Abstract:An optical setup that can generate a focused light spot, with its shape tunable from a very sharp peak-centered beam to a donut-shaped dark-centered beam, is always desired in optical tweezing. This setup is now realized by incorporating an image inverting interferometer (III) and a helical phase element into a radially polarized beam generator, which enables the trapping and control of a large variety of particles with a single optical tweezing system. The performance of this system is investigated theoretically.

Abstract:Optical tweezers have developed into a versatile and widely used tool; compared with the traditional optical tweezers, optical traps built with a single optical fiber provide a more flexible solution towards compact, integrated multiple traps. But the single optical tweezers have their own short comings—the manipulation working on the micro-particles is not non-contact, because of the fabrication method of the optical fiber probe. However we propose new single fiber multi-optical tweezers which are simple, low-cost and can manipulate micro-particles in a non-contact manner and non-invasively.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a single fiber optical tweezer for particle multi-dimensional arrangement based on an optical bottle beam produced by concatenating a few-mode fiber and a step-index multimode fiber. We use the mode division multiplexing technology to produce the optical bottle beam with uneven energy distribution. The LP11 and LP21 mode beams are excited by docking a 980 nm single-mode fiber at the outlet of the light source to a few-mode fiber with a defined offset. The few-mode fiber allows LP01, LP11, and LP21 mode beams to be spread in. The optical bottle beam is focused on a high refractive index glass microsphere integrated on the fiber end. The LP01 mode beam is used to trap particles and array them in a one-dimension space (linear arrangement), the LP01 and LP11 mode beams are used to trap and array particles in a two-dimension space (planar arrangement), and the LP01, LP11, and LP21 mode beams are used to trap and array particles in a three-dimension space (solid arrangement). The proposed fiber optical tweezer is simple in structure and will allow us to examine the interaction between the cells when held in close proximity.

Abstract:A single tapered fiber optical tweezers is demonstrated experimentally based on a fused tapered fiber probe. Yeast cells immersed in water were trapped at the tip of the fiber probe and moved in 3 dimensions at a certain velocity. The trapping force, both axial and transverse, can only be attributed to the force effect of the optical field emerging from the end of the fiber probe. The output optical field was numerically simulated by using a BPM (beam propagation method) method. It is qualitatively discussed that such optical field own the ability to form a 3-D optical trap.

Abstract:A new real non-invasive two-core single fiber optical tweezers is proposed and fabricated by fiber grinding and polishing technology. The yeast cells trapping performance of this special designed truncated cone tip fiber probe is demonstrated and investigated. The distributions of the optical field emerging from the truncated cone fiber tip are simulated by Beam Prop Method. Both axial and transverse trapping forces are calculated by FDTD method. This new optical tweezers can realize truly non-invasive remote trapping and manipulating bio-cells.

Abstract:A real non-contact two-core single fiber optical tweezers is proposed. It is fabricated by the fiber grinding and polishing technology. The yeast cells trapping performance realized by this single fiber optical tweezers with a special designed truncated cone tip fiber probe is demonstrated and investigated. The distribution of the output optical field emerging from the truncated cone fiber tip is simulated by using the FDTD (finite domain time difference) method. The axial and transverse optical trapping forces are also simulated with the FDTD method. This new single fiber optical tweezers can realize truly non-contact remote optical trapping of micro particles and provides a new application for the biological and medical researching fields.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate single fiber dual-functionality optical tweezers based on a graded-index multimode fiber. By using the multi-angle fiber grinding and polishing technology, we fabricate the multimode fiber tip to be a special tapered shape, contributing to focus the outgoing beam with a large intensity gradient for the first functionality—three-dimensional contactless trapping of a microparticle. By adjusting the radial direction offset between the lead-in single mode fiber and the graded-index multimode fiber, we perform the second functionality—axial shift of the trapped microparticle with respect to the fiber tip without need of moving the fiber probe itself. It is convenient for practical applications. The theoretical and experimental results about the relationship between the radial offset and the equilibrium positions of the microparticle have the good consistency. Tailoring the trap and axial shift of the microparticle based on the graded-index multimode fiber provides convenient avenues for fiber optical tweezers applied in practical researches.

Abstract:We present an abruptly tapered twin-core fiber optical tweezers, which is fabricated by fusing and drawing the twin-core fiber (TCF). The two beams guided by the TCF, and a larger converge angle between the two beams are made due to the abrupt tapered shape. The two beams converged at the micro-lensed tip, then forming a fast divergent optical field. The microscopic particle trapping performance of this special designed tapered TCF tip is investigated. The distribution of the optical field emerging from the tapered fiber tip is simulated based on the beam propagation method (BPM). By using this two-beam combined technique, a strong enough gradient forces well is obtained for microscopic particles trapping in three-dimensional. The abruptly tapered TCF optical tweezers is rigid and easy to handle, especially useful for build-up a multi-tweezers system for trapping and manipulating micro-scale particles.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel advancement in optical manipulation by developing fiber optical tweezers (OTs) that employ a high-order Bessel-like hollow beam, enabling precise and stable trapping of nanoparticles. By splicing a 405-nm single-mode fiber (SMF) with a 1310-nm SMF and creating a parabolic-shaped tip, we have crafted a nanoscale optical trap that overcomes the diffraction limit and significantly reduces thermal disturbances. The advanced fiber OTs have been successfully tested, demonstrating their efficiency in trapping 100-nm diameter polystyrene spheres with a low average trapping power of 1.2 mW and achieving a laser intensity of 7.37x10(10) W/m(2). This performance represents a substantial improvement over conventional fiber optical tweezers. We have confirmed the system's capability for stable, three-dimensional nanoparticle manipulation through comprehensive simulations and experimental tests, showcasing its wide-ranging potential applications in biophysics, chemistry, and nanotechnology.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate an all-fiber Bessel optical tweezers for multiple microparticles ( yeast cells) three-dimensional (3-D) trap. To the best knowledge of us, it is the first time to achieve the 3-D stable noncontact multiple microparticles optical traps with long distance intervals by using a single all-fiber probe. The Bessel beam is produced by splicing coaxially a single-mode fiber and a step index multimode fiber. The convergence of the output Bessel beam is performed by molding the tip of the multimode fiber into a special semiellipsoid shape. The effective trapping range of the all-fiber probe is 0 to 60 mu m, which is much longer than normal single fiber optical tweezers probes. The all-fiber Bessel optical probe is convenient to integrate and suitable for the lab on the chip. The structure of this fiber probe is simple, high precision, low cost, and small size, which provides new development for biological cells experiment and operation.

Abstract:We present a single-core tapered-tip single fiber optical tweezers, which can trap multi-particle simultaneously. In order to test and verify its new function, finite difference time domain (FDTD) method is used to calculate and simulate. The relationship between the trapping force and the particle-parameters, such as the size, refractive index and others of particle are studied. By experimental validation, the tapered-tip single optic fiber tweezers can trap Particle 2nd after the Particle 1st trapped firmly, but can not trap Particle 3rd, which just verifies the theoretical simulation results to be right.

Abstract:A novel two-core optical fiber probe is proposed and fabricated by grinding method. The distribution of the optical field emerging from the probe was simulated using BPM method. With the probe, a single fiber optic tweezers system was constructed and successfully used to trap and rotate microscopic particles. The structure of this system is simple and compact. Abstract:We take example by the fabrication of nano-probe chemical etching process to make optical tapered fiber, and we use the semiconductor laser as the light source to design a single-fiber optical tweezers system, thus achieve the capture of yeast cells and the thrust of hollow glass beads. At the same time, we use FDTD method to simulate the force analysis of the yeast and hollow glass beads in Gaussian light field. The optical tweezers system has concise structure; the preparation of optical tweezers is simple and flexible. It's easy to achieve non-contact operation of biological cells, extended to the micro-operation of other particles and of some significance in materials and biological research field.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate numerically a kind of optical fiber tweezer based on the annular aperture array (AAA) metasurface at the end of an annular core fiber to implement multi-functional optical manipulation by using the finite-element method. The results show that the device can generate single optical potential well (OPW) and double optical potential wells by sharp-edge diffraction of the AAA metasurface under the excitation of short- and long-wavelength lights. Because the distance between the two OPWs remains constant with the incident wavelength, the double OPWs can be used for an optical stretcher. We also show that by switching the incident wavelength and optical power, the microparticle oscillation can be realized in the tunable single OPW. The device can greatly improve the optical trapping ability of single or multiple microparticles, and provides a new idea for the application of optical fiber tweezers in research on micro-nano objects such as cell surgery, DNA unwinding, and targeted drug testing.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a mode division multiplexing single fiber optical tweezers. By using this tweezers, one can trap a yeast cell and then launch it away from the fiber tip with a certain speed to a certain position without moving the optical fiber in a single fiber optical trapping apparatus. We excite both LP01 and LP11 mode beams in a same normal communication fiber core to generate the optical launching force and trapping force by molding the fiber tip into a special tapered-tip shape. A yeast cell of 6 mu m diameter is trapped and then being launched away. We construct the optical trapping and launching potential wells by controlling the power of two mode beams. This micro particle directional launching function expands new features of fiber optical tweezers based on the normal communication fiber, providing for the possibility of more practical applications in the biomedical research fields.

Abstract:In order to achieve the manipulation performance of particles and improve the integration and miniaturization of optical fiber tweezers systems, this paper proposes a flat-head taper single-hole dual-core suspended-core optical fiber tweezers structure based on the characteristics of single-hole dual-core suspended-core optical fibers. By establishing a model of the optical fiber probe's force on micrometer-sized particles according to the principle of momentum conservation and using the finite-difference time-domain method, the distribution of optical trapping forces along each axial direction and the possible influence of particle diameter on the optical trapping forces are simulated and analyzed. Additionally, the capability of the flat-head taper single-hole suspended-core optical fiber to trap particles is verified through experiments. Through analysis and validation, the flat-head taper singlehole dual-core suspended-core fiber optical tweezers with 2 mu m diameter hollow hole can achieve diverse manipulation of 2 mu m, 5 mu m, and 10 mu m polystyrene particles. This research provides new insights into the application of single-hole suspended-core optical fibers in optical fiber tweezers.

Abstract:We develop a pair of tapered-tip single fiber optical tweezers, and study its multi-trapping characteristic. The finite difference time domain method is employed to simulate the trapping force characteristic of this pair of single fiber optical tweezers, and the results show that the number of trapped particles depends on the refractive index and the size of the particles. The trapping force of this pair of tapered-tip single fiber optical tweezers is calibrated by the experimental method, and the experimental results are consistent with the theoretical calculation results. The multi-trapping capability realized by the tapered-tip single fiber optical tweezers will be practical and useful for applications in biomedical research fields.
