Abstract:Nanojoining (including nanowelding, nanosoldering, etc.) of metal nanomaterials offers the opportunity of constructing complex structures and advanced functional devices at the nanoscale. In comparison with nanowelding, nanosoldering does not involve the melting of base metal and shows considerable mechanical strength and good thermal and electrical conductivity. Here, an optically controlled local nanosoldering technique, which ensures the nanostructures to be bonded while their original structural integrity is retained, is proposed and demonstrated. Typical elemental devices (V-shaped, T-shaped, and X-shaped nanostructures) are formed with this nanosoldering technique. The conductivity of one V-shaped junction is enhanced by 500 times after nanosoldering. This facile nanosoldering technique provides an avenue to locally manipulate light, charge, heat, and mass transport at the nanoscale and is thereby expected to benefit the development of nanophotonics and nanoelectronics.

Abstract:An improvised and comparatively inexpensive method for welding semiconductors and metal nanowires (NWs) utilizing a plasmon‐enhanced photothermal effect is presented in this article. Different types of heterojunction‐based (single Schottky junction and back‐to‐back Schottky junctions) electronic nanodevices are fabricated by welding various combinations of silver and ZnO NWs on two gold electrodes using continuous wave laser (λ = 532 nm) shots. It is inferred from the current–voltage characteristic curves of these devices that the junction formed between the ZnO nanowire (NW) and the gold electrode demonstrates Schottky barrier‐like behavior, whereas the junctions between silver‐and‐gold and silver‐and‐ZnO behave like ohmic contacts. The maximum currents obtained for a single Schottky junction and back‐to‐back Schottky junctions corresponding to the applied bias voltage 40 V are 42 µA and 7 µA, respectively. This plasmon‐enhanced nanowelding technique extends the range of applications of nanowelding in fabrication of electronic nanodevices.
The Realization of ZnO Nanowires Interconnection through Femtosecond Laser Irradiation of Ag Nanoparticles Solder

Abstract:Nanowire interconnection is the basis for the construction and integration of micro-nano functional devices. But so far, it is still difficult to achieve a reliable interconnection of metal oxide nanowires. This letter proposes an approach for soldering ZnO nanowires through femtosecond laser irradiation of Ag nanoparticles solder. In this paper, the effect of femtosecond laser fluence and irradiation time on the morphology of Ag solders and the interconnection state of ZnO nanowires are studied, respectively. The I-V electrical characterization of nanowire interconnection before and after soldering is completed. The results demonstrate that ZnO nanowires achieve better interconnection. The UV light response of the ZnO-Ag-ZnO interconnection structure after soldering is investigated. The approach confirms the effectiveness of a femtosecond irradiated metal nanoparticles solder to achieve metal oxide interconnection, offering the prospect of more metal oxide nanowires interconnection and device development.

Abstract:Energy-efficient nanosoldering technology for realizing connections at the nanoscale is a long-sought-after goal for constructing advanced optoelectronic nanodevices. However, the ability to achieve noncontact handling, low power consumption, and targeted nanosoldering remains a challenge. In this work, we demonstrate a method of targeted photothermal-induced nanosoldering of silver nanowires, which uses Au80Sn20 alloy nanowires as the nanosolder and a 532 nm continuous wave laser as the heat source. The required power for fusing the Au80Sn20 solder is reduced by a factor of 55 compared to the previously demonstrated Ag self-nanosolder case. Construction of a few typical nanostructures (including "X"-, "Y"-, and "-"-shaped junctions) is achieved with this method. Besides its low power consumption, it also provides advantages including noncontact and targeted soldering, thereby introducing new avenues for fabricating complex nanostructures and advanced functional nanodevices.

Abstract:One dimensional ZnO nanostructures prepared by low temperature solution-phase methods have been investigated for a number of potential applications. In these applications, they take an important function as charge transport path in the devices. Thus, the electrical conductivity, carrier mobility and ZnO-substrate junction are crucial for device performance. One comment way for this purpose is to dope ZnO NWs in synthesis process. However, it is found that doping can be difficult in aqueous systems. It is because the dopant species can easily form aquo ions and not be incorporated into the crystal lattice. Although alternative methods such as post-thermal-annealing can be employed, such a high temperature process is not compatible for most of the devices fabrication procedure. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new techniques for this purpose. Here, the authors report the investigation of effects of pulsed-laser treatment on the conductivity and field emission of ZnO NWs.

Abstract:Nanowelding of nanomaterials opens up an emerging set of applications in transparent conductors, thin-film solar cells, nanocatalysis, cancer therapy, and nanoscale patterning. Single point nanowelding (SPNW) is highly demanded for building complex nanostructures. In this letter, the precise control of SPNW of silver nanowires is explored in depth, where the nanowelding is laser-induced through the plasmonic resonance enhanced photothermal effect. It is shown that the illumination position is a critical factor for the nanowelding process. As an example of performance enhancement, output at wire end can be increased by 65% after welding for a plasmonic nanocoupler. Thus, single point nanowelding technique shows great potentials for high-performance electronic and photonic devices based on nanowires, such as nanoelectronic circuits and plasmonic nanodevices.

Abstract:We report that 532 nm CW laser can be used to obtain non-wetting metal semiconductor (Au-ZnO) Schottky heterojunctions by plasmonic welding. Single crystal Au and n-type ZnO nanowires are placed on gold (Au) and titanium (Ti) electrodes, respectively, and the junction welding is realized. The current-voltage (I-V) characteristic curve of the single Schottky rectifier is also measured.

Abstract:The joining of semiconductor nanowires (NWs) is fundamental for the construction and assembly of high performance nanoelectronic devices, but the development of reliable methods of nanojoining and nanowelding of these components has been elusive to date. In this work, we report a methodology for laser welding of wide bandgap NWs based on two-photon absorption. Two photon excitation during femtosecond laser irradiation leads to the generation of excitons forming an electron-hole plasma. As an application of this technique, we show that two-photon excitation is effective in the nanowelding of two ZnO NWs. A nanoweld, resulting in the formation of an interconnected structure, occurs when the energy in the solid state plasma is deposited in the contact area between the two ZnO NWs. During excitation with ultrashort laser pulses, rapid melting and solidification result in the generation and freezing out of oxygen vacancies in the irradiated area and the region near the contact between the two components. This enhances exciton trapping and energy deposition at the contact, facilitating the formation of a bond between the two NWs. It is also found that the absorption of visible light is significantly increased in ZnO NW structures assembled via two-photon femtosecond laser processing. In addition, the junction between two ZnO NWs created in this way exhibits a photoresponse that is not present prior to nanojoining. These results indicate that two-photon excitation is a promising technique for the selective deposition of thermal energy in semiconductor NWs in the absence of plasmonic interactions.

Abstract:The conventional cold welding concept was extended to nanoscale, in which silver nanowires were welded together by large plastic deformation. A nanoindenter was employed as a cold welding tool to visualize and conduct welding. The MD simulation shows that unlike single crystal nanowire, sufficient plastic deformation is key to realize successful welding when the two nanoobjects have large orientation mismatching. The lattice orientation of joint interface is complex but no defects were found in both experimental and simulation.

Abstract:A novel method, nano-welding, analogous to spot welding at the nanoscale level using scanning probe microscopy (SPM) is presented. Using SPM oxidation of the underlying silicon, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been immobilized to the surface at point sites along their lengths by the nano-welding. It is shown that this nano-welding process nearly has no structural damage to the SWNTs. This immobilization makes the SPM manipulation of SWNTs controllable and desirable, which is helpful for the construction of SWNT-based nanodevices.

Abstract:Through a systematic analysis of the mechanism and influencing factors of the local energy enhancement regulation of Ag nanowires and their joints under laser induction, a self‐limiting joint of Ag nanowires with mechanical/electrical properties equivalent to those of the base material is obtained. The high‐efficiency and high‐precision welding technology of Ag nanowires is of great engineering significance for the integration of new‐generation micro‐ and nanodevices, and the mechanical behavior of its interconnect joints is also essential for their reliable application, especially for some flexible device. In this paper, based on the nano‐focusing and localized plasma enhancement properties of Ag nanowires under laser irradiation, Ag nanowire self‐limiting joints with mechanical and electrical properties comparable to those of the base material are obtained. At the same time, the local plasma enhancement characteristics of Ag nanowire joints are scanned and analyzed with nanoscale resolution by using cathodoluminescence technology, and the local multi‐physical field coupling regulation mechanism of Ag nanowire joints induced by different laser parameters is systematically investigated by combining theoretical simulations. Meanwhile, based on the in situ laser welding and nanomechanical tensile experiments, the mechanical properties of single Ag nanowires and their welded joints are systematically analyzed, and the characteristics of the interfacial atomic behaviors and the evolution process during the welding and tensile processes are investigated.

Abstract:Preparation, Properties, and Mechanisms of Resistance‐Welded Joints Enhanced with ZnO Nanowires. A high strength bonding interface by resistance welding has always been a goal for the production of highly reliable resin‐based composite joints. In this work, SS mesh element with grafted ZnO nanowires (SSM@ZnO) was developed for resistance welding of CF/PEEK composite laminates to improving interfacial strength. First, the surface of stainless‐steel mesh (SSM) was modified by in Situ grafting of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires via hydrothermal growth method and the as‐obtained product (SSM@ZnO) used to the resistance welding of carbon fiber/polyether ether ketone (CF/PEEK) orthogonal laminates. The dependance of the SSM@ZnO microstructure, heating properties, wettability and interfacial adhesion on the growth time was investigated. The electrical heating rate under constant input power is increased from 4.8°C/s to 7.12°C/s, and IFSS between SSM@ZnO and PEEK resin is increased from original 45 MPa to 61 MPa. The mechanical properties and failure mode of CF/PEEK resistance welding joints were characterized by single lap shear stress (SLSS) and SEM, respectively. At SSM@ZnO growth time of 8 h, the SLSS reaches the maximum value of 52.8 MPa, and the failure mode was shifted from interfacial peeling between CF/PEEK laminate and adhesion layer to fiber tearing of CF/PEEK laminate surface.

Abstract:Abstract Nanosoldering can bond various nanomaterials together or connect them with electrodes to form electrical contacts, thus assembling these nanomaterials into functional nanodevices; it is believed to be a promising interconnection technique due to its flexibility, controllability and crucial advantage of avoiding detrimental effects on the nano-objects. In this technique, molten solder as a filler material is introduced between the objects to be joined to form a reliable bond, in which the nanosolder reflow melting is a crucial prerequisite for successful nanosoldering. This work focuses on studying the melting characteristics of one-dimensional 97Sn3Cu nanosolder with low-cost, prominent electrical property and high mechanical reliability, aiming to promote its applications in nanosoldering. The reflow melting of an individual nanosolder has been dynamically observed by in-situ heating holder in transmission electron microscopy, where the obtained reflow temperature (530 °C) is much higher than its melting temperature (220.4 °C) because of the external oxide layer confinement. Furthermore, the size-dependent melting temperature of nanosolders with various diameters (20-300 nm) has been investigated by both differential scanning calorimetry and theoretical calculation, revealing that the melting temperature decreases as the diameter goes down, especially for the nanosolders in the sub-80 nm range, where the value decreases significantly. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions. These results pointed out here can be readily extended to other nanosolders.

Abstract:Metal nanowires have been gaining increasing attention as the most promising stretchable transparent electrodes for emerging field of stretchable optoelectronic devices. Nanowelding technology is a major challenge in the fabrication of metal nanowire networks because the optoelectronic performances of metal nanowire networks are mostly limited by the high junction resistance between nanowires. We demonstrate the spontaneous and selective welding of Ag nanowires (AgNWs) by Ag solders via an electrochemical Ostwald ripening process and high electrostatic potential at the junctions of AgNWs. The AgNWs were welded by depositing Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the conducting substrate and then exposing them to water at room temperature. The AgNPs were spontaneously dissolved in water to form Ag+ ions, which were then reduced to single-crystal Ag solders selectively at the junctions of the AgNWs. Hence, the welded AgNWs showed higher optoelectronic and stretchable performance compared to that of as-formed AgNWs. These results indicate that electrochemical Ostwald ripening-based welding can be used as a promising method for high-performance metal nanowire electrodes in various next-generation devices such as stretchable solar cells, stretchable displays, organic light-emitting diodes, and skin sensors.
Solvent Welding-Based Methods Gently and Effectively Enhance the Conductivity of a Silver Nanowire Network

Abstract:To enhance the conductivity of a silver nanowire (Ag NW) network, a facile solvent welding method was developed. Soaking a Ag NW network in ethylene glycol (EG) or alcohol for less than 15 min decreased the resistance about 70%. Further combined solvent processing via a plasmonic welding approach decreased the resistance about 85%. This was achieved by simply exposing the EG-soaked Ag NW network to a low-power blue light (60 mW/cm2). Research results suggest that poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) dissolution by solvent brings nanowires into closer contact, and this reduced gap distance between nanowires enhances the plasmonic welding effect, hence further decreasing resistance. Aside from this dual combination of methods, a triple combination with Joule heating welding induced by applying a current to the Ag NW network decreased the resistance about 96%. Although conductivity was significantly enhanced, our results showed that the melting at Ag NW junctions was relatively negligible, which indicates that the enhancement in conductivity could be attributed to the removal of PVP layers. Moreover, the approaches were quite gentle so any potential damage to Ag NWs or polymer substrates by overheating (e.g., excessive Joule heating) was avoided entirely, making the approaches suitable for application in devices using heat-sensitive materials.

Abstract:In nano-electronic field, cold welding is a simple novel method to join ultrathin noble metal nanowires (NWs) without introducing extra energy and defects. In previous works, it always occurred between ultrathin noble metal NWs, tensile fracture parts of a single NW, or a NW formation from nanoparticles. However, some external force is still needed to drive the materials as close to each other as possible before the process. Here, we proposed a new method to achieve cold welding without introducing artificial loadings. The bending fractured ultrathin gold (Au) NW can be self-healed assisted by cold welding during the removal of the tungsten (W) tip by in situ transmission electron microscope (TEM). A new interface with lattice mismatch formed in the welding zone after multiple periodic cycles, leaving an angle between the two rebonded fracture parts. Furthermore, the cold welding assisted self-healing of the bending fractured ultrathin Au NW and atom evolutions were also confirmed by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The successful implementation of cold welding makes the self-healing come true when the ultrathin Au NW fractures under the unexpected vibrations.
Substrateless Welding of Self-Assembled Silver Nanowires at Air/Water Interface

Abstract:Integrating connected silver nanowire networks with flexible polymers has appeared as a popular way to prepare flexible electronics. To reduce the contact resistance and enhance the connectivity between silver nanowires, various welding techniques have been developed. Herein, rather than welding on solid supporting substrates, which often requires complicated transferring operations and also may pose damage to heat-sensitive substrates, we report an alternative approach to prepare easily transferrable conductive networks through welding of self-assembled silver nanowires at the air/water interface using plasmonic heating. The intriguing welding behavior of partially aligned silver nanowires was analyzed with combined experimental observation and theoretical modeling. The underlying water not only physically supports the assembled silver nanowires but also buffers potential overheating during the welding process, thereby enabling effective welding within a broad range of illumination power density and illumination duration. The welded networks could be directly integrated with PDMS substrates to prepare high-performance stable flexible heaters that are stretchable, bendable, and can be easily patterned to explore selective heating applications.
