Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a fiber-based Bessel optical trap for the simultaneous trapping of both high-refractive-index particle and a low-refractive-index particle. We obtain the Bessel beam by incident 980 nm beam into the designed integrate fiber structure, which is fabricated by coaxial splice a section of step-index multimode fiber to the single mode fiber. A high refractive index glass microsphere, which is stuck on the tip of multimode fiber, is utilized to converge the Bessel beam to produce a bright focal spot and a dark cage along the axial direction. The high-refractive-index particle and the low-refractive-index particle are trapped in the bright focal spot and the dark cage, respectively. Our simulation verifies the feasibility that particles with high refractive index and low refractive index can be trapped and manipulated at the same time. The proposed optical trap which can simultaneously trap the particles with different refractive index makes it easier to manipulate cells or molecules with different properties and explore the multi-molecule interaction, which can facilitate the research related to biology and chemistry.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate an optical trap on the basis of a normal single-mode fiber (SMF), which is used to trap two particles in the axial direction at the same time without contact based on mode division multiplexing technology. We design and manufacture a tapered fiber probe. The LP11 mode beam is excited by docking a normal SMF to a 980 nm SMF with a 2 µm offset. Then the beams of LP01 and LP11 are both transmitted in the fiber. To converge the LP11 mode beam, a SMF with a tapered end is used to produce a cage for trapping the first microparticle. This particle acts as a lens to converge the LP01 mode beam to trap the second microparticle. We verify the feasibility of trapping two particles simultaneously through simulation. With this function, the proposed optical trap is easier to manipulate different individual particles for comparison and testing, which can promote the development of the biological, biophysical, colloidal, and soft matter fields.

Abstract:The radiation force of modified circular Airy beams (MCAB) exerted on both a high-refractive-index particle and a low-refractive-index particle are analyzed in this paper. Our results show that the two kinds of particles can be simultaneously stably trapped by MCAB at different positions. Compared with the common circular Airy beams (CAB) with the same parameters, trapping forces on the two kinds of particles are greatly increased because of the enhanced abruptly autofocusing property and the appearance of hollow region in MCAB. The trapping forces can be modulated by varying parameters of MCAB, and it is important to choose appropriate parameters to trap particles in practice. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate an all-fiber Bessel optical tweezers for multiple microparticles ( yeast cells) three-dimensional (3-D) trap. To the best knowledge of us, it is the first time to achieve the 3-D stable noncontact multiple microparticles optical traps with long distance intervals by using a single all-fiber probe. The Bessel beam is produced by splicing coaxially a single-mode fiber and a step index multimode fiber. The convergence of the output Bessel beam is performed by molding the tip of the multimode fiber into a special semiellipsoid shape. The effective trapping range of the all-fiber probe is 0 to 60 mu m, which is much longer than normal single fiber optical tweezers probes. The all-fiber Bessel optical probe is convenient to integrate and suitable for the lab on the chip. The structure of this fiber probe is simple, high precision, low cost, and small size, which provides new development for biological cells experiment and operation.

Abstract:Optical forces on a nanoparticle around an absorptive dielectric nano-fiber illuminated by two linear polarized counter-propagating beams were investigated. The results show the scattering force of the two beams causes the steady trapping along the fiber and the gradient force makes the trapping in the transverse plane of the nano-fiber. By altering the intensity ratio between the two incident beams and the polarization direction of the beams, manipulation along the nano-fiber and in the transverse direction can be realized, respectively. Abstract:We present a single-core tapered-tip single fiber optical tweezers, which can trap multi-particle simultaneously. In order to test and verify its new function, finite difference time domain (FDTD) method is used to calculate and simulate. The relationship between the trapping force and the particle-parameters, such as the size, refractive index and others of particle are studied. By experimental validation, the tapered-tip single optic fiber tweezers can trap Particle 2nd after the Particle 1st trapped firmly, but can not trap Particle 3rd, which just verifies the theoretical simulation results to be right.

Abstract:We proposed and experimentally demonstrated 3-dimensional dark traps for low refractive index bio-cells using a single optical fiber Bessel beam. The Bessel beam was produced by concatenating single-mode fiber and a step index multimode fiber, which was then focused by a high refractive index glass microsphere integrated on the fiber end facet. The focused Bessel beam provided two dark fields along the axial direction, where stable trapping of low refractive index bio-cells was realized in a high refractive index liquid bath. The all-fiber and seamlessly integrated structure of the proposed scheme can find ample potential as a micro-optical probe in in situ characterization and manipulation of multiple bio-cells with refractive indices lower than that of the liquid bath.

Abstract:The radiation forces on a Rayleigh dielectric sphere induced by a focused partially coherent elegant Laguerre-Gaussian (ELG) beam are investigated by using the Rayleigh scattering theory. It is found that a focused partially coherent ELG beam with suitable mode orders can be used to trap a Rayleigh particle whose refractive index is larger or smaller than that of the ambient by varying its initial spatial coherence width. Abstract:We demonstrate an all-fiber transverse self-accelerating Bessel-like beam generator and its optical trapping application. The theoretical and experimental studies have been provided to verify these beam properties. We produce the Bessel-like beam by splicing the single-mode fiber and multimode fiber with a defined offset, and then modulating the output light beam phase by fabricating a small hemispherical-lens fiber tip, therefore the phased-modulated Bessel-like beam generates the properties of transverse self-accelerating. The transverse acceleration of the Bessel-like beam generates here is ~10−4μm−1, which is almost 100 times larger than that of the beam generates in the free-space optical circuit based on the lens. The experimental and simulated results have good consistencies. The realization of the micro particle transverse acceleration transporting with this Bessel-like beam provides a new method for micro particles to be transported in a bending trajectories. This all-fiber transverse self-accelerating Bessel-like beam generator structure is simple, with a high integration, size is small, constitutes a new development for high-precision biological cells experiments and manipulations.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a simple approach for noncontact, three-dimensional, and stable trapping of a single nanoparticle with a super-low incident laser power (0.7 mW) via the single-fiber optical tweezers. We splice a section of single-mode fiber and a section of multimode fiber to construct a Bessel-like beam, which produces narrow output laser beams. We integrate a high-refractive-index glass microsphere on the tip of the multimode fiber to focus the narrow output laser beams. The focused beams provide a nanoscale optical trap for a single nanoparticle (polystyrene sphere, diameter of 200 nm). This optical fiber probe has the advantages of high laser transmission efficiency, high spatial resolution, and minimum joule heating. The proposed approach extends the application potential of fiber-based optical manipulations, such as nanoparticle sorting, single-cell organelle analysis, and bio-sensing. Abstract:We demonstrate optical trapping and manipulation of micron-sized absorbing air-borne particles with a single focused Gaussian beam. Transportation of trapped nonspherical particles from one beam to another is realized, and the underlying mechanism for the trapping is discussed by considering the combined action of several forces. By employing a specially-designed optical bottle beam, we observe stable trapping and optical transportation of light-absorbing particles from one container to another that is less susceptible to ambient perturbation.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel approach to transport a strongly absorbing particle in an X-typed trajectory reciprocally in pure liquid glycerol based on a dual-beam optical fiber trap. We perform the X-typed light field by integrating a glass microsphere on the tip of a two-core fiber. The motion of the absorbing particle in pure liquid glycerol is dominated by the Δα-type photophoretic forces (FΔα). The incident laser power determines the direction of FΔα. Therefore, we may perform the reciprocating transport of the absorbing particle by changing and controlling the laser power. It is simple to manufacture the fiber probe and convenient to operate the transport of the microparticle. Our research expands the applications of absorbing particles in targeted drug delivery, biological sampling, and optically mediated particle clearing.
A Chip of Pulse-Laser-Assisted Dual-Beam Fiber-Optic Trap

Abstract:Compared with the single-beam gradient optical trap, the dual-beam optical trap based on micro-structure eliminates the need for complex optical alignment and offers intrinsic benefits of miniaturization and stabilization, which are crucial for developing a practical sensor. We design a monolithic chip of dual-beam fiber-optic trap which allows extremely accurate alignment of submicron scale between two counter-propagating fiber beams. Based on micromachining technology, the chip featured a V-shaped groove to align the fibers and a rectangular channel to load the particles is experimentally realized. Recent studies have demonstrated that micro-scale particles can be removed effectively from substrate by focused pulse laser beam. To acquire high trapping efficiency and better trapping stability, we propose a new loading method that combinates pulse laser with dual-beam fiber-optic trap. We have fabricated a silica miniature operating rod for initial storage of the microspheres and moved a targeted particle into the effective trapping area of the fiber-optic trap. Optical loading and trapping of a 10 μm polystyrene particle in air are demonstrated and the controllable capturing process avoids any contamination on fiber ends, which ensures the reliability of optical path. We use a microscopic imaging system and image processing method to test the static stability of the captured particle. The static stability of the microspheres is submicron, which is clearly superior to the test results in liquid environment. The rapid loading and manipulation of microspheres in optical trap is significant for its applications in optomechanics and precision force sensing. Our results pave the way for a new class of monolithic and portable optical sensor for inertial measurement.
Sub-wavelength Focused Light and Optical Trapping Application Based on Two-Mode Interference from an Optical Micro-/Nanofiber

Abstract:The ability to focus light on a subwavelength scale is essential in modern photonics. Optical microfiber-based sub-wavelength focusing will allow a miniaturized, flexible and versatile tool for many applications such as biomedical imaging and optomechanics. For a separate mode exited from an optical micro-/nanofiber endface, the photons will experience significant diffraction into the free space. This situation can be changed by incorporating two-mode interference along with the specific spatial distributions of both E-field amplitude and phase. Herein we report a novel approach to realizing sub-wavelength focusing based on the two-mode interference exited from an optical microfiber endface. By utilizing specific distributions of E-field amplitude and phase of two interacting optical modes, interference field patterns with a single focus (e.g., via a two-mode set of HE11 and HE12) or multiple foci (e.g., via a two-mode set of HE11 and HE31) can be obtained. Then, it is proved that the constructed foci will readily facilitate and selective trapping of nanoparticles. Circular polarization of optical mode is utilized in order to bring in angular symmetry of sub-wavelength focusing patterns compared with linear polarized optical modes. Our simulation results show that the smallest focal spot produced from the EH11 and HE12 mode interference has a full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of similar to 348 nm (i.e. 0.65 lambda). Such a subwavelength focusing field is applied to the optical trapping of an 85 nm-diameter polystyrene nanosphere. Further calculation reveals that the stable trapping can be fulfilled with axial and transverse trap stiffness of 11.48 pN/(mu m.W) and 64.98 pN/(mu m.W), as well as axial and transverse potential well of 101 k(B)T/W and 641 k(B)T/W via two-mode interference of HE11 and HE12. These values demonstrate the great improvement over conventional tapered fibers. Further investigations show that different foci, via a two-mode set of HE11 and HE31, exhibit unlike trap stiffness and potential wells, justifying the potential for nanoparticle size sorting. Based on the flexible all-fiber device, this subwavelength focusing strategy by tw-omode interference may find promising applications in optical manipulation, superresolution optical imaging, data storage and nanolithography.
