Abstract:For $S\subseteq \mathbb{F}^n$, consider the linear space of restrictions of degree-$d$ polynomials to $S$. The Hilbert function of $S$, denoted $\mathrm{h}_S(d,\mathbb{F})$, is the dimension of this space. We obtain a tight lower bound on the smallest value of the Hilbert function of subsets $S$ of arbitrary finite grids in $\mathbb{F}^n$ with a fixed size $|S|$. We achieve this by proving that this value coincides with a combinatorial quantity, namely the smallest number of low Hamming weight points in a down-closed set of size $|S|$.

Abstract:We investigate the initial segment complexity of random reals. Let K(σ) denote prefix-free Kolmogorov complexity. A natural measure of the relative randomness of two reals α and β is to compare complexity K(α↾n) and K(β↾n). It is well-known that a real α is 1-random iff there is a constant c such that for all n, K(α↾n)⩾n−c. We ask the question, what else can be said about the initial segment complexity of random reals. Thus, we study the fine behaviour of K(α↾n) for random α. Following work of Downey, Hirschfeldt and LaForte, we say that α⩽Kβ iff there is a constant O(1) such that for all n, K(α↾n)⩽K(β↾n)+O(1). We call the equivalence classes under this measure of relative randomness K-degrees. We give proofs that there is a random real α so that limsupnK(α↾n)−K(Ω↾n)=∞ where Ω is Chaitin's random real. One is based upon (unpublished) work of Solovay, and the other exploits a new idea. Further, based on this new idea, we prove there are uncountably many K-degrees of random reals by proving that μ({β:β⩽Kα})=0. As a corollary to the proof we can prove there is no largest K-degree. Finally we prove that if n≠m then the initial segment complexities of the natural n- and m-random sets (namely Ω∅(n−1) and Ω∅(m−1)) are different. The techniques introduced in this paper have already found a number of other applications.

Abstract:One approach to understanding the. ne structure of initial segment complexity was introduced by Downey, Hirschfeldt and LaForte. They define X <=(K) Y to mean that (for all n) K( X vertical bar n) <= K(Y vertical bar n) + O( 1). The equivalence classes under this relation are the K-degrees. We prove that if X circle plus Y is 1-random, then X and Y have no upper bound in the K-degrees (hence, no join). We also prove that n-randomness is closed upward in the K-degrees. Our main tool is another structure intended to measure the degree of randomness of real numbers: the nu L-degrees. Unlike the K-degrees, many basic properties of the nu L-degrees are easy to prove. We show that X <=(K) Y implies X <=(nu L) Y, so some results can be transferred. The reverse implication is proved to fail. The same analysis is also done for <=(C), the analogue of <=(K) for plain Kolmogorov complexity.Two other interesting results are included. First, we prove that for any Z is an element of 2(omega), a 1-random real computable from a 1-Z-random real is automatically 1-Z-random. Second, we give a plain Kolmogorov complexity characterization of 1-randomness. This characterization is related to our proof that X <=(C) Y implies X <=(nu L) Y.

Abstract:We define $\Psi$-autoreducible sets given an autoreduction procedure $\Psi$. Then, we show that for any $\Psi$, a measurable class of $\Psi$-autoreducible sets has measure zero. Using this, we show that classes of cototal, uniformly introenumerable, introenumerable, and hyper-cototal enumeration degrees all have measure zero. By analyzing the arithmetical complexity of the classes of cototal sets and cototal enumeration degrees, we show that weakly 2-random sets cannot be cototal and weakly 3-random sets cannot be of cototal enumeration degree. Then, we see that this result is optimal by showing that there exists a 1-random cototal set and a 2-random set of cototal enumeration degree. For uniformly introenumerable degrees and introenumerable degrees, we utilize $\Psi$-autoreducibility again to show the optimal result that no weakly 3-random sets can have introenumerable enumeration degree. We also show that no 1-random set can be introenumerable.

Abstract:Let $\mathfrak g$ be a reductive Lie algebra, and $m$ a positive integer. There is a natural density of irreducible representations of $\mathfrak g$, whose degrees are not divisible by $m$. For $\mathfrak g=\mathfrak{gl}_n$, this density decays exponentially to $0$ as $n \to \infty$. Similar results hold for simple Lie algebras and Lie groups, and there are versions for self-dual and orthogonal representations.

Abstract:Is there a joint distribution of $n$ random variables over the natural numbers, such that they always form an increasing sequence and whenever you take two subsets of the set of random variables of the same cardinality, their distribution is almost the same? We show that the answer is yes, but that the random variables will have to take values as large as $2^{2^{\dots ^{2^{\Theta\left(\frac{1}{\epsilon}\right)}}}}$, where $\epsilon\leq \epsilon_n$ measures how different the two distributions can be, the tower contains $n-2$ $2$'s and the constants in the $\Theta$ notation are allowed to depend on $n$. This result has an important consequence in game theory: It shows that even though you can define extensive form games that cannot be implemented on players who can tell the time, you can have implementations that approximate the game arbitrarily well.

Abstract:A result of Deza, Levin, Meesum, and Onn shows that the problem of deciding if a given sequence is the degree sequence of a 3-uniform hypergraph is NP complete. We tackle this problem in the random case and show that a random integer partition can be realized as the degree sequence of a $3$-uniform hypergraph with high probability. These results are in stark contrast with the case of graphs, where a classical result of Erdős and Gallai provides an efficient algorithm for checking if a sequence is a degree sequence of a graph and a result of Pittel shows that with high probability a random partition is not the degree sequence of a graph. By the same method, we address analogous realizability problems about high-dimensional binary contingency tables. We prove that if $(\lambda,\mu,\nu)$ are three independent random partitions then with high probability one can construct a three-dimensional binary contingency table with marginals $(\lambda,\mu,\nu)$. Conversely, if one insists that the contingency table forms a pyramid shape, then we show that with high probability one cannot construct such a contingency table. These two results confirm two conjectures of Pak and Panova.

Abstract:We study $\ell^2$ Betti numbers, coherence, and virtual fibring of random groups in the few-relator model. In particular, random groups with negative Euler characteristic are coherent, have $\ell^2$ homology concentrated in dimension 1, and embed in a virtually free-by-cyclic group with high probability. Similar results are shown with positive probability in the zero Euler characteristic case.

Abstract:We prove that there is no maximal low d.c.e degree. IntroductionA natural extension of the notion of a computably enumerable (c.e.) set is that of a d.c.e.set which is a set obtained as the difference of two c.e. sets A = W -V .Equivalently, a d.c.e set A is a set for which there exists a computable function f (x, s) so that A(x) = lim s f (x, s), f (x, 0) = 0, and ∀x|{s, f (x, s) = f (x, s + 1)}| ≤ 2. As well as being interesting in their own right, the d.c.e.Turing degrees can be studied both to give insight into the c.e. Abstract:Let $F(\sigma)=\sum_{n=1}^\infty \frac{X_n}{n^\sigma}$ be a random Dirichlet series where $(X_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ are independent standard Gaussian random variables. We compute in a quantitative form the expected number of zeros of $F(\sigma)$ in the interval $[T,\infty)$, say $\mathbb{E} N(T,\infty)$, as $T\to1/2^+$. We also estimate higher moments and with this we derive exponential tails for the probability that the number of zeros in the interval $[T,1]$, say $N(T,1)$, is large. We also consider almost sure lower and upper bounds for $N(T,\infty)$. And finally, we also prove results for another class of random Dirichlet series, e.g., when the summation is restricted to prime numbers.

Degrees of points on varieties over Henselian fields

Abstract:Let $W/K$ be a nonempty scheme over the field of fractions of a Henselian local ring $R$. A result of Gabber, Liu and Lorenzini shows that the GCD of the set of degrees of closed points on $W$ (which is called the index of $W/K$) can be computed from data pertaining only to the special fiber of a proper regular model of $W$ over $R$. We show that the entire set of degrees of closed points on $W$ can be computed from data pertaining only to the special fiber, provided the special fiber is a strict normal crossings divisor. As a consequence we obtain an algorithm to compute the degree set of any smooth curve over a Henselian field with finite or algebraically closed residue field. Using this we show that degree sets of curves over such fields can be dramatically different than degree sets of curves over finitely generated fields. For example, while the degree set of a curve over a finitely generated field contains all sufficiently large multiples of the index, there are curves over $p$-adic fields with index $1$ whose degree set excludes all integers that are coprime to $6$.
