Abstract:Yb/Er doped hexagonal beta-NaLnF(4) (Ln = Gd, Y, Lu) are regarded as the most efficient green upconversion (UC) materials. Unfortunately, beta-NaLnF(4) is quite difficult to grow as monocrystal owing to cubic-to-hexagonal phase transition during cooling. As an alternative, herein a nanocrystallization controllable strategy to synthesize monodisperse whole-family beta-NaLnF(4) (from NaLaF4 to NaLuF4) embedded bulky glass ceramics is reported. A series of structural and spectroscopic characterizations indicate that Na content and Al/Si ratio are the most important factors to determine phase-selective NaLnF(4) crystallization in the aluminosilicate oxyfluoride glasses. Impressively, such nanocomposites are evidenced to be ideal hosts for upconversion luminescence of Yb3+/Er3+ dopants and as the proof-of-concept experiments, their applications in a random laser and incoherent LED-excitable upconverting device as emitting media are demonstrated. It is expected that this study will provide a deep understanding for controllable crystallization in glass and extend the practical applications of glass ceramics in optoelectronic fields.
Chemical Combustion Synthesis and Up-Conversion Properties of Er3+ Doped Yb3Al5O12 Powder

Abstract:Er3+ doped Yb3Al5O12 powder has been prepared by chemical combustion and their structural and optical properties are determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and up-conversion (UC) spectra. XRD and TEM show that the powder is composed of a highly crystalline garnet phase. When excited by a 980nm laser diode, the Er3+ doped Yb3Al5O12 powder shows an intense red UC fluorescent band that can be assigned to the transition 4F9/2→4I15/2 of Er3+ and a relatively weak green one corresponding to 2H11/2/4S3/2→4I15/2 in the UC spectra. The intensity ratio of the red to green emission is enhanced due to Li+ incorporation. This can be attributed to the modification of local crystal fields around the rare-earth ions. Our results suggest that rare-earth doped alumina nanomaterials have potential applications in flat-panel displays and multicolor fluorescent labels.
[The Different Phase, Morphology Controllable Synthesis and Luminescent Properties Investigation of NaYF⁴: Yb, Er]

Abstract:Using sodium fluoride and rare earth nitrate as raw materials and sodium citrate as surfactant, micron grade NaYF4 upconversion luminescent materials were prepared by hydrothermal method. By X-ray diffraction(XRD), scanning electron microscope(SEM) and fluorescence spectrometer, the crystal phase, morphology and luminescent characteristics of the prepared samples were investigated. The results showed that the phase of the samples could generate a transition from cubic phase to hexagonal phase by adjusting the proportion (5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11) of NaF/RE , and the X ray diffraction peaks for the cubic and hexagonal phase of samples exactly matched with those of the standard card of PDF# 77-2042 and PDF# 16-0334, respectively. The SEM photographs showed that the crystallinity of samples was high and the dispersibility was favourable, the morphology were translated from microrods to hexagonal microplates. The samples upconversion luminescent spectra showed the intensity enhancement of red and green light emission peaks with increasement of the ratio of NaF/RE3+. The green emission peaks of samples at 520 and 539 nm corresponded to the ²H¹¹/²-⁴-->I₁₅/₂ and ⁴S₃/₂-->⁴I₁₅/₂ level transition of Er³⁺ ion, and the red light emission peaks of samples at 653 nm corresponded to the ⁴F₉/₂-->⁴I₁₅/₂ levelt ransition of Er+ ion. The chromaticity coordinate diagram exhibited that the change of the luminescent color of samples could be achieved by adjusting the ratio of NaF/RE³⁺. With the increasing of NaF/RE³⁺ ratio, for the whole light-emitting colors of samples, the shift from yellow region to near red region could be realized. It can be concluded that through the relatively simple experimental procedure and lower cost materials, the change of phase and morphology, the moving of light-emitting color for sample NaYF4:Yb³⁺, Er³⁺ could be well controlled only by changing the single component (NaF) molar ratio in the raw materials. The effect of phase and morphology of fluorescent materials on their upconversion luminescence has great potential applications in photonic devices and bioanalysis research.

Abstract:Hexagonal phase beta-NaYE4:Yb3+/Er3+ thin films composed of hexagonal prism structures were made by an anode electrodeposition from aqueous solution and low temperature annealing. The in-situ electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance and cyclic voltammetry methods were applied to studied the mechanism of electrodeposition of NaYF4 films. The hexagonal phase NaYE4:Yb3+/Er3+ films exhibited much higher intense green and red emissions excited by 980 nm laser than its cubic phase counterpart and two-photon upconversion mechanism was involved. Abstract:Green upconversion emission from hexagonal-phase NaYF4:Yb, Er3+ phosphors can be directly observed with the naked eye. Powders with controlled size and morphology can be synthesized in ethanol and show a minimal decrease in luminescence intensity after 24 It (see Figure). The intense upconversion emission suggests good crystallinity of the materials, which may be used in biological labeling.

Abstract:As a matrix material, NaYbF4 has attracted more and more attention due to its large absorption cross section and high energy transfer efficiency. In this study, lanthanide doped NaYbF4 upconversion (UC) nano-/micro-crystalline was carefully synthesized by hydrothermal method. The influence of kinds of external conditions, including reaction time, initial reaction solution pH value, organic solvents codoping, and Na+ concentration on crystalline phase, size, morphology and especially luminescent property are systematically studied and the possible formation mechanism based on PH values is emphatically proposed. The products of NaYbF4 with various morphologies range from nanospheres, microprisms, microdisks, hexagonal crown-capped shapes, hexagonal clam-like shapes and hexagonal flower-like shapes were successfully prepared. The results show that the up-conversion luminescence property is positively correlated with the slenderness ratio. Solvents codoping and Na+ concentration can greatly improve the luminescence property, especially for red emission. Impressively, the emission colors and intensities might be finely tuned through finely tuning the PH values, solvents co-doping and Na+ dosage. Furthermore, this study will be expected to contribute to the synthesis of various morphologies and improving the UC intensity of lanthanide doped crystals.

Abstract:Upconversion nanocrystals with uniform size and hydrophilic surface have potential applications in biological medical engineering. In this study, hydrophilic NaYF₄:Yb, Er nanospheres were synthesized via hexadecylpyridinium chloride (CPC) mediated hydrothermal process. The synthesized NaYF₄:Yb, Er upconversion nanospheres (UCNSs) were characterized by various characterization methods. Results showed that the synthesized UCNSs exhibited a uniform sphere-like structure with average diameter of ~250 nm. The surface of UCNSs was captured by CPC molecule indicating hydrophilic properties of UCNSs. The spherical UCNSs composed of mixed phase (α+β) NaYF₄ nanocrystals. This is the novel study for synthesis of NaYF₄:Ln3+ crystal employing CPC as ligand. Moreover, the effect of CPC concentration on synthesis of UCNSs was investigated by comparatively studying morphology, crystal phase and luminescent properties of desired sample prepared under different experimental conditions. It was found that high concentrations of CPC ligands were more favorable for forming NaYF₄ crystal nanospheres with morphology that is more regular, have smoother surface, with higher crystallinity and better upconversion fluorescent properties. The possible growing mechanism was proposed and growing of NaYF₄:Yb, Er nanospheres followed the classical Ostwald ripening process.

Abstract:NaYbF4 upconverting nanoparticles have enhanced optical properties compared to the NaYF4. Controllable phase transformation from cubic to hexagonal of NaYbF4 is achieved by increasing molar ratio of [Na+]/[Yb3+]. The Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation reveals that the phase transformation is trigged by lattice strain due to accumulation of cation atoms dislocation. These results provide new insights into growth of upconverting nanoparticles. NaYbF4 upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) have enhanced optical properties compared to the NaYF4 UCNPs. However, synthesis of monodisperse NaYbF4 with controllable size and optical properties poses challenges, and the mechanism of phase transformation remains to be understood. Here, they report on the effect of Na+/Yb3+ molar ratio on the morphological and optical properties of upconverting NaYbF4: 2% Er3+ nanoparticles. Controllable transformation of cubic phase nanoparticles produced with [Na+]/[Yb3+] = 1 to hexagonal phase is achieved by increasing Na+ content. The hexagonal UCNPs produced with [Na+]/[Yb3+] = 4 have significantly enhanced intensity of optical emission of ≈600 times compared with the pure cubic phase crystal. The work reveals that the increasing dislocation of sodium and ytterbium distribution cause the accumulation of the lattice strain with increasing Na+ content, and triggers the lattice strain‐mediated phase transformation in cubic cell, as confirmed by the Density Function Theory simulations. These results provide new insights into the growth of UCNPs and pave the way for developing controlled synthesis of UCNPs for applications as bio‐probes and for energy harvesting.

Abstract:Hexagonal phase NaYF4:Yb3+,Er3+ nanoclusters were prepared using a facile solvothermal method. The structures and morphologies of the products were investigated using an X-ray powder diffractometer and a transmission electron microscope. Modified by the capping agent of poly(acrylic acid), the as-prepared NaYF4 NCs show excellent water solubility. Under 980-nm excitation, the aqueous solution of the sample displayed a bright green upconversion (UC) fluorescence. The luminescence dynamics were further studied based on the UC excitation pathways and the emission processes. Such water soluble UC samples may find application in the field of biological imaging.

Abstract:NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals with different structures and sizes have been synthesized via a hydrothermal method. Structures and sizes of the NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals are carefully investigated by changing the Gd3+ ion concentrations and reaction temperatures. It is found that the change of Gd3+ doping concentration and reaction temperature not only induces the phase transition but also causes the size difference. The introduction of Gd3+ ions can promote the phase change from cubic to hexagonal structures, which exhibit the different morphologies (nanoparticle vs nanorods). However, by increasing the reaction temperature slightly, the hexagonal structures can be formed with very low or even without any Gd3+ ions. It is shown that the enhanced up-conversion emission can be achieved by well controlling the Gd3+ ion concentrations at the certain reaction temperature to get the pure nanorods structures with suitable sizes.

Abstract:Monodispersed CaF2:Yb3+/Er3+ nanocrystals have been prepared via a facile wet chemical technology. The upconversion luminescence properties of CaF2:Yb3+/Er3+ nanocrystals were compared with those of NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ nanocrystals with different phases and particle sizes. The results indicated that CaF2 is a promising host material for producing desirable upconversion luminescence.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline Ln3+‐doped YF3 phosphors have been synthesized via a facile sonochemistry‐assisted hydrothermal route. YF3 nanoparticles are demonstrated to be a good host material for different lanthanides. Varying the dopants leads to different optical properties. In particular, the feasibility of inducing red, green, and especially blue emission in the Yb3+/Er3+ co‐doped YF3 sample by up‐conversion excitation in the near‐infrared region is demonstrated. Such unusually strong 411 nm blue up‐conversion emission has seldom been reported in other Yb3+/Er3+‐doped systems. The up‐conversion mechanisms have been analyzed.

Abstract:The morphology, size and phase control of luminescent fluoride nanocrystals through doping has become a new research hotspot due to their improved properties. In this work, Yb(3+) ions, as one of the most efficient sensitizers for various lanthanide activators, were doped in NaGd(Y)F(4) nanocrystals. The results show that no obvious influence was observed for Yb(3+)-doped NaYF(4) nanocrystals, while the influence of Yb(3+) doping on NaGdF(4) nanocrystals was remarkable. The NaGd(1-x)Yb(x)F(4) nanocrystals were synthesized by a hydrothermal route and had a morphology of rice-like nanorods. By controlling the synthesis parameters, the average size and slenderness of the nanocrystals increased gradually with addition of Yb(3+) ions. In contrast, the NaGd(1-x)Yb(x)F(4) nanocrystals maintained a hexagonal phase, which is more beneficial for application as a luminescent host, until the content of Yb(3+) ions reached x = 0.9. The growth and transformation mechanism of NaGd(1-x)Yb(x)F(4) nanocrystals was proposed to be a result of the competition between ion diffusion and an Oswald ripening process. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra confirm the efficient up-conversion and near-infrared (NIR) two-model luminescence properties of Er(3+) (Tm(3+)) activated NaGd(Y)(1-x)Yb(x)F(4) nanocrystals. Simulated analysis results indicate that a colloidal solution of mixed luminescent nanocrystals is expected to find application as the activated medium of three dimensional displays and a broadband optical amplifier.
Controlled Synthesis of Monodisperse Hexagonal NaYF₄:Yb/Er Nanocrystals with Ultrasmall Size and Enhanced Upconversion Luminescence

Abstract:The ability to synthesize upconversion nanocrystals (UCNCs) with tailored upconversion luminescence and controlled size is of great importance for biophotonic applications. However, until now, limited success has been met to prepare bright, ultrasmall, and monodispersed β-NaYF₄:Yb3+/Er3+ UCNCs. In this work, we report on a synthetic method to produce monodisperse hexagonal NaYF₄:Yb3+/Er3+ nanocrystals of ultrasmall size (5.4 nm) through a precise control of the reaction temperature and the ratio of Na⁺/Ln3+/F-. We determined the optimum activator concentration of Er3+ to be 6.5 mol % for these UCNCs, yielding about a 5-fold higher upconversion luminescence (UCL) intensity than the commonly used formula of NaYF₄:30% Yb3+/2% Er3+. Moreover, a thin epitaxial shell (thickness, 1.9 nm) of NaLnF₄ (Ln = Y, Gd, Lu) was grown onto these ultrasmall NaYF₄:Yb3+/Er3+ NCs, enhancing its UCL by about 85-, 70- and 50-fold, respectively. The achieved sub-10-nm core and core-shell hexagonal NaYF₄:Yb3+/Er3+ UCNCs with enhanced UCL have strong potential applications in bioapplications such as bioimaging and biosensing.

Abstract:The Yb and Er co-doped yttria nanocrystalline upconversion phosphor were prepared by complex precipitation method in the presence of EDTA.The nano-crystallites were characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD),transmission electron microscope(TEM),photoluminescence(PL) spectra and infrared absorption(IR) spectra.The results indicated that the particles calcined at 980℃ show single cubic phase and spheric morphology.The diameter of the particle is around 30 nm according to TEM.PL and IR absorption spectra revealed that the carbon dioxide and water in the air could be absorbed on the surface atoms of nanoparticles due to the surface effect,which would remarkably enhance the nonradiative relaxation rates of ~4S_(3/2)→~4F_(9/2) and make the red light of the sample have a high fluorescence branching ratio compared with that of the corresponding bulk material.In addition,the up-conversion luminescence characteristic was also discussed in detail in the paper.

Abstract:Synthesis process and luminescence properties of trivalent lanthanide ions (Ln3+) doped YF3 nanoparticles have been investigated. To synthesis Ln3+-doped YF3 nanoparticles, the mixture of (YCl3·nH2O + LnCl3·nH2O), and NH4F was hydrothermal treated at 180 °C in a Teflon-liner auto-clave or heated at higher temperatures (400 °C ∼ 600 °C) in a stove. The XRD patterns showed that the Ln3+-doped orthorhombic YF3 nanoparticles with no second phase have been prepared. The solid solution Y1−xEuxF3 (x = 0 ∼ 0.4) nanoparticles have been synthesized. The luminescence concentration quenching resulted from resonance energy transfer between neighboring Eu3+ ions occurred at higher Eu3+ concentrations (30 mol%). The upconversion luminescence of Er3+−Yb3+ codoped YF3 nanoparticles under 980 nm excitation has also been observed. With increase of heated temperature, the size of the Er3+−Yb3+ codoped YF3 nanoparticles increased gradually, and upconversion luminescence intensity increased significantly.

Abstract:Yb3+ and Er3+ ions co-doped α-NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+ nanocrystals were successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method using citric acid (CA) as chelating ligand and NaNO3 as mineralizer. The influences of the CA/RE (RE = Y+Yb+ Er) molar ratio, reaction time, reaction temperature and the NaNO3/RE molar ratio on the crystal phases and shapes of as-prepared products have been well investigated. The possible formation mechanism has been discussed in detail and an aggregation growth theory has been proposed. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and photoluminescence (PL) spectra were used to characterize the products. Under 980 nm excitation, the emission intensities of the as-prepared nanocrystals were much stronger than that of the nanocrystals modified by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Additionally, the as-prepared products maintained spherical shape and high degree of monodispersion, which is expected to be suggestive for the preparation of other complex rare earth fluoride compounds.
