Abstract:A real x is Δ11-Kurtz random (Π11-Kurtz random) if it is in no closed null Δ11 set (Π11 set). We show that there is a cone of Π11-Kurtz random hyperdegrees. We characterize lowness for Δ11-Kurtz randomness as being Δ11-dominated and Δ11-semi-traceable.

Abstract:It is shown that a set is low for weakly 1-generic iff it has neither dnr nor hyperimmune Turing degree. As this notion is more general than being recursively traceable, this answers negatively a recent question on the characterization of these sets. Furthermore, it is shown that every set which is low for weakly 1-generic is also low for Kurtz-random.

Abstract:One approach to understanding the. ne structure of initial segment complexity was introduced by Downey, Hirschfeldt and LaForte. They define X <=(K) Y to mean that (for all n) K( X vertical bar n) <= K(Y vertical bar n) + O( 1). The equivalence classes under this relation are the K-degrees. We prove that if X circle plus Y is 1-random, then X and Y have no upper bound in the K-degrees (hence, no join). We also prove that n-randomness is closed upward in the K-degrees. Our main tool is another structure intended to measure the degree of randomness of real numbers: the nu L-degrees. Unlike the K-degrees, many basic properties of the nu L-degrees are easy to prove. We show that X <=(K) Y implies X <=(nu L) Y, so some results can be transferred. The reverse implication is proved to fail. The same analysis is also done for <=(C), the analogue of <=(K) for plain Kolmogorov complexity.Two other interesting results are included. First, we prove that for any Z is an element of 2(omega), a 1-random real computable from a 1-Z-random real is automatically 1-Z-random. Second, we give a plain Kolmogorov complexity characterization of 1-randomness. This characterization is related to our proof that X <=(C) Y implies X <=(nu L) Y.

Abstract:We consider the random right-angled Coxeter group whose presentation graph is an Erdos-Renyi random graph on n vertices with edge probability p=p(n). We establish that p=1/\sqrt{n} is a threshold for relative hyperbolicity of the random right-angled Coxeter group . As a key step in the proof, we determine the minimal number of pairs of generators that must commute in a right-angled Coxeter group which is not relatively hyperbolic, a result which is of independent interest.

Abstract:Let α,β∈[0,1)=R/Z such that at least one of them is irrational. It is known that the random αβ-orbits of the Bernoulli mixture of rotations of α and β by choosing them with equal probability 12 are uniformly distributed modulo 1 with probability one. Chen, Wang and Wen (2021 J. Number Theory 219 386-403) showed that the exceptional set in the probability space has full Hausdorff dimension. In this note, we prove that certain sets related to random αβ-orbits which are not dense in R/Z have Hausdorff dimension 1. Our result can be viewed as an improvement of the dimension result obtained by Chen, Wang and Wen.

A Bose-Einstein Approach to the Random Partitioning of an Integer

Abstract:Consider N equally-spaced points on a circle of circumference N. Choose at random n points out of $N$ on this circle and append clockwise an arc of integral length k to each such point. The resulting random set is made of a random number of connected components. Questions such as the evaluation of the probability of random covering and parking configurations, number and length of the gaps are addressed. They are the discrete versions of similar problems raised in the continuum. For each value of k, asymptotic results are presented when n,N both go to infinity according to two different regimes. This model may equivalently be viewed as a random partitioning problem of N items into n recipients. A grand-canonical balls in boxes approach is also supplied, giving some insight into the multiplicities of the box filling amounts or spacings. The latter model is a k-nearest neighbor random graph with N vertices and kn edges. We shall also briefly consider the covering problem in the context of a random graph model with N vertices and n (out-degree 1) edges whose endpoints are no more bound to be neighbors.

Abstract:Much is known about random right-angled Coxeter groups (i.e., right-angled Coxeter groups whose defining graphs are random graphs under the Erdös–Rényi model). In this paper, we extend this model to study random general Coxeter groups and give some results about random Coxeter groups, including some information about the homology of the nerve of a random Coxeter group and results about when random Coxeter groups are δ -hyperbolic and when they have the FC-type property.

Abstract:One of the main lines of research in algorithmic randomness is that of lowness notions. Given a randomness notion R, we ask for which sequences A does relativization to A leave R unchanged (i.e., R^A = R)? Such sequences are call low for R. This question extends to a pair of randomness notions R and S, where S is weaker: for which A is S^A still weaker than R? In the last few years, many results have characterized the sequences that are low for randomness by their low computational strength. A few results have also given measure-theoretic characterizations of low sequences. For example, Kjos-Hanssen proved that A is low for Martin-Löf randomness if and only if every A-c.e. open set of measure less than 1 can be covered by a c.e. open set of measure less than 1. In this paper, we give a series of results showing that a wide variety of lowness notions can be expressed in a similar way, i.e., via the ability to cover open sets of a certain type by open sets of some other type. This provides a unified framework that clarifies the study of lowness for randomness notions, and allows us to give simple proofs of a number of known results. We also use this framework to prove new results, including showing that the classes Low(MLR;SR) and Low(W2R;SR) coincide, answering a question of Nies. Other applications include characterizations of highness notions, a broadly applicable explanation for why low for randomness is the same as low for tests, and a simple proof that Low(W2R;S)=Low(MLR;S), where S is the class of Martin-Löf, computable, or Schnorr random sequences. The final section gives characterizations of lowness notions using summable functions and convergent measure machines instead of open covers. We finish with a simple proof of a result of Nies, that Low(MLR) = Low(MLR; CR).

Abstract:Schnorr showed that a real X is Martin-Lof random if and only if K(X (sic)n) >= n - c for some constant c and all n, where K denotes the prefix-free complexity function. Fortnow (unpublished) and Nies, Stephan and Terwijn [J. Symbolic Logic 70 (2005), 515-535] observed that the condition K(X (sic)n) >= n - c can be replaced with K(X (sic)r(n)) >= r(n) - c, for any fixed increasing computable sequence (r(n)), in this characterization. The purpose of this note is to establish the following generalisation of this fact. We show that X is Martin-Lof random if and only if there exists c for all n K(X (sic)r(n)) >= r(n) - c, where (r(n)) is any fixed pointedly X-computable sequence, in the sense that rn is computable from X in a self-delimiting way, so that at most the first r(n) bits of X are queried in the computation of r(n). On the other hand, we also show that there are reals X which are very far from being Martin-Lof random, but for which there exists some X-computable sequence (r(n)) such that for all n K(X (sic)r(n)) >= r(n).

Abstract:In this paper we study the hyperbolicity properties of a class of random groups arising as graph products associated to random graphs. Recall, that the construction of a graph product is a generalization of the constructions of right-angled Artin and Coxeter groups. We adopt the Erdos - Renyi model of a random graph and find precise threshold functions for the hyperbolicity (or relative hyperbolicity). We aslo study automorphism groups of right-angled Artin groups associated to random graphs. We show that with probability tending to one as $n\to \infty$, random right-angled Artin groups have finite outer automorphism groups, assuming that the probability parameter $p$ is constant and satisfies $0.2929 <p<1$.

Abstract:We study random knots, which we define as a triple of random periodic functions (where a random function is a random trigonometric series, \[f(\theta) = \sum_{k=1}^\infty a_k \cos (k \theta) +b_k (\sin k \theta),\] with $a_k, b_k$ are independent gaussian random variables with mean $0$ and variance $\sigma(k)^2$ - our results will depend on the functional dependence of $\sigma$ on $k.$ In particular, we show that if $\sigma(k) = k^\alpha,$ with $\alpha < -3/2,$ then the probability of getting a knot type which admits a projection with $N$ crossings, decays at least as fast as $1/N.$ The constant $3/2$ is significant, because having $\alpha < -3/2$ is exactly the condition for $f(\theta)$ to be a $C^1$ function, so our class is precisely the class of random \emph{tame} knots. We also find some suprising experimental observations on the zeros of Alexander polynomials of random knots (with slowly and non-decaying coefficients), and even more surprising observations on their coefficients. Our observations persist in other models of random knots, making it likely that the results are universal.

Abstract:In this Letter, we focus on the deterministic randomness theory. Based on Lissajous map, which is constructed by the skewed parabola map and the non-invertible nonlinearity transform, we present conditions for generating asymptotic deterministic randomness. We rectify several popular statements, such as the function xn=sin2(θTzn) cannot generate deterministic randomness, and the corresponding Lyapunov exponent is lnz, etc. In other words, we prove that such function can generate deterministic randomness only when the value of parameter z belongs to some relative prime fraction number which is larger than one. We further prove that the well-known autonomous system that has been stated to generate deterministic randomness can only act as an approximative asymptotic realizable model and any realizable models for deterministic randomness will degenerate to some special high dimensional chaotic system. Furthermore, we analyze the underlying dynamics such as the fixed point, bifurcation process, Lyapunov exponent spectrum, and symbolic dynamics, etc. in detail.

Abstract:We study the rank of the adjacency matrix A of a random Erdős‐Rényi graph G∼G(n,p). It is well known that when p=(log(n)−ω(1))/n , with high probability, A is singular. We prove that when p=ω(1/n) , with high probability, the corank of A is equal to the number of isolated vertices remaining in G after the Karp‐Sipser leaf‐removal process, which removes vertices of degree one and their unique neighbor. We prove a similar result for the random matrix B , where all entries are independent Bernoulli random variables with parameter p . Namely, we show that if H is the bipartite graph with bi‐adjacency matrix B , then the corank of B is with high probability equal to the max of the number of left isolated vertices and the number of right isolated vertices remaining after the Karp‐Sipser leaf‐removal process on H . Additionally, we show that with high probability, the k ‐core of G(n,p) is full rank for any k≥3 and p=ω(1/n) . This partially resolves a conjecture of Van Vu for p=ω(1/n) . Finally, we give an application of the techniques in this paper to gradient coding, a problem in distributed computing.

Abstract:For $S\subseteq \mathbb{F}^n$, consider the linear space of restrictions of degree-$d$ polynomials to $S$. The Hilbert function of $S$, denoted $\mathrm{h}_S(d,\mathbb{F})$, is the dimension of this space. We obtain a tight lower bound on the smallest value of the Hilbert function of subsets $S$ of arbitrary finite grids in $\mathbb{F}^n$ with a fixed size $|S|$. We achieve this by proving that this value coincides with a combinatorial quantity, namely the smallest number of low Hamming weight points in a down-closed set of size $|S|$.
