Abstract:An imaging system combining parallel detection and two-photon excitation is presented in this paper. In the proposed method, seven avalanche photodiodes (APD) are used in the detection path. The light is guided onto the APD sensor by a fiber bundle with seven fibers. The circular arranged fiber end faces together function as a detection array. The outer contour fiber ends deviate from optical axis center and thus obtain higher frequency information. Seven images are acquired simultaneously by the detection array. By using deconvolution and pixel reassignment to process the images acquired, both the resolution and the contrast of the final image are enhanced. The capability of image quality enhancement of the system constructed is demonstrated successfully both by theoretical simulation and experimental results.

Abstract:Scannerless time-of-flight three-dimensional imaging, the successor to raster scanning three-dimensional imaging, relies on large-scale detector arrays to obtain high pixel resolution; however, manufacturing limitations lead to a bottleneck in imaging resolution. Here, we report a methodology for laser imaging using code division multiple access, which involves three key steps. Optical encoding is carried out for a pulsed laser to generate space-time encoded beams for projection. Optical multiplexing subdivides the backscattered light signals and multiplexes them to a downscaled avalanche-photodiode array. Subpixel decoding decodes the digitized encoded full waveforms and decomposes the features of all subpixels. Accordingly, we design a prototype based on a 64-order encoder and a 4-element avalanche-photodiode array and conduct an outdoor experiment. We demonstrate that the system is capable of obtaining 256 pixels per frame in push-broom mode and reconstruct a three-dimensional image with centimetre-level lateral resolution and range precision at a distance of ∼112 m.

Abstract:What we believe is a novel method for improving confocal microscopy's resolution and contrast in 3D space is proposed. Based on a conventional confocal microscopy setup, we use an array detector composed of 32 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) to replace one point-detector, where the location offset of each PMT caused a different effective point spread function (PSF). By applying array detection and the fluorescence emission difference method of an image with a solid PSF and another with a donut-shaped PSF, we can enhance lateral resolution about 27% in real time with only one scan, and improve the axial resolving ability by about 22% simultaneously. Experimental results of both fluorescent beads and living cells are presented to verify the applicability and effectiveness of our method.

Abstract:We propose a novel imaging method that enables the enhancement of three-dimensional resolution of confocal microscopy significantly and achieve experimentally a new fluorescence emission difference method for the first time, based on the parallel detection with a detector array. Following the principles of photon reassignment in image scanning microscopy, images captured by the detector array were arranged. And by selecting appropriate reassign patterns, the imaging result with enhanced resolution can be achieved with the method of fluorescence emission difference. Two specific methods are proposed in this paper, showing that the difference between an image scanning microscopy image and a confocal image will achieve an improvement of transverse resolution by approximately 43% compared with that in confocal microscopy, and the axial resolution can also be enhanced by at least 22% experimentally and 35% theoretically. Moreover, the methods presented in this paper can improve the lateral resolution by around 10% than fluorescence emission difference and 15% than Airyscan. The mechanism of our methods is verified by numerical simulations and experimental results, and it has significant potential in biomedical applications.

Abstract:Scannerless laser three-dimensional (3D) imaging relies on large-scale detector arrays to achieve high-resolution imaging and is one of the main technologies in light detection and ranging (LIDAR). However, the high production cost and complex manufacturing process is limiting the imaging resolution. In this paper, we demonstrate a subpixel 3D imaging method based on two-dimensional (2D) encoding and decoding. First, an LED array projects 2D spatio-temporal coded light beams onto the target space. Accordingly, an optical multiplexer separates and reconstructs the backscattered signals into a small-scale avalanche photodiode (APD) array. We designed a prototype with a 16 x 16 optical encoding and a 2 x 2 APD array. The scannerless imaging reconstructs 256 pixels per frame within the distance range of 39-68 cm. Improved Coding and Decoding Algorithm for Structured Light Illumination Scanning along Two-Direction

Abstract:Multi -frequency -phase -shift structured light illumination scanning along two -direction will achieve higher robustness, but it increases time spending on scanning and computing. This paper proposes an improved coding and decoding strategy for scanning along two -direction by means of epipolar geometry. First, after scanning along vertical direction and getting unwrapped vertical phase, the temporary horizontal phase is obtained according to unwrapped vertical phase and epipolar geometry of system. Then, after scanning along vertical direction and getting wrapped horizontal phase, unwrapped horizontal phase is obtained by using temporary unwrap algorithm. Finally, a line -model is established between the camera and projector. When calculating a 3D point cloud, the intersection point of the camera line of sight and the projector line of sight is calculated, avoiding the traditional matrix inversion method and improving the point cloud calculation speed. The experimental results show that: 1) the root mean square error of final lateral phase is 4. 89 x 10-3; 2) the computation speeds of 3D point cloud after scanning along two -direction and scanning along one -direction are improved by 6. 08 times and 4. 10 times, respectively; 3) the proposed 3D point cloud reconstruction method for scanning along one -direction is within the error range of 10-11 mm compared with the traditional method.

Abstract:A method based on the subtraction of images taken under different pinhole sizes is provided to improve the lateral resolution and SNR in confocal microscopy. Theoretical analyses have been performed and a notable enhancement in lateral resolution and SNR is shown by experimental results. Subtraction parameter and pinhole size have been discussed in detail. Compared with other resolution enhancement concepts, this method is much simpler and cheaper without using strong lasers. And it well suits for real time applications. It can be easily applied to a general confocal microscope and suitable for both fluorescence and non-fluorescence sample.

Abstract:The avalanche-photodiode-array (APD-array) laser detection and ranging (LADAR) system has been continually developed owing to its superiority of nonscanning, large field of view, high sensitivity, and high precision. However, how to achieve higher-efficient detection and better integration of the LADAR system for real-time three-dimensional (3D) imaging continues to be a problem. In this study, a novel LADAR system using four linear mode APDs (LmAPDs) is developed for high-efficient detection by adopting a modulation and multiplexing technique. Furthermore, an automatic control system for the array LADAR system is proposed and designed by applying the virtual instrumentation technique. The control system aims to achieve four functions: synchronization of laser emission and rotating platform, multi-channel synchronous data acquisition, real-time Ethernet upper monitoring, and real-time signal processing and 3D visualization. The structure and principle of the complete system are described in the paper. The experimental results demonstrate that the LADAR system is capable of achieving real-time 3D imaging on an omnidirectional rotating platform under the control of the virtual instrumentation system. The automatic imaging LADAR system utilized only 4 LmAPDs to achieve 256-pixel-per-frame detection with by employing 64-bit demodulator. Moreover, the lateral resolution is similar to 15 cm and range accuracy is similar to 4 cm root-mean-square error at a distance of similar to 40 m. Published by AIP Publishing.

Abstract:The range accuracy of single-photon-array three-dimensional (3D) imaging systems is limited by the time resolution of the array detectors. We introduce a method for achieving super-resolution in 3D imaging through sub-bin delayed scanning acquisition and fusion. Its central concept involves the generation of multiple sub-bin difference histograms through sub-bin shifting. Then, these coarse time-resolution histograms are fused with multiplied averages to produce finely time-resolved detailed histograms. Finally, the arrival times of the reflected photons with sub-bin resolution are extracted from the resulting fused high-time-resolution count distribution. Compared with the sub-delayed with the fusion method added, the proposed method performs better in reducing the broadening error caused by coarsened discrete sampling and background noise error. The effectiveness of the proposed method is examined at different target distances, pulse widths, and sub-bin scales. The simulation analytical results indicate that small-scale sub-bin delays contribute to superior reconstruction outcomes for the proposed method. Specifically, implementing a sub-bin temporal resolution delay of a factor of 0.1 for a 100 ps echo pulse width substantially reduces the system ranging error by three orders of magnitude. Furthermore, Monte Carlo simulations allow to describe a low signal-to-background noise ratio (0.05) characterised by sparsely reflected photons. The proposed method demonstrates a commendable capability to simultaneously achieve wide-ranging super-resolution and denoising. This is evidenced by the detailed depth distribution information and substantial reduction of 95.60% in the mean absolute error of the reconstruction results, confirming the effectiveness of the proposed method in noisy scenarios.

Abstract:Abstract Photon-counting LiDAR using a two-dimensional (2D) array detector has the advantages of high lateral resolution and fast acquisition speed. The non-uniform intensity profile of the illumination beam and non-uniform quantum efficiency of the detectors in the 2D array deteriorate the imaging quality. Herein, we propose a photon-counting LiDAR system that uses a spatial light modulator to control the spatial intensity to compensate for both the non-uniform intensity profile of the illumination beam, and the variation in the quantum efficiency of the detectors in the 2D array. Using a 635 nm peak wavelength and 4 mW average power semiconductor laser, lab-based experiments at a 4.27 m stand-off distance were performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. Compared with the unmodulated method, the standard deviation of the intensity image of the proposed method is reduced from 0.109 to 0.089 for a whiteboard target, with an average signal photon number of 0.006 per pixel.
