Abstract:The cascade oxidative annulation reactions of aryl imidazolium salts with alkynes proceed efficiently in the presence of [Cp*RhCl2]2 and Cu(OAc)2·H2O to give substituted imidazo[1,2-a]-quinolinium salts and benzo[ij]imidazo[2,1,5-de]quinolizinium salts. The reactions were through the normal and abnormal N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-directed cyclometalation, alkyne insertion into the Rh-C bond, and reductive elimination of alkenyl and NHC ligands. The reactions are highly regioselective with unsymmetrical alkynes and can be achieved stepwise by controlling the reaction conditions. This provides a new application of NHCs as directing groups and substrates in the synthesis of fused N-heterocyclic compounds. The N-substituting group of the benzo[ij]imidazo[2,1,5-de]quinolizinium salts could be removed successfully with pyridine to afford benzo[ij]imidazo[2,1,5-de]quinolizines in excellent yields. Moreover, some of the benzo[ij]imidazo[2,1,5-de]quinolizinium salts exhibit intense fluorescence which might be useful in organic electronic materials.

Abstract:A Cp*Rh-III-catalyzed annulative carbooxygenation of challenging 1,1-disubstituted alkenes triggered by C-H activation of N-aryloxyacetamides has been established, which affords 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran derivatives with a quaternary carbon center in good to excellent yields under mild redox-neutral conditions. An amide group on the alkenes is essential for the process, and may inhibit the beta-H elimination from C(sp3)-Rh species by saturating the rhodium center through coordination. Furthermore, mechanistic insights obtained from control experiments suggest a mechanism involving a Rh-III-Rh-V-Rh-III catalytic cycle.

Abstract:Abstract A Rh-catalyzed electrochemical vinylic C–H annulation of acrylamides with alkynes has been developed in an undivided cell, affording cyclic products in good to excellent yield. Divergent syntheses of α-pyridones and cyclic imidates are accomplished by employing N-phenyl acrylamides and N-tosyl acrylamides as substrates, respectively. Additionally, excellent regioselectivities are achieved when using unsymmetrical alkynes. This electrochemical process is environmentally benign compared to traditional transition metal-catalyzed C–H annulations because it avoids the use of stoichiometric metal oxidants. DFT calculations elucidated the reaction mechanism and origins of substituent-controlled chemoselectivity. The sequential C–H activation and alkyne insertion under rhodium catalysis leads to the seven-membered ring vinyl-rhodium intermediate. This intermediate undergoes either the classic neutral concerted reductive elimination to produce α-pyridones, or the ionic stepwise pathway to produce cyclic imidates.

Abstract:Double C-H activations of C(5)-H and Csp(2)-H of 2-substituted N-vinyl- or arylimidazoles were realized without heteroatom-directing assistance by rhodium(III) catalyst. Abstract:Described herein is the merging of allylic C(sp(3))-H activation and directed C(sp(2))-H activation into a single approach for discovering unprecedented chemical transformations. As a proof-of-concept, we disclose for the first time the rhodium-catalyzed regioselective oxidative annulation of anilines with allylbenzenes to deliver a variety of indoles. In this work, the C3 and C2 positions of the allylic segment are set to construct C-N and C-C bonds, respectively.

Abstract:Cp*Rh(III)‐catalyzed regioselective C−H annulation and alkenylation of 2‐pyridones with terminal alkynes have been developed. The cationic Cp*Rh(III) catalytic system containing FeCl3 additive enables annulation of 1‐(2‐pyridyl)‐2‐pyridones with terminal alkynes, providing efficient access to 5,7‐diarylated 2‐quinolinones. The reaction pathway can be switched to alkenylation with [Cp*RhCl2]2 as the catalyst, NaOAc as the additive and HOAc as the solvent, affording C6‐alkenylated 1‐(2‐pyridyl)‐2‐pyridones in high yields. These protocols accommodate a wide range of substrates with good functional group compatibility.

Abstract:The mechanism of the rhodium-catalyzed cascade oxidative annulation of benzoylacetonitrile with alkynes is investigated using density functional theory calculations. The result shows that the reaction undergoes a stepwise annulation process, wherein the 1-naphthol acts as an intermediate. The first-step annulation involves the sp(3) C-H bond cleavage, sp(2) C-H bond cleavage, alkyne insertion into the Rh C(sp(2)) bond, ketone enolization, and reductive elimination to produce the 1-naphthol intermediate. The second-step annulation involves the O-H cleavage, sp(2) C-H bond cleavage, alkyne insertion into the Rh-C(sp(2)) bond, and C-O reductive elimination to generate the final product naphtho[1,8-bc]-pyran. The sp(3) C-H bond cleavage rather than the sp(2) C-H bond cleavage is found to be the rate-determining step of the catalytic cycle. The ketone enolization should occur before the reductive elimination. The substituent effects on the reactivities and regioselectivities of reactions are also analyzed. These calculation results shed light on some ambiguous suggestions from experiments.

Abstract:A new, one-step rhodium(III)-catalyzed annulation of 4-arylbut-3-yn-1-amines with internal alkynes through C-H functionalization is reported. Abstract:Rh(III)-catalyzed switchable annulation of 2,2'-bipyridine N-oxides with internal alkynes via dual C-H bond activation has been developed. Tuning the reaction conditions enabled the reaction pathway to be switched between rollover and nonrollover annulation, delivering 5,6-disubstituted-1,10-phenanthrolines and 5,6,7,8-tetrasubstituted-1-(pyridin-2-yl)isoquinoline 2-oxides in high yields, respectively. The procedures feature excellent regioselectivity, broad substrate scope, and high tolerance of functional groups. The synthetic utilities of these obtained products were demonstrated in the catalytic reactions.
