Abstract:Hexagonal phase (β-) NaYF4:Yb/Er upconversion (UC) microrods doped with Cu2+ ions were prepared via a facile solvothermal method. Simultaneous phase and shape control of NaYF4:Yb/Er crystals with enhanced upconversion luminescence (UCL) was successfully realized by codoping with Cu2+ ions. With an increasing Cu2+ ion concentration in the NaYF4:Yb/Er system, the crystal structure changed from a mixture of α- and β-phases to the pure β-phase and was converted into highly uniform microrods. As for the Cu2+ ion doped β-NaYF4:Yb/Er upconversion microrods, the maximum emission occurs with the sample added with 60 mol% Cu2+ ions and the UCL intensities of the green and red emissions were enhanced 37 and 25 times, respectively. Meanwhile, the possible mechanisms for the enhanced UCL of NaYF4:Yb/Er crystals were also discussed in detail. Moreover, the temperature dependent UCL properties of 60 mol% Cu2+ ion doped β-NaYF4:Yb/Er were studied under 980 nm excitation, which were temperature-sensitive over a wide temperature range from 123 K to 423 K. The change in UCL intensity influenced by temperature was discussed in detail.

Abstract:NaYF4 nanorods, and nanoparticles co-doping with Yb3+ and Er3+ were synthesized by hydrothermal method. The effects of doped ion concentration, the ratio of NaF to Ln (NO3)3 and the reactant content on the luminescence properties of the nanocrystals were investigated in detail in this paper. The materials were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. The results indicate that a doping level of 20mol% Yb3+ and 2mol% Er 3+ gives the strongest luminescence, and concentration quenching occurs, when Er3+ concentration exceeds 5mol%. Besides, the reaction of temperature and time were also investigated and the results showed that they have an effect on the shape, size, and crystal phase purity of the nanoparticles. The luminescence mechanism for the NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+ was discussed. Under 980nm excitation, the Er3+ ions doped into NaYF4 samples emitted green fluorescence 520nm (4H11/2→4H15/2), 550nm (4S3/2→4H15/2) and red fluorescence 650nm(4F9/2→4I15/2), which were modified and enhanced by Yb3+ ions.

Abstract:Red upconversion luminescence (UCL) is selectively enhanced by about 7 times via Fe(3+) codoping into a NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocrystalline lattice. The maximum red-to-green ratio (R/G) as well as the overall integrated UCL intensity features at an Fe(3+) content of 20 mol%. The size and phase of nanocrystals are simultaneously manipulated via Fe(3+) doping with various concentrations by a facile hydrothermal method. Contrary to the literature, the pure hexagonal phase appears when Fe(3+) concentrations are from 5 to 20 mol%, meanwhile, the size of NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals reaches its maximum at 10 mol%. The intensified visible UCL especially the dominant red emission is mainly ascribed to the energy transfer (ET) from |(2)F7/2, (4)T1g > (Yb(3+)-Fe(3+) dimer) to (4)F9/2 (Er(3+)) states as well as the distortion of the crystalline field symmetry upon Fe(3+) codoping. Dynamic investigation of (4)S3/2 and (4)F9/2 states under the pulsed laser excitation of 980 nm along with the diffuse reflectance data further supports the proposed mechanism of UC processes. The results show the remarkable promise of Fe(3+)-codoped NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals as upconverting nanoprobes with high sensitivity and penetrability in deeper tissue for multimodal biomedical imaging.

Abstract:Strong red upconversion luminescence of rare-earth ions doped in nanocrystals is desirable for the biological/biomedical applications. In this paper, we describe the great enhancement of red upconversion emission (4F9/2 → 4I15/2 transition of Er3+ ion) in NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+ nanocrystals at low doping level, which is ascribed to the effectiveness of the multiphonon relaxation process due to the existence of citrate as a chelator and cross relaxation between Er3+ ions. The dissolution−recrystallization transformation, governing both the intrinsic crystalline phase (cubic and/or hexagonal phase) and the growth regime (thermodynamic vs kinetic), is responsible for the phase control of the NaYF4 crystals. [The Different Phase, Morphology Controllable Synthesis and Luminescent Properties Investigation of NaYF⁴: Yb, Er]

Abstract:Using sodium fluoride and rare earth nitrate as raw materials and sodium citrate as surfactant, micron grade NaYF4 upconversion luminescent materials were prepared by hydrothermal method. By X-ray diffraction(XRD), scanning electron microscope(SEM) and fluorescence spectrometer, the crystal phase, morphology and luminescent characteristics of the prepared samples were investigated. The results showed that the phase of the samples could generate a transition from cubic phase to hexagonal phase by adjusting the proportion (5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11) of NaF/RE , and the X ray diffraction peaks for the cubic and hexagonal phase of samples exactly matched with those of the standard card of PDF# 77-2042 and PDF# 16-0334, respectively. The SEM photographs showed that the crystallinity of samples was high and the dispersibility was favourable, the morphology were translated from microrods to hexagonal microplates. The samples upconversion luminescent spectra showed the intensity enhancement of red and green light emission peaks with increasement of the ratio of NaF/RE3+. The green emission peaks of samples at 520 and 539 nm corresponded to the ²H¹¹/²-⁴-->I₁₅/₂ and ⁴S₃/₂-->⁴I₁₅/₂ level transition of Er³⁺ ion, and the red light emission peaks of samples at 653 nm corresponded to the ⁴F₉/₂-->⁴I₁₅/₂ levelt ransition of Er+ ion. The chromaticity coordinate diagram exhibited that the change of the luminescent color of samples could be achieved by adjusting the ratio of NaF/RE³⁺. With the increasing of NaF/RE³⁺ ratio, for the whole light-emitting colors of samples, the shift from yellow region to near red region could be realized. It can be concluded that through the relatively simple experimental procedure and lower cost materials, the change of phase and morphology, the moving of light-emitting color for sample NaYF4:Yb³⁺, Er³⁺ could be well controlled only by changing the single component (NaF) molar ratio in the raw materials. The effect of phase and morphology of fluorescent materials on their upconversion luminescence has great potential applications in photonic devices and bioanalysis research.

Abstract:Upconversion luminescent NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+/Tm3+ nanocrystals were successfully synthesized via a facile and one-pot solvothermal method using oleic acid/oleylamine (OA/OM) as surfactants. The effects of synthetic parameters including rare earth ion doping concentrations and temperatures on the crystal phase structure, size and shape of NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+/Tm3+ nanocrystals were systematically investigated. By modulating the synthetic parameters, the shape of NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+/Tm3+ nanocrystals were controlled in forms of nanorods and nanowires. The reaction temperature has large effects on the phase structure of NaYF4:Yb3+, Er+/Tm3+ nanorods, exhibiting a phase transformation from cubic phase (alpha-) in low temperatures to hexagonal phase (beta-) in high temperatures. Moreover, the upconversion luminescence of NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+/Tm3+ nanocrystals was found to be dependent on the rare earth ion doping concentrations and temperatures.

Abstract:As a matrix material, NaYbF4 has attracted more and more attention due to its large absorption cross section and high energy transfer efficiency. In this study, lanthanide doped NaYbF4 upconversion (UC) nano-/micro-crystalline was carefully synthesized by hydrothermal method. The influence of kinds of external conditions, including reaction time, initial reaction solution pH value, organic solvents codoping, and Na+ concentration on crystalline phase, size, morphology and especially luminescent property are systematically studied and the possible formation mechanism based on PH values is emphatically proposed. The products of NaYbF4 with various morphologies range from nanospheres, microprisms, microdisks, hexagonal crown-capped shapes, hexagonal clam-like shapes and hexagonal flower-like shapes were successfully prepared. The results show that the up-conversion luminescence property is positively correlated with the slenderness ratio. Solvents codoping and Na+ concentration can greatly improve the luminescence property, especially for red emission. Impressively, the emission colors and intensities might be finely tuned through finely tuning the PH values, solvents co-doping and Na+ dosage. Furthermore, this study will be expected to contribute to the synthesis of various morphologies and improving the UC intensity of lanthanide doped crystals.

Abstract:In this paper we present a novel report on the upconversion luminescence performance of NaY0.92Yb0.05Er0.03F4 enhanced by Zr4+ codoping. The luminescence intensity of the tridoped hexagonal NaYF4 synthesized by a hydrothermal method increased to the maximum, about seven times of the non-Zr4+ sample when the Zr4+ codoping concentration rose to 6mol%, while the luminescence lifetime was also prolonged by Zr4+ codoping. To explore the relationships between the microstructure and upconversion properties, X-ray powder diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscope, electron energy-dispersive spectroscopy and upconversion emission spectroscopy were employed. From these characterizations, we found that the codoping of Zr4+ could modulate the crystal microstructure of NaYF4 for higher upconversion luminescence intensity and longer lifetime. This study may be helpful for the design and synthesis of high-performance upconversion materials.

Abstract:Cubic nano-spherical and hexagonal microprismatic NaY F4: Yb, Er up-conversion (UC) phosphors have successfully been synthesized separately through a mild hydrothermal method. The morphology of the NaY F4: Yb, Er crystals can be controlled by adjusting the Ln3+/F− ratio in the reaction solution. The efficient UC luminescence can be detected under excitation at 980 nm. Red and green emissions originate from a two-photon mechanism. Factors affecting the phase and morphology of the samples, and their UC luminescence properties are investigated using microscopic and spectroscopic techniques.

Abstract:Bifunctional NaYF4 microcrystals doped with Yb3+/Er3+/La3+ have been successfully synthesized through a facile hydrothermal method, which have been characterized by XRD, SEM, photoluminescence spectra, and the photothermal effect measurement. Under the excitation of 980 nm infrared light, NaYF4: Yb3+/Er3+/La3+ microcrystals can emit green light of 520 nm and 540 nm, red light of 655 nm and violet light of 407 nm. It is observed that the photothermal efficiencies of NaYF4: Yb3+/Er3+ without La3+ ion doping are much lower than the one doped with La3+ ion. With increasing the concentration of the doped La3+ ions, the photothermal efficiencies of NaYF4: Yb3+/Er3+ are monotonously enhanced. Importantly, the time-resolved temperature curves indicated that the temperature rising rate of NaYF4: Yb3+/Er3+ microcrystals is remarkably enhanced by doping La3+ ion. The enhanced temperature rising rate with increasing the content of La3+ doping ion is beneficial to the photothermal effect applications, such as photothermal therapy since the therapy can be completed in the shorter time.

Abstract:NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals with different structures and sizes have been synthesized via a hydrothermal method. Structures and sizes of the NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals are carefully investigated by changing the Gd3+ ion concentrations and reaction temperatures. It is found that the change of Gd3+ doping concentration and reaction temperature not only induces the phase transition but also causes the size difference. The introduction of Gd3+ ions can promote the phase change from cubic to hexagonal structures, which exhibit the different morphologies (nanoparticle vs nanorods). However, by increasing the reaction temperature slightly, the hexagonal structures can be formed with very low or even without any Gd3+ ions. It is shown that the enhanced up-conversion emission can be achieved by well controlling the Gd3+ ion concentrations at the certain reaction temperature to get the pure nanorods structures with suitable sizes.

Abstract:Hexagonal NaYF4 crystals co-doped with different concentration of Yb3+ and Er3+ ions were synthesized via hydrothermal reaction route. The samples doped with 30mol% of Yb3+ and 1mol% of Er3+ showed the highest upconversion efficiencies under 980nm excitation. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses indicated that the samples were pure hexagonal phase. The morphology of the powder was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). With the excitation of a 980nm diode laser, strong green emissions were obtained at 522, 530, 542 and 551nm in addition to weak red emission at 654nm. The green and red emissions were attributed to the transitions of S-4(3/2), H-2(11/2) -> I-4(15/2) and F-4(9/2) -> I-4(15/2) Er3+ ion, respectively. The additions of Yb3+ ion as sensitizer can notably enhance the upconversion efficiencies from infra-red to visible. The upconversion mechanism of the emission for the samples was also discussed.

Abstract:Rod-shaped and plate-shaped NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ nanocrystals (NCs) have been synthesized via a facile oleic acid-assisted hydrothermal route. The intensity and color tunability by shape controlling of NCs is demonstrated by up and down frequency conversions in NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ NCs. The results obviously show that rod-shaped NCs present much stronger upconversion luminescence intensity and smaller ratio of green to red emission intensity than that of plate-shaped NCs. The underlying reason of luminescence enhancement by shape controlling is explored, and a mechanism of the enhancement based on the decrease of nonradiation relaxation probability and the increase of energy transfer efficiency from Yb3+ to Er3+ is proposed for nanorods.
Upconversion Flourescence Characteristics of Er3+/Yb3+codoped NaYF4 and LiYF4 Microcrystals

Abstract:Lanthanide-doped upconverting fluoride nano-and micro-materials have aroused much research interest due to their potential applications in phosphors, color displays, optical storages, solid-state lasers, solar cells and biomedical imaging. In order to synthesize Ln3+ doped crystals with favorable optical properties, such as high upconversion (UC) efficiency and controllable emission profile, the two major parameters that affect luminescence processes including host materials and lanthanide activator ions should be selected appropriately in the synthesis process. Majority of scientists deem that lanthanide doped fluoride nano-and micro-materials with low phonon energy are currently the efficient UC host materials. In this work, Yb3+ and Er3+ ions codoped NaYF4 and LiYF4 microcrystals are synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method with ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) as a chelator. The NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ and LiYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ microcrystals are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope(SEM), and the photo-luminescence spectra method. The influences of EDTA on the crystal phase, shape and upconversion luminescence are explored in detail. According to the results of XRD and SEM, the pure hexagonal phased NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ rod-like microcrystals each with smooth surface are all around 12 m in the length. While the pure tetragonal phased LiYF4: Yb3+/Er3+ microcrystals each with smooth surface are octahedral in shape, and their average size is around 12 m. Under near infrared (NIR) 980 nm excitation, the two dominant emission peaks of Er3+ ions at 544 nm and at 650 nm are observed in NaYF4 and LiYF4 microcrystals, which can be assigned to the transitions of (2H11/2/4S3/2)4I15/2 and 4F9/24I15/2, respectively. It is found that the upconversion luminescence intensity of NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ microcrystals is about two times that of LiYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ microcrystals under the same excitation conditions. The ratio of red-to-green emission of Er3+ ions in LiYF4 microcrystals is higher than that of the NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+microcrystals. The changes of the spectra in the different hosts could stem from two sources: one is that the nonradiation relaxation probability relative to phonon energy of matrix, the other is that the radiative transition probability relative to the site symmetry of the crystal field acting on the ion. The ratios between 5D07F1 and 5D07F2 transitions of Eu3+ ions in NaYF4:Yb3+/Eu3+ and LiYF4:Yb3+/Eu3+ microcrystals are employed to compare and elucidate the site symmetry of the crystal field for Ln3+ ions. Note that the ratio of 5D07F1 and 5D07F2 transitions in NaYF4:Yb3+/Eu3+ microcrystals is smaller than that of the LiYF4:Yb3+/Eu3+ microcrystals, which indicates a much higher radiative relaxation rate in NaYF4 microcrystals than in LiYF4 microcrystals. The organic ligands of EDTA on the surface of microparticles affect the properties of luminescence through changing the nonradiative relaxation rate, resulting in the different R/G ratios in NaYF4 and LiYF4 microcrystals. This result can be further supported by the comparison between NaYF4 and LiYF4 microcrystals without EDTA added in the preparation process. The micro-sized luminescence materials usually present stronger upconversion luminescence because of their higher degree of crystallinity and less surface quenching centers. Thus, the Er3+ codoped NaYF4 and LiYF4 microcrystals exhibit strong green upconversion emission, which has potential applications in full-color displays and microelectronic devices.

Abstract:The applications of the upconversion( UC) phosphors in solar cells are still constrained because of their relatively low luminescence efficiency. In this work,LiYF4∶Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped with different concentrations of Na+was prepared by a simple and green hydrothermal procedure. The co-doping of Na+was proposed to enhance UC luminescence of LiYF4∶Er3+/Yb3+ microcrystals. The influence of Na+on the crystal structure,morphology and luminescence of LiYF4∶Er3+/Yb3+ was investigated. The results indicate that the co-doping of Na+can tailor the local crystal field around Er3 +. Compared with LiYF4∶Er3+/Yb3+,the green and red emission intensities ofLiYF4∶Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped with 15% Na+are enhanced by about 4. 2 and 2. 9 times,respectively. The distortion of the local symmetry and the reduction of OH groups are confirmed to be the origin of the improvement.

Abstract:Trivalent lanthanide ion (Ln3+) doped UC materials can emit visible light under near-infrared (NIR) excitation due to anti-stokes shift and have received wide attention. In this paper, we presented a new strategy to synthesize the uniform and smooth microstructures (rodlike and tubular) based on hexagonal phase NaYF4 microcrystals. Moreover, we systematically discussed the method of enhancing the upconversion (UC) luminescence intensity via co-doping the ions with different valences (Li+ and Lu3+) in order to tailor the environment around lanthanide ions. The UC intensities in the two microstructures were significantly improved. The results suggested the great application potential of tubes and rods of β-NaYF4 microcrystals in anti-counterfeiting, laser media, photonic crystals, and waveguides.
Preparation of Upconversion Luminescent NaYF4 Co-Doped with Yb3+/Er3+ Via Hydrothermal Synthesis

Abstract:Hexagonal NaYF4 crystals co-doped with different concentration of Yb3+ and Er3+ ions were synthesized via hydrothermal reaction route. The samples doped with 30mol% of Yb3+ and 1mol% of Er3+ showed the highest upconversion efficiencies under 980nm excitation. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses indicated that the samples were pure hexagonal phase. The morphology of the powder was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). With the excitation of a 980nm diode laser, strong green emissions were obtained at 522, 530, 542 and 551nm in addition to weak red emission at 654nm. The green and red emissions were attributed to the transitions of 4S3/2, 2H11/2 → 4I15/2 and 4F9/2 → 4I15/2 of Er3+ ion, respectively. The additions of Yb3+ ion as sensitizer can notably enhance the upconversion efficiencies from infra-red to visible. The upconversion mechanism of the emission for the samples was also discussed.
