Abstract:Fluorine and other halides commonly exist in nuclear waste forms, and due to their volatile nature, halide retention poses an issue affecting waste loading during vitrification. The compositional effect on fluorine in-corporation in aluminosilicate glasses is investigated through molecular dynamics simulations. Oxygen and fluorine coordination numbers around glass former and modifier cations, bond angle distributions, and medium range structure features such as Qn distributions, ring size distributions and neutron diffraction structure factors were calculated. It was found that fluorine has higher preference to bond to Ca2+ than to Na+, both in the melt and the glass, and there is no Si-F bond formation in the glass but they do exist in the melt. Consequently, CaO for Na2O substitution can be an effective way to help fluorine retention without significantly changing the glass chemistry. These results thus provide insights on fluorine incorporation in the aluminosilicate nuclear waste glasses and the strategy on how to improve fluorine retention both in the glass and the melt.

Abstract:A systematic investigation on glass formation in the PbF2-InF3-BaHPO4 ternary system has been carried out. These glasses have characterized by IR spectra, Raman spectra and differential thermal analysis. The results show that the structure of these glasses is mainly affected by BaHPO4 and InF3 contents. With decreasing BaHPO4 content, the glass structure gradually transforms from metaphosphate to polyphosphate. When InF3 content is low, it mainly acts as network modifier, when its content is high; it enters glass matrix and forms In(O,F)(6) groups connecting the polymerized phosphorus oxygen species. PbF2 mainly acts as network modifier in this system. Systematic variations of the glass transition temperature and the thermal stability index agree well with these results. The most stable glass with Delta T = 230 degrees C and S = 21.79 K is obtained. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Fluoride glasses are one of the first glass systems studied by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations due to its highly ionic nature in chemical bonding that enable effective description of interatomic interactions with point charges and pairwise potentials. In this chapter, applications of MD simulations to the study of fluoride glasses and mixed anion oxyhalide glasses are summarized. Various empirical potentials and simulation procedure for fluoride and oxyfluoride glasses are explained. Then the structures of zirconium fluoride (ZrF 4 )-based fluoride glasses from MD simulations are presented. Structural features such as cation coordinations, structural role of cations, and fluorine environments are discussed. Calculations of optical spectra for rare earth-doped fluoride glasses are reported. This is followed by a summary of recent MD simulations of oxyfluoride glasses. Results of several aluminosilicate oxyfluoride glasses are presented. The capability to directly observe nanoscale phase separation of these glasses in MD simulations and their correlation to the crystal nucleation and growth are discussed. Applications of ab initio MD on simulations of halide glasses are also introduced. In summary, MD simulations provide a wealth of structural information of fluoride and oxyfluoride glasses that help to understand features from optical emission spectra to phase separation and possible crystal formation in these glasses.

Abstract:While phosphotellurite glasses have superior properties over SiO2-based glasses for many applications in optoelectronics and photonic devices, their high hydroxyl content limits their use in the mid-infrared range. This drawback can be overcome by fluoride addition to the formulation. In this work, we report the preparation, optical, and structural characterization of new glasses in the ternary system TeO2-xNaF-NaPO3 having the compositions 0.8TeO2-0.2[xNaF-(1 - x)NaPO3] and 0.6TeO2-0.4[xNaF-(1 - x)NaPO3] (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) obtained by the traditional melt-quenching method and labeled as T8NNx and T6NNx, respectively. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) reveals high thermal stability against crystallization, with Tx-Tg varying from 80 to 130 °C, depending on fluoride/phosphate ratios. Raman spectroscopy suggests that the network connectivity increases with increasing phosphate concentration. 125Te, 23Na, 31P, and 19F NMR spectroscopy provides detailed structural information about Te-O-P, Te-F, Te-O-Te, P-O-P, and P-F linkages and the charge compensation mechanism for the sodium ions. The present study is the first comprehensive structural characterization of a fluorophosphotellurite glass system.

Abstract:A series of syntheses in the HF–ZrO2–P2O5–pyridine–H2O system have been performed in an attempt to synthesize novel materials with open zirconium phosphate framework structures. One of the resulting products, designated ZrPOF–pyr (∣(C5H6N)4(H2O)2∣[Zr12P16O60(OH)4F8]), has been characterized by XRD, SEM and TG-DTA, and its crystal structure determined from powder diffraction data using direct methods (Pnnm, a=19.1595(2)Å, b=15.1428(1)Å, c=6.61804(6)Å). The framework structure, consisting of corner sharing ZrO6, ZrO5F, ZrO4F2 octahedra and PO4 and PO3OH tetrahedra, proved to be identical to that of ∣(C5H16N2)2(H2O)6∣[Zr12P16O60(OH)4F8], which had been reported previously. In both structures, the terminal P–OH group is disordered. The non-framework species (pyridinium ion and water molecule) could be located in the channels of the framework. Structure solution was also performed using a charge-flipping algorithm, which makes no symmetry assumptions, to verify that the P–OH disorder is inherent to the material and not a result of an incorrectly assumed space group. The phase is thermally stable to 450°C, but transforms to another phase at higher temperatures.

Abstract:Tremendous enhancement of optical emission efficiency was achieved in fluorosilicate glasses by growing lanthanide doped fluoride nanocrystals embedded in oxide glass matrix. The formation mechanism of the microstructure was elucidated by combining solid-state NMR, scanning TEM, EDX map, and large-scale molecular dynamics simulations. The results reveal that the growth of fluoride nanocrystals in fluorosilicate glass was originated from fluoride phase separation. Atomic level structures of phase separation of fluoride-rich regions in oxyfluoride glasses matrix were observed from both EDX maps and MD simulations, and it was found that, while silicon exclusively coordinated by oxygen and alkali earth ions and lanthanide mainly coordinated by fluorine, aluminum played the role of linking the two fluoride glass and oxide glass regions by bonding to both oxygen and fluoride ions.

Abstract:The nucleation and crystallization of Li2O–Al2O3–SiO2 glasses doped with 0, 0.4, 0.8 and 1.2wt.% F− were investigated. With increasing fluoride content, the transformations from glass to β-quartz solid solution (β-quartz) and β-quartz to β-spodumene solid solution (β-spodumene) appeared at lower temperatures. The crystallization peak temperature (Tp) and activation energies (E) decreased, the Avrami exponent (n) and pre-exponential factor (ν) increased. The results suggest that fluoride promotes the initial crystallization and diffusion in the glass.

Abstract:Short range structure and oxygen bonding of a series of low-melting, water-resistant lead-zinc metaphosphate and polyphosphate glasses were characterized by Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectrophotometer and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). FTIR studies showed that these glasses consist of long chains of phosphate tetrahedra. Decreasing P2O5 content and increasing PbO and/or ZnO contents lead to the formation of P-O-Pb(Zn) linkages through the delocalization of P=O and P-O− bonds. The length of phosphate chains decreases with increasing PbO and/or ZnO contents. Binding energies of P2p, Pb4f7/2, Pb4f5/2, Zn2p3/2 and O1s have been determined from the respective XPS spectra. The O1s spectrum was deconvoluted based on three peaks, symmetric bridging oxygen (P-O-P), nonbridging oxygen (P-O−, including P=O) and asymmetric bridging oxygen (P-O-Pb and/or P-O-Zn). The fraction of P-O-Pb(Zn) bondings is quantitatively worked out. It is compositionally dependent and is maximized at a ZnO content of 10 mol%. More covalent P-O-Pb(Zn) bondings are created for glasses with higher PbO contents in polyphosphate glasses to a structure with enhanced connectivity and cross-linking which explains the increase in Tg and Td, and the decrease in thermal expansion coefficient and dissolution rate.

Abstract:To improve the ability of anti-crystallization,P2O5 was introduced to substitute CdF2 in the fluoride glass,consisting of 20GaF3-15InF3-20CdF2-15ZnF2-10SnF2-20PbF2(GICZSP).The effect of P2O5 contents on crystallization stability and structure was studied by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC),Raman spectroscopy and X-Ray Diffraction analyses(XRD).The results indicate that P2O5 can improve the crystallization stability.P2O5 exists as [PO4-4,Q0] tetrahedron which has no PO bond.When the amount of P2O5 being increased,a new M6 octahedral structure emerges.

Abstract:The structure of (ZnO)x(P2O5)100-x glasses with 35≤x ≤ 67 is investigated using 31P and ultra-high field 67Zn NMR spectroscopy. The 31P NMR results confirm a nearly binary Q-species distribution. The progressive decrease in the connectivity of the phosphate network upon addition of ZnO is manifested in a monotonic drop in Tg in the composition range 35≤x ≤ 55. The 67Zn NMR spectra indicate that the average Zn-O coordination number varies between 4 and 6 and increases progressively with increasing Zn content. The resulting increase in the connectivity of the Zn-O-P network compensates for the depolymerization of the P-O-P network, which is reflected in a reversal in the compositional trend in Tg for x > 55. In contrast to Tg , the fragility index m shows negligible composition dependence until x∼50, beyond which it increases rapidly with increasing Zn content in response to the progressive shortening of the Q2 chains.

Abstract:A new kind of tellurite glass based on TeO2–B2O3–Bi2O3–PbO system is prepared. It is found that B2O3 is the component that contributes most to increase the thermal stability of the glasses, while Bi2O3 is the most contributing oxide to decrease the thermal stability. The structural origins for the variations of the thermal stability with the glass composition are discussed based on the Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry measurement. The present glasses show potential to be used for photonic devices and low melting point sealing glasses.

Abstract:The vitreous region of the oxyfluoride system based on germanium dioxide, lead fluoride and zinc fluoride is obtained by using platinum crucibles. The physical properties such as the transition temperature, crystallization temperature, refractive index, density, thermal expansion coefficient and elastic modulus are measured. A description to the change rules of the physical properties of this system is given in detail. The glasses have a good transparency in the mid-infrared region. Their chemical durability is much better than that of fluoride glasses.

Abstract:Rare-earth doped fluoro-sulfo-phosphate (FSP) glass is characterized by excellent spectroscopic properties, high thermal and chemical stability, seving as potential candidates for laser glass and high-gain active optical fiber matrix. However, the underlying contributions of compositional variations to structure and property in FSP glass systems are still indistinct due to their complex mixed-anion nature. Herein, the glass-forming region, structure, physical and luminescent properties of several FSP glasses have been characterized. The results show FSP glasses possess the advantages of fluoro-phosphate glasses such as high rare-earth ion solubility, low refractive index and phonon density of states. Meanwhile, the mixed-anion structure improves the thermal and chemical stability, elastic modulus as well as spectroscopic parameters. The fabricated FSP samples have good glass-forming ability, low non-linear refractive index (minimun: 1.2×10 –13 esu), good thermal stability ( △ T max =181 ℃ ), chemical stability (DR min =0.7×10 –7 g·cm –2 min –1 ) and relatively high elastic modulus ( E max =68.8 GPa). The maximum of emission cross-section of Nd 3+ : 4 F 3/2 → 4 I 11/2 is 3.3×10 –20 cm 2 , effective linewidth is 32.1 nm, lifetime is 372 μs, FOM and gain bandwidth are 1.2×10 –23 s·cm 2 and 105.9×10 –27 cm 3 , respectively. These results are higher than phosphate or fluoro-phosphate laser glasses, indicating the broad application prospects of FSP glasses in laser glass, fiber lasers and amplifiers.

Abstract:The aim of the present work was to study a novel type of borosilicate glass with excellent chemical stability and high ultraviolet transmission. The impact of the content of Al2O3 and B2O3 on the microstructure and ultraviolet transmission of borosilicate glass was studied by Raman, FTIR, SEM and UV VIS-NIR spectrophotometer. The chemical stability was studied by chemical stability test. The results showed that when the addition of Al2O3 increased, the chemical stability of the glass turned worse. We found that when the addition of B2O3 was 13 wt. %, the erosion degrees of the boron-rich phase of the glass was significantly more serious than other samples. And when the addition of B2O3 was 11 wt.%, it had the best chemical stability. Moreover, the UV transmittance of glass samples gradually decreased with increasing Al2O3 content, and the UV transmittance of glass samples increased first and then decreased with increasing B2O3 content.

Abstract:Oxyfluoride glass and glass ceramics have been widely used in optical devices with Ln(3+) doping. Especially, fluoride phase separation is considered as the initial stage of nanocrystallization that can help to realize the controllable crystallization and also provide the low phonon energy environment in oxyfluoride glass. Therefore, a structure model to describe this phase separated glass system is in great help for designing optical materials with high luminescence. In this study, large-scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed to understand the structural heterogeneity and make attempt to propose a structure model for fluoroaluminosilicate glass. The simulation results reveal immiscible behaviors of the fluoroaluminosilicate glass that separate into fluoride-rich phase and aluminosilicate-rich residual matrix, which have structural features analogous to fluoride and aluminosilicate glass, respectively. Besides, Al3+ plays an essential role to inter-connect oxygen and fluorine ions on the oxide-fluoride phase interface, maintaining the stability of the glass system.

Abstract:Optical waveguide fluoride glasses face a number of difficult problems despite their potential for ultralow loss. One of the most serious is scattering loss from defects such as inclusions, phase separation particles and crystallites. By means of a Leitz optical microscope, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscope (TEM) and differential thermal analysis (DTA), we have investigated the phase separation and crystallization phenomena in ZrF4BaF2LaF3AlF3 fluoride glasses. Phase-separated particles, which formed via the nucleation and growth mechanism, were observed in the glass. The crystallites in the glass are confirmed to be beta-BaF2·ZrF4 and alpha-BaF2·2ZrF4. The activation energies of crystallization of these phases were determined by DTA.
