Abstract:The decision of mode of entry and knowledge should be simultaneously considered when an MNC expands into a foreign market. Previous studies tend to view them in isolation, mainly focusing on minimizing the transaction cost, and their conclusions are partial and may be untrue in volatile environments. Knowledge is the source of sustainable competitive advantage of a firm, and should be taken into consideration while the firm makes the choice of mode of entry. This paper analyzes the role of knowledge and its influence on a firm's mode of entry when deciding to expand overseas and puts forward some suggestions.

Abstract:It's a strategic and urgent issue to choose a proper entry mode for international entrepreneurial entities. And knowledge transferring across borders is necessary to international entrepreneurial performance with the knowledge economy, coming. While stickiness of knowledge transferring across borders has a critical effect on decision making of international entrepreneurial modes. Firstly this research does a mathematical analysis by cost minimization. approach. Then on the base of theoretical results and surveying in 122 international entrepreneurial entities located in China, this research empirically finds that stickiness of knowledge transferring across borders actually affects choice of international entrepreneurial modes. Also this study result shows industry is significant variable to decision making of international entrepreneurial modes while the cultural distance is insignificant to choice of modes.
How Do Linking, Leveraging and Learning Capabilities Influence the Entry Mode Choice for Multinational Firms from Emerging Markets?

Abstract:PurposeBased on the linkage-leverage-learning (LLL) framework developed by Mathews (2006), the purpose of this paper is to examine how linking, leveraging and learning capabilities influence the choice of foreign-entry mode, and the way such influences are contingent on context factors in the emerging markets.Design/methodology/approachContrary to a prior literature applying the LLL framework, which mainly used case studies, this paper adopts a quantitative approach and is based on a sample of 321 Chinese listed companies to test the hypotheses.FindingsThe results show that multinational firms from emerging markets (EMFs) with stronger LLL capabilities are more likely to choose the wholly owned mode in foreign entries. In addition, the relationship between linking capability and wholly owned entry mode choice is weaker at higher levels of cultural distance between home and host country. At the same time, the relationship between learning capability and wholly owned entry mode choice is weaker at higher levels of cultural distance between home and host country, and of institutional distance between prior entries and the focal entry.Research limitations/implicationsAn entry mode strategy for firms without ownership advantages and the identification of boundary conditions for applying different LLL capabilities are recommended. The generalizability of the findings from a single-country setting still needs further validation with other emerging economies.Originality/valueThis paper treats internationalization of firms from emerging countries with a different perspective. The underlying idea in this study is that internationalization is not only a process for EMFs to utilize externally accessible assets abroad, but also a process of simultaneously combining internationalization with experiential learning and capability utilization in overseas markets. In addition, the authors also contribute to the literature by providing strong empirical evidence for validating the LLL model and extending the existing entry mode studies.

Abstract:PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to use the theoretical perspective of structural inertia as a unique lens to study foreign sequential entry mode choices of multinational firms.Design/methodology/approachIt adopts quantitative analysis of a sample of 121 Chinese publicly listed firms with 564 foreign entry incidents in the 2001-2012 period to test the hypotheses.FindingsThe empirical results show that multinational firms have a tendency to adopt the same mode in the subsequent entry as the number of prior entry mode choice of a given type (joint venture (JV) in this study) increases. The results support the theoretical prediction that organizations repeat their past activities due to structural inertia. Moreover, such an inertia effect in foreign sequential entry mode choices becomes stronger for older multinational firms, larger multinational firms and state-owned multinational firms.Research limitations/implicationsConsistent with existing research, this study focuses on the entry mode choice between JV and wholly owned subsidiaries. However, it is better to examine the relationship identified in the study for different types of entry mode choices to assess result generalizability.Practical implicationsIt reminds managers of multinational firms that they should be cautious to the influence of structural inertia that can be a barrier to strategic flexibility when they make entry mode choices.Originality/valueThe main contribution of this study resides in introducing structural inertia perspective to help understand the determinants of foreign sequential entry mode choices of multinational firms.

Abstract:This paper develops a dynamic discrete-choice model of the entry mode decision and a linear function of foreign subsidiary performance conditional on being foreign greenfields or foreign acquisitions through an institutional perspective.It uses the Heckman two-stage approach to analyze a sample of 501 foreign subsidiaries from China's outward FDI in 2001-2010.This study finds that subsidiary integration,characteristics of MNE parents and the host country influences the entry mode decision.Controlling for entry mode self-selection and other factors,the results show that acquisitions outperform greenfields at low and intermediate levels of subsidiary integration,but that greenfields outperform acquisitions at higher integration levels.

Abstract:How do Chinese firms make their entry-mode decision for their outward investments? Based on the three theoretical perspectives that balance the "strategy tripod," our study conducted empirical tests using survey data collected from outward-investing Chinese firms. We found that the cost advantage of the investing firm and learning opportunities in the host industry have positive effects on the likelihood of a Chinese firm opting for wholly owned subsidiary against joint-venture entry mode, while the market attractiveness of the host industry, host-country restrictions, cultural barriers, and cognitive pressures have negative effects. Abstract:Selection of entry modes is an important decision during internationalization process of Chinese firms. Using the case of BOE group purchasing HYDIS Company, we analyzed the background and process of the entry mode decision-making and the strategic motives of the two sides and the evolution of conflicts and gave some typical events. Further, we discussed in an in-depth way the selection of strategies for the internationalization of Chinese firms, especially when they are to enter the developed countries' market. Then, we recommended the entry modes to the Chinese firms and stressed that great attention should be paid to the cultural differences and their effects on the technology transfers in the high-tech industries. We also pointed out the importance of selecting low-risk entry mode according to the dynamic concept.

Abstract:Integrating the behavioral theory of the firm and social capital theory, this study examines how performance shortfalls and executive social relations jointly affect firms' trade-offs between the shared-control entry mode and full-control entry mode. This study argues that, for new overseas entries, performance shortfalls cause firms to prefer the shared-control entry mode. This is attributed to the fact that performance shortfalls increase firms' resource constraints and reduce their information search scope. This, in turn, leads decision-makers to prefer the shared-control entry mode, because that mode requires fewer resources, less information collection, and lower processing capabilities. In addition, guided by social capital theory, this study also finds that the positive effect of performance shortfalls on the shared-control entry mode is weakened when executives have social relations, either overseas or in banks. Further analysis shows that, compared with less-developed economies, firms facing a performance shortfall are more inclined to adopt the shared-control mode to enter developed economies. By clarifying the joint effect of performance shortfalls and executive social relations on firms' overseas equity entry modes, this study deepens the understanding of firms' choices of overseas equity entry modes.

Abstract:Location and entry mode choices are considered as the core strategy decisions while firms invest abroad. This paper uses a sample of Chinese firms' direct investment from 1996 to 2004 worldwide, and examines the relationship between the location choice and the foreign subsidiaries survival from both economic and cultural perspectives, and furthermore analyzes the contingent effects of cultural distance on the relationship between economic distance and the FDI (foreign direct investment) performance. Through logistic regression analysis, the results suggest that in the host countries with higher economic distance and lower cultural distance compared with home countries, foreign subsidiaries have better chances to survive, with subsidiaries established through greenfield investment enjoying more chances to survive than through acquisitions. This paper also compares the predicting power of country and firm levels' effects on the FDI performance to know the variation in the foreign affiliate performance.

Abstract:Emerging market multinational enterprises (EMNEs) play a vital role in global economic development and usually adopt aggressive internationalization strategies. However, the volatile global environment has caused EMNEs to face various risks in their overseas expansion. To maximize the competitive advantages and achieve successful expansion, EMNEs should choose the most suitable foreign entry mode. Therefore, EMNEs need to understand what environmental factors affect their decision-making and how they influence the choice of entry modes, especially in a volatile environment. This review examines 44 selected journal articles from 1996 to June 2021 on the environmental volatility determinants of EMNEs’ entry mode choice. The entry mode choice we examined is mainly wholly-owned subsidiary versus international joint venture. We categorized the environmental volatility determinants investigated in the literature we reviewed into country-level factors (such as cross-national distance) and industry-level factors (such as industry condition). The main contributions are: (1) the review reveals three research gaps in extant studies, which are lack of research on external environmental factors, lack of research on multinationals from less concerning emerging economies, and lack of research on small-to-medium (SMEs) enterprises. (2) Practically, the study highlights the importance of understanding external environmental factors for EMNEs to make the most suitable entry mode decisions.

Abstract:Africa has achieved the fastest growth rate of inward foreign direct investment (FDI) recently. Yet heightened political hazards present substantial challenges to foreign firms in Africa. This study examines the entry strategies that firms may take to mitigate such hazards by exploring the relationship between political hazards and entry mode choices in Africa. We further consider how an investing firm's host country experience and foreign aid provided by its home country government to host countries in Africa can influence this relationship. In a sample of listed Chinese firms' investments in Africa from 2000 to 2014, we find that Chinese firms tend to use the joint venture mode when political hazards are high in an African country. This relationship is weakened when they accumulate host country experience and when the Chinese government's foreign aid to an African country increases. Our findings point to firm-level strategies to mitigate political hazards as well as instruments available to home country governments to help their multinational firms operating in host countries characterized by unstable political environments.

Abstract:Drawing on multiple theoretical perspectives, this study explores how external, strategic and internal factors affect the service industry's choice of entry. This study surveyed 576 international service firms in Taiwan; 64 valid sample firms were included (45.3% of respondents were CEOs or chairs; 10.9% were vice presidents). Using logistic regression and nonparametric statistics for analysis, this study finds that (1) the factors affecting the service industry are different from those affecting the manufacturing industry; (2) external factors have no significant effect on entry mode choice, but corporate strategy and internal factors do; (3) only capability exploitation has positive effect on entry mode choice; client-following motivation, market-seeking motivation and capability exploration would not influence the entry mode; (4) high value of specific assets, such as brand reputation, and knowledge-intensive service firm are more suitable to take wholly own model; (5) a low-control mode is more likely to ensure service quality and innovation advantages. We also conclude that the definition of asset specificity in the literature is too broad. Asset specificity and the value of specific assets will have different effects on the choice of entry mode. This study makes several important theoretical contributions and has managerial implications for service firms in newly industrialized international economics that are designing their international entry strategies.

Abstract:abstract Considerable research has explored international mode choices. However, results regarding the direct influence of the host country institutional context on entry mode choice remain rather inconclusive with positive, negative, and mixed empirical findings. This study examines informal institutional distance and formal institutional risk as moderators on the relationship between frequently examined decision‐making criteria and the entry mode decision of small and medium‐sized enterprises (SMEs). We demonstrate that the influence of international experience, proprietary know‐how, and strategic importance on SME mode choice is contingent on the institutional context of the host country. Hypotheses are tested on a sample of 227 German SMEs. Our empirical results support our theoretical predictions, which forge a link between institutional and SME entry mode literature.

Abstract:With the closer relations of the global economy,the inter-national operation enterprises are faced with a competitive environ-ment with great uncertainty and risk,therefore they are affected by varieties of risks directly and indirectly.Meanwhile,Chinese enter-prises encounter diversified risk and resistance when they are devel-oping oversea markets.Therefore,risk identification is the chief step of risk management in the enterprises international operation,and also the premise and basis of risk avoidance and countermeasure.This research takes Chinese enterprises international operation as the research background,based on the theoretical deduction of the international risk classification and identification,the key risks are identified and focus analyzed with regard to the different entry modes through empirical research.This research uses the interna-tional market entry mode classified by Anderson Otto(1996)for ref-erences and considers that there is great difference in the operation and risk included by different entry mode.So this research shows the hypothesis:there will be different key risk during the selection of international market entry mode.Through empirical research,the key risks are identified,analyzed and sorted focus with regard to the different entry modes in order to analyze the characteristics of risks of different entry modes thoroughly.According to the research,it is shown that risk identification is the same important as pursuing the international operation opportunity for the firms with a gradual in-depth internationalization process.Meanwhile,it is important for the international operation enterprises to identify the key risks with pertinence in order to establish risk precaution system,avoid international risk and effectively improve international operation performance and competitive power in the international market.

Abstract:This paper aims to explore the determinants for the Chinese firms' FDI entry mode choices.To fulfill this objective,this paper develops a series of hypotheses on the multiple influences of institutional constraints and international experiences on the Chinese firms' choices between cross border acquisitions versus new joint ventures based on the institutional perspective and the organizational learning theories.A pooling sample of cross border acquisitions and new overseas joint ventures since 2000 is collected to test the hypotheses with Logistic regressions.The results confirm that Chinese firms with greater institutional constraints will prefer to choose joint ventures,while Chinese firms with more international experience will be more likely to adopt acquisitions.This paper also discovers a lot of firm and country specific characteristics that have significant impacts on Chinese firms' FDI entry mode choices in the context of accelerative institutional transition and economic liberalization.The overall results of paper have both profound theoretical contributions to broaden the research on the issue of FDI entry mode choices in the context of emerging and developing economies,as well as practical suggestions improve Chinese firms' internationalization strategies.
