Abstract:A theoretical scheme for describing the quasiparticle-pair superconductivity in doped CuO2 system is suggested based on the model put forward by Emery and Reiter. The doped O holes and associated two neighboring Cu-spins form spin-1/2 quasiparticles. Through the magnetic interaction with the spin background, the quasiparticles interact with each other and lead to pair condensation which is responsible for the superconductivity.

Abstract:The authors present a model to describe high-Tc superconductivity in doped planar CuO2 systems. Each doped hole on the oxygen site interacts through strong antiferromagnetic (AF) coupling with two neighbouring copper holes to form Cu-O spin singlet pairs and interacts with a Cu-RVB state to lead to the condensation of O holes in momentum space, which is responsible for the superconductivity. The ground state of this system and the spin correlation of Cu and O holes are also studied. The results are in good agreement with previous works.

Abstract:The elementary CuO2 plane sustaining cuprate high-temperature superconductivity occurs typically at the base of a periodic array of edge-sharing CuO5 pyramids. Virtual transitions of electrons between adjacent planar Cu and O atoms, occurring at a rate $t/{\hbar}$ and across the charge-transfer energy gap E, generate 'superexchange' spin-spin interactions of energy $J\approx4t^4/E^3$ in an antiferromagnetic correlated-insulator state. However, Hole doping the CuO2 plane converts this into a very high temperature superconducting state whose electron-pairing is exceptional. A leading proposal for the mechanism of this intense electron-pairing is that, while hole doping destroys magnetic order it preserves pair-forming superexchange interactions governed by the charge-transfer energy scale E. To explore this hypothesis directly at atomic-scale, we combine single-electron and electron-pair (Josephson) scanning tunneling microscopy to visualize the interplay of E and the electron-pair density nP in ${Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+x}}$. The responses of both E and nP to alterations in the distance {\delta} between planar Cu and apical O atoms are then determined. These data reveal the empirical crux of strongly correlated superconductivity in CuO2, the response of the electron-pair condensate to varying the charge transfer energy. Concurrence of predictions from strong-correlation theory for hole-doped charge-transfer insulators with these observations, indicates that charge-transfer superexchange is the electron-pairing mechanism of superconductive ${Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+x}}$.

Abstract:The oxidation state of Cu in HgBa2Can−1CunO2n + 2 + δ (n = 1−5) phases has been analyzed in terms of the bond valence sums. The totally mobile hole concentration (nH,t) of type-I CuO2 planes at the optimal level increases with the increasing number of CuO2 layers (n) per unit cell from 1 to 3, and the largest nH,t is observed to be 0.350 when n = 3, which just corresponds to the highest Tc in the Hg-based series. Thus the relationship between the maximum Tc for each member and the number n is similar to the correlation between the nH,t and the n.

Abstract:On the assumption that doping creates holes on the O rather than the Cu sites, a new model to describe the CuO2 planes in the high Tc superconductor is proposed. It is shown that the RVB state of the holes on Cu sites at half-filling will lead to an effective attraction of the holes on the O sites which is responsible for superconductivity. Specific heat and susceptibility are discussed briefly and are consistent with experimental results.

Abstract:Using an extension of the Gutzwiller approximation, we calculated the density of states, magnetic moment, and the antiferromagnetic ground-state energy of high-${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$ copper oxides. The Hubbard Hamiltonian used for the calculations includes hopping between oxygen atoms as well as Cu-O hopping. It is shown that hopping between oxygen atoms is particularly significant for the magnetic properties. The effect of doping, on-site hole repulsion, and charge-transfer energy on the local density of states, magnetic moment of Cu, and antiferromagnetic ground-state energy is studied in detail.

Abstract:Effective spin coupling between conduction electrons mediated by local Cu moments in the doped CuO2 plane may induce the instability of the normal states of conduction electrons and pairing at Cu sites, where the superexchange interaction between local moments influenced by hole doping has been found to be Ising-like in recent experiments. By a mean field approach, we show that spin pairing and strong pair-pair interaction in the doped antiferromagnetic ordered Ising-like CuO2 plane gives rise to high-temperature superfluid condensation and the exceptional features of quasi-particle excitation in cuprates such as spin gap, pseudogap, and thelinear temperature dependence of resistivity pab in the normal states.

Abstract:High-temperature copper oxide superconductors (cuprates) display unconventional physics when they are lightly doped whereas the standard theory of metals prevails in the opposite regime. For example, the thermoelectric power, that is the voltage that develops across a sample in response to a temperature gradient, changes sign abruptly near optimal doping in a wide class of cuprates, a stark departure from the standard theory of metals in which the thermopower vanishes only when one electron exists per site. We show that this effect arises from proximity to a state in which particle-hole symmetry is dynamically generated. The operative mechanism is dynamical spectral weight transfer from states that lie at least 2eV away from the chemical potential. We show that the sign change is reproduced quantitatively within the Hubbard model for moderate values of the on-site repulsion, $U$. For sufficiently large values of on-site repulsion, for example, $U=20t$, ($t$ the hopping matrix element), dynamical spectral weight transfer attenuates and our calculated results for the thermopower are in prefect agreement with exact atomic limit. The emergent particle-hole symmetry close to optimal doping points to pairing in the cuprates being driven by high-energy electronic states.

Abstract:The strongly correlated two-dimensional ${\mathrm{CuO}}_{2}$ layer is studied to identify the mechanism of possible pairing superconductivity. The correlative motions of O and Cu holes are treated by a reasonable mean-field theory, and we find that holes on oxygen sites couple strongly to Cu holes to form Cu-O spin singlet pairs, which in turn interact strongly with the Cu resonating-valence-bond state and lead to an effective attraction between O holes, which is responsible for superconductivity.

Abstract:The role of the anti-bonding state in the electron correlations in Copper Oxide HTSC is analyzed. Then the t-J Hamiltonian is used to establish the formation of the charge stripes in underdoped oxides. It is proposed that these stripes make up the boundaries between the two degenerate anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) states, and that they are a key factor in switching between these states. We also provide a theoretical expression for the charge driven AFM magnons that have been observed by Neutron scattering experiments. Finally, the double correlation theory is applied to the stripe phase of holes to result in the superconductive gap and in the "pseudogap".

Coexistence of superconductivity with partially filled stripes in the Hubbard model

Abstract:Combining the complementary capabilities of two of the most powerful modern computational methods, we find superconductivity in both the electron- and hole-doped regimes of the two-dimensional Hubbard model (with next nearest neighbor hopping). In the electron-doped regime, superconductivity is weaker and is accompanied by antiferromagnetic Néel correlations at low doping. The strong superconductivity on the hole-doped side coexists with stripe order, which persists into the overdoped region with weaker hole density modulation. These stripe orders, neither filled as in the pure Hubbard model (no next nearest neighbor hopping) nor half-filled as seen in previous state-of-the-art calculations, vary in fillings between 0.6 and 0.8. The resolution of the tiny energy scales separating competing orders requires exceedingly high accuracy combined with averaging and extrapolating with a wide range of system sizes and boundary conditions. These results validate the applicability of this iconic model for describing cuprate high-$T_c$ superconductivity.

Exploring High-Temperature Superconductivity in the Extended Hubbard Model with Antiferromagnetic Tendencies

Abstract:The enigma of unconventional superconductivity in doped cuprates presents a formidable challenge in the realm of condensed matter physics. Recent findings of strong near-neighbor attractions in one-dimensional cuprate chains suggest a new avenue for investigating cuprate superconductors. Consequently, we revisited the superconductivity in the extended Hubbard model at the mean-field level. Anticipating a prevalence of antiferromagnetic order due to strong local Coulomb repulsion, our calculations reveal the coexistence of superconducting and antiferromagnetic orders across a wide range of doping at sufficiently low temperatures. The mean-field results capture some key features of cuprate superconductors, including $d$-wave pairing symmetry, a dome-shaped dependence of $T_c$ on doping, and higher superconducting transition temperatures. Additionally, we observed a nearly proportional relationship between $T_c$ and the strength of the nearest-neighbor attraction, reminiscent of experimental findings at the FeSe/SrTiO3 interface. The mean-field results suggest that the extended Hubbard model could be the appropriate framework for investigating cuprate superconductivity and offer insights for more precise calculations within this model in future.

Effect of Hopping Between Oxygen Atoms on the Metal-Insulator Transition in CuO2 Planes of High-Tc Superconductors.

Abstract:Using the slave-boson technique developed by Kotliar and Ruckenstein, we studied the metal-insulator transition in the antiferromagnetic ground state of high-T(c) superconducting oxides. The Hubbard Hamiltonian used for the calculations includes hopping between oxygen atoms as well as Cu-O hopping. It is shown that hopping between oxygen atoms is particularly important for this metal-insulator transition. In the absence of this hopping, the transition to the insulating phase occurs already for infinitesimally small on-site Coulomb repulsion. Results for the phase diagram in the (U, DELTA) plane for three typical values of oxygen-oxygen hopping are given. Our results are compared with the ones obtained for the paramagnetic state. In agreement with experiment, we obtain a transition from an antiferromagnetic insulating state to a metallic state as function of doping.

Abstract:It is shown that the strong correlated two-dimensional CuO 2 layer could show O-pair superconductivity due to strong spin interaction between Cu and O holes. The ground state and the excitation state of the system at finite temperature are studied. We find that the superconductivity may be destroyed by the CuO singlet pairs exciting to finite momentum state. The critical temperature of superconductivity is calculated and the results are consistent with experiments.

Abstract:The magnetic and electronic properties of a two dimensional extended Hubbard model for the Cu-O planes in high T c oxides have been studied in the Hartree-Fock approximation. Its magnetic phase diagram is similar to that of single-band Hubbard model. The density of states and the charge distribution on Cu and O ions are presented. Doping affects the charge distribution on both Cu and O ions. The intersite Coulomb interaction has a strong influence on the properties of system.

Abstract:We deal with a model for high-temperature superconductivity which maintains that in cuprates electrons running in the copper oxide layers, found in lattice of these materials, form spin-singlet bonds with electrons running in the neighbouring layers. This model reutilizes the BCS scheme, but with the essential difference that the electron pairs are characterized by equal, rather than opposite, momenta as in Cooper pairs. In the present paper, we consider the electron pair formation and a peculiar canonical transformation analogous to the transformation once applied to the theory of pairing correlations in nuclear matter. It is shown that the quasi-particle energy spectrum remains that of the BCS theory, including the linear relationship between forbidden energy gap and critical temperature. The model is also applied to superconductivity of some copperless perovskites of mixed stoichiometry, whose features are of special worth in understanding the mechanism of the phenomenon. The possibility of enhancing critical temperature in cuprates by inserting monovalent ions into the lattice is considered.

Abstract:The pairing mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity in cuprates remains the biggest unresolved mystery in condensed matter physics. To solve the problem, one of the most effective approaches is to investigate directly the superconducting CuO2 layers. Here, by growing CuO2 monolayer films on Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ substrates, we identify two distinct and spatially separated energy gaps centered at the Fermi energy, a smaller U-like gap and a larger V-like gap on the films, and study their interactions with alien atoms by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. The newly discovered U-like gap exhibits strong phase coherence and is immune to scattering by K, Cs and Ag atoms, suggesting its nature as a nodeless superconducting gap in the CuO2 layers, whereas the V-like gap agrees with the well-known pseudogap state in the underdoped regime. Our results support an s-wave superconductivity in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ , which, we propose, originates from the modulation-doping resultant two-dimensional hole liquid confined in the CuO2 layers.

Abstract:Emergency of superconductivity at the instabilities of antiferromagnetism (AFM), spin/charge density waves has been widely recognized in unconventional superconductors. In copper-oxide superconductors, spin fluctuations play a predominant role in electron pairing with electron dopants yet composite orders veil the nature of superconductivity for hole-doped family. However, in electron-doped ones the ending point of AFM is still in controversy for different probes or its sensitivity to oxygen content. Here, by carefully tuning the oxygen content, a systematic study of Hall signal and magnetoresistivity up to 58 Tesla on optimally doped La2-xCexCuO4+-{\delta} (x = 0.10) thin films identifies two characteristic temperatures at 62.5+-7.5 K and 25+-5 K. The former is quite robust whereas the latter becomes flexible with increasing magnetic field, thereby linked to two- and three-dimensional AFM, evident from the multidimensional phase diagram as a function of oxygen as well as Ce dopants. Consequently, the observation of extended AFM phase in contrast to {\mu}SR probe corroborates an elevated critical doping in field, providing an unambiguous picture to understand the interactions between AFM and superconductivity.

Abstract:We study the superconducting pairing correlations in the ground state of the doped Hubbard model-in its original form without hopping beyond nearest neighbor or other perturbing parameters-in two dimensions at intermediate to strong coupling and near optimal doping. The nature of such correlations has been a central question ever since the discovery of cuprate high-temperature superconductors. Despite unprecedented effort and tremendous progress in understanding the properties of this fundamental model, a definitive answer to whether the ground state is superconducting in the parameter regime most relevant to cuprates has proved exceedingly difficult to establish. In this work, we employ two complementary, state-of-the-art, many-body computational methods-constrained-path (CP) auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC) and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) methods-deploying the most recent algorithmic advances in each. Systematic and detailed comparisons between the two methods are performed. The DMRG is extremely reliable on small width cylinders, where we use it to validate the AFQMC. The AFQMC is then used to study wide systems as well as fully periodic systems, to establish that we have reached the thermodynamic limit. The ground state is found to be nonsuperconducting in the moderate to strong coupling regime in the vicinity of optimal hole doping.
On the Doping Induced Gap States of High-Tc Oxides Due to Oxygen Disorder

Abstract:The photoemission and inverse photoemission spectra clearly show doping induced states inside the antiferromagnetic gap of high-Tc superconducting oxides. Experimental data indicate that these states have dominant oxygen character and result from the transfer of density of states from the lower and upper Hubbard bands. They also seem to be related to localized orbitals. It is important to determine the physical nature of these states and whether these states in the gap result solely from strong correlations or from a combination of strong correlation and oxygen disorder. We show in this paper that structural defects like excess oxygen and oxygen vacancies in the CuO2 plane will cause deep impurity states in the gap and which have approximately the observed characteristics. Furthermore, we find that copper disorder does not cause such states in the gap. Despite its simplicity these results are interesting with regard to clarifying the physical origin of these states.
