Abstract:The combination of zirconocene-mediated coupling of silylated alkynes with a protonation-desilylation or bromination-desilylation process afforded otherwise unavailable butadiene derivatives. When (E,E)-2,3-dialkyl-1,4-bis(trimethylsilyl)-1,3-butadienes were treated with 3 equiv of Br-2 in CH2Cl2, (E)-2,3-dialkyl-1,1,4,4-tetrabromo-2-butenes were obtained in excellent yields with perfect stereoselectivity.

Abstract:Sly silyl caught in the act: Protonation of a mesitylene ring by the strongly acidic arenium carborane [CH(3)C(6)H(6)]- [CHB(11)Me(5)Br(6)] initiates a cascade reaction that results in a stable beta-silyl allyl cation (see picture, H yellow, C blue, silyl allyl group red). Remarkably, the driving force in the reaction suffices to disrupt a stable aromatic ring in favor of a cationic reactive intermediate.

Abstract:Stereo-defined 1,1,4,4-tetrahalo- and 1,1,4,4-mixed-tetrahalo-1,3-butadienes were obtained in excellent yields via desilylation–halogenation of their corresponding 1,4-bis(trimethylsilyl)-1,4-dihalo-1,3-dienes, which could be readily prepared from the zirconocene-mediated high-yield and high-regioselective cyclo-dimerization of 1-trimethylsilyl-1-alkynes followed by halogenation. These poly-functionalized gem-dihalodienes are potentially useful building blocks.

Abstract:Depending on the desilylation reagents used, 1-halo-1,4-bis(trimethylsilyl)-1,3-butadienes afforded either 1-halo-1-trimethylsilyl-1,3-butadienes or 1-halo-4-trimethylsilyl-1,3-butadienes in excellent yields with excellent selectivity, respectively, when treated with CF3COOH or with NaOMe. These monosilylated 1,3-butadiene products could be further desilylated to generate their corresponding halobutadienes via the above reagent-controlled desilylation reaction. When 1,4-dihalo-1,4-bis(trimethylsilyl)-1,3-dienes were treated with MeONa/MeOH at room temperature, desilylation of both of the two trimethylsilyl groups took place to afford their corresponding 1,4-dihalo-1,3-dienes in excellent yields. The commonly used desilylation reagent CF3COOH did not work for these dihalobutadienes.

Abstract:Addition of interelement compounds across alkynes is a straightforward strategy for the synthesis of densely functionalized alkenes, which are versatile units in numerous biologically active compounds. Of these processes the bis-silylation of alkynes is of particular interest, due to the synthetic use of the alkenyl silane reaction products. While cis -bis-silylation of alkynes is well known, trans -bis-silyation of alkynes is relatively underdeveloped. Here, we report the intermolecular trans -bis-silylation of terminal alkynes, using Pd-catalysis and disilane reagent 8-(2-substituted-1,1,2,2-tetramethyldisilanyl)quinoline (TMDQ), to selectively form trans -bis-silylated alkenes. The reaction process was found to be compatible with aryl and alkyl alkynes as well as those bearing electron-withdrawing groups and other alkenyl or alkynyl functionalities. The use of the reaction was displayed through late-stage functionalization of terminal alkynes bearing natural product or drug motifs and onward synthetic transformations of the trans -bis-silylated alkenes reaction products. Experimental and computational mechanistic studies reveal that the reaction probably proceeds through a combined cis -bis-silylation and Z / E isomerization process and that the use of TMDQ as the limiting reagent is key to the desired reactivity.

Abstract:Silyl-substituted 1,3-butadienes are useful building blocks and are readily applied in several types of reactions such as Diels-Alder reaction, ene reaction and allylation. They can also participate in different tandem reactions such as Diels-Alder/allylation, ene/allylation, ene/allylation/Diels-Alder reaction, ene/allylation/ene reaction and ene/allylation/Diels-Alder/allylation reaction. This feature article reviews the synthesis of silyl-substituted 1,3-butadienes, and their applications in the reaction types mentioned above, involving a tandem Diels-Alder/ene/allylation process. This article also introduces some reactions of alkenylsilanes and allylsilanes for comparison and discussion about the tandem reaction. The tandem reactions described in this article are a powerful tool to construct complicated multicyclic compounds with high selectivity and high efficiency.

Abstract:(E)-4-bromo-3-methyl-2-butenoic acid was conveniently synthesized from 3-methyl-2-butenoic acid in 29% overall yield.In this procedure,the title compound was easily obtained by hydrolysis of (E)-trimethylsilyl 4-bromo-3-methyl-2-butenoate,which could be isolated from its mixture of Z-/E-isomer by distillation in vacuo.The isomeric mixture was prepared via the esterification of 3-methyl-2-butenoic acid with chlorotrimethylsilane,followed by bromination with NBS.

Abstract:The exhaustive trichlorosilylation of hexachloro-1,3-butadiene was achieved in one step by using a mixture of Si2 Cl6 and [nBu4 N]Cl (7:2 equiv) as the silylation reagent. The corresponding butadiene dianion salt [nBu4 N]2 [1] was isolated in 36 % yield after recrystallization. The negative charges of [1]2- are mainly delocalized across its two carbanionic (Cl3 Si)2 C termini (α-effect of silicon) such that the central bond possesses largely C=C double-bond character. Upon treatment with 4 equiv of HCl, [1]2- is converted into neutral 1,2,3,4-tetrakis(trichlorosilyl)but-2-ene, 3. The Cl- acceptor AlCl3 , induces a twofold ring-closure reaction of [1]2- to form a six-membered bicycle 4 in which two silacyclobutene rings are fused along a shared C=C double bond (84 %). Compound 4, which was structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography, undergoes partial ring opening to a monocyclic silacyclobutene 2 in the presence of HCl, but is thermally stable up to at least 180 °C.

Abstract:A full account of a useful transformation from silylated 1,4-dilithio-1,3-butadienes to alpha-lithio siloles is described. These lithio siloles formed by this procedure are general, in terms of substitution patterns and synthetic methods, affording diversified silole derivatives. Notably, some structurally complex molecules, such as bridged bis-silole compounds, have been synthesized easily and successfully by applying our protocol. The structure of the alpha-lithio silole, which adopts a dimeric fashion through two lithium bridges, was confirmed by X-ray analysis. Furthermore, a possible mechanism of the skeleton rearrangements via E/Z isomerization of 1-silyl-1-lithio alkene and nucleophilic attack on silicon is proposed, and is also proved by experimental investigations.

Abstract:By use of a THF-containing trimethylsilylmethyl scandium catalyst system (C5Me4SiMe3)Sc(CH2SiMe3)2(THF)/[Ph3C][B(C6F5)4], the multi-component copolymerization of 10-bromo-1-decene (BrDC) with ethylene, propylene, and dienes has been achieved to afford a new family of bromine-functionalized polyolefins with controllable composition and high molecular weight. The copolymerization of BrDC with ethylene afforded the well-defined BrDC–ethylene copolymers with high BrDC incorporation (up to 12 mol%) and high molecular weight (Mw > 100 kg mol−1). The terpolymerization of propylene, ethylene with BrDC afforded random ethylene–propylene–BrDC terpolymers with controllable bromine content (2 ~ 11 mol%), high molecular weight (Mw > 100 kg mol−1) and low glass transition temperature (Tg = −51 °C ~ −67 °C). Moreover, the tetrapolymerization of ethylene, propylene, BrDC, and ethylidene norbornene or conjugated dienes such as isoprene and myrcene has been achieved for the first time to afford selectively the bromine-functionalized ethylene–propylene–diene rubbers containing various types of double bonds.

Abstract:Practical approaches for chemoselective mono-bromination, di-bromination, and tetra-bromination of terminal alkynes to generate 1-bromoalkynes, 1,2-dibromoalkenes, α,α-dibromoketones, and 1,1,2,2-tetrabromoalkanes based on efficient oxidative brominations mediated by a hypervalent iodine reagent have been developed. Chemoselective bromination can be realized under mild conditions by altering the bromine source. The tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB)/(diacetoxyiodo)benzene (PIDA) system is specific for mono-bromination to provide 1-bromoalkynes, while the NaBr/PIDA system is selective toward di-bromination to achieve 1,2-dibromoalkenes. When a certain amount of water was added to the NaBr/PIDA system, a different di-bromination product, α,α-dibromo ketones, was generated. Tetra-bromination of terminal alkynes provides an efficient protocol for the synthesis of 1,1,2,2-tetrabromoalkanes in a system with an excess loading of NaBr/PIDA in one pot. This bromination affords good yields (up to 99%) with excellent chemoselectivity (up to 100%). These methods can be applied to the efficient chemoselective synthesis of bromide derivatives, intermediates, and related biologically active compounds.
