Abstract:Water-dispersed nanocrystals with high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and narrow size distribution are desirable for a variety of bioapplications. In this report, we present a facile method assisted by microwave irradiation for rapidly synthesizing high-quality CdTe nanocrystals in aqueous phase. The PLQY of CdTe nanocrystals prepared in very short time (15 min) reaches as high as 82%, and the fwhm value is merely 27 nm meanwhile. Moreover, the PLQY is increased to a remarkable 98% after further amelioration through the illumination method. The key synthesis parameters (molar ratio of reagents, pH values, reaction temperature, and time) are fully discussed, and the optimum conditions are illuminated in this paper. In addition, the mechanism about microwave irradiation improving the quality of nanocrystals is discussed as well.

Abstract:A novel microwave-assisted method of growth of high-quality CdTe/CdS core-shell nanocrystals in the aqueous phase is presented in this paper. The photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) is greatly enhanced by epitaxial growth of the CdS shell. Under optimum conditions, the PLQY of as-prepared nanocrystals reaches as high as 75% without any post-treatment. Furthermore, these investigations demonstrate that microwave irradiation is tremendously useful for fast epitaxial growth of nanocrystals due to its special characteristics. As a result, the microwave synthesis is sufficiently time-economizing (only five minutes are required) to obtain optimum amounts of CdTe/CdS core-shell nanocrystals in comparison to the conventional illumination method (several days are required). Therefore, this current research not only provides a rapid microwave synthesis for producing highly fluorescent CdTe/CdS core-shell nanocrystals, but also it presents some advantages of the microwave synthesis in comparison to the illumination method.

Abstract:A novel method, the program process of microwave irradiation (PPMI), which commendably integrates good qualities of microwave irradiation and a programmed heating process, is presented to synthesize high-quality CdTe nanocrystals in aqueous solution. Microwave irradiation, which acts as the heating mode of PPMI, is highly favorable for a narrow size distribution and low concentration of surface defects of nanocrystals. On the other hand, two correlative processes ( the first process and the second process) are utilized in PPMI to actualize the programmed heating process, which is an effective strategy to improve the quality of nanocrystals. Thus, a series (diameters similar to 2-4 nm) of highly luminescent (PLQY similar to 30-68%) CdTe nanocrystals were rapidly prepared ( reaction time similar to 1-30 min) in aqueous phase through PPMI.

Abstract:By using a novel procedure, a new kind of water-soluble CdTe nanocrystals (NCs) is synthesized in aqueous solutions at the temperature of 100 degrees C. In this procedure, tripeptide thiol glutathione was used as stabilizing agent, CdTe NCs with controllable photoluminescence wavelength from 500 nm to 680 nm were prepared within two hours. Compared with CdTe NCs prepared with thiohydracrylic acid as stabilizing agent, as-prepared NCs show much narrower photoluminescence FWHM, more symmetrical emission peak and higher photoluminescence quantum yield. The surface structure of as-prepared CdTe NCs is deduced, therefore, there may be some unreported circular structure on the surface. Experimental results show that as-prepared NCs have very good biological compatibility and they are nontoxic. And these CdTe NCs can conjugate with biological molecules for further biological luminescence study. The proposed hydrothermal synthesis procedure has the advantage of simplicity, inexpensiveness, time saving and mild operating conditions.

Abstract:An easy and fast microwave-assisted method of tuning the photoluminescence properties of CdTe nanocrystals in aqueous phase is presented. The photoluminescence could be tuned covering almost the whole visual spectral range (537-680 nm), and even partially extending to the near-infrared spectral range. The effect is probably related to the formation of core/shell structure and complex nano-assemblies. These results provide a promising means of tuning the photoluminescence of CdTe nanocrystals, leading to potential applications in biomedical labeling, solar cells, lasers, and other fields.

Abstract:Fabrication of nanocrystals from their disordered solid-state precursors represents a new synthetic strategy. Compared to the widely used chemical vapor deposition and wet-chemistry based methods employing gas and liquid phased precursors, the solid-state transformation of disordered solid precursors to highly ordered crystals is a great challenge due to the severely restricted mass transport and inadequate structural directing mechanism. Herein, we report a rapid-heating-triggered in situ solid-state crystal growth method capable of transforming amorphous TiO2 nanotubes into anatase nanocrystals with well-defined facets and uniform sizes within a minute. The results obtained from in situ transmission electron microscopy and three-dimensional phase-field simulation indicate that the basic building blocks are formed through mechanical rupture of an amorphous TiO2 nanotube precursor, followed by an enhanced diffusion and concomitant oriented attachment onto TiO2 crystal nuclei mediated by the fluorine species evolved from the rapid heating. The unique crystal growth demonstrated in this work provides an alternative synthetic means for fabrication of other nanocrystals from solid-state precursors.
Rapid Aqueous Synthesis of High-quality CdTe Colloidal Quantum Dots

Abstract:The rapid aqueous synthesis of CdTe quantum dots modified by thioglycolic acid(TGA) was studied through investigating and improving the factors which influence the synthesis. The control of photoluminescence properties was realized through systematically changing the volume of anhydrous ethanol and water, the temperature and the original pH value. The high-quality CdTe QDs with narrower full width at half maximum of photoluminescence spectra and larger quantum yield were obtained. Under the optimal condition (as the volume of anhydrous ethanol and water is 3 and 1 mL, original pH value is 8.0, the temperature is 40 degrees C), the maximum quantum yield at room temperature is approximately 68%. A white precipitate emerged during reflux. After depositing for a week, the fluorescence intensity of the QDs with white precipitate was dramatically enhanced by 15% than that of the QDs which the white precipitate was removed. Besides, the white precipitate is preferable for the narrowing of the size distribution.

Abstract:One chemical reagent, hydrazine hydrate, was discovered to accelerate the growth of semiconductor nanocrystals (cadmium telluride) instead of additional energy, which was applied to the synthesis of high-quality CdTe nanocrystals at room temperature and ambient conditions within several hours. Under this mild condition the mercapto stabilizers were not destroyed, and they guaranteed CdTe nanocrystal particle sizes with narrow and uniform distribution over the largest possible range. The CdTe nanocrystals (photoluminescence emission range of 530-660 nm) synthesized in this way had very good spectral properties; for instance, they showed high photoluminescence quantum yield of up to 60%. Furthermore, we have succeeded in detecting the living Borrelia burgdorferi of Lyme disease by its photoluminescence image using CdTe nanocrystals.

Abstract:A novel aqueous route for the synthesis of high-quality CdTe nanocrystals(NCs) is presented in this article. With both glutathione(GSH) and cysteine[n(GSH):n(cysteine)=1:3] as stabilizers, high-quality CdTe NCs with controllable photoluminescence(PL) wavelength from 500 to 630 nm can be prepared within 4 h. As-prepared CdTe NCs show higher photoluminescence quantum yields(PLQY) compared with CdTe NCs prepared via other aqueous methods. When the fluorescent emission peak appeared in orange-red window, the PLQY reaches 70% or above at room temperature without any post-preparative treatment.

Abstract:A facile and rapid strategy was developed for the synthesis of ultrabright luminescent carbon nanodots (CDs) with tunable wavelength from 464 to 556 nm by introducing glutaraldehyde into the precursor solution under microwave irradiation. The fluorescence properties, including excitation and emission wavelength, quantum yield, and size of the CDs, were adjusted by changing the amount of glutaraldehyde and poly(ethylenimine). Several methods such as high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and dynamic light scattering, UV-vis, fluorescence, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were employed to study the morphology and the properties of CDs. The luminescence mechanism was also discussed. In addition, confocal microscopy imaging revealed that the as-prepared CDs could be used as effective fluorescent probes in the cell imaging without obvious cytotoxicity. Moreover, a novel sensor for the detection of Co(2+) was proposed on the basis of Co(2+)-induced fluorescence quenching. These superior properties demonstrated the potential application of the CDs in cellular imaging and ion sensing.

Abstract:The highly fluorescent CdTe quantum dots(QDs)have been synthesized by using thioglycolic acid(TGA) as a stabilizer and a new procedure of the introduction of Te source in aqueous solution.CdTe nanocrystals(NCs) have a tunable fluorescence emission wavelength range from 510 nm to 620 nm.Their narrowest full width at half maximum(FWHM) of about 34 nm,and the maximum quantum yield(QYs) of 60%.These CdTe nanocrystals were characterized by absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy,X-ray powder diffraction,transmission electron microscopy,energy dispersive X-ray and FT-IR spectroscopy.The effects of starting pH and the molar ratio of TGA/Cd2+ on the synthesis of CdTe QDs were investigated.The experimental results indicate that starting pH plays an important role in improving optical properties and controlling the growth rate of CdTe nanocrystals.The possible growth mechanism of CdTe nanocrystals at various pH was discussed.A new modified LSW model of particles growth was proposed.

Abstract:We have developed a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method, where both microwave and hydrothermal techniques are utilized to synthesize CdTe nanocrystals with high quality in less than 55 s. Among the known preparation methods, the monodisperse CdTe nanocrystals showing narrow emission spectra, widest scope of emission peak(from 500 nm to 822 nm) and high quantum yield(up to 80%) were synthesized by this route. The quantum yield of CdTe with near-infrared emission(>800 nm) is up to 10%, which is better than that of InAs(0.5%-2%) synthesized in organic phase. Moreover, we detected the latent fingerprints on aluminum, plastic, glass and papers by prepared CdTe nanocrystals, and photoluminescence fingerprints images were taken with a digital camera. Then the images would transmitt into fingerprint detection system of computer to identify the criminals in suit.

Abstract:Here we present a facile one-pot method to prepare high-quality CdTe nanocrystals in aqueous phase. In contrast to the use of oxygen-sensitive NaHTe or H(2)Te as Te source in the current synthetic methods, we employ more stable sodium tellurite as the Te source for preparing highly luminescent CdTe nanocrystals in aqueous solution. By selecting mercaptosuccinic acid (MSA) as capping agent and providing the borate-citrate acid buffering solution, CdTe nanocrystals with high quantum yield (QY >70% at pH range 5.0-8.0) can be conveniently prepared by this method. The influence of parameters such as the pH value of the precursor solution and the molar ratio of Cd(2+) to Na(2)TeO(3) on the QY of CdTe nanocrystals was systematically investigated in our experiments. Under optimal conditions, the QY of CdTe nanocrystals is even high up to 83%. The biological application of luminescent MSA-CdTe to HEK 293 cell imaging was also illustrated.

Abstract:We demonstrate the synthesis of near-IR-emitting zinc blende CdTe/CdS tetrahedral-shaped nanocrystals with a magic-sized (similar to 0.8 nm radius) CdTe core and a thick CdS shell (up to 5 nm). These high-quality water-soluble nanocrystals were obtained by a simple but reliable aqueous method at low temperature. During the growth of the shell over the magic core, the core/shell nanocrystals change from type I to type II, as revealed by their enormous photoluminescence (PL) emission peak shift (from 480 to 820 nm) and significant increase in PL lifetime (from similar to 1 to similar to 245 ns). These thick-shell nanocrystals have a high PL quantum yield, high photostability, compact size (hydrodynamic diameter less than 11.0 nm), and reduced blinking behavior. The magic-core/thick-shell nanocrystals may represent an important step toward the synthesis and application of next-generation colloidal nanocrystals from solar cell conversion to intracellular imaging.

Abstract:Uniform and ultralong single-crystalline tellurium (Te) nanowires with a diameter of 20 nm and length of tens of micrometers can be rapidly synthesized by a microwave-assisted method. The formation process of high-quality Te nanowires is strongly dependent on the reaction conditions such as the amount of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), pH value of initial solution, reaction time, and the choice of surfactant. The hydrophilic Te nanowires display a broadened luminescent emission from shortwave ultraviolet to visible region excited by vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) under synchrotron radiation at room temperature. Based on the examination of the chemical stability of the as-prepared Te nanowires stored in water, the relationship between the synthetic methodology and chemical stability of Te nanostructures has been discussed.
