Abstract:Real-time 3-D acoustical imaging technique is a key advance to broaden the scope and enhance the feasibility of underwater missions. In this paper, a real-time 3-D underwater acoustical imaging system to handle the actual tasks under a narrowband excitation is presented. The system consists of three parts: a transmitter, a receiving hydrophone array, and a signal processor. In this system, a distributed and parallel subarray (DPS) beamforming algorithm is proposed to process the acquired signals from a scene placed in the far field. The DPS beamforming algorithm is an approximate method for the sonar signal processing with an advantageous computational efficiency. The direct method (DM) and fast Fourier transform (FFT) beamforming are compared with DPS beamforming for the memory and computational requirements. Based on this algorithm, a prototype was developed, which has been extensively employed in the lake and sea trials. The trials demonstrate that the system can achieve the 3-D imaging of the scene and meet the real-time requirement of the underwater operations.

Abstract:Underwater acoustic sensing based on the Distributed Networked Underwater Sensors (DNUS) system is envisioned as an effective and energy-efficient approach for oceangraphic monitoring over large area. In this paper, we summarize the main challenges for the distributed underwater sensing based on the DNUS and the impact of the main parameters on the system performance. Based on the requirement of the local measurement exchange in existing distributed tomographic inversion algorithms, we proposed the new direction on integrating communication and signal processing for distributed underwater sensing.
A robust super-resolution approach with sparsity constraint for near-field wideband acoustic imaging

Abstract:Acoustic source imaging has nowadays been widely used in source localization and separation. In this paper, based on the deconvolution methods (DAMAS), we propose a robust super-resolution approach with sparsity constraint (SC-RDAMAS) to estimate both the positions and powers of the sources, as well as the noise variance in low Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) situation. For effectively applying sparsity constraint, we explore a better initialization of source number to determine the bound of total source powers. By simulations and real data, we show that our SC-RDAMAS can obtain more accurate estimations of source positions and averaging powers, and can be more robust to strong noise interference, by comparison with the state of the art methods: the Beamforming, DAMAS, DAMAS with sparsity constraint (SC-DAMAS) and the Covariance Matrix Fitting (CMF) method. Indeed the computation burden of the proposed method is much lower than the CMF, so that our SC-RDAMAS is more applicable to scan the large region with super resolutions.

Abstract:Single-carrier frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE) is a promising technique for coherent underwater acoustic communications. The method has a lower peak-to-average power ratio than orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) and is more resistant to frequency offset. In this work, SC-FDE performance is evaluated using data collected during the 2009 Cooperative Array Performance Experiment (CAPEx09) that took place near Seattle, WA, USA. CAPEx09 had two densely populated vertical receiving arrays and a highly refractive environment, features that make it suitable for examining issues related to sensor positioning in range and depth. Two-channel equalization results show only a weak dependence on the spacing between the two sensors. Communications performance is interpreted in terms of relevant propagation physics, including acoustic ducting and rough surface scattering. The implications for undersea acoustic networks are discussed.

Abstract:In this Letter, high sensitivity and large measurable range distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) based on sub-chirped-pulse extraction algorithm (SPEA) in time domain and dechirp operation is proposed; moreover, Rayleigh-enhanced fiber is used to further improve the quality of Rayleigh scattering (RS) signal. In the proof-of-concept experiment, the RS pattern with 60 µɛ strain range is generated during a single-shot measurement, while 80.7 p ε / H z strain sensitivity and 28.4 cm spatial resolution are achieved on 920 m fiber.

Abstract:The rapidly advancing technology of distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) has profoundly impacted the field of underwater geophysics. Our study investigates the effectiveness of DAS in underwater geological stability monitoring, with a particular focus on microseismic monitoring in the Xinfengjiang reservoir. The 6.2 km long acquisition setup, covering both land and reservoir bottom, was verified using temporary shore-based short-period seismometers to ensure reliable data acquisition in various environments. Higher background noise was observed on the land section compared with the lakebed section during the day, whereas both sections exhibited similar noise levels at night. We confirmed that the DAS system was capable of detecting distant microseismic events, some of which were previously unreported. These detections exhibited temporal and phase consistency with neighboring seismometers. Comparison of signal-to-noise ratios indicates that the lakebed section demonstrates higher sensitivity. This system delivers cost-effective performance through natural settling, negating the requirement for costly embedding methods. Moreover, the DAS system identified “comet-like” small-scale signals on the lakebed that had eluded shore-based seismometers. This exemplifies the exceptional high-density and high-resolution capabilities of DAS technology in both aquatic and terrestrial environments. This study underscores the pivotal role of the DAS technology in conducting underwater microseismic monitoring, real-time seismic monitoring, seismic mechanism research, and earthquake hazard assessment.

Abstract:Distributed fiber acoustic sensing (DAS) has appealing application prospects. DAS is usually based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) and similar techniques, which can sense the phase change of in-fiber Rayleigh backscattering light caused by the outside perturbation. Coherent detection, which can recover both the intensity and phase of backscattered light, has contributed to a rapid development of DAS technologies in recent years. In this paper, the major advancements of DAS coherent detection from UESTC group are discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate the feasibility of ultra-high-performance distributed acoustic sensor (DAS). This sensing system interrogates ultra-weak fiber Brag grating (UWFBG) array using Φ-OTDR with coherent detection technology. An analysis on improving the sensitivity of Φ-OTDR with UWFBG array used in the system is given, which explain the higher sensitivity of the new scheme and give a guidance of setting up distributed acoustic sensor systems with different parameters. Furthermore, a phase noise compensated system is proposed to reduce the influence of 1/f noise, which is the main limitation when coherent detection is used in a high sensitivity system. In the experiment, we verified the theoretical analysis on system sensitivity. A high performance system with a sensitivity of 3.84 pε/√(Hz) @ 10-2500 Hz, a sensing range of 20 km and a spatial resolution of 10 m is demonstrated to show the advantage of the novel system.

Abstract:Highly sensitive distributed acoustic sensor is required in various practical applications. In this article, an ultra high sensitive quasi distributed acoustic sensor based on coherent detection and cylindrical transducer is proposed and demonstrated. As the acoustic sensing medium, distributed microstructured optical fiber (DMOF) is utilized to improve the signal to noise ratio (SNR) of the signal, which contains backscattering enhanced points (BEPs) along the longitudinal direction of the fiber. In order to increase the acoustic sensitivity, the hollow cylindrical structure is developed for acoustic wave transduction. In addition, coherent phase detection is adopted to achieve the high precision phase signal demodulation, and thus to realize high-fidelity recovery of the airborne sound wave. Consequently, the spatial distributed acoustic sensing can be realized, which integrates a series of high-sensitive sensing units in a single fiber. The field test results of the airborne sound detection illustrate an excellent phase sensitivity of -112.5 dB (re 1 rad/mu Pa) within the flat frequency range of 500 Hz-5 kHz and a peak sensitivity up to -83.7 dB (re 1 rad/mu Pa) at 80Hz. The waveform comparison between the measurement result and the standard signal shows the maximum error of only 3.07%. Besides, distributed audio signal recovery and spatial acoustic imaging are demonstrated, which can be further applied in the field of fiber distributed microphone and urban noise intensity holography.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a distributed and parallel subarray beamforming (DPS) algorithm for performing underwater real-time 3-D acoustic imaging. The principle idea of this algorithm is that the full populated sensor array is subdivided into two stage distributed subarrays and the beamforming is carried out in parallel for each stage subarray. The proposed algorithm overcomes the problems of massive computational load affecting the engineering applications of the conventional beamforming techniques, while achieving the similar resolutions. The memory requirement obtained with the proposed algorithm is reduced by four orders of magnitude and the computational requirement is reduced by two orders of magnitude when compared with the conventional beamforming (CBF). The simulation and the comparisons illustrate the results and the efficiency of the algorithm.

Abstract:In this letter, to break through the response bandwidth limit of quasi-distributed acoustic sensing system, a novel interleaved chirped pulses (ICP) approach is proposed on the basis of pulse compression Phi-OTDR with coherent detection. As shown in the theoretical analysis, for ultra-weak fiber Bragg grating (UWFBG) array with fixed positions and intervals, the space between any two FBGs can be used to multiplex probing pulses, without occupying extra detection bandwidth. The cross-correlation peak of probe pulses can be separated from each other in the time domain with matched filtering. By injecting probe pulses which are evenly interleaved as positive-chirped and negative-chirped, crosstalk of the cross-correlation peaks can be suppressed. In the proof-of-principle experiment, the response bandwidth is 3 times as that of the traditional single pulse probing scheme, all with the same detection bandwidth; 860 m sensing range with 166.4 kHz response bandwidth has been achieved, with 5 m spatial resolution and 1.8 p epsilon/root Hz strain sensitivity.

Abstract:We demonstrate an enhanced distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) system based on ultra-weak fiber Bragg grating (UWFBG) array and self-heterodyne detection. By using the interaction process between nearby UWFBGs, the distribution of acoustic field along the sensing fiber could be fully captured. Self-heterodyne detection was applied, leading to much lower noise density level for the proposed sensing system. The experimental results have shown that the acoustic field could be reconstructed with high fidelity even at the rear end of a 42 km long sensing fiber with the spatial resolution of 11.7 m. The proposed sensing system has a linear intensity response of R2 = 0.9988, while the peak-to-peak value (VPP) of dynamic strain was tuned from 9.28 nϵ to 176.96 nϵ. The root-mean-square (RMS) measurement error of our sensing system was less than 1.32 nϵ. The frequency response range of the proposed system was from 8 Hz to 1 kHz. The proposed sensing system offered a promising solution for the performance enhancement of DAS system that could achieve high spatial resolution, high sensing sensitivity, long sensing distance and dead zone free measurement at the same time.

Abstract:To monitor the health of the fiber network and its ambient environment in densely populated access/metro network areas, in this Letter, an endogenous distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) has been proposed and achieved in a coherent digital subcarrier multiplexing (DSCM) system. Rather than specially allocating a sensing probe in general integrated communication and sensing schemes, the fractional Fourier transformed (FrFT) training sequence (TS) designated for time/frequency synchronization in DSCM coherent communications has been repurposed for sensing. While achieving excellent synchronization performance of communication, the FrFT-based TS can also be concurrently utilized to perform distributed vibration sensing. Experimental results demonstrate that the FrFT-based timing/frequency synchronization sequence is repurposed to achieve a DAS sensitivity of 70 p ε/Hz at a spatial resolution of 5 m, along with 100-Gb/s 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) DSCM transmission, without a loss of spectral efficiency.

Abstract:A novel distributed acoustic sensing technique is proposed that exploits both phase and amplitude of the Rayleigh backscattered light to quantify the environmental variation. The system employs a wavelength-scanning laser and an imbalanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer to acquire the reflection spectra and the phase of the detected light, respectively. Fading-free and low-frequency measurements are realized via the cross-correlation of the reflection spectra. The discrete cross-correlation is used to circumvent the nonlinear frequency sweeping of the laser. Based on the phase of the backscattered light, it is possible to quantify fast environmental variations. The whole system requires no hardware modification of the existing system and its functionality is experimentally validated. The proposed system has the potential to monitor ground motion/movement at very low frequency band like subsidence around mining areas and at high frequency band like earthquakes and vibrations induced by avalanches.
