Abstract:Agent technology is applied into constructing distributed GIS. A distributed GIS-oriented multi-agent system named as Geo-Agents is designed and implemented. Firstly, the classification, structure and features of agent in distributed GIS are analyzed. There are four types of GIS Agent: system management agent, GIS function agent, interface agent and GUServer. Every GIS Agent is a synthetic entity that consists of control subsystem, functional subsystem, communication subsystem, human-computer interface and data resource, and every GIS Agent is determinate, independent, autonomous, interactive and initiative. Secondly, a message mechanism is used to provide communication and coordination between GIS Agents, and a set of Geo-Agents message types are designed according to the properties of GIS and Agent. After that, the architecture and network distributed model of Geo-Agents are proposed. At last, two sample uses of Geo-Agents are explored: agent-based spatial information navigation and spatial decision-support system.

Abstract:Application of agent technology into distributed GIS is proposed, and a model of distributed GIS oriented multi-agent system is presented. It provides a new method to study and develop distributed GIS. Firstly, the architecture of the system is designed, and GIS agent is categorized as three types: Facilitator, GIS function agent and interface agent. The structure and features of GIS agent and the communication mechanism among GIS agents are also given. Secondly, a prototype of spatial multi-agent system is implemented based on DCOM and multi-thread technologies. The key techniques such as synchronization, agent scheduling, agent's forcible stop and spatial metadata, are explored and analyzed in detail.

Abstract:On the basis of traditional multi-dimensional GIS techniques,new distributed Virtual GIS has been developed by combining virtual reality and distributed computation techniques.When distributed Virtual GIS propels the application of virtual reality and GIS,it also brings forward new problems.In this paper,agent technology is applied into the distributed Virtual GIS,especially discussing the principles,design and architecture of agent-based distributed virtual geographic information system from the aspect of intelligent computation and distributed processing.Then Aglets Software Development Kit from IBM is used to confirm the high working efficiency of agent-based distributed Virtual GIS by comparing with the traditional distributed systems.At last,this paper summarizes the promising application of agent in the distributed Virtual GIS,and makes a prospect for it.

Abstract:Geo-Agents, a multi-agent system that processes distributed geospatial information and geospatial service was presented. Firstly, the requirement for distributed geographical information process was discussed, and the architecture of Geo-Agents was introduced. Abstract:The diversity of GISs and the wide-spread availability of WWW have led to an increasing amount of research on integrating a variety of heterogeneous and autonomous GISs in a cooperative environment to construct a new generation of GIS characterizing in open architecture, distributed computation, interoperability, and extensibility. Our on-going research project MADGIS (Mobile Agent based Distributed Geographic Information System) is reported, in which we propose the architecture of MADGIS to meet the requirements of integrating distributed GIS applications under Internet environment. We first describe the architecture of MADGIS, and detailed discussions focusing on the structure of client site, server site and mobile agent in MADGIS. Then we explore key techniques for MADGIS implementation.

Abstract:With the emergence of more sophisticated distributed computing environment and wide spread acceptance and available of Internet and World Wide Web (WWW) technologies, a new generation of Geographic Information System (GIS) emphasizing on open architecture, distributed computing capability, mobility, interoperability, extensibility and intelligence has been receiving more attention over the past decade. Distributed computing mode based on mobile agent is a revolutionary mode that can overcome the innate limitations of the C/S or B/S mode. This paper presents an architecture of distributed GIS based on Mobile Agent to meet the new requirements of GIS applications under Internet environment with limited communication bandwidth and unstable connectivity. It analyzes the related technologies of distributed computing based on Mobile Agent: its architecture, accomplishment of agents' move, and technological support for collaboration. And last it discusses GIS applications based on mobile agent on Internet. Our research on distributed GIS integrates several existing technologies, most of which are Java-based, and we also take Concordia as the platform to build our distributed GIS based on mobile agent. We have accomplished mobile agents' move and collaboration based on Concordia. And the combination of Message Queue System, Proxy and Persistence Manager makes Concordia systems secure and reliable.

Abstract:The collaboration and parallel mechanisms in a spatial multi-agent system Geo-Agents are explored and analysed in details. GIS agent in Geo-Agents are designed as four types: system manager - Facilitator, users or applications oriented agent - Interface Agent, spatial task undertaker - GIS Function Agent, and spatial database manager - GuServer. In Geo-Agents, Collaboration is embodied in two aspects: (1) collaboration among interface agents. Three types of collaboration among interface agents are discussed: direct cooperation, peer group cooperation and charge-tributary group cooperation. (2) collaboration under control of interface agent. Geo- Agents likes a kind of cluster parallel system, and parallel is performed by GIS function agents. Parallel of GIS function agents takes place in collaboration under control of interface agent, and exists as three modes: isomorphic cooperative parallel, heterogeneous cooperative parallel and exclusive parallel.

Abstract:The widespread use of World Wide Web and the diversity of Geographic Information Systems (GISs) have led to an increasing amount of research on integrating a variety of heterogeneous and autonomous GISs into a cooperative environment to construct a new generation of GISs featuring in open architecture, distributed computing capability, interoperability and extensibility. This paper presents the ongoing research project MADGIS, i.e., Mobile Agent based Distributed Geographic Information System, which aims at integrating distributed Web GIS applications by using mobile agent technologies. Abstract:A new methodology of mobile spatial information service is studied based on grid computing environment.Key technologies are presented in the methodology,including grid computing,Mobile Agent(MA)distributed computing,Global Positioning System(GPS),Code Division Multiple Access(CDMA),Transfer Control Protocol/Internet Protocol(TCP/IP),and User Datagram Protocol(UDP).In view of the narrow bandwidth and instability of the wireless internet,limited processing speed and low memory of mobile devices,a new mobile agent based mobile spatial information service grid model is further proposed that has good load balance,high processing efficiency,less network communication and thus suitable for mobile spatial information service.It can provide applications of spatial information grid computing and mobile service,real-time monitoring and scheduling of mobile objects.The theories and technologies architecture of mobile spatial information service grid are built originally from the base,including spatial information mobile agent model,distributed grid Geographic Information System(GIS)server model,mobile agent server model and mobile GIS client model.An application system for mobile spatial information service grid is therefore developed by authors using visual C++ and embedded visual C++.A field test is carried out through this system in Shanghai,and the results show that the proposed model and methods are feasible and adaptable for mobile spatial information service.

Abstract:Spatial information grid (SIG) is a spatial information infrastructure that has the capability of providing services on-demand. SIG is a distributed network environment, which links spatial data resources, computing resources, storage resources, software, tools and users. SIG can integrate massive distributed heterogeneous spatial information resources, provides uniform management and process; and, furthermore, coordinate different resources to complete large-scale and complex spatial tasks and applications. In this paper, agent technology is adopted to construct a SIG framework, which contains three layers: users/applications layer, agent services layer and information layer. Different applications can get their spatial information via agent services, and agent services make the procedure of navigating and accessing spatial information transparent to users. Also, the implementation issues of the framework are discussed in detail, including Geo-Agents; an agent-based distributed GIS system, spatial information management, collaboration and parallel mechanism, load control strategy, and a sample.

Abstract:Recent developments of Mobile Internet and Wireless technologies bring new opportunities and challenges to GIS research and applications. In this paper we propose a new framework for accessing and integrating distributed geographical information by using mobile agent and GML technologies, in which mobile agents are used to overcome the limitations of traditional distributed computing paradigms in (mobile) Internet context, and GML is used to solve the heterogeneities of various GIS sources. A prototype is implemented, which validates the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed framework.

Abstract:In this paper,the GIS basic technology system is described.According to the GIS application progress,the new generation GIS technology,which focuses on distributed and peer to peer computing,is presented.At first,this paper discusses the history of GIS technology progress and the basic technical characteristics of past generation GIS software.Based on it the trend of GIS application progress is analyzed and the basic technical characteristics of new generation GIS software are presented.From the points of spatial data model,spatial query language and spatial data distributed computing,the technical and theoretical system is discussed in detail and the feasible implement mechanisms and the new generation GIS prototype are presented.

Abstract:A method of realizing geospatial data sharing in a distributed environment is puts forward. It introduces the application of Web Services and Multi-Agent technology in geospatial data sharing from the viewpoint of technological realization to meet the demand of geospatial data sharing. By analysis of theory and technology of current solutions of geospatial data sharing.. we put forward a Multi-Agent Geospatial Data Sharing Model (MAGDSM) based on Multi-Agent architecture and Web Service. Web Service can overcome problems of data transmission and platform heterogeneity existing in the distributed computing technologies. Multi-Agent can meet the demand to realize different utility of different users by different searching strategies considering of user's view. In this paper, the structure of MAGDSM is discussed and analyzed in detail. Additionally, a prototype system of Service-based Multi-Agent geospatial data sharing system in a distributed environment is presented.

Abstract:GIS based on Internet as a promising research field brings new opportunities and challenges to geographic information accessing, sharing and disseminating. However, the inherent limitation of current Internet GIS architecture based on connection makes it incompetent to fulfill various requirements of GIS applications under dynamic, complicated and distributed computing environment such as the Mobile Internet. As a recently developed paradigm in distributed computing, mobile agent can especially benefit (Mobile) Internet applications on providing asynchronous task execution and more dynamics, supporting flexible and extensible cooperation, reducing communication bandwidth, enhancing real time abilities and higher degree of robustness, enabling off-line processing and disconnected operation. This paper presents a mobile agent based approach to query distributed geographic information, which can overcome the drawbacks of the traditional connection-based access method. A prototype was implemented to access distributed geographic information transparently by using Aglets, which is a free mobile agent development platform developed by IBM.
