Abstract:Fluorine and other halides commonly exist in nuclear waste forms, and due to their volatile nature, halide retention poses an issue affecting waste loading during vitrification. The compositional effect on fluorine in-corporation in aluminosilicate glasses is investigated through molecular dynamics simulations. Oxygen and fluorine coordination numbers around glass former and modifier cations, bond angle distributions, and medium range structure features such as Qn distributions, ring size distributions and neutron diffraction structure factors were calculated. It was found that fluorine has higher preference to bond to Ca2+ than to Na+, both in the melt and the glass, and there is no Si-F bond formation in the glass but they do exist in the melt. Consequently, CaO for Na2O substitution can be an effective way to help fluorine retention without significantly changing the glass chemistry. These results thus provide insights on fluorine incorporation in the aluminosilicate nuclear waste glasses and the strategy on how to improve fluorine retention both in the glass and the melt.

Abstract:The effects of Nd substitution in Gd55-xNdxCo20Al25 (x=0, 5, 10, 15 and 20) amorphous ribbon samples on glass-forming ability and thermal stability are studied. The change of microstructure cannot be identified by X-ray diffraction. The forecast of glass-forming ability following Fang's method shows the increase with x, which is further confirmed experimentally by the increasing reduced glass-transition temperatures. The thermal stability has a minimum at x=10, and it is suggested to be due to the different effects of the reducing of Gd and the increase of Nd.

Abstract:A systematic investigation on glass formation in the PbF2-InF3-BaHPO4 ternary system has been carried out. These glasses have characterized by IR spectra, Raman spectra and differential thermal analysis. The results show that the structure of these glasses is mainly affected by BaHPO4 and InF3 contents. With decreasing BaHPO4 content, the glass structure gradually transforms from metaphosphate to polyphosphate. When InF3 content is low, it mainly acts as network modifier, when its content is high; it enters glass matrix and forms In(O,F)(6) groups connecting the polymerized phosphorus oxygen species. PbF2 mainly acts as network modifier in this system. Systematic variations of the glass transition temperature and the thermal stability index agree well with these results. The most stable glass with Delta T = 230 degrees C and S = 21.79 K is obtained. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Various fluorine-containing Y-SiAlON glass-ceramics from a mixture of Y2O3, α-Si3N4, SiO2, and Al2O3 using AlF3 as the fluorine source were prepared by one-step or two-step carbothermal reduction process. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used to study the crystallization behavior of the glass-ceramics. The compositions of the crystals and the glass phase were semi-quantitatively determined by EDX. The final glass-ceramics contained N-containing melilite (Y2Si3O3N4) and β-Si3N4 together with a secondary phase of yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG, Y3Al5O12). The investigated Y-SiAlON glass-ceramics with higher F content showed better sintering properties. Fluorine has important effects on crystallization of glass-ceramics as it affects the crystallization mechanism by reducing the thermal energy barrier for crystallization. By controlling the reaction, the Y-SiAlON glass-ceramics are first held at 1300°C for 4h, which contrasts with the samples obtained after direct sintering at 1550°C, the conversion to Y2Si3O3N4 and β-Si3N4 is promoted and the final microstructure consists of elongated β-Si3N4 grains. These glass-ceramics showed relatively better mechanical properties.

Abstract:In order to further understand the dependence of the refractive index on composition, a systematic investigation of the relationship between these quantities has been undertaken. Starting with well known stable quinary glass compositions containing zirconium tetrafluoride, the effects of dopants such as alkali ions and PbF2 on the refractive index have been investigated. In addition, thermal analysis was carried out to ascertain the extent to which glass stability had been affected by the compositional changes. A refractive index difference, DELTAn, of up to 0.02 and numerical aperture (NA) of 0.23 was obtained at compositions for which the difference in glass transition temperature, DELTAT(g), was only 1-degrees-C. The molar refractivity for stable glass systems showed a good correlation with theoretically predicted results, except for systems containing LiF.

Abstract:While phosphotellurite glasses have superior properties over SiO2-based glasses for many applications in optoelectronics and photonic devices, their high hydroxyl content limits their use in the mid-infrared range. This drawback can be overcome by fluoride addition to the formulation. In this work, we report the preparation, optical, and structural characterization of new glasses in the ternary system TeO2-xNaF-NaPO3 having the compositions 0.8TeO2-0.2[xNaF-(1 - x)NaPO3] and 0.6TeO2-0.4[xNaF-(1 - x)NaPO3] (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) obtained by the traditional melt-quenching method and labeled as T8NNx and T6NNx, respectively. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) reveals high thermal stability against crystallization, with Tx-Tg varying from 80 to 130 °C, depending on fluoride/phosphate ratios. Raman spectroscopy suggests that the network connectivity increases with increasing phosphate concentration. 125Te, 23Na, 31P, and 19F NMR spectroscopy provides detailed structural information about Te-O-P, Te-F, Te-O-Te, P-O-P, and P-F linkages and the charge compensation mechanism for the sodium ions. The present study is the first comprehensive structural characterization of a fluorophosphotellurite glass system.

Abstract:Fluorosilicate glasses are widely applied as optical and luminescent materials to host a variety of lanthanides. However, fluorides evaporation causes notable difference between the actual composition and the nominal composition of fluorosilicate glass. In this work, a series of SiO2 - Al2O3 - MF2 (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) glasses are fabricated, and quantitative element analysis is performed to determine the actual composition of the fluorosilicate glasses through an inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer (ICP-AES) and a gas chromatography analysis. A series of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are carried out to study the glass network microstructures. The phase separation with silicate and fluoride phases is clearly observed in the MD simulated structures and agrees well with the observed self-crystallization of fluorides in the experiments. SiF4 as well as CaF2 / SrF2 / BaF2 are confirmed as the major evaporated substances from the glass melts. The phase separation may well inhibit the evaporation of SiF4 through partitioning Si4+ and F- ions into silicate phase and fluoride phase, respectively. The phase separation may enrich the alkaline earth cations into fluoride phase thus aggravate the evaporated loss of alkaline earth elements. This study is then help to understand the mechanism of fluoride evaporation from glass melts, and quantitatively predict actual composition of the fluorosilicate glasses.

Abstract:Glass forming regions in the CdF2-BaF2-LiF system were determined through melting-quenching technique. The structure of 36CdF(2)-34BaF(2)-30LiF (mol%) (CBL glass) was studied by Xray diffraction and molecular dynamics simulation methods. The Cd atoms are six-, seven- and eightfold coordinated by fluorines. The average Cd-F bond length is 2.29 Angstrom. The Cd-Cd atom distance is about 3.52 Angstrom for edge-sharing and 4.03 Angstrom for corner-sharing in the MD-derived glass. The glass structure can be discribed as a network made up of edge-sharing and corner-sharing [CdFn] polyhedra which are partial linked by Lif ions. The role of Li+ ions in the fluoride glasses was discussed. It was proposed that Li+ may play the outpolarization effort in fluoride glass as it does in the oxide one. This effort can play a positive role to the connectivity of the network based on the good glass formers. However, in the glass based on the weak-bonded glass formers, the relative strong Li-F bond results in a decrease of its chemical durability as it does in the CdF2-BaF2-LiF system.

Abstract:The Yb3+/Er3+ co-doped and Er3+ single doped oxyfluoride glasses were prepared by high temperature melting method. The optical properties of the samples were studied. According to differential thermal analysis (DTA) curve, the samples were thermal treated at 552°C, and micro-crystalline were formed after thermal treatment. The near infrared luminescence spectra under 980 nm excitation of the samples were recorded at room temperature. The results showed that the near infrared luminescence intensity increased with increasing Yb3+ concentration. This is because Yb3+ ions absorbed pumped energy of 980 nm through 2F7/2 → 2F5/2 transition, and then the energy was transferred to Er3+ ions by the way of resonance energy transfer and enhanced the 4I15/2 → 4I11/2 transition.

Abstract:The substitutions of BaF2 for BaO were made in BaO- Ga2O3- GeO2 system. Effect of fluoride on the properties of glasses was investigated. The glass transformation temperature, onset temperature of crystallization, refractive index and IR transmitting spectra were determined. Replacement of oxygen by fluorine in barium gallium germanate glass reduces the refractive index, the T-g and the T-x, while increasing the DeltaT. The concentration of hydroxyl decreases greatly as the fluoride being introduced, and the absorption of hydroxyl at about 3300cm(-1) decrease as the increase of fluoride content.

Abstract:The nucleation and crystallization behavior of Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2 glasses with varied amounts of Fluorine content were investigated by the differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction, (XRD) and the scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that with the increase of the fluorine concentration, the crystallization peak temperature (T-p.) decreases, the crystallization I activation energy (E) decreases, the Avrami exponent (n) increases.. The onset of the precipitation of LixAlxSi1-x O-2 crystal and its transformation to beta-spodumene all shift to lower temperature and the grain size increases with the fluorine added. The values of the Avrami exponent (n) and the crystallization activation energy (E) agree well with the scanning electron microscopy observation of equivalent axis grain crystal. The results suggest that the fluorine promotes the initial crystallization and ion diffusion in the glass system.

Abstract:The effect of fluorine source on the crystallization behaviors of the R2O–MgO–Al2O3–B2O3–SiO2–F (R=K+, Na+) glasses is studied by differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectrum. Two glasses with the same composition were prepared by using NaF and MgF2 as the source of fluorine, respectively. The glass with the fluorine source of NaF is quite stable during heat-treatment. Only large dendrite crystals form on the surface of this glass, while the interior of the glass still remains amorphous. In contrast, the glass with the fluorine source of MgF2 exhibits uniform bulk crystallization and forms mica-containing glass-ceramics after heat-treatment. The structure difference between these two glasses was investigated by Raman spectrum. The glass with the fluorine source of NaF shows a simple Raman spectrum. Boroxol rings are found to be the dominant unit in this glass. In contrast, multiple peaks appear on the Raman spectrum of the glass with the fluorine source of MgF2, and these peaks are resolved to the vibrations of three- or four-coordinated boron units, such as chain-type metaborate groups, pentaborate groups, diborate groups, highly changed orthoborate groups, pyroborate groups, as well as boroxol rings. The stability of the glass with the NaF fluorine source is attributed to the high stability of the boroxol rings in this glass.

Abstract:The effects of melting conditions on the thermal properties and OH group absorption of BaF2-Ga2O3/GaF3-GeO2 system glasses were studied by DTA thermal analysis and infrared absorption spectroscopy.The results indicate that,both the melting temperature and melting time have significant influence on the glass transformation temperature of barium gallium germanate glass containing fluoride.Under the situation without atmosphere protection,a reasonably high melting temperature and long melting time could improve dewatering effect and reduce the OH group content in the glass.However,the excessively higher melting temperature and the excessively longer melting time can increase the OH group content in glasses because of the penetration of water vapor in furnace atmosphere.In order to obtain the glass material with low OH content for infrared transmission,fluoride should be added,and the appropriate melting conditions and atmosphere protection should also be adopted.

Abstract:The nucleation and crystallization of Li2O–Al2O3–SiO2 glasses doped with 0, 0.4, 0.8 and 1.2wt.% F− were investigated. With increasing fluoride content, the transformations from glass to β-quartz solid solution (β-quartz) and β-quartz to β-spodumene solid solution (β-spodumene) appeared at lower temperatures. The crystallization peak temperature (Tp) and activation energies (E) decreased, the Avrami exponent (n) and pre-exponential factor (ν) increased. The results suggest that fluoride promotes the initial crystallization and diffusion in the glass.

Abstract:The glass-forming regions of BaF2-Ga2O3-GeO2 and BaF2-GaF3-GeO2 systems were investigated when fluoride was introduced into the barium gallium germanate glass. The effect of the components on the thermal properties of glass was analyzed by differential thermal analysis. The results show that the glass-forming region decreases with the increase of fluoride component number. For barium gallium germanium system with fluoride, the crystallization temperature of Tx has a maximum value and the transition temperature Tg has a minimum value when the Ga content increases. When the content of Ga is constant, Tx also appears a maximum value when the BaF2 content increases. In the molar fraction, for the BaF2-Ga2O3-GeO2 system, the optimal content of Ga2O3 in 20BaF2 series glass is 16.5%, and the optimum BaF2 content of 15Ga2O3 series glass is 15.5%. For the BaF2-GaF3-GeO2 system, the optimum GaF3 content of 10BaF2 series glass is 20.0%, and the optimum BaF2 content of 15 GaF3 series glass is 10.0%.

Abstract:In order to improve the ability of glasses against devitrification, Ba(PO_3)_2 was introduced to fluoroaluminate basic glass, which consisting of 10MgF_2·20CaF_2·BaF_2·10SrF_2·15YF_3·35AlF_3, to substitute BaF_2 in the glass. The influences of Ba(PO_3)_2 contents on the properties and crystallization kinetics of glasses were studied by differential thermal analysis technique. The experiment results indicate that more Ba(PO_3)_2 content will increase the T_g and T_x of glasses, reduce melting temperature of glasses and improve also the ability of glass forming. A 8 mm thick glass plate can be obtained with the glass substituted by 2% (in mole, same below) Ba(PO_3)_2. In addition, the transmitting spectrum of glass containing 2% Ba(PO_3)_2 was measured, the infrared transmitting region reaches to 4 μm. This glass is stable, and has a wide infrared transparent region, therefore it is a potential optical glass material.

Abstract:The effects of F- ions on physical and spectroscopic properties of the Yb3+ in tellurite glass system are investigated. The results show that the glass system takes on good thermal stability with the content of ZnF2 lower than 15 mol%, both the emission cross-section and the fluorescence lifetime of Yb3+ ions increase evidently which indicate that such oxyfluoride tellurite glass system is a promising laser host matrix for high power generation. FT-IR spectra were used to analyze the effect of F- ions on the structure of tellurite glasses and OH- groups in this glass system. Analysis demonstrates that addition of fluoride decreases the symmetry of the structure of tellurite glasses which increases the emission cross-section and removes the OH- groups, and which improves the measured fluorescence lifetime of Yb3+ ions. Abstract:The optical and thermal properties of a new class of fluoroindate glass with different erbium contents were investigated via Raman, transmission, and fluorescence spectroscopies, fluorescence decay curve analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry. The strength parameters of the samples were calculated using the Judd–Ofelt theory. The mid-infrared luminescence properties of erbium-doped fluoroindate glasses were studied, and a strong emission at 2.7 μm was obtained. Compared with the traditional ZBLAN glass, this glass has excellent emission properties, especially a longer fluorescence lifetime (7.09 ms) and larger emission cross-section (6.95 × 10−21 cm2) at 2.7 μm. The results indicate that fluoroindate glass is an attractive host for mid-infrared lasers and as a gain medium for optical amplifier applications.

Abstract:The effect of NaF and NaCl addition on the crystallization kinetics of fluorozirconate glasses was studied by differential thermal analysis (DTA). The activation energy for crystallization was obviously decreased, Tx-Tg increased and the glass-forming ability improved by the addition of NaF and NaCl. DTA experimental results were analysed by Augis-Bennett method and modified Kissinger method. The crystallization activation energies obtained from both Augis-Bennett and modified Kissinger methods are almost the same, while the frequency factor V obtained from Augis-Bennett method is one magnitude lower than that from modified Kissinger method. The stability of fluorozirconate glasses was evaluated by a new crystallization kinetic criterion and correlated with the activation energy and compared with those evaluated by other criteria.
