Abstract:This article analyzes research in second/foreign language teaching and learning conducted in Taiwan over the period 2004–2009. Representative articles published in local refereed journals and conference proceedings – not readily accessible outside Taiwan – are reviewed to reflect current trends in English teaching and learning. The main themes discussed include English-in-education policy and curriculum, research on English-skills development, and assessment. The analysis presented here highlights the fact that research in Taiwan not only follows international trends but also satisfies specific needs in local sociolinguistic contexts. Additionally, this paper sheds light on why the international readership of this locally conducted research remains very limited, and concludes by outlining the challenges that researchers face and the gradually shifting status of English in Taiwan in this increasingly globalized world.

Abstract:English education has been promoted widely in China and has driven scholarly attention to young Chinese learners of English. However, not much has been done to address language ideologies embedded in English education oriented towards young Chinese learners from a perspective informed by the research on the global spread of English as a lingua franca (ELF). To narrow the gap, we adopt an ELF perspective to investigate textbook representations and teacher perceptions of English in relation to culture and identity in Chinese primary education. The findings demonstrate a Standard English ideology and an essentialist approach to language. We thus argue for a reconsideration of ‘English’ in primary education in order to empower young generations of English learners in China. While English is an essential language for international engagement, it is necessary to reconsider the relationship between English and China and to review the ownership of English.

Abstract:Abstract With the wide spread of English in the global context, scholars increasingly call for the reshaping of English education towards teaching English as an international language. One oft-mentioned proposal is to increase students’ exposure to more English varieties, in particular the variety of English used in their country or region. Against this backdrop, this study investigated the attitudes of Chinese university students and teachers towards China English (CE), an emerging variety in China and the ideological underpinnings beneath their attitudinal responses. In the study, 33 English teachers and 31 students were asked to first evaluate the understandability and acceptability of CE features that are identified in literature and then provide reasons justifying their choices in a questionnaire survey. Results show that both teacher and student participants were reluctant to accept CE as a legitimate variety but their attitudes diverged as regards specific CE features. The in-depth exploration of their justifications revealed that native speaker English ideology, Chinglish stigma and the communicativeness of CE to the outside world were their major concerns in evaluating CE. Findings in this study have implications for educators who attempt to localize English language teaching.

Abstract:Abstract Building on the extensive ELF research that aims to reconceptualise English as a resource that can be appropriated and exploited without allegiance to its historically native speakers, this article explores the issue of English in China by examining New Chinglish that has been created and shared by a new generation of Chinese speakers of English in China and spread through the new media. This new form of English has distinctive Chinese characteristics and serves a variety of communicative, social and political purposes in response to the Post-Multilingualism challenges in China and beyond. I approach New Chinglish from a Translanguaging perspective, a theoretical perspective that is intended to raise fundamental questions about the validity of conventional views of language and communication and to contribute to the understanding of the Post-Multilingualism challenges that we face in the twenty-first century.
Teaching English as an international language in China: Investigating university teachers' and students' attitudes towards China English

Abstract:This study investigated the attitudes of Chinese university students and teachers towards China English (CE), an emerging variety in China and the ideological underpinnings beneath their attitudinal responses. In the study, 1589 university students and 193 English teachers were asked to evaluate the understandability and acceptability of some potential features of CE with a questionnaire survey. Among them, 31 students and 33 teachers were also invited to provide reasons for their survey answers. The study revealed that both the student and teacher participants were reluctant to accept CE as a pedagogical model but their attitudes diverge as specific CE features were involved. The in-depth exploration of their justifications identified that the widespread native speaker English ideology and Chinglish stigma were more important reasons leading to their negative evaluations of CE than concerns for the communicativeness of CE to the outside world. Findings of the study may have important implications for English education in contexts where local varieties of English are emerging.

Abstract:Abstract:English has been widely used for various purposes and the number of students studying abroad has mushroomed in recent years. This article focuses on the preparation an oversea sojourn for Chinese students to practice English as an international language for intercultural communication. The article also reviews some literature to explain the process of intercultural acculturation and explore how to maximize the culture learning. Finally, the implications suggest that students should prepare for the sojourn in advanced to identify the culture difference, simulation games could also help students to improve their intercultural awareness and facilitate them to be adapted in the new cultural environment.
International students’ perceptions of multilingual English-medium instruction classrooms: a case study in Taiwan

Abstract:Abstract Many English-medium instruction (EMI) classrooms in non-Anglophone countries adopt a multilingual stance, using English alongside the host country’s local language(s). However, the perceptions of such multilingual practices held by students remain under-researched. Given many Asian countries’ current drives to internationalize and diversify their student bodies, a clear understanding of international students’ perspectives on multilingual EMI classrooms is long overdue. Through semi-structured interviews with international students from developing countries and the theoretical lens of language ideologies, this study investigates their perceptions of multilingual EMI classrooms in Taiwan. Most expressed a belief that their multilingual EMI classrooms, saturated with non-standard varieties of English, were not a legitimate pathway to acquiring their desired linguistic capital, i.e., standard English. These findings differ sharply from those of previous research, which has painted international students as holding positive attitudes towards English as a lingua franca (ELF). Moreover, the participants resisted the English-Mandarin translanguaging practices in their classrooms. As such, the findings highlight the need to understand the language ideologies of international students in Asia. Further investigation of learner resistance to multilingual EMI practices should also be conducted, with the wider aim of helping advanced English-language learners from developing countries accept different English accents, and accommodate ELF communication.

Abstract:Due to the spread of the English language in various domains and the fact that English is used as a global language, researchers and educators have started to rethink the models and aims of English language teaching in different settings. From the World Englishes (WE) perspective, this study investigated the attitudes of Chinese university students toward the localized variety of “China English,” as well as the students’ identity construction and negotiation during their English language learning journey. Data were collected through a questionnaire completed by 190 respondents and interviews conducted with 20 participants. The findings revealed the students’ positive attitudes toward China English and non-conformity to English as a native language (ENL). This further reflected the communicative function of English and the students’ interest in forming a Chinese cultural identity. However, the students also showed self-contradictory attitudes toward China English, as most did not want to be clearly identified as Chinese when using English. The data revealed some important reasons for this attitudinal conflict, including the belief that ENL is the standard form of English, as well as the students’ desire to develop an identity as competent second language learners of English. The findings suggest the importance of increasing awareness of the global spread of English and reforming English curricula and assessment in contexts where local varieties of English are emerging.

Abstract:This article abbreviatedly introduced the main idea of the research done by Chan and Li, which explored how effective the oral remedial instruction with the consciousness-raising method is. The research was completed with several control groups through pre-test, post-test, and delayed post-test. Although the research confirmed that the consciousness-raising approach could benefit for second language learners to notice their morpho-syntactically well-defined errors, there exists some shortcomings which could be improved to enhance its objectiveness and comprehensiveness of it. Meanwhile, the former article was also compared with the research completed by Patri and Pennington, which explored various teaching methods through fundamental experiments, because they both utilized Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS) in their exploration of second language acquisition and made control experiments and made the comparison to find out whether their differences are significantly relevant. The combination of basic language teaching theory and research with the utilization of statistical analysis software, the representativeness of the research methods with experiments, and the integrity of the procedures of the experiment and research made these two articles worthy of further analysis, discussion, and comparison. This paper analyzed the research with critical review in terms of both its advantages and disadvantages, and the data got with SPSS were also evaluated.
Attitudes Towards Peer Review and Reaction to Peer Feedback in Chinese EFL Writing Classrooms

Abstract:Writing is a major skill that EFL students need to develop. And the realities of the school setting often cause a student to believe only writing for teachers to be writing that “counts” because teachers are often considered authority figures and the people who give grades (Earls, 1987). Thus, students may be more willing to revise their compositions according to teacher feedback. But for teachers to review each student’s paper throughout the drafting process is painfully time consuming. It is especially so with Chinese EFL teachers and learners (Qi, 2004; Wang, 2004). To ease the pain, some suggest that peer review is a good choice which can be applied to the foreign language classroom at any level (Byrd, 1994). Though numerous studies show that peer review is effective in improving student writing (Althauser & Darnall, 2001; Bean, 1996; Byrd, 1994; DiPardo & Freedman, 1988; Mendonca & Johnson, 1994), this issue has not been adequately researched in China. Situated in a Chinese university EFL writing class, the present study sought to examine students’ attitudes toward and reaction to peer review.

In daily learning, the differences between mother tongue and second language inevitably have an impact on students' writing. This paper aims to use contrastive analysis to explore the differences in lexical, syntactic, and discourse levels between English and Chinese writing, and proposes relevant teaching suggestions based on these, so as to improve students' English writing level and teachers' writing teaching level.
English-only Instruction in Post-secondary Education in Taiwan: Voices from Students

Abstract:The internationalization of higher education in Taiwan has become a trend since Taiwan entered the World Trade Organization (WTO). One of the most popular internationalizing mechanisms for Taiwan is to provide English-taught courses in postsecondary education. Despite its proliferation, we rarely have empirical studies on its effectiveness, which 15 particularly important since Vinke et al. (1998) found that the effects of using English as the only medium of teaching to facilitate one' s language abilities and international understanding were not totally positive. This paper thus aims to report student voices regarding English-Only instruction in one department in a comprehensive, private university in Taiwan. Ten student interviews were conducted. Data were analyzed by Carspecken's (1996) reconstructive analysis. The results showed delicate complexity between positive and negative learning effects. The students perceived English improvement in terms of listening, vocabulary and confidence, while they expressed worries about a loss in their acquisition of professional knowledge. In addition to teachers' clarity and expressiveness, students' language ego, intrinsic motivation, proficiency levels and time for adjustment also account for learning effectiveness. Although the results are inconclusive, the complicated factors emerging from student data, I believe, function as a preliminary step for an in-depth understanding of the effectiveness of English-only instruction and the anticipated future internationalization of higher education in Taiwan.

Abstract:When China liberalised its economy and opened up to the (Western) world, it actively promoted the English language at schools and universities on a massive scale. This learn-English movement, riding on the back of English as the dominant international language, has powered English into China's education reforms. We outline the movement and discuss the impact of English on the internationalisation of China's elite universities and the college entrance examination (gaokao – 高考) based on, respectively, studies of the global ranking of China's universities and a large-scale online debate over the English language requirement in gaokao. The first study reveals the shadow of English-isation over the internationalisation of Chinese universities in an academic world where publishing and citations are dominated by the use of English. The second study uncovers, consistent with social identity theory, constructions of opposing arguments reflecting the protagonists’ respective identities as pro- and anti-English supporters.

Affordance of English-Medium Instruction Contexts in Taiwan

Abstract:The proliferation of English-medium instruction (EMI) in nonnative English-speaking (NNES) contexts has compelled researchers to explore the challenges students face in such environments. Mostly quantitative in nature with foci on language-related difficulties in one type of institution or curriculum, these studies obscure the complexity of NNES students' learning of content via English. Through the lens of affordance in van Lier's (2000, 2004a, 2004b, 2007, 2008b) ecology of language education, this qualitative case study examines learning opportunities afforded by two types of EMI contexts in Taiwan: selective EMI courses and an immersion program. Findings showed that despite the limited attention to cultural affordance, more content and language affordances were cognized and acted on in the design where students displayed more interest in subjects, instructors held higher expectations, and flexibility in selection of courses was allowed. As such, this paper underscores the primacy of interests, educational levels, and background knowledge in individual factors; the provision of sufficient English and cultural affordances in contextual factors; and the dynamics between the two in students' learning of content via English.

Abstract:For historical and practical reasons, the language education policy in Hong Kong and Macau is characterised by "multilingualism". At present, bilingual education is spreading across universities and primary and secondary schools in many provinces and cities in mainland China, but faces a number of bottlenecks that need to be addressed, one of which is the policy on bilingual education. This paper examines the role of English in language education policies in Hong Kong, reviewing past and future language education policies in Hong Kong, the historical context of language education policies, the debates over language education policies, and the assessment of the successes or challenges of these policies.

Abstract:This paper reports on an investigation of Chinese university EFL learners' attitudes towards English and Chinese in relation to their motivation to learn the and awareness of their ethnic identity. 302 university students answered a 22-item Language Attitudes Questionnaire and 112 of them answered four open-ended questions. Analyses of the data reveal that the participants held positive attitudes towards English, were motivated to learn the language, and valued their association with English-speaking culture and people, meanwhile considering their native superior to English. Thus the paper concludes that the students had a sound sense of Chinese identity with an appreciation of the value of the English language. Keywords: attitudes; EFL; motivation; ethnic identity Introduction With globalization, communication and interaction between people from various cultures and ethnics increase rapidly. Since plays a major role in the development of social identity in general (Eastman, 1985) and ethnic identity in particular (Giles, Bourhis, & Taylor, 1977; Giles & Johnson, 1981, 1987), research on attitudes towards a second/foreign (SL/FL) and the mother tongue has caught increasing attention (Ibarraran, Lasagabaster, & Sierra, 2008; Lin & Detaramani, 1998; Patri & Pennington, 1998; Pennington & Yue, 1994; Pierson, Fu, & Lee, 1980). As Gudykunst and Schmidt (1987, p. 157) said, language and ethnic identity are related reciprocally, i.e. usage influences the formation of ethnic identity, but ethnic identity also influences attitudes and usage. With the rapid economic development in China, Chinese people's interactions with English-speaking people from various countries have dramatically increased. Adolescents and young adults in contemporary China have a strong desire to learn English because they believe that being able to use English will help them find lucrative employment in the future or because English is necessary for tertiary education (Liu, 2006, 2007a; Yang, Liu, & Wu, 2010). Knowing about their attitudes towards English and their mother tongue at present is important in understanding their ideas about their ethnic identity and adopting appropriate policies in education in the future. For this purpose, the present paper aims to describe the attitudes towards English and Chinese held by Chinese university students. Lower domain language shift in Taiwan: The case of Southern Min

Abstract:Abstract This paper presents data from a quantitative survey based on 746 written questionnaires and 23 semi-structured interviews. The main purpose of the study was to measure Southern Min and Mandarin lower domain language use among a cross-section of Taiwan’s multilingual population. As organizing elements for our discussion of Taiwan’s current language situation, we made use of Sridhar’s notion of societal multilingualism as well as Ó Riagáin’s idea that the home is possibly the first domain to exhibit language shift. This study followed Ó Riagáin by focusing our research on lower domain language use as well as relevant political determinants. We investigated whether Southern Min speakers tend to prefer a Taiwanese rather than Chinese identity, and whether the Taiwanese link their language choice to age, gender, and region of origin. Political improvements in Taiwan for the past two decades did enable the Taiwanese to compete with the Mainlanders who moved to Taiwan and they now have a stronger case to promote the status of Southern Min and maintain it. Evidence of language shift was discovered: proficiency in Mandarin by the Taiwanese is increasing, while that in Southern Min is decreasing. It is predicted that this language shift will continue, but that the attitudes held by Taiwanese toward their ethnic identity might slow down such a process considerably.

A systematic review of the use of WeChat in teaching Chinese as a foreign language

Abstract:Over the years, social media have gained popularity as tools for language teaching. The social media platform WeChat has been employed for teaching Chinese as a foreign language (TCFL). While studies have investigated the use of WeChat for TCFL, no systematic reviews have been conducted to provide an overview of existing research. This review article examines empirical studies on WeChat in TCFL, summarising their main characteristics, findings, and critically assessing the quality and relevance of the available evidence. Scopus and Web of Science were used as primary databases for this review. Relevant studies were identified by using keyword sets such as "WeChat Chinese language", "WeChat Mandarin", "WeChat Hanyu " and "WeChat Putonghua ". The review identified the contexts, research methods and themes of the selected articles. The main themes include language learning, social interactions, learner agency and motivation. The paper also discusses the implications of using WeChat for TCFL and highlights areas for future research. It is hoped that the insights provided here will inform the design and implementation of future courses that use WeChat or other technology-assisted applications for language teaching.
On Development of English Reading Teaching in China: A Literature Review (2003-2023)

Abstract:Reading is the foundation of mastering a language as well as a primary instrument to obtain information. Reading teaching has always been a hot topic in English language teaching (ELT). The present study sought to trace the characteristics of existing studies on English reading teaching in China. Based on research articles in the CNKI database collected by Chinese core journals and CSSCI in the past two decades, 603 studies on English reading teaching were selected and analyzed. Firstly, the Cite Space software is used to visualize the annual number of published papers, research hotspots and research trends. Subsequently, a detailed content analysis was conducted to distil and summarise the predominant research foci in English reading instruction in China over the past twenty years. The results show that the number of published papers on reading teaching research in China increases first and then fluctuates. The evolution of research topics is discerned to encompass three distinct stages and was influenced by prevailing educational policies. The research foci mainly include three aspects: English reading teaching modes, English reading teaching strategies and English reading ability. This comprehensive review aims to map out the current research landscape, shedding light on future scholarly inquiry in English reading teaching
