Abstract:Using the panel data of 54 countries from 2003 to 2006,this paper investigates the determinants of Chinese outward direct investment(ODI) from the perspective of investment motivation. After controlling the host economic freedom rate and bilateral trade,this paper find that Chinese outward FDI is associated with the high level of technology in developed countries,and with host market size and host natural resource endowments in developing countries. The paper finds strong support for the argument that the domestic market in developed countries does not have significant impact on Chinese ODI. Furthermore,the paper detects that Chinese multinational enterprises may neglect the domestic market in some developing countries while focusing on its abundant energy resources.

Abstract:PurposeViewing the domestic downside risk as a "pushing" factor for outward foreign direct investment (OFDI), this study aims to examine the surge in Chinese cross-border acquisitions (CBAs) between 2008 and 2017, a unique window when private firms in China were allowed to conduct CBAs. Design/methodology/approachThis study examines the effect of down-side risk on cross-border acquisition performance by using the sample of Chinese A-share listed companies from 2008 to 2017. Specifically, this study considers three kinds of systemic risk, systematic risk and idiosyncratic risk, and respectively examines their impact on CBAs activities; this study also investigates their subsequent results after CBAs activities. The contingency effect of state ownership on the above relationship is also discussed. FindingsThe findings reveal that pre-CBA systemic risk explains the volume of CBA activities; CBAs are followed by a reduction in systemic risk; the interactions between systemic risk and CBAs decrease with the level of state ownership; and the above results do not hold for traditional risk measures (i.e. systematic risk and idiosyncratic risk). Originality/valueThis study contributes to the literature by revealing the role of systemic risk as a "pushing" factor in the context of OFDI and suggesting an alternative explanation for CBAs from China: Chinese firms (especially private firms) took advantage of the rare opportunity between 2008 and 2017 given by the government to transfer assets overseas through CBA.

Abstract:This study explores the impact of local protectionism on outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) and how firms respond to local protectionism in a transition economy. We find that local protectionism exerts a negative effect on the OFDI decisions of Chinese privately-owned enterprises (POEs). However, this negative impact is weakened by POEs’ corporate philanthropy strategy, whereas corporate political activity reinforces such an impact. This research extends the lens of institutional escapism by highlighting local protectionism as a barrier to OFDI and provides new insights into how firms respond to the subnational environment by adopting various nonmarket strategies.

Abstract:This article evaluates the international location decisions made by public listed Chinese firms during the period 2006–2008, using a Poisson count data regression model. Further, we categorize the firms into state-controlled and privately owned according to majority ownership. We find that the determinants of internationalization differ based on ownership. State-controlled firms are attracted to countries with large sources of natural resources and risky political environments. Private firms are more market seekers. Although all firms have strategic intent, the attraction is commercially viable technology rather than core research content. Our findings also show that existing theories can sufficiently explain the actions of private Chinese firms, but adjustments are needed to understand the behavior of state-controlled multinationals.

Abstract:This research examines the factors determining whether or not exporting firms expand to outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) as part of their internationalisation strategy, using a recent survey of Chinese private-owned enterprises. We carry out a multi-dimensional analysis to investigate the impact of firm productivity, internal resources and the external environment on OFDI decisions, including both the decision to undertake OFDI and the volume of OFDI flows. It is found that productivity, technology-based capability, export experience, industry entry barriers, subnational institutions and intermediary institutional support affect firms’ OFDI decisions. The findings have important policy and managerial implications.
How does home and host-country policy uncertainty affect outward FDI? Firm-level evidence from China

Abstract:How the foreign direct investment behavior of enterprises changes in response to the risks and instability of government economic policy changes is a relevant issue which, however, has not been extensively studied yet. Accordingly, this paper establishes a linear probability regression model to study the foreign direct investment behavior of Chinese A-share listed companies in 13 countries between 2003 and 2020 and explores whether multinational companies change their OFDI decisions when the economic policy environment of China and trade-related countries are unstable. A firm heterogeneity analysis and phased discussions were conducted, and a robust conclusion was finally drawn. The results show that (1) China's economic policy uncertainty promotes China's foreign direct investment, while the host country's monetary policy uncertainty inhibits China's foreign direct investment. (2) The foreign direct investment decisions of enterprises are affected not only by the macroeconomic and policy environment of the two trading countries but also by their development characteristics. (3) Sino-US trade frictions and the financial crisis have different effects on China's foreign direct investment.

Abstract:This study uses the resource-based view of a firm to examine the outward internationalization of private firms in China. We investigate the extent to which advantages/disadvantages of resource endowment and organizing capability of Chinese private enterprises (relative to both state-owned enterprises and foreign-invested enterprises at home) may drive outward internationalization and affect their risk-taking tendency when going international. Our analyses of 553 Chinese private enterprises show that a Chinese private firm's likelihood of venturing abroad is associated with resource endowment advantages vis-à-vis foreign-invested enterprises, organizing capability advantages vis-à-vis state-owned enterprises, and organizing capability disadvantages vis-à-vis foreign-invested enterprises. These same advantages (or disadvantages) in organizing capabilities also increase a firm's likelihood of choosing a high-risk entry mode. We also find that a firm's resource endowment and organizing capabilities interact with each other and mutually enhance each other's effect on the likelihood of outward internationalization.

Abstract:How do Chinese firms make their entry-mode decision for their outward investments? Based on the three theoretical perspectives that balance the "strategy tripod," our study conducted empirical tests using survey data collected from outward-investing Chinese firms. We found that the cost advantage of the investing firm and learning opportunities in the host industry have positive effects on the likelihood of a Chinese firm opting for wholly owned subsidiary against joint-venture entry mode, while the market attractiveness of the host industry, host-country restrictions, cultural barriers, and cognitive pressures have negative effects. Abstract:Using recent Chinese data on outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) (2003–11), this study shows that Chinese OFDI has expanded in both distant developing and developed countries. Statistical analysis suggests that Chinese investors are attracted to countries with large market size, rich resources and strategic assets, and demand a sound legal system but avoid countries with the best rule of law. Chinese investors do not directly respond to political risk and corruption. However, they favour politically stable locations when seeking markets and care about political stability and corruption control when seeking resources. Institutional factors play a more significant role in the investment decision making prior to the actual investments, but the moderating role of institutions is influential for the actual investments. Chinese investors are more likely to seek markets and resources in developing countries, with careful evaluation of institutional quality.

Abstract:Despite the rich body of research on the outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) by Chinese multinationals, little attention has been given to the fact that China’s OFDI is facing a high failure rate even in their initial attempt to enter a foreign market. Grounded on institutional theory, this study provides a nuanced view of the expansion dynamic of Chinese multinational firms overseas using a unique dataset that contains both successful and troubled Chinese foreign market entry attempts between 2018 and 2021. We find that at the firm level, state-owned firms are more likely to face difficulties when trying to enter a new market compared to their private counterparts. Firms’ corporate social responsibility (CSR) reporting reduces the chance of failure. These effects are conditioned on the political, economic, and cultural distances between the home and host counties.

Abstract:The extant literature offers inconsistent predictions and conflicting evidence regarding the relationship between state ownership and the internationalization of emerging market firms (EMFs). Drawing on institutional theory, we examine the moderating roles of political and economic institutions at the subnational and national levels in the link between state ownership and EMFs’ outward foreign direct investment (OFDI). Based on a sample of 1421 OFDI projects involving 286 Chinese listed firms in 115 host countries between 2003 and 2016, we find that state ownership can scale up OFDI when Chinese firms are headquartered in subnational regions with high institutional development or low economic development, or when political relationships between home and host countries are amicable or market growth in a host country is slow; otherwise, state ownership hinders OFDI. These findings offer new insights into the relationship between state ownership and the internationalization of EMFs.

On one hand, by integrating conventional eclectic theory and Chinese institutional context, a series of novel hypotheses is proposed that highlights some specific institutional advantages Chinese outward investors could exploit. In this way, the paper provides an analytical framework useful for better understanding of internationalization of enterprises from other emerging and transitional economies.

Abstract:This paper discusses on the selection of Chinese enterprises' FDI(Foreign Direct Investment) entry mode between the sole-proprietorship mode and the share-ownership mode.A hypothesis is derived from an analytical framework established to probe into the entry mode of Chinese enterprises' ownership structure.Base on an international questionnaire survey with 132 valid feedback copies,and with the help of the software SPSS 12.0,a Logistic model is set up for the choice of FDI ownership structure.This model reveals that such variables as the investing method and the internationalization level of the company have strong negative influences on the sole-proprietorship mode,while the preference of power centralization has a strong positive influence on it,and some others such as technological advantage,technological invisibles,market potential,and cultural variation have no significant influence on the choice of ownership structure.This paper also attempts to probe into the relationship between the choice of ownership structure and the performance of the company.It is recommended that Chinese enterprises,those who havestepped outor are going tostep out,focus on the influence of the internationalization level,power centralization and cultural variation on the entry mode,and value on the fostering of talents with an international view.

Abstract:International marketing and international business researches always focus on the firms' international expansion and international performance. While, only few literatures have studied Chinese firms' expansion questions. The distinct difference between Chinese firms and west countries firms is the enterprises' ownership. We extend the international industry risk perception framework to include the unique features of the Chinese context, using empirical analysis, the result shows that (1) Industry risk perception has negative effect on the international entry mode choice; (2) The enterprises' ownership acts as a very important moderator between industry risk perception and international entry mode choice; (3) Entry mode choice heavily affects firms' international performance.
Chinese Firms' Internationalization Paths by Strategic Asset-Seeking Outward Foreign Direct Investment

Abstract:FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) outflows from People's Republic of China increased dramatically since increasing firms' accelerated internationalization. But the conditions of Chinese firms' outward FDI are quite different from that of most firms from developed countries. FDI from developed countries to China is usually exploitation of advantages the investors already possessed like cutting-edge technology and global brand reputation. But FDI from China to developed countries is exploration of such advantages. In other word, outward FDI becomes an effective way for Chinese firms to gain strategic assets for internationalization. This paper adopts strategic asset-seeking as the motivation of Chinese firms' outward FDI and identified different internationalization paths through case studies. Based on interviews and complementary secondary materials we found out, 1) the most important two strategic assets for Chinese firms' internationalization are technology and brand, 2) the three different internationalization paths are path by technology sourcing outward FDI, path by brand acquiring outward FDI, and path by both technology and brand seeking outward FDI.
Determinants of Chinese energy OFDI location decisions and entry failure risk: The roles of public diplomacy endeavors and firm investment strategies

Abstract:Identifying the key factors that affect the location decision and entry failure risk of Chinese enterprises' outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) is an issue of great significance both in theory and practice. Using an original and unique project-level panel dataset from 2005 to 2018, this study explores the determinants of OFDI location decisions and entry failure risk in the overseas energy sector undertaken by Chinese enterprises. The results demonstrate strong evidence that the Chinese public diplomacy endeavors stimulate energy OFDI decisions conducted by Chinese firms in terms of both investment tendency and magnitude. By contrast, most macroeconomic features of host countries are not verified as determinants of energy OFDI. Specifically, high-level formal strategic partnerships and the current informal bilateral friendly relations are crucial for decisions. More importantly, the OFDI-strategy test shows that the horizontal and conglomerate OFDI as well as the financial alliance enable a reduction in OFDI entry failure risk, whereas more frustrations are incurred when firms engage in vertical OFDI and cross-border mergers and acquisitions (CM&A). Additionally, the entry failure risk varies substantially with the sectors of both Chinese parent firms and overseas affiliates. These results are robust after addressing the potential endogeneity and sample selection bias, which provide the necessary evidence for the optimization of China's public diplomacy policies and firm strategies related with energy OFDI.

Abstract:We develop the concept of institutional fragility to investigate the outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) behavior of firms from emerging economies. When different dimensions of institutions are not progressing at the same pace, internal friction and conflict arise during institutional development. Such fragility could push a firm to escape its home country as a strategic response. Using a sample of 578,360 Chinese firm-year observations over a 10-year period, we find that institutional fragility at the provincial level is associated with increased OFDI decision. This relationship is weaker when firms have high productivity or have been controlled by state with high ownership, stronger when firms have a high level of export network. Overall, our institutional fragility perspective extends and enriches the institution-based view and offers new insights into OFDI behavior.
