Abstract:Stereodefined all-cis substituted dienols could be readily prepared in excellent yields by the direct addition of 1-bromomagnesiobutadiene or 1-lithiobutadiene derivatives with aldehydes and ketones. Depending on the nature of substituents and workup procedures. multi-substituted cyclopentadienes could be also formed in high yields from these dienols. It is interesting to note that, unlike normal alkenyl magnesium bromides, these conjugated butadienyl magnesiumbromide reagents do not react with ketones. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:To study the intramolecular Diels-Alder cycloadditon of 2H-chromen-2-one as a diene, a series of chiral N-allyl-N-benzylamides that contain a 2H-chromen-2-one moiety were designed for the synthesis of benzo[f]isoindol-1-ones via an intramolecular Diels-Alder and a subsequent retro-Diels-Alder cycloaddition with the expulsion of CO2. Both the yield (80%-89%) and absolute stereocontrol of the tandem reaction were high when an electron-withdrawing group was attached to the dienophile. The double bond in the styrene substructure remained in the products could be further derivatized by dihydroxylation. Abstract:Reactions of 1,4-dilithio-1,3-dienes with DMF afforded multiply substituted stereodefined cis,cis-2,4-diene-1,6-dials in high yields. Treatment of these 1,6-dials with LiAlH4 or RLi resulted in the formation of their corresponding 1,6-diols. These bifunctional compounds, cis,cis-2,4-diene-1,6-dials and -1,6-diols are otherwise not readily available. Further reaction of these 1,6-diols with an aldehyde catalyzed by strong acids led to the formation of oxacycles of novel structures.

Abstract:Stereo-defined 1,1,4,4-tetrahalo- and 1,1,4,4-mixed-tetrahalo-1,3-butadienes were obtained in excellent yields via desilylation–halogenation of their corresponding 1,4-bis(trimethylsilyl)-1,4-dihalo-1,3-dienes, which could be readily prepared from the zirconocene-mediated high-yield and high-regioselective cyclo-dimerization of 1-trimethylsilyl-1-alkynes followed by halogenation. These poly-functionalized gem-dihalodienes are potentially useful building blocks.

Abstract:Because of the inherent difficulty in differentiating two olefins, the development of metal-catalyzed asymmetric cyclization of 1,6-dienes remains challenging. Herein, we describe the first rhodium(III)-catalyzed asymmetric borylative cyclization of cyclohexadienone-tethered mono-, 1,1di-, and (E)-1,2-disubstituted alkenes (1,6-dienes), affording optically pure cis-bicyclic skeletons bearing three or four contiguous stereocenters with high yields (25-93%), and excellent diastereoselectivities (>20:1 dr) and enantioselectivities (90-99% ee). This mild catalytic approach is generally compatible with a wide range of functional groups, which allows several facile conversions of the cyclization products. Furthermore, on the basis of our SAESI-MS experiment and computational study, a Rh(I)/(III) catalytic cycle is proposed in this tandem reaction, and the Rh(I) active species catalyzes the overall transformation via sequential oxidative addition of B(2)pin(2), olefin insertion, cyclizing conjugate addition, and reductive elimination. The irreversible conjugate addition determines the overall regioselectivity of borylative cyclization, and the ring strain favors the formation of 5,6-bicyclic structure. This highlights the control of ring strain in diene cyclizations, which provides a useful basis for future reaction designs.

Abstract:A catalytic highly regioselective, diastereoselective, and enantioselective cyclopropanation of electron-deficient dienes and bromides via direct sulfide organocatalysis is reported. A variety of vinylcyclopropanes featuring a quaternary chiral center were synthesized in up to 99% yield and up to 98:2 enantiomeric ratio (er). These products could be facilely transformed to various interesting molecules with great structural diversity.

Abstract:Stereodefined multisubstituted 1-cyano- and 1,4-dicyano-1,3-butadiene derivatives were obtained in excellent yields of the isolated product from their corresponding monohalo and dihalobutadienes and CuCN. This reaction proceeded with high stereoselectivity and retention of the stercochemistry of the starting halobutadienes. A study of the utility of the thus-obtained 1-cyano- and 1,4-dicyano-1,3-butadiene derivatives was demonstrated by their reactions with organolithium reagents. 2H-Pyrrole or iminocyclopentadiene derivatives were formed in high yields from 1-cyano-4halo-1,3-butadienes and organolithium reagents. When 1,4-dicyano-1,3-butadienes were treated with organolithium reagents followed by trapping with electrophiles, a tandem process took place to afford 2H-pyrrolyl nitriles in excellent yields. Reduction of 1,4-dicyano-1,3-butadiene derivatives with LiAlH4 showed novel reaction patterns relative to normal nitriles.

Abstract:The conjugate addition of bromoform with 2-aryliene-2,3-dihydro-1 H -pyrrolizin-1-ones in the presence of magnesium afforded novel 2,2-dibromo-3-arylspiro[cyclopropane-1,2′-pyrrolizin]-1′(3′ H )-ones in moderate yield. The structures of all the products were characterized thoroughly by 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, infrared spectroscopy, and mass spectrum.

Abstract:Multiply substituted cyclopentadienes were formed through reactions between phenyl-substituted 1,4-dilithio-1,3-dienes such as 1b and 1c and two molecules of acyl chlorides. The phenyl substituents on the skeletons of the dilithiobutadiene derivatives played an essential role in the reaction pattern. Interestingly, when anhydrides were used, normal alkyl-substituted 1,4-dilithio-1,3-dienes such as la could also react similarly to the phenyl-substituted 1b and 1c, affording analogous types of multiply substituted cyclopentadienes in excellent isolated yields. Esters were found to afford mixtures of products when treated with la-c. When 1,4-dilithio-1,3-dienes wend treated with DMF, multiply substituted 2,4-diene-1,6-dials and/or 2,5-dihydrofuran derivatives were obtained in good yields, depending on the substitution patterns of the butadienyl skeletons. Abstract:The combination of zirconocene-mediated coupling of silylated alkynes with a protonation-desilylation or bromination-desilylation process afforded otherwise unavailable butadiene derivatives. When (E,E)-2,3-dialkyl-1,4-bis(trimethylsilyl)-1,3-butadienes were treated with 3 equiv of Br-2 in CH2Cl2, (E)-2,3-dialkyl-1,1,4,4-tetrabromo-2-butenes were obtained in excellent yields with perfect stereoselectivity.
