively, has the trend as a (cosc)2 or (sinc)2 function. For the loop resonator, the inter-polarization coupling coefficients are relatively small. However, the coupling coefficients for both polarization states are discriminated obviously. The high Q-factor resonance spectrum in one polarized state may be overwhelmed by that of the other. We also investigate the mechanism of resonance spectrum splitting, and find out that the inter-polarization coupling at the coupler region degenerates the resonance spectrum and gives rise to the splitting. The results provide guidance to design 3-D MNF devices, for example, high Q-factor resonators.

Abstract:The optical fiber taper coupling with its refractive index gradually changing along its propagation axis caused by photosensitivity was analyzed theoretically. The numerical results for two different taper shapes in step-index fiber show that the coupling of fundamental mode to the reflected mode and to high-order mode are relatively small provided the change is gradual. The experiment demonstrates that this index taper is suitable for interconnection of two dissimilar fibers. It may also be applicable for coupling of laser sources or integrated waveguides to fibers.
