Abstract:Within a globalized world, the need for linguistic support is increasing every day. Linguistic information, and in particular multilingual textual information, plays a significant role for describing digital content: information describing pictures or video sequences, general information presented to the user graphically or via a text-to-speech processor, menus in interactive multimedia or TV, subtitles, dialogue prompts, or implicit data appearing on an image such as captions, or tags. It is obviously crucial to associate digital content to multilingual textual information in a non-intrusive way: the user must decide, whether or not, he wants to display the textual information related to the digital content he is dealing with in any particular language. In this paper we will present a general review on linguistic and multilingual issues related to virtual worlds and serious games. The expression “linguistic and multilingual issues” will consider not only any kind of linguistic support (such as syntactic and semantic analysis) based on textual information, but also any kind of multilingual and monolingual topics (such as localization or automatic translation), and their association to virtual worlds and serious games. We will focus on our ongoing research activities, particularly in the framework of sentiment analysis and emotion detection. Note that we will also dedicate special attention to standardization issues because they grant interoperability, stability, and durability. The review will essentially be based on our own experience but some interesting international research projects and applications will be also mentioned, in particular, research projects and applications related to sentiment analysis and emotion detection.

Abstract:This essay explores the rise of global anglophone as a methodological rubric, and the place of English in global literary studies. My exposition pivots around a set of interwoven claims. While contemporary globalization has led to increasing linguistic homogenization, the rise of global anglophone does not herald the end of postcolonialism nor is it a force bent on erasing the cultural and linguistic diversity of literatures of the world. Rather, its valence can be generatively explored in the context of recent debates about the provenance of comparative and world literatures, and the emergence of multilingual transregional literary enclaves that are smaller than the globe and larger than a nation. Wariness about the moral economy of the angloglobalism can often be in tension with contemporary processes of anglophone transculturation. Further, the rise of global anglophone is inseparable from current debates in translation studies and the emergence of English as a global vernacular and a target language. Lastly, the global dominance of English appears less threatening when visualized through a comparative historical lens that illuminates the role of other world languages. As scholarship on premodern and early modern cultures indicates, linguistic cosmopolitanism and vernacular expressivity have not typically existed as antinomian forces in literary history.

Abstract:Globalisation, for which language is a pivotal instrument, is defined by Giddens (1990) as the 'intensification of worldwide social relations which link distant localities' (64). Though it is a contested terrain, of globalisations – from above and from below (Torres 2009), there are both negative and positive effects on any society. The globalisation of higher education has elevated the international status of colonial languages, such as English, to the status of a global academic lingua franca, with universities today both collaborating and competing on a worldwide scale in the pursuit of knowledge production. In many international contexts, English has emerged as the language of choice for those undertaking and offering university education, and, subsequently, has become not only a valuable commodity in the global economy (O'Regan 2021), but also a language associated with reproducing certain epistemological stances and worldviews (Santos 2014).

Abstract:In this review article on race and language teaching, we highlight an urgent need for the international educational community to continue to develop a complex understanding of how language teaching and learners' lives are shaped by our global history of racist practices of colonial expansion, including settler colonialism and transatlantic slavery. We outline the genesis of research on race and language teaching and review literature that reflects a recent increase in scope and range of studies that problematize the workings of race and racism in language teaching and point to hopeful solutions for addressing effects of racial inequities. We conceptualize two key terms, 'race' and 'language,' then overview theories that appeared most significant in the research literature. We explore five interconnected themes that featured prominently throughout the existing literature on race and language teaching: standard language ideology and racial hegemony, the idealized and racialized native speaker, racial hierarchies of languages and language speakers, racialization and teacher identity, and race-centered approaches to pedagogies and educational practices. We offer a critical analysis of the current status of scholarship on race and language teaching, including gaps and necessary reframing, and conclude with implications for future directions and questions arising from the work.

Abstract:Whilst economic forces have been the primary drivers of globalization, socio-political changes as well as technical developments have contributed to shaping and speeding up the process. These included the political changes affecting Eastern Europe with the dismantling of the Soviet Union, the reunification of Germany, the strengthening and expansion of the European Union, to name some northern hemisphere examples. The rapid expansion and increasing sophistication of communication technologies and means of transportation further assisted the process of globalization by facilitating virtual and actual transnational movement. With the mass production of communication software, a much greater number of people can communicate cheaper, more often, faster and in more diverse ways with people around the globe. These developments are likely to impact also on the ways in which transnational movers, that is migrants, refugees and other sojourners, keep in touch with their home or former communities. Similarly long-distance travel has become within reach of many more people on a more frequent basis. This has impacted on migration and settlement patterns. For example, there is greater evidence of transnational movement and mobility by ‘migrating’ people who perhaps 20 years ago would have settled in a new environment with limited travel to and from their previous country.

Abstract:This book studies European ELF for particular and aims to record the hybridity of European ELF within a community of practice where “Europeanness” is expressed during the use of English. Linguistic materials on Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) press conference 2010 are studied, from which four linguistic levels are examined for illustrating the internal hybridity of European ELF. This is shaped by "Europeanness", or speakers' willingness to be part of Europe, by weakening their associations with national countries.
Towards critical translanguaging: a review of literature on English as a medium of instruction in South Asia’s school education

Abstract:English as a medium of instruction (EMI) has recently dominated language-in-education policies in South Asia while bilingual/multilingual practices have historically been the norm in primary and secondary education. Although the research on translanguaging is rapidly undertaken in English-only spaces in other world regions (e.g. North America), such studies are rare in South Asia. To this end, this conceptual article focuses on EMI research and policies in South Asia and discusses how the use of multiple languages or translanguaging is practiced in EMI classrooms, what kinds of scholarly judgments are given to such translingual practices, and what ideological limitations exist in translanguaging practices. We show that translanguaging practices are traditional norms in South Asian EMI classrooms but not necessarily a planned pedagogic approach. It is, rather, a spontaneous practice used as a ‘coping strategy’ of English language domination. We also discuss how seeing elite bilingualism (English plus a national dominant language) as translanguaging can be a liberal approach perpetuating unequal language hierarchies in education. Therefore, we argue that ‘critical translanguaging’ should resist nationalist and neoliberal ideologies that position languages and their users unequally, and instead protect the language, culture, and identity of those who have historically received marginalization.
A scoping review of research on languaging in second language education

Abstract:With the rapid development of studies on second language acquisition (SLA) and sociocultural theory, languaging has recently gained increasing attention. To assess the existing research on languaging and determine implications for future research, the present study aims to present a scoping review of research on languaging in second language (L2) education. Specifically, this study intends to explore the major subjects of languaging, the effects of languaging, the factors that may influence the effects of languaging, and the ways in which languaging is integrated into the L2 class. In total, 27 relevant peer-reviewed articles were selected for further analysis using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocol (PRISMA-P) for further analysis. The findings of this review show that a) languaging subjects are primarily pertinent to university learners; b) the facilitative effect of languaging on language learning has been verified, with written languaging being the most frequently practiced form of languaging task; c) learner language proficiency, learning style, and corrective feedback are the critical factors contributing to the effect of languaging; and d) three ways of integrating languaging into L2 classes are identified: experiment, pedagogical means, and a mixed mode of experiment and pedagogical techniques. Based on the findings of this review, a model of languaging integration was proposed in four steps: task assignment, languaging with prompts, a post-test, and reflection. This review suggests future avenues for researching and implementing languaging in L2 classes.

Abstract:We live in a multilingual world where English serves as the language of international communication. It permeates every sphere of life, from education to trade, from employment to scientific literature. However, parallel to English as the lingua franca of worldwide exchange, several other languages co-exist and overlap in our multilingual and multicultural society. The purpose of this essay is to discuss the central role of plurilingualism as a way to support multilingualism and linguistic diversity but also as a very important means to enhance cognitive abilities, including metalinguistic awareness. It also considers the prominent role of English as the shared language of worldwide interaction. The ultimate aim of this study is to encourage reflection on a new vision of language teaching, which fosters knowledge of languages as a primary source of social and individual benefits, and, at the same time, focuses on lingua franca English for effective communication in the global society.

Abstract:The rise of English as a global language has led scholars to call for a paradigm shift in the field of English language teaching (ELT) to match the new sociolinguistic landscape of the twenty-first century. In recent years a considerable amount of classroom-based research and language teacher education (LTE) research has emerged to investigate these proposals in practice. This paper outlines key proposals for change in language teaching from the related fields of World Englishes (WE), English as a lingua franca (ELF), English as an international language (EIL), and Global Englishes, and critically reviews the growing body of pedagogical research conducted within these domains. Adopting the methodology of a systematic review, 58 empirical articles published between 2010 and 2020 were shortlisted, of which 38 were given an in-depth critical review and contextualized within a wider body of literature. Synthesis of classroom research suggests a current lack of longitudinal designs, an underuse of direct measures to explore the effects of classroom interventions, and under-representation of contexts outside of university language classrooms. Synthesis of teacher education research suggests future studies need to adopt more robust methodological designs which measure the effects of Global Englishes content on teacher beliefs and pedagogical practices both before and throughout the programme, and after teachers return to the classroom.

Abstract:In the past 20 years, there is a shifting trend in the second language acquisition (SLA) field departing from the traditional “logical science” (Zuengler & Miller, 2006) to a context-oriented perspective for its robust power in exploring social factors beyond individual internal cognition in L2 processing research. While context-oriented researchers claim the formal linguistic-focused research decontextualizes L2 learning from its environment and thus is problematic to comprehensively explain the L2 acquisition process, some scholars taking formal linguistic perspectives resist such critique and contend that social conditions are neither sufficient nor “necessary for scientific discovery” (Zuengler & Miller, 2006, p. 15). Within this paper, I will interrogate what differentiates the cognitive paradigm from L2 socialization paradigm in terms of second language acquisition.
A study of language choices in the linguistic landscape of Macao’s heritage and gaming tourism

Abstract:Language choices in the economic field of late capitalist societies are shaped by a combination of local, national, and global forces as well as historical, political, and economic factors. This study conducts an analysis of language choices in the linguistic landscape of Macao’s heritage tourism (i.e. signposts of tourist attractions) and gaming tourism (i.e. casino promotional brochures). The findings show similarities and differences in the two sectors in terms of language choices and some tensions emerging behind such language choices in constructing Macao with different voices. Unlike previous studies which find the commodification of one national or ethnic language for profit, the case of Macao illustrates the commodification of multilingualism for profit. Despite the similarities and differences, language choices in both signposts and brochures feature reductive translingualism under the neoliberal ideology which values the instrumental function of language for profit-making purposes.

Abstract:As globalization continues to foster increased mobility of students across borders, the acculturation process becomes a crucial aspect of their educational journey. Language proficiency plays a pivotal role in facilitating academic success, effective communication, mental health, and social integration. This review synthesizes existing research to examine the various dimensions of language barriers faced by overseas students during their acculturation experience, including language proficiency, communication difficulties, and the psychological toll of navigating a foreign linguistic environment. Furthermore, the review discusses potential strategies and interventions to support these students in overcoming language barriers and enhancing their acculturation experience. By identifying key themes and trends in the literature, this review contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex interplay between language barriers and the acculturation process among overseas students.

Abstract:As a prevalent phenomenon in second language acquisition (SLA), crosslinguistic influence (CLI) has attracted ever-lasting attention, as reflected by the publication of several monographs (e.g., Cai, 2021; Jarvis & Pavlenko, 2008; Odlin, 1989; Ringbom, 2007), many edited volumes (e.g., Alonso, 2016; Gass & Selinker, 1983), and numerous research articles. In these books and papers, mounting evidence for CLI has been accumulated in various areas of languages. In particular, CLI may occur between first language (L1) and second language (L2) in lexicon, grammar, phonology, discourse, and pragmatics, with its effects being both positive and negative. Besides, it has been shown that the occurrence of CLI is constrained by a variety of factors, such as linguistic and psycholinguistic factors and those related to learning environment and language use (Jarvis & Pavlenko, 2008). CLI has been addressed from diverse theoretical perspectives including universal grammar, functional linguistics, and psycholinguistics (see Cai, 2021 for a review).

Abstract:This paper attempts to present a review and perspective of research in Second Language Acquisition (SLA). In the review, it surveys a range of SLA theories, moving from the work of the Contrastive Analysis to Krashen's, Input Hypothesis Model. Both the merits and demerits of the theories are discussed and their contributions to the SLA research are highlighted. In the perspective dimension, the paper introduces recent approaches relating SLA research to neighbouring disciplines, such as linguistics, first language acquisition research, cognitive science, etc., and it gives a considerable attention to the integration of SLA research with the research in theoretical linguistics and first language acquisition within the framework of Universal Grammar. The paper hails the shift of focus from description to explanation in the SLA research and considers it as a significant breakthrough.
