Abstract:A three-dimensional model was established to investigate the profile and immersion depth of a consumable electrode under unstable conditions. The electrode has transformed from the flat bottom to the cone shape bottom, and the immersion depth increased slightly at the start stage before decreasing continually, which was related to the unstable relation between the melting rate and the descending velocity. Besides, the distribution of the Joule heat along with space and time was discussed. The spatial distribution of the Joule heat was closely contributed by electrode profile and droplet dripping. The Joule heat was concentrated at the brim of the cylinder electrode which was below the center of the cone bottom of the electrode. Also, the existence of droplets slowed the drop of electrical potential, hence decreasing the Joule heat. The total Joule heat in the slag pool gradually declined at first and then increased with dramatic fluctuation, which was caused by the change of the immersion depth. The variation of the total Joule heat in the slag pool with time showed that the total Joule heat decreased slowly in the initial stage of melting, and then raised slightly after the droplets formed, but the fluctuation was violent. The average total Joule heat in the slag decreased with the increase of the immersion depth. The quantitative analysis showed that the slag under the electrode can be equivalent to a whole resistance in the electroslag remelting process. The Joule heat generated in the slag pool was inversely proportional to the cross-sectional area of the electroslag ingot and directly proportional to the electrode spacing under a certain smelting current and slag conductivity.
