Abstract:Ultra-compact silicon photonic filters with box-like responses and high extinction ratios are proposed and demonstrated by introducing tenth-order adiabatic elliptical-microrings (AEMs) with bent directional couplers. For the AEMs, the waveguides in the non-coupling regions are wide and have a minimal bending radius, while the waveguides in the coupling regions are narrowed and have a maximal bending radius. The present silicon photonic filters based on tenth-order AEMs show a free spectral range as large as 37 nm for the first time. Even fabricated with commercial complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor-compatible 248 nm deep-ultraviolet lithography processes, the present devices show high performances with excess losses as low as & SIM;1 dB and extinction ratios as high as > 60 dB. More importantly, the present silicon photonic filters work very well all-passively without any thermal control for calibration. (C) 2022 Author(s).

Abstract:We present a 10-GHz granularity reconfigurable WDM superchannel filter in a photonic integrated circuit. The filter uses a ring-resonator-assisted tapped-delay-line topology. An example configuration with two ring resonators and four tapped delay lines provides a spectral filter with a flat-top passband, a roll-off factor of 8%, a tunable central wavelength, and a selectable free spectral range, i.e., 2x or 4x the 3-dB passband bandwidth. The device was fabricated in a silicon nitride (Si3N4/SiO2) waveguide with a chip area of 0.36 cm(2) and has a fiber-to-fiber insertion loss of 5 dB. We experimentally demonstrate the filter for selecting a subchannel from a WDM superchannel comprising 10-GHz sub-channels with 10% and zero guard bands. Owing to the infinite impulse responses of ring resonators, this filter requires a significantly smaller area and fewer tuning elements compared with designs based on only tapped-delay-line finite-impulse-response filters. This paper contributes to the creation of chip-scale all-optical WDM superchannel transceivers and reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers (ROADMs).
Thermally Tunable High-Order Microring Filters with Large Free-Spectral-range

Abstract:We propose a high-order microring filter structure based on the Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) platform for flattening filtering. This filter structure can achieve a box-like spectral response with large free-spectral-range (FSR) and high out-of-band extinction ratio (ER), which can be widely used in various fields, especially in the wavelength division multiplexing. The filter consists of two or more rings which are connected in series, with Ti electrodes added on them for thermal tuning. According to the proposed requirements of spectral bandwidth and FSR, the physical dimensions of the high-order microring filter structure can be calculated based on theoretical formulas, and we optimize them for better performance. The relationship of the coupling coefficients of each coupling zone is calculated based on the Butterworth spectral responses. Result shows that the higher-order filter has steeper rise-fall edges and a flatter top, and can be designed to achieve a larger FSR. The FSR of the fourth-order microring filter can be designed to 78.4 nm, with ER of 12.6 dB, and the insertion loss of 1.1 dB. The fluctuations at the top of the box-like spectra caused by the fabrication deviations can be compensated by applying voltages to Ti electrodes, which can change the effective refractive index of the waveguide.

Abstract:On-chip photonic filters are one of the most important elements for spectrum manipulation in various optical systems, including wavelength-division multiplexing and spectrum analysis. Currently, it is still very challenging to achieve scalable photonic filters with flexibly-designed bandwidths, low excess losses, flat tops, and ultra-wide free-spectral ranges (FSRs). Here an unprecedented silicon photonic filter is proposed and demonstrated with high performances by using apodised antisymmetric multimode subwavelength gratings (MSWGs) structures. For the present silicon photonic filter, the MSWGs enable the index engineering in the Bragg lattice, which easily manipulates the coupling coefficient, the local effective index, and the mode profile flexibly. As a result, the strong side lobes of the grating filter are efficiently suppressed, while the bandwidth can be designed flexibly and the FSR is free. The fabricated silicon photonic filter is FSR-free and shows a low excess loss of <1 dB and a high sidelobe suppression ratio of 20-40 dB.

Abstract:A dual-band optical filter based on a single microring resonator embedded with nanoholes is theoretically and experimentally demonstrated for the first time. A numerical model based on transfer matrix method is utilized to simulate the performance of this device. The coupling between the microring resonator and the Fabry-Pérot resonator formed by nanoholes gives rise to the dual-band optical filtering spectrum. In our experiment, a single microring resonator embedded with nanoholes was fabricated on a commercial 220-nm-thick-top-silicon silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. Good performance was achieved with measured extinction ratio of 9 dB, insertion loss of lower than 1 dB, and quality factor of 11900. Both experimental and simulation results are in good agreement.

Abstract:A narrow-hand silicon photonic add-drop filter is demonstrated by using phase-modulated grating-assisted contra-directional couplers (contra-DCs) on the silicon-on-insulator platform. The apodization coupling is achieved by modulating the phase of one grating in a contra-DC, while keeping the other grating uniform. As the local effective index of the gratings remains almost unchanged, the designed apodized contra-DC has a large designing flexibility and a high sidelobe suppression ratio (SLSR). To obtain a narrow bandwidth, weak coupling is designed. Single-stage and dual-stage filtering are both studied. The experimental results show that single-stage filtering device has a 3-dB bandwidth of 0.9 nm and an SLSR of 18 dB. Dual-stage filtering device has a 3-dB bandwidth of 0.5 nm and an SLSR of 23 dB. Our devices are promising for on-chip applications that require narrow bandwidths such as wavelength-division-multiplexed channel filters.

Abstract:An ultra-compact silicon bandpass filter with wide bandwidth tunability is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The filter architecture is based on a multiple micro-ring resonator-cascaded structure. A wide bandwidth tunability (from 75 to 300 GHz) can be achieved by controlling the resonant frequency of the microring resonators when a good shape factor (0.24-0.44) is held. The filter has a wide free spectral range (about 1.2 THz). The center wavelength can be tuned over several nanometers linearly. The footprint is only 0.053 mm(2). (C) 2016 Optical Society of America.

Submicrometer Radius and Highly Confined Plasmonic Ring Resonator Filters Based on Hybrid Metal-Oxide-semiconductor Waveguide.

Abstract:We numerically report the submicrometer radius (0.5 μm) and high confinement (mode area ~λ(2)/1200) plasmonic ring resonators for both all-pass and add-drop filters based on the hybrid metal-oxide-semiconductor (Ag-SiO(2)-Si) waveguide platform. The best tradeoff between the propagation length and the confinement of this hybrid plasmonic waveguide platform is also discussed and compared to the dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguide counterpart. We show that the ring resonator all-pass filter features an extinction ratio as high as 23 dB with a transmission loss of 1.5 dB, and a wide free spectral range of 168 nm with a bandwidth of 14 nm. Moreover, the demonstrated add-drop filter achieves an extinction ratio larger than 12 dB with a channel isolation between the through and drop channels of 13.5 dB at the resonant wavelength. These demonstrated plasmonic devices reveal as potential building blocks for future nanoscale electronic-photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:We report on the design and the demonstration of silicon photonic ultraflat bandpass filters with low insertion loss and high out-of-band rejection for an operation near the 1550 nm wavelength band. These filters are based on cascading low (2nd) order Ring-Assisted Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (RAMZI) filter stages. The cascade design enables high out-of-band rejection while keeping the unit cells of each stage low order to be more tolerant to fabrication imperfections. The characterization of filters shows an insertion loss of ∼1 dB, an in-band ripple of <0.1 dB, an out-of-band rejection of >50 dB for a filter 3-dB bandwidth of ∼1.1 nm, and tunable up to ∼6 nm. We also investigate the filter's spur-free dynamic range at high input optical powers, which is important for RF photonics applications, and quantify a dynamic range of >60 dB for a laser power as high as ∼11.6 mW sent to the filter. Such integrated filters are promising for applications in pump wavelength rejection in four-wave mixing photon pair generation, and in RF antenna remoting where multiple RF signals are carried on different coarse wavelengths to be separated.

Abstract:We propose a novel resonator containing an elliptical microring based on a silicon-on-insulator platform. Simulations using the three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method show that the novel elliptical microring can efficiently enhance the mode coupling between straight bus waveguides and resonator waveguides or between adjacent resonators while preserving relatively high intrinsic quality factors with large free spectral range. The proposed resonator would be an alternative choice for future high-density integrated photonic circuits.

Abstract:Broadband filters with sharp transition edges are important elements in diverse applications, including Raman and fluorescence spectral analysis, wideband wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM), and multi-octave interferometry. While the multi-layer thin-film interference broadband filter has been widely applied in various free-space optical systems, its integrated counterpart is still far from mature, which is also highly desired for constructing chip-scale miniature optical modules. In this article, we design, fabricate, and characterize an integrated broadband filter with sharp transition edges. An adiabatic coupler based on silicon nitride (SiN) and silicon oxynitride (SiON) composite waveguide is employed here. Long-pass, short-pass, band-pass, and band-stop filters can be realized in a single design of the composite waveguide coupler for a specific wavelength range, with only a difference in the SiN taper waveguide width. Experimental results with a roll-off value of larger than 0.7 dB nm−1 and a 15 dB extinction ratio (ER) are presented.

Abstract:We propose an ultracompact channel drop filter (CDF) based on photonic crystal nanobeam cavities. The conditions for implementing such an ideal CDF are derived from the temporal coupled-mode equations governing the operation of the CDF. By considering the intercoupling of the two involved nanobeam cavities, some ambiguities of the previous equivalent circuit model analysis are cleared up. Practical configurations on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) for the proposed CDF are suggested with a typical length less than 15 μm. Finite difference time domain (FDTD) method calculations show that the proposed filter can achieve drop efficiency higher than 99% without any reflection. Compared to the λ/4-shifted Bragg grating resonators based CDF, the proposed CDF is more compact, high-efficient and reflection-free. It is also easy to implement a low-power tunable filter due to the ultrahigh quality factor Q and ultrasmall modal volume V of the involved photonic crystal nanobeam cavities.

Abstract:Two ultra-compact silicon bandpass filters are proposed and partly experimentally presented. Both of them have wide bandwidth tunability. Based on the first filter (filter-I), the second filter (filter-II) was designed and has large Free Spectrum Range (FSR). Two filters share the same architecture (matrix architecture), consisting two groups of micro-ring resonator-cascade structures (simply called as micro-ring resonator in this letter). Using this matrix architecture, a wide bandwidth tunability from 75 to 300 GHz can be achieved in filter-I. Based on matrix architecture, double micro-ring resonator (MRR) were adopted and Vernier effect was used in design. It is showed both in simulation and experiment that the FSR of filter-II exceeded 35 nm (around 40 nm in simulation), which is much larger than the FSR of single MRR. Filter-II’s tunability of center wavelength in simulation covers most wavelength from 1530 to 1570 nm. The comparison of bandwidth tunability between filter-I and II reveals that adding paths in matrix architecture may be more effective than adopting high-order micro-ring resonators.

Abstract:Compact all-pass and add-drop microring resonators (radius=10 μm) integrated with grating couplers working at 2 μm wavelength are designed, fabricated, and characterized on a commercial 340-nm-thick-top-silicon silicon-on-insulator platform. They are suitable for high-volume integrated optical circuits at 2 μm wavelength as the fabrication process involved are uncomplicated and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)-process compatible, thus making them more convenient to be utilized. The performance of the grating couplers, based on four most important parameters, has been simulated and optimized. The simulation and experimental results of grating couplers show the lowest coupling loss of 4.5 dB and 6.5 Db, respectively. By utilizing the grating couplers to couple light in and out from the chip, the designed microring resonators have been tested. The experimental results of microring resonators show that an extinction ratio of 12 dB and a quality factor of 11,200 can be achieved. To the best of our knowledge, this is thus far the smallest microring resonator ever demonstrated at this wavelength.

Abstract:A viable candidate for use in silicon photonics and microwave photonics is the hybrid external cavity laser chip, which offers a high sidemode suppression ratio, ultrabroadband mode-hopping-free tuning range, and small linewidth. It requires a photonic filter device with an ultrabroadband operating bandwidth and adjustable frequency selection capability. The Vernier cascaded microring filter is a prevailing filter technique that usually ignores chromatic dispersion and will result in noticeable frequency variations, particularly over a large frequency range. Based on dispersive Si3N4 waveguides, we develop ultrabroadband Vernier cascaded microring filters and examine the impact of chromatic dispersion. For the same waveguide geometry, the filter's effective free spectral range (FSR) varies by more than 400 GHz with and without the dispersion. Furthermore, these Vernier filters, which are made of anomalous and normal dispersive waveguides respectively, exhibit mode hopping at the opposite frequency side. It leads to a sudden mode number leap and, consequently, a diversified dispersion condition for the convoluted filtering frequency. We show that this phenomenon is caused by the interplay between half of the FSR difference, and the accumulated frequency difference caused by the chromatic dispersion. Finally, the use of thermal-optical tuning enables accurate frequency tuning. Our findings offer a valuable resource for the engineering of hybrid external cavity lasers at the chip scale.
