Abstract:The widespread use of World Wide Web and the diversity of Geographic Information Systems (GISs) have led to an increasing amount of research on integrating a variety of heterogeneous and autonomous GISs into a cooperative environment to construct a new generation of GISs featuring in open architecture, distributed computing capability, interoperability and extensibility. This paper presents the ongoing research project MADGIS, i.e., Mobile Agent based Distributed Geographic Information System, which aims at integrating distributed Web GIS applications by using mobile agent technologies. The architecture of MADGIS, especially, the structure of client site, server site and mobile agent in MADGIS are described. Key techniques for MADGIS implementation, which include mobile agent building and distributed query processing, are explored. A prototype is established to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach.

Abstract:The diversity of GISs and the wide-spread availability of WWW have led to an increasing amount of research on integrating a variety of heterogeneous and autonomous GISs in a cooperative environment to construct a new generation of GIS characterizing in open architecture, distributed computation, interoperability, and extensibility. Abstract:This paper proposes the architectural concept of Mobile Agent-based Distributed Geographic information System (MADGIS) for the first time to meet the requirements of GIS applications under Internet environment with limited communication bandwidth and unstable connectivity. First, the architecture of MADGIS is described, while detailed discussions focus on the structure of mobile agent facilitator and the operation process of MADGIS. Then the key techniques for MADGIS implementation are explored. And finally, an application prototype based on the MADGIS architecture is reported.

Abstract:The rapidly emerging of Mobile Internet and the constantly increasing of wireless subscribers' number bring new opportunities and challenges to geographic information sharing and accessing. Current Web GISs, which are accessed by using connection based approaches, are very inefficient in fulfilling the requirements of GIS applications under open, dynamic, heterogeneous and distributed computing environments such as (Mobile) Internet. In this paper, we propose a new system for accessing and sharing distributed geographic information by using mobile agent and GML technologies, in which mobile agents are used to overcome the limitations of traditional distributed computing paradigms in (mobile) Internet context and GML is adopted as the common format for spatial information wrapping and mediation, while SVG is used as a web‐map publishing format that can be processed and displayed in Web browser. A prototype is implemented, which demonstrates the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method.

Abstract:Recent developments of Mobile Internet and Wireless technologies bring new opportunities and challenges to GIS research and applications. In this paper we propose a new framework for accessing and integrating distributed geographical information by using mobile agent and GML technologies, in which mobile agents are used to overcome the limitations of traditional distributed computing paradigms in (mobile) Internet context, and GML is used to solve the heterogeneities of various GIS sources. A prototype is implemented, which validates the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed framework.

Abstract:Mobile agent technology is a new distributed computation paradigm. With its potential power, the technology aroused a great interest and experienced a rapid development in the last ten years. Various mobile agent systems were made for different targets and were implemented in different means. It is necessary to explore the current mobile agent systems and to summarize the implementation technologies for further research. In this paper a comprehensive explanation of mobile agent systems is given. First the definition and peculiarities of mobile agents and mobile agent systems are stated. Its advantages are enumerated. Then eight representative mobile agent systems are surveyed and the design issues about mobile agent programming language, mobility, communication, fault tolerance and security are discussed. Finally, the deficiencies and the trends of mobile agent technology are pointed out.

Abstract:As a recently developed paradigm in distributed computing,mobile agent can especially benefit (mobile) Internet applications on providing asynchronous task execution and more dynamics,supporting flexible and extensible cooperation,reducing communication bandwidth,enhancing real time abilities and higher degree of robustness,enabling off_line processing and disconnected operation.This paper presents an approach based on mobile agent to query distributed geographic information,which can overcome the drawbacks of the traditional connection_based access method.A prototype is implemented to access distributed geographic information transparently by using Aglets,which is a free mobile agent development platform developed by IBM.In our on_going research project,mobile agents are responsible for remote information retrieval.A user submits spatial or nonspatial query through a GUI interface built at the client machine,and the query is analyzed and decomposed at a server site.Then some mobile agents are created and dispatched to the respective sites to retrieve data autonomously and separately.Distributed GIS based on mobile agent is more adaptable to the open,heterogeneous,autonomous (mobile) Internet with limited bandwidth and unstable communication connectivity.

Abstract:On the basis of traditional multi-dimensional GIS techniques,new distributed Virtual GIS has been developed by combining virtual reality and distributed computation techniques.When distributed Virtual GIS propels the application of virtual reality and GIS,it also brings forward new problems.In this paper,agent technology is applied into the distributed Virtual GIS,especially discussing the principles,design and architecture of agent-based distributed virtual geographic information system from the aspect of intelligent computation and distributed processing.Then Aglets Software Development Kit from IBM is used to confirm the high working efficiency of agent-based distributed Virtual GIS by comparing with the traditional distributed systems.At last,this paper summarizes the promising application of agent in the distributed Virtual GIS,and makes a prospect for it.

Abstract:Agent technology is applied into constructing distributed GIS. A distributed GIS-oriented multi-agent system named as Geo-Agents is designed and implemented. Firstly, the classification, structure and features of agent in distributed GIS are analyzed. There are four types of GIS Agent: system management agent, GIS function agent, interface agent and GUServer. Every GIS Agent is a synthetic entity that consists of control subsystem, functional subsystem, communication subsystem, human-computer interface and data resource, and every GIS Agent is determinate, independent, autonomous, interactive and initiative. Secondly, a message mechanism is used to provide communication and coordination between GIS Agents, and a set of Geo-Agents message types are designed according to the properties of GIS and Agent. After that, the architecture and network distributed model of Geo-Agents are proposed. At last, two sample uses of Geo-Agents are explored: agent-based spatial information navigation and spatial decision-support system.

Abstract:A method of realizing geospatial data sharing in a distributed environment is puts forward. It introduces the application of Web Services and Multi-Agent technology in geospatial data sharing from the viewpoint of technological realization to meet the demand of geospatial data sharing. By analysis of theory and technology of current solutions of geospatial data sharing.. we put forward a Multi-Agent Geospatial Data Sharing Model (MAGDSM) based on Multi-Agent architecture and Web Service. Web Service can overcome problems of data transmission and platform heterogeneity existing in the distributed computing technologies. Multi-Agent can meet the demand to realize different utility of different users by different searching strategies considering of user's view. In this paper, the structure of MAGDSM is discussed and analyzed in detail. Additionally, a prototype system of Service-based Multi-Agent geospatial data sharing system in a distributed environment is presented.

Abstract:Existing WebGIS system in the field of marine sharing information has many disadvantages at present.A management method of marine remote sensing images data based on SDE is presented.Then the WebGIS system in marine remote sensing field for distributed heterogeneous databases is implemented.System framework,work flow and a few key problems are discussed.Finally,an application case is given and it is proved that the WebGIS system of marine remote sensing this paper presented can support distributed heterogeneous databases,make full use of the resource of server,support operations of multiple users simultaneously,have high security and is independent of the client platform.

Abstract:The ability with distributed computing is a main characteristic for new WebGIS platform. An organizing strategy of distributed WebGIS (DWebGIS) based on environment of server group and its implementation are presented. Then the distributed architecture of DWebGIS and engine of map services for COM+ were analyzed in detail. A distributed solution and process methods about DWebGIS are discussed, in which network load balancing (NLB) of server group, hidden marks of no-status objects, just-in-time (JIT) activation and object pooling are the key technique. Also, process of image based map-entities-objects in Client/Server, three factors (The alone filename are created by SessionID?server systematic time and random number), cycle of system request/response are expatiated on. Lastly, the correctness and feasibility for design of WebGIS system platform based on COM+ technique are proved by an example in Zhejiang Provincial Digital Drainage Area Planning System. Our further RD work is in progress.

Abstract:This study put forward a method to realize heterogeneous geospatial data sharing. To realize heterogeneous geospatial data sharing, two key issues in technology are to be solved. One is how to exchange the heterogeneous geospatial data. The other is how to integrate and share heterogeneous geospatial data in a distributed environment. geography markup language (GML) can solve problems that exist in current solutions of geospatial data sharing, such as information losing and difficulty of expanding to Internet. Web Services can overcome problems of data transmission and platform heterogeneity, which exists in distributed computing technologies. Therefore, the method that combines GML and Web Services technology can meet the demand to realize heterogeneous geospatial data sharing (HGDS). A prototype of service-oriented heterogeneous geospatial data sharing system (HGDSS) in a distributed environment is successfully developed under Mircosoft.NET environment. The system used GML as medium of data conversion. Data transformation, snapshot and metadata release services are provided, and process and visualization of massive data are also concerned in the system.

Abstract:Application of agent technology into distributed GIS is proposed, and a model of distributed GIS oriented multi-agent system is presented. It provides a new method to study and develop distributed GIS. Firstly, the architecture of the system is designed, and GIS agent is categorized as three types: Facilitator, GIS function agent and interface agent. The structure and features of GIS agent and the communication mechanism among GIS agents are also given. Secondly, a prototype of spatial multi-agent system is implemented based on DCOM and multi-thread technologies. The key techniques such as synchronization, agent scheduling, agent's forcible stop and spatial metadata, are explored and analyzed in detail.

Using advanced concepts and mobile Agent model has become a key solution to this problem. Above all,this paper presents the background of the research, and then presents the architecture of mobile Agent under the environment of mobile computing. At the same time, the definition,principle,application evaluation and the experiment result of this advanced architecture are discussed and analyzed in detail. Finally, the paper shows the effectiveness of this architecture to today's WWW system.
