Abstract:Fiber optical tweezers benefit from compact structures and compatibility with fiber optic technology, however, trapping of nano-objects are rarely demonstrated. Here, we predict stable optical trapping of a 30 nm polystyrene particle using an all-dielectric coaxial optical fiber supporting an axisymmetric TEM-like mode. We demonstrate, via comprehensive finite-difference time-domain simulations, that the trapping behavior arises from a significant shift of the fiber-end-fire radiation directivity originated from the nanoparticle-induced symmetry breaking, rather than the gradient force which assumes an invariant optical field. Fabrication of the fiber involved is entirely feasible with existing techniques, such as thermal-drawn and electrospinning, and therefore can be mass-produced.

Abstract:Optical trapping has proven to be an efficient method to control particles, including biological cells, single biological macromolecules, colloidal microparticles, and nanoparticles. Multiple types of particles have been successfully trapped, leading to various applications of optical tweezers ranging from biomedical through physics to material sciences. However, precise manipulation of particles with complex composition or of sizes down to nanometer-scales can be difficult with conventional optical tweezers, and an alternative manipulation tool is desirable. Optical nanofibers, that is, fibers with a waist diameter smaller than the propagating wavelength of light, are ideal candidates for optical manipulation due to their large evanescent field that extends beyond the fiber surface. They have the added advantages of being easily connected to a fibered experimental setup, being simple to fabricate, and providing strong electric field confinement and intense magnitude of evanescent fields at the nanofiber's surface. Many different particles have been trapped, rotated, transported, and assembled with such a system. This article reviews particle trapping using optical nanofibers and highlights some challenges and future potentials of this developing topic.

Abstract:By employing a generalization of the conservation law for momentum using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method, the feasibility of using a near-field optical fibre probe to create near-field optical trapping is investigated. Numerical results indicate that the scheme is able to trap nanoparticles with diameters of tens of nanometres in a circular shape with lower laser intensity. Using the built system with a tapered metal-coated fibre probe, 120 nm polystyrene particles are trapped in a multi-circular shape with a minimum size of 400 nm. They are at a resolution of λ/7 (λ: laser wavelength) and d (d: tip diameter of fiber probe), respectively.

Abstract:We propose a method of trapping micro-particles with microfiber enhanced by Sagnac interferometer. The microfiber waist diameter is 2.24 mu m. It is single mode fiber and has relatively large evanescent wave when it works in the water based suspension with wave length of 1550nm. The amplitude of the stationary wave formed in Sagnac interferometer is enhanced. The particles trapping ability with the crest of the stationary wave is increased either. This particles trapping experiment is carried out with light power of about milli-watt and 1 mu m polystyrene microsphere. Micro-particles could be trapped in a quasi-static state.

Abstract:Optical traps formed in hollow-core fibers (HCFs) can overcome several limitations of conventional free-space optical tweezers. One of the key issues is to load particles from free space into the hollow core with high efficiency, in which process the capture dynamics of the particles in front of the HCF endface plays an important role. In this work, a comprehensive model of the trapping and capture process of the dielectric particles in front of HCF is established by taking into account the features of the fiber modes and the motional parameters of the particles. Stable capture positions are predicted based on analytical calculations of optical forces, and the dependencies of the equilibrium axial trapping position on the beam numerical aperture, the fiber core and particle diameters are provided. In addition, the trajectories and the capture dynamics of the particles are studied by solving the equation of motion for the particles under the impact of optical forces, predicting feasible parameter ranges of the initial amplitude and direction of particle launch velocity for achieving successful particle capture in front of HCF. The results can provide guidance for further improving the particle-loading efficiencies of the HCF-based optical traps, which may find applications of flying particle sensors and long-range particle binding in HCFs.

Abstract:We proposed and demonstrated a new method to trap and manipulate a strongly absorbing particle by harnessing strong Δα-type photophoretic forces in pure liquid glycerol with a focused annular beam, which was introduced by an annular core fiber optical tweezers. We performed the focused annular light field by integrating a high refractive index silica microsphere on the annular core fiber end facet. The silica microsphere, which acted as a lens, focused laser beam for trapping. We tested and calculated Δα-type photophoretic forces tendency by using the fluorescence dye method, and the simulated results were in agreement with the experimental results. The proposed optical fiber tweezers were small in size, large in capture range, simple to manipulate, and inexpensive in cost. It provided a new approach for absorbing particles trapping. Tailoring the trapping and manipulation of absorbing particles in liquid environments will open avenues for studying the special, yet-unexplored characteristics of absorbing particles.

Abstract:We propose a novel optical tweezers for particle trapping with a double-wedged shape tip in the end of a twin-core fiber by polish technique. The polishing setup and procedure are described in detail and the grinding angle theta has a relationship with the angle beta between the convergent beams for trapping particles. By calculating, the optimal angle parameter theta and beta depend on the surrounding background refractive index.

Abstract:Optical traps have emerged as powerful tools for immobilizing and manipulating small particles in three dimensions. Fiber-based optical traps (FOTs) significantly simplify optical setup by creating trapping centers with single or multiple pieces of optical fibers. In addition, they inherit the flexibility and robustness of fiber-optic systems. However, trapping 10-nm-diameter nanoparticles (NPs) using FOTs remains challenging. In this study, we model a coaxial waveguide that works in the optical regime and supports a transverse electromagnetic (TEM)-like mode for NP trapping. Single NPs at waveguide front-end break the symmetry of TEM-like guided mode and lead to high transmission efficiency at far-field, thereby strongly altering light momentum and inducing a large-scale back-action on the particle. We demonstrate, via finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations, that this FOT allows for trapping single 10-nm-diameter NPs at low power.

Abstract:Optical forces on a nanoparticle around an absorptive dielectric nano-fiber illuminated by two linear polarized counter-propagating beams were investigated. The results show the scattering force of the two beams causes the steady trapping along the fiber and the gradient force makes the trapping in the transverse plane of the nano-fiber. By altering the intensity ratio between the two incident beams and the polarization direction of the beams, manipulation along the nano-fiber and in the transverse direction can be realized, respectively. The numerical results present a new promising method to realize quasi 3-dimensional optical manipulation. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America

Abstract:The ability to focus light on a subwavelength scale is essential in modern photonics. Optical microfiber-based sub-wavelength focusing will allow a miniaturized, flexible and versatile tool for many applications such as biomedical imaging and optomechanics. For a separate mode exited from an optical micro-/nanofiber endface, the photons will experience significant diffraction into the free space. This situation can be changed by incorporating two-mode interference along with the specific spatial distributions of both E-field amplitude and phase. Herein we report a novel approach to realizing sub-wavelength focusing based on the two-mode interference exited from an optical microfiber endface. By utilizing specific distributions of E-field amplitude and phase of two interacting optical modes, interference field patterns with a single focus (e.g., via a two-mode set of HE11 and HE12) or multiple foci (e.g., via a two-mode set of HE11 and HE31) can be obtained. Then, it is proved that the constructed foci will readily facilitate and selective trapping of nanoparticles. Circular polarization of optical mode is utilized in order to bring in angular symmetry of sub-wavelength focusing patterns compared with linear polarized optical modes. Our simulation results show that the smallest focal spot produced from the EH11 and HE12 mode interference has a full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of similar to 348 nm (i.e. 0.65 lambda). Such a subwavelength focusing field is applied to the optical trapping of an 85 nm-diameter polystyrene nanosphere. Further calculation reveals that the stable trapping can be fulfilled with axial and transverse trap stiffness of 11.48 pN/(mu m.W) and 64.98 pN/(mu m.W), as well as axial and transverse potential well of 101 k(B)T/W and 641 k(B)T/W via two-mode interference of HE11 and HE12. These values demonstrate the great improvement over conventional tapered fibers. Further investigations show that different foci, via a two-mode set of HE11 and HE31, exhibit unlike trap stiffness and potential wells, justifying the potential for nanoparticle size sorting. Based on the flexible all-fiber device, this subwavelength focusing strategy by tw-omode interference may find promising applications in optical manipulation, superresolution optical imaging, data storage and nanolithography. Cleaved fiber optic double nanohole optical tweezers for trapping nanoparticles

Abstract:We demonstrate the trapping of single 20 and 40 nm polystyrene spheres at the cleaved end of a fiber optic with a double nanohole aperture in gold and without any microscope optics. An optical transmission increase of 15% indicates a trapping event for the 40 nm particle, and the jump is 2% for the 20 nm particle. This modular technique can be used to replace those used with current optical trapping setups that require complicated free space optics and frequent calibration, with one that is modular and requires no free space optics. This simple arrangement with the potential for fiber translation is of interest for future biosensor and optical nano-pipette devices.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate an optical trap on the basis of a normal single-mode fiber (SMF), which is used to trap two particles in the axial direction at the same time without contact based on mode division multiplexing technology. We design and manufacture a tapered fiber probe. The LP11 mode beam is excited by docking a normal SMF to a 980 nm SMF with a 2 µm offset. Then the beams of LP01 and LP11 are both transmitted in the fiber. To converge the LP11 mode beam, a SMF with a tapered end is used to produce a cage for trapping the first microparticle. This particle acts as a lens to converge the LP01 mode beam to trap the second microparticle. We verify the feasibility of trapping two particles simultaneously through simulation. With this function, the proposed optical trap is easier to manipulate different individual particles for comparison and testing, which can promote the development of the biological, biophysical, colloidal, and soft matter fields.

Abstract:We proposed and fabricated a fiber-based optical gun for both particle trapping and shooting. The all-fiber device is made of a coaxial core optical fiber with a center core and a coaxial circular core. The fiber has a cone-frustum-shaped tip to enable the circular core to generate a focused ring light as a trapping beam, providing a stable 3D trapping potential well. When a small particle is trapped, a Gaussian beam is launched as a shooting light at the fiber center core to push the particle away from the fiber tip along the propagation direction of the beam. Here, we find that (1) the highly focused ring field with considerably lowered focusing intensity can generate a very stable particle-trapping potential well in three dimensions and the photothermal effect is also greatly reduced due to the lower optical power requirement for trapping and (2) the shooting light with a Gaussian profile not only supplies a radiation pushing force on the small particle, but also has restrictions and guiding effects as a gun barrel to propel the small particle out of the trapping well at a high speed along the beam propagation direction. The particle shooting distance can reach several hundreds of micrometers. Transverse deviation from the optical axis can be controlled within several micrometers under disturbances of ambient fluid flow. Our proposed method extends the potential applications of fiber-based optical manipulation, e.g., microparticle sorting in biology, accurate delivery of microparticles of a drug to the target cells, and observation of drug synergism.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a simple approach for noncontact, three-dimensional, and stable trapping of a single nanoparticle with a super-low incident laser power (0.7 mW) via the single-fiber optical tweezers. We splice a section of single-mode fiber and a section of multimode fiber to construct a Bessel-like beam, which produces narrow output laser beams. We integrate a high-refractive-index glass microsphere on the tip of the multimode fiber to focus the narrow output laser beams. The focused beams provide a nanoscale optical trap for a single nanoparticle (polystyrene sphere, diameter of 200 nm). This optical fiber probe has the advantages of high laser transmission efficiency, high spatial resolution, and minimum joule heating. The proposed approach extends the application potential of fiber-based optical manipulations, such as nanoparticle sorting, single-cell organelle analysis, and bio-sensing. Abstract:Optical manipulation is a non-contact and non-destructive method to capture and manipulate micro/nano particles, biological macromolecules and cells with application of optical forces. With the rapid development of optical manipulation, various kinds of optical fiber tips have been presented and demonstrated in recent years. In this letter, a novel structure of optical fiber tip with an imbedded hollow cavity is presented. The electric field distribution of the fiber tip and the influence of cavity geometry are simulated with finite-difference time-domain method. The unique advantage is that the electric field intensity will be significantly enhanced when the fiber tip is filled with high refractive index medium in the cavity, which brings the potential to generate a three-dimensional optical trap for particles. Through experiments, we also demonstrate that the velocity of the particles driven by the optical force has a quadratic relationship with the laser power. The relationship can be used in microfluidic technology to measure the velocity of micro fluid. And the balance between the scattering force and the fluid force can be used to study non-invasive migration of particles.

Abstract:The technique of optical fiber trapping has been successfully used to manipulate small particles, while near field optical tweezers based on the sub-wavelength size fiber tip has been proposed to trap nanometric particles. With some similar physical mechanism and properties they are investigated and analyzed respectively in this paper. Firstly the optical field distributions of uncoated fiber probe with different radii of tip, from several microns down to zero, are calculated and analyzed by 3D finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. Then the metal-coated fiber probe is also discussed in the same way. In conclusion, the light from the fiber probe with the radius larger than wavelength is converged at a cometic spot, whatever with or without metal coating. When the radius of metal-coated tip is smaller than half of wavelength, the evanescent field occurs and decays rapidly. The local field enhancement dominates in the metal-coated probe if the radius is smaller.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel approach to transport a strongly absorbing particle in an X-typed trajectory reciprocally in pure liquid glycerol based on a dual-beam optical fiber trap. We perform the X-typed light field by integrating a glass microsphere on the tip of a two-core fiber. The motion of the absorbing particle in pure liquid glycerol is dominated by the Δα-type photophoretic forces (FΔα). The incident laser power determines the direction of FΔα. Therefore, we may perform the reciprocating transport of the absorbing particle by changing and controlling the laser power. It is simple to manufacture the fiber probe and convenient to operate the transport of the microparticle. Our research expands the applications of absorbing particles in targeted drug delivery, biological sampling, and optically mediated particle clearing.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a trapped yeast cell being launched away from the fiber tip with a certain speed to a certain position without moving the optical fiber in a single fiber optical trapping apparatus. We excite both LP01 and LP11 mode beams in a same normal communication fiber core to generate the optical launching force and trapping force by molding the fiber tip into a special tapered-tip shape. A yeast cell of 6μm diameter is trapped and then being launched away. We construct the optical trapping and launching potential wells by controlling the power of two mode beams. Besides that, we also build a physical model to analyze the micro particle dynamic behavior characteristics during the launching process. This micro particle directional launching function expands new features of fiber optical tweezers based on the normal communication fiber, providing for the possibility of more practical applications in the biomedical research fields.
