Abstract:An ultra-high sensitive distributed microstructured optical fiber (DMOF) acoustic sensor based on coherent OTDR demodulation method and hollow cylinder transducer is presented. As a consecutive longitudinal microstructured optical fiber, the DMOF contains backscattering enhanced points which greatly improved the signal to noise ratio(SNR) of the acoustic sensing signal. Based on coherent OTDR demodulation method, the amount of phase change caused by sound pressure can be directly obtained. In order to increase the phase sensitivity, sensing fiber between two backscattering enhanced points along the DMOF is wrapped on a hollow cylinder transducer as an acoustic sensing unit. Finally, experiments on detecting sound waves in air are carried out. The results demonstrate that our fiber acoustic sensor has a flat sensitivity frequency response from 500Hz to 5kHz with a phase sensitivity of around -112dB(re rad/μPa) and a peak sensitivity of -83.7dB at 80Hz. It is noteworthy that the sensing mechanism based on the DMOF can be further extended to distributed acoustic sensing.

Abstract:The last years have witnessed the wide application of Distributed Acoustic Sensor (DAS) systems in several fields, such as submarine cable monitoring, seismic wave detection, structural health monitoring, etc. Due to their distributed measurement ability and high sensitivity, DAS systems can be employed as a promising tool for the phase sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR). However, it is also well-known that the traditional Φ-OTDR system suffers from Rayleigh backscattering (RBS) fading effects, which induce dead zones in the measurement results. Worse still, in practice it is difficult to achieve the optimum matching between spatial resolution (SR) and signal to noise ratio (SNR). Further, the overall frequency response range (FRR) of the traditional Φ-OTDR is commonly limited by the length of the fiber in order to prevent RBS signals from overlapping with each other. Additionally, it is usually difficult to reconstruct high frequency vibration signals accurately for long range monitoring. Aiming at solving these problems, we introduce frequency division multiplexing (FDM) that makes it easier to improve the system performance with less system structure changes. We propose several novel Φ-OTDR schemes based on Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM) technology to solve the above problems. Experimental results showed that the distortion induced by fading effects could be suppressed to 1.26%; when the SR of Φ-OTDR is consistent with the length of the vibration region, the SNR of the sensing system is improved by 3 dB compared to the average SNR with different SRs; vibration frequencies up to 440 kHz have been detected along 330 m artificial microstructures. Thus, the proposed sensing system offers a promising solution for the performance enhancement of DAS systems that could achieve high SNR, broadband FRR and dead zone-free measurements at the same time.

Abstract:We designed and tested a distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) that co-exists with optical communication over a two-mode fiber (TMF). In particular, we excited both linearly polarized (LP) modes, LP01 and LP11a, using a photonic lantern for simultaneous information signal transmission while collecting the backscattered Rayleigh light at the near end of the fiber to detect vibrations from a predetermined source. While transmitting data using on-off keying (OOK) or orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation schemes, the optical fiber DAS offers high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values that are always larger than the minimum acceptable 2 dB SNR. In addition, as a proof-of-concept experiment, we report parallel sensing and OFDM transmission achieving a data rate of up to 4.2 Gb/s with a bit error rate (BER) of 3.2 × 10-3.

Abstract:In order to solve fading problem and realize sub-meter spatial resolution in DAS, this paper proposes a novel configuration of time-gated digital optical frequency domain reflectometry (TGD-OFDR) based on optical intensity modulator (IM). IM has a large modulation bandwidth and the positive and negative harmonics can be fully used to suppress fading while the spatial resolution remains unchanged. In experiments, with fading suppressed, the spatial resolution of DAS is 0.8 m and the strain resolution is about 245.6 pε√Hz along the total 9.8-km sensing fiber. The response bandwidth of vibration is 5 kHz, only/limited by the fiber length.

Abstract:We demonstrate an enhanced distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) system based on ultra-weak fiber Bragg grating (UWFBG) array and self-heterodyne detection. By using the interaction process between nearby UWFBGs, the distribution of acoustic field along the sensing fiber could be fully captured. Self-heterodyne detection was applied, leading to much lower noise density level for the proposed sensing system. The experimental results have shown that the acoustic field could be reconstructed with high fidelity even at the rear end of a 42 km long sensing fiber with the spatial resolution of 11.7 m. The proposed sensing system has a linear intensity response of R2 = 0.9988, while the peak-to-peak value (VPP) of dynamic strain was tuned from 9.28 nϵ to 176.96 nϵ. The root-mean-square (RMS) measurement error of our sensing system was less than 1.32 nϵ. The frequency response range of the proposed system was from 8 Hz to 1 kHz. The proposed sensing system offered a promising solution for the performance enhancement of DAS system that could achieve high spatial resolution, high sensing sensitivity, long sensing distance and dead zone free measurement at the same time.

Abstract:As an important branch of phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry ( $\Phi $ -OTDR), quasi-distributed acoustic sensing (QDAS) has attracted lots of attention due to its unique advantages. Varieties of scenarios require the capability of detecting signals in different frequency ranges. However, the influence of low-frequency noises limits the ability to sense low-frequency perturbations; sensing bandwidth is limited by the round-trip repetition in the QDAS system. In this article, a high performance QDAS scheme based on orthogonal codes and empirical mode decomposition (EMD) algorithm is proposed. EMD is utilized to extract and eliminate the low-frequency noises including frequency drift of laser, realizing sensing signals at the level of Hz. Importantly, to break the trade-off, massive orthogonal codes on the same carrier (OCSC) are generated and used to multiplex sensing channels, resulting in a significant enhancement in spectral efficiency. In addition, as a kind of optical pulse coding (OPC), OCSC can improve the signal to noise ratio (SNR) for long-distance sensing requirement without sacrificing spatial resolution. As a result, the influence of low-frequency noises is first eliminated in OPC QDAS system, and the sensing bandwidth is enlarged by 20 times compared with conventional single-pulse interrogation scheme. The frequency-band detection range of 1 Hz–10 kHz is realized at the far end of 99.4 km fiber, without consuming extra frequency-domain resources and distributed amplification; the noise level is about $33 {p}\varepsilon /\sqrt {\text {Hz}}$ in the range of 20 Hz-10 kHz, with 10 m spatial resolution.

Abstract:<p>We propose a multipath distributed acoustic sensing (MP-DAS) system based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) and frequency division multiplexing (FDM) technique. With FDM introduced to Φ-OTDR, simultaneously monitoring of multipath vibration is realized with flexible functionality. In the proposed MP-DAS system, the parameters of each path can be adjusted individually according to the path's specific monitoring requirement. A dual path Φ-OTDR system with 1 km and 22 km measurement distance is demonstrated in the experiment. Through heterodyne detection and FDM technique, both amplitude and phase information are obtained for event locating and vibration sensing in each of the two paths, with a spatial resolution of 5 m and 10 m respectively. With changing optical power and pulse width of one path, its influence on the other path is discussed and analyzed. This proposed MP-DSA system based on FDM technique provides an efficient and cost-effective way for upgrading a conventional single DAS into an integrated DAS network, which shows great potential in many applications such as modern city civil structure monitoring with different demands.</p>

Abstract:Fiber-optic distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) has proven to be a revolutionary technology for the detection of seismic and acoustic waves with ultralarge scale and ultrahigh sensitivity, and is widely used in oil/gas industry and intrusion monitoring. Nowadays, the single-frequency laser source in DAS becomes one of the bottlenecks limiting its advance. Here, we report a dual-comb–based coherently parallel DAS concept, enabling linear superposition of sensing signals scaling with the comb-line number to result in unprecedented sensitivity enhancement, straightforward fading suppression, and high-power Brillouin-free transmission that can extend the detection distance considerably. Leveraging 10-line comb pairs, a world-class detection limit of 560 fε/√Hz@1 kHz with 5 m spatial resolution is achieved. Such a combination of dual-comb metrology and DAS technology may open an era of extremely sensitive DAS at the fε/√Hz level, leading to the creation of next-generation distributed geophones and sonars.

Abstract:Fiber-optic distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) technology has many outstanding advantages, such as long sensing range, high detection efficiency, wide frequency response, low operation cost, long working lifetime, et al. It can be anticipated that DAS has great potential to become a next generation technology of long-distance vibration and acoustic wave detection in the future. However, despite the rapid development of DAS technology, the sensitivity of optical cable is still a main limitation in terms of the applications of DAS technology. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a sensitivity-enhanced optical cable with smaller diameter, lighter weight, and greater flexibility than conventional cables. This novel cable is experimentally tested both in lab and field. The results show that the acoustic sensitivity of the cable has been significantly improved by ~10 times, comparing with a rigid cable that has much higher reflection and attenuation of acoustic waves. Hence, such a sensitivity-enhanced cable could be one of the best candidates for DAS applications as a general sensing cable. In addition, we found that the experimental results are in agreement with our theoretical analysis, providing a guidance for design of sensitivity-enhanced cables. Finally, this cable has been successfully demonstrated in the field test of borehole vertical seismic profiling (VSP), and good performances have been achieved. The perfect combination of sensitivity-enhanced cables and high-performance DAS systems would provide a powerful tool for many DAS applications.

Abstract:Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) using submarine optical cables is a new marine technology for large-scale underwater data transmission and data collection of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). However, the shallow water surroundings and the mobility of AUVs cause severe multipath propagation and Doppler effect, resulting in sound signal distortion in the delay and Doppler domains when sound waves reach the submarine optical cable. In this paper, we propose an underwater acoustic equalization method based on channel shortening to mitigate these issues. We use frequency-domain decision feedback equalization (FD-DFE) for channel shortening to suppress multipaths and lower the Doppler spread of the channel, followed by time-domain decision feedback equalization based on recursive least square (RLS-DFE) to eliminate residual delay and Doppler spreads. This dual decision feedback equalization (DDFE) approach combines block- and symbol-wise equalization and demonstrates robustness through numerical simulations. In the reservoir experiment, the DDFE method increased the output signal-to-noise ratio by an average 4.5 dB compared to the traditional method for medium-rate communications at 3 kbps, and reduced the bit error rate by 60%.

Abstract:The synthesis and excretion of newly formed proteins in the principal cells of the head, body, and tail of the epididymis were studied by quantitative autoradiography in light and electron microscopy. Adult mice were killed from 5 min to 6 hr after intravenous injection of tritiated leucine, lysine, and arginine. The labels were taken up early and in greater amounts in the principal cells of the head. Radioactivity decreased in the cells of all three segments throughout the first hour following administration of the tracers. Thereafter, it increased in the lumen. High-resolution analysis showed successive peaks of relative concentration of the labels over the endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, and apical plasma membrane, thus confirming that protein synthesis and excretion follow the usual pathway in the principal cells all along the epididymis. However, since a radioactivity peak occurred as early as 15 min over the apical membrane of cells in the head, it is likely that part of the endoplasmic reticulum-canalicular and poor in polysomes-is involved independently in the synthesis and rapid transport of newly formed proteins.

Abstract:Optical fiber distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) based on phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (φ-OTDR) is in great demand in many long-distance application fields, such as railway and pipeline safety monitoring. However, the DAS measurement distance is limited by the transmission loss of optical fiber and ultralow backscattering power. In this paper, a DAS system based on multispan relay amplification is proposed, where the bidirectional erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) is designed as a relay module to amplify both the probe light and the backscattering light. In the theoretical noise model, the parameters of our system are carefully analyzed and optimized for a longer sensing distance, including the extinction ratio (ER), span number, span length, and gain of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers. The numerical simulation shows that a bidirectional EDFA relay DAS system can detect signals over 2500 km, as long as the span number is set to be more than 100. To verify the effectiveness of the scheme, a six-span coherent-detection-based DAS system with an optimal design was established, where the cascaded acoustic-optic modulators (AOMs) were used for a high ER of 104 dB. The results demonstrate that the signal at the far end of 300.2 km can be detected and recovered, achieving a high signal-to-noise ratio of 59.6 dB and a high strain resolution of 51.8pε/ Hz at 50 Hz with a 20 m spatial resolution. This is, to the best of our knowledge, a superior DAS sensing distance with such a high strain resolution.

Abstract:Distributed acoustic sensing based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) has been widely used in many fields. Phase demodulation of the Φ-OTDR signal is essential for undistorted acoustic measurement. Digital coherent detection is a universal method to implement phase demodulation, but it may cause severe computational burden. In this paper, analog I/Q demodulation is introduced into the Φ-OTDR based DAS system to solve this problem, which can directly obtain the I and Q components of the beat signal without any digital processing, meaning that the computational cost can be sharply reduced. Besides, the sampling frequency of the data acquisition card can theoretically be lower than the beat frequency as the spectrum aliasing would not affect the demodulation results, thus further reducing the data volume of the system. Experimental results show that the proposed DAS system can demodulate the phase signal with good linearity and wide frequency response range. It can also adequately recover the sound signal sensed by the optical fiber, indicating that it can be a promising solution for computational-cost-sensitive distributed acoustic sensing applications.

Abstract:Abstract Distributed acoustic sensors (DAS) can monitor mechanical vibrations along thousands independent locations using an optical fibre. The measured acoustic waveform highly varies along the sensing fibre due to the intrinsic uneven DAS longitudinal response and distortions originated during mechanical wave propagation. Here, we propose a fully blind method based on near-field acoustic array processing that considers the nonuniform response of DAS channels and can be used with any optical fibre positioning geometry having angular diversity. With no source and fibre location information, the method can reduce signal distortions and provide relevant signal-to-noise ratio enhancement through sparse beamforming spatial filtering. The method also allows the localisation of the two-dimensional spatial coordinates of acoustic sources, requiring no specific fibre installation design. The method offers distributed analysis capabilities of the entire acoustic field outside the sensing fibre, enabling DAS systems to characterise vibration sources placed in areas far from the optical fibre.

Abstract:A novel ultra-long distributed vibration sensing (DVS) system using forward transmission and coherent detection is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In the proposed scheme, a pair of multi-span optical fibers are deployed for sensing, and a loop-back configuration is used by connecting the two fibers at the far end. The homodyne coherent detection is used to retrieve the phase and state-of-polarization (SOP) fluctuations caused by a vibration while the localization of the vibration is realized by tracking the phase changes along the two fibers. The proposed scheme has the advantage of high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and ultra-long sensing range due to the nature of forward transmission and coherent detection. In addition, using forward rather than backward scattering allows detection of high frequency vibration signal over a long sensing range. More than 50dB sensing SNR can be obtained after long-haul transmission. Meanwhile, localization of 400 Hz, 1 kHz and 10 kHz vibrations has been experimentally demonstrated with a spatial resolution of less than 50 m over a total of 1008 km sensing fiber. The sensing length can be further extended to even trans-oceanic distances using more fiber spans and erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs), making it a promising candidate for proactive fault detection and localization in long-haul and ultra-long-haul fiber links.

Abstract:In the domain of optical fiber distributed acoustic sensing, the persistent challenge of extending sensing distances while concurrently improving spatial resolution and frequency response range has been a complex endeavor. The amalgamation of pulse compression and frequency division multiplexing methodologies has provided certain advantages. Nevertheless, this approach is accompanied by the drawback of significant bandwidth utilization and amplified hardware investments. This study introduces an innovative distributed optical fiber acoustic sensing system aimed at optimizing the efficient utilization of spectral resources by combining compressed pulses and frequency division multiplexing. The system continuously injects non-linear frequency modulation detection pulses spanning various frequency ranges. The incorporation of non-uniform frequency division multiplexing augments the vibration frequency response spectrum. Additionally, nonlinear frequency modulation adeptly reduces crosstalk and enhances sidelobe suppression, all while maintaining a favorable signal-to-noise ratio. Consequently, this methodology substantially advances the spatial resolution of the sensing system. Experimental validation encompassed the multiplexing of eight frequencies within a 120 MHz bandwidth. The results illustrate a spatial resolution of approximately 5 m and an expanded frequency response range extending from 1 to 20 kHz across a 16.3 km optical fiber. This achievement not only enhances spectral resource utilization but also reduces hardware costs, making the system even more suitable for practical engineering applications.

Abstract:We propose a novel distributed acoustic sensor (DAS) based on a dual-wavelength ultra-weak fiber Bragg grating (UWFBG) array. The UWFBGs in the array have two wavelengths that are arranged alternately. Two doublepulses with different wavelengths and staggered launching times are used for sensing in the UWFBG array. This approach successfully overcomes the trade-off between spatial resolution and sensing distance in the traditional UWFBG-based DAS and effectively doubles the maximum achievable sampling rate constrained by the sensing distance. The crosstalk of different wavelengths is avoided by time division multiplexing. Comprehensive analyses and simulations are conducted to validate the performance enhancements, compared to the traditional method. In our proof-of-concept experiments, employing a 2 km alternating arranged dual-wavelength UWFBG array, we achieve a spatial resolution enhancement from 10 m to 5 m, expand the dynamic strain measurement range from 34.2 rad to 68.2 rad, and increase the frequency response from 9 kHz to 19 kHz.
