Abstract:We achieve the particle size measurement based on a fiber-tweezer-based dual-beam interference approach. We may obtain the particle size information from the FSR of the interference spectrum. Our method is non-contact, real-time and label-free.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate the measurement of the particle size using an all-fibre interference approach via a single fibre tweezer with a coaxial core fibre. The coaxial core fibre has an external annular core and a centre core. The external annular core is used to trap the microparticle and the centre core sends and receives interference signals for size measurement. The reflected lights from the fibre end face and the trapped particle surface will cause interference and the particle size is obtained from the FSR of the interference spectrum. Using this interference approach, we conduct a label-free, non-contact, and real-time particle size measurement. The proposed measurement approach can be further applied in biology, medical science, and lab-on-fibre technology research.

Abstract:Single-nanoparticle detection has received tremendous interest due to its significance in fundamental physics and biological applications. Here, we demonstrate an optical nanofibre-enabled microfluidic sensor for the detection and sizing of nanoparticles. Benefitting from the strong evanescent field outside the nanofibre, a nanoparticle close to the nanofibre can scatter a portion of the field energy to the environment, resulting in a decrease in the transmitted intensity of the nanofibre. On the other hand, the narrow and shallow microfluidic channel provides a femtoliter-scale detection region, making nanoparticles flow through the detection region one by one. By real-time monitoring of the transmitted intensity of the nanofibre, the detection of a single polystyrene (PS) nanoparticle as small as 100 nm in diameter and exosomes in solution is realised. Based on a statistical analysis, the mean scattering signal is related to the size of the nanoparticle. Experimentally, a mixture of nanoparticles of different diameters (200, 500, and 1000 nm) in solution is identified. To demonstrate its potential in biological applications, high-throughput counting of yeasts using a pair of microchannels and dual-wavelength detection of fluorescently labelled nanoparticles are realised. We believe that the developed nanoparticle sensor holds great potential for the multiplexed and rapid sensing of diverse viruses. An nanofibre-enabled microfluidic sensor for detection nanoparticles which hold great potentials for sensing of diverse viruses.

Abstract:Single-nanoparticle detection and sizing is demonstrated using a nanofiber pair in an aqueous environment. The sizing of nanoparticles with a single radius (100 nm) and of mixed nanoparticles with different radii (100 nm and 170 nm) are both realized, and the experimental results agree well with predictions of Rayleigh-Gans scattering, by taking the inhomogeneous field distribution of the nanofibers into account.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a single fiber optical tweezer for particle multi-dimensional arrangement based on an optical bottle beam produced by concatenating a few-mode fiber and a step-index multimode fiber. We use the mode division multiplexing technology to produce the optical bottle beam with uneven energy distribution. The LP11 and LP21 mode beams are excited by docking a 980 nm single-mode fiber at the outlet of the light source to a few-mode fiber with a defined offset. The few-mode fiber allows LP01, LP11, and LP21 mode beams to be spread in. The optical bottle beam is focused on a high refractive index glass microsphere integrated on the fiber end. The LP01 mode beam is used to trap particles and array them in a one-dimension space (linear arrangement), the LP01 and LP11 mode beams are used to trap and array particles in a two-dimension space (planar arrangement), and the LP01, LP11, and LP21 mode beams are used to trap and array particles in a three-dimension space (solid arrangement). The proposed fiber optical tweezer is simple in structure and will allow us to examine the interaction between the cells when held in close proximity.

Abstract:Here we present and demonstrate a non-contact optical measuring method for the characterization of both the shape and size parameters of nanoparticles using optical tweezers. The measurement relies on the optical polarization and scattering of nanoparticles. For nanoparticles levitated within optical tweezers, the absolute scattering light power in a fixed detection region gives the nanoparticle size, while the scattering light pattern provides insight into the shape of nanoparticles. With prior information on the nanoparticles, particle structures can be derived only through its scattering light. The method is experimentally demonstrated using silica and polystyrene nanoparticles obtaining shape measuring results in consist with the traditional detecting method conducted in a vacuum. Moreover, the radii of the componential nanospheres derived from the method lie within the radii range obtained from electron microscopy imaging results, where the uncertainty is about ±3.5%. This work provides an effective method for the identification and studying of individual nanoparticles, which is attracting growing concerns in areas, such as precise sensing, environment, and health.

Abstract:We present a single-core tapered-tip single fiber optical tweezers, which can trap multi-particle simultaneously. In order to test and verify its new function, finite difference time domain (FDTD) method is used to calculate and simulate. The relationship between the trapping force and the particle-parameters, such as the size, refractive index and others of particle are studied. By experimental validation, the tapered-tip single optic fiber tweezers can trap Particle 2nd after the Particle 1st trapped firmly, but can not trap Particle 3rd, which just verifies the theoretical simulation results to be right.

The theory analysis about multi-trapping was finished with the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. Abstract:Dynamic light scattering (DLS) is an effective tool for measuring the distribution of the size of particles. In this work, we design a novel integrated dual-angle DLS prototype which incorporates microfluidic chip and fiber optic probes to achieve measurement at high concentration and a small amount of sample consumption(30 mu l). The experimental results show that for the suspension with concentrations up to 14 mg/ml, the instrument can achieve high accuracy (relative error less than 6%). Particle size prediction at a series of concentration is calibrated using linear regression model in machine learning. Furthermore, we firstly implement dual angle on-line measurement in the fiber DLS system with microfluidic chip. The experiment results show improved repeatability of dual-angle DLS when compared with single-angle DLS measurement.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose, to the best of our knowledge, a novel method of simultaneously detecting and evaluating the location and size of particles from a compression particle interferogram. The 2D position of the particle can be determined with high accuracy, as evaluated by the unidirectional gradient-match with the conjoint to centroid method. The fast-Rife method provides sub-pixel accuracy and high speed for estimating the fringe frequency from the Fourier spectrum of a particle interferogram. The capability mentioned above is well verified using synthetic and experimental data. The computational load falls almost 50%, and the relative error of the measured particle diameter is less than 1.12% for homogeneous solutions of polystyrene spheres of 50 µm and 70 µm. The results demonstrate that the method presented here is considerably promising for its application to a high-density particle field, such as spray, in accurately measuring both the particle size and its location.

Abstract:We report on a method of measuring the stiffness in photophoretic force tweezers in air by using an experimental configuration with two counter-propagating hollow beams. By setting the optical traps of both beams in the same focal plane of the camera, we are able to record the flight procedure of a trapped particle into the other trap after the initial trapping beam is switched off. Then, the stiffness of optical trap can be obtained by fitting the relationship of particle position vs time during the flight procedure. It is found that the measurement is tolerant to the distance between the traps and laser power variation. In addition, the measured stiffness is demonstrated applicable in determining the size of aerosol particles. The reliable method provided in this work is not only useful in studying the physical behavior of signal particle under atmosphere condition but also meaningful in the applications of aerosol studies, such as in situ aerosol characterization and the local surrounding environment sensing.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate single fiber dual-functionality optical tweezers based on a graded-index multimode fiber. By using the multi-angle fiber grinding and polishing technology, we fabricate the multimode fiber tip to be a special tapered shape, contributing to focus the outgoing beam with a large intensity gradient for the first functionality—three-dimensional contactless trapping of a microparticle. By adjusting the radial direction offset between the lead-in single mode fiber and the graded-index multimode fiber, we perform the second functionality—axial shift of the trapped microparticle with respect to the fiber tip without need of moving the fiber probe itself. It is convenient for practical applications. The theoretical and experimental results about the relationship between the radial offset and the equilibrium positions of the microparticle have the good consistency. Tailoring the trap and axial shift of the microparticle based on the graded-index multimode fiber provides convenient avenues for fiber optical tweezers applied in practical researches.

Abstract:We develop a pair of tapered-tip single fiber optical tweezers, and study its multi-trapping characteristic. The finite difference time domain method is employed to simulate the trapping force characteristic of this pair of single fiber optical tweezers, and the results show that the number of trapped particles depends on the refractive index and the size of the particles. The trapping force of this pair of tapered-tip single fiber optical tweezers is calibrated by the experimental method, and the experimental results are consistent with the theoretical calculation results. The multi-trapping capability realized by the tapered-tip single fiber optical tweezers will be practical and useful for applications in biomedical research fields.

Abstract:A novel single tapered fiber optical tweezers is proposed and fabricated by heating and drawing technology. The microscopic particle tapping performance of this special designed tapered fiber probe is demonstrated and investigated. The distribution of the optical field emerging from the tapered fiber tip is numerically calculated based on the beam propagation method. The trapping force FDTD analysis results, both axial and transverse, are also given.

Abstract:A high-stability optical tweezers equipped with a high-precision measurement system of displacement and force is set up. The results show that this combination can be used to carry out quantitative measurements of small displacements and forces for micron-sized spheres. The precision of measurements has reached nanometers and piconewtons, respectively.

Abstract:A new real non-invasive two-core single fiber optical tweezers is proposed and fabricated by fiber grinding and polishing technology. The yeast cells trapping performance of this special designed truncated cone tip fiber probe is demonstrated and investigated. The distributions of the optical field emerging from the truncated cone fiber tip are simulated by Beam Prop Method. Both axial and transverse trapping forces are calculated by FDTD method. This new optical tweezers can realize truly non-invasive remote trapping and manipulating bio-cells.

Abstract:We set up a system of multiple optical tweezers based on a spatial light modulator, and measured the displacement and optical force of the trapped particles simultaneously. All of the trapped particles can be clearly imaged in three dimensions by several CCDs. The displacement is obtained by calculating the gray weighted centroid in the trapped particle's image. The stiffness of the trapped particles in the optical traps is measured by oscillating the sample stage in a triangular wave based on Stokes fluid dynamics. The optical force of each trapped particle can be calculated by the measured displacement and stiffness.
