Abstract:Integrated quantum optics becomes a consequent tendency towards practical quantum information processing. Here, we report the on-chip generation and manipulation of photonic entanglement based on reconfigurable lithium niobate waveguide circuits. By introducing periodically poled structure into the waveguide interferometer, two individual photon-pair sources with controllable phase-shift are produced and cascaded by a quantum interference, resulting in a deterministically separated identical photon pair. The state is characterized by 92.9% visibility Hong-Ou-Mandel interference. Continuous morphing from two-photon separated state to bunched state is further demonstrated by on-chip control of electro-optic phase-shift. The photon flux reaches ~1.4*10^7 pairs nm-1 mW-1. Our work presents a scenario for on-chip engineering of different photon sources and paves a way to the fully integrated quantum technologies.

Abstract:We propose a tunable on-chip micromaser using a superconducting quantumcircuit (SQC). By taking advantage of externally controllable statetransitions, a state population inversion can be achieved and preserved for thetwo working levels of the SQC and, when needed, the SQC can generate a singlephoton. We can regularly repeat these processes in each cycle when thepreviously generated photon in the cavity is decaying, so that a periodicsequence of single photons can be produced persistently. This provides acontrollable way for implementing a persistent single-photon source on amicroelectronic chip.

Abstract:The monolithic integration of optical components with different functionalities on a single semiconductor wafer requires spatially selective control of bandgap energies. We have developed a simple, post-growth technique based on quantum well intermixing using ion implantation and rapid thermal annealing, which allows multiple selective area bandgap tailoring. Waveguide absorption spectra demonstrate that the bandgap energy can be shifted as much as 90 nm without any excess loss. By depositing a SiO2 layer of different thicknesses in different regions as the implantation mask, quantum wells in different sections of a wafer can be intermixed to different degrees in a single implantation and annealing process. It has also been shown that the heavy-hole and light hole states in the quantum wells can become degenerate at a certain degree of intermixing, which allows the fabrication of polarization insensitive optical amplifiers and electro-absorptive switches. The performance of both active (laser, amplifier, modulator) and passive (waveguide) components produced using this technique will be presented.

Abstract:Quantum states of light play a pivotal role in modern science[1] and future photonic applications[2]. While impressive progress has been made in their generation and manipulation with high fidelities, the common table-top approach is reaching its limits for practical quantum applications. Since the advent of integrated quantum nanophotonics[3] different material platforms based on III-V nanostructures-, color centers-, and nonlinear waveguides[4-8] as on-chip light sources have been investigated. Each platform has unique advantages and limitations in terms of source properties, optical circuit complexity, and scaling potentials. However, all implementations face major challenges with efficient and tunable filtering of individual quantum states[4], scalable integration and deterministic multiplexing of on-demand selected quantum emitters[9], and on-chip excitation-suppression[10]. Here we overcome all of these challenges with a novel hybrid and scalable nanofabrication approach to generate quantum light on-chip, where selected single III-V quantum emitters are positioned and deterministically integrated in a CMOS compatible circuit[11] with controlled on-chip filtering and <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://excitation-suppression.Furthermore" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>, we demonstrate novel on-chip quantum wavelength division multiplexing, showing tunable routing of single-photons. Our reconfigurable quantum photonic circuits with a foot print one million times smaller than similar table-top approaches, offering outstanding excitation suppression of more than 95 dB and efficient routing of single photons over a bandwidth of 40 nm, are essential to unleash integrated quantum optical technologies full potential.

Abstract:Quantum state tomography is the experimental procedure of determining an unknown state. It is not only essential for the verification of resources and processors of quantum information but is also important in its own right with regard to the foundation of quantum mechanics. Standard methods have been elusive for large systems because of the enormous number of observables to be measured and the exponential complexity of data post-processing. Here, we propose a new scheme of quantum state tomography that requires the measurement of only three observables (acting jointly on the system and pointer) regardless of the size of the system. The system is coupled to a "pointer" of single qubit, and the wavefunction of the system is "reaped" onto the pointer upon the measurement of the system. Subsequently, standard two-state tomography on the pointer and classical post-processing are used to reconstruct the quantum state of the system. We also developed an efficient and scalable iterative maximum likelihood algorithm to estimate states from statistically incomplete data.

Abstract:The detection of individual photons is an inherently binary mechanism, revealing either their absence or presence while concealing their spectral information. For multi-color imaging techniques, such as single photon spectroscopy, fluorescence resonance energy transfer microscopy and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, wavelength discrimination is essential and mandates spectral separation prior to detection. Here, we adopt an approach borrowed from quantum photonic integration to realize a compact and scalable waveguide-integrated single-photon spectrometer capable of parallel detection on multiple wavelength channels, with temporal resolution below 50 ps and dark count rates below 10 Hz. We demonstrate multi-detector devices for telecommunication and visible wavelengths and showcase their performance by imaging silicon vacancy color centers in diamond nanoclusters. The fully integrated hybrid superconducting-nanophotonic circuits enable simultaneous spectroscopy and lifetime mapping for correlative imaging and provide the ingredients for quantum wavelength division multiplexing on a chip.

Abstract:Solid-state quantum emitters coupled to integrated photonic nanostructures are quintessential for exploring fundamental phenomena in cavity quantum electrodynamics and widely employed in photonic quantum technologies such as non-classical light sources, quantum repeaters, and quantum transducers, etc. One of the most exciting promises from integrated quantum photonics is the potential of scalability that enables massive productions of miniaturized devices on a single chip. In reality, the yield of efficient and reproducible light-matter couplings is greatly hindered by the spectral and spatial mismatches between the single solid-state quantum emitters and confined or propagating optical modes supported by the photonic nanostructures, preventing the high-throughput realization of large-scale integrated quantum photonic circuits for more advanced quantum information processing tasks. In this work, we introduce the concept of hyperspectral imaging in quantum optics, for the first time, to address such a long-standing issue. By exploiting the extended mode with a unique dispersion in a 1D planar cavity, the spectral and spatial information of each individual quantum dot in an ensemble can be accurately and reliably extracted from a single wide-field photoluminescence image with super-resolutions. With the extracted quantum dot positions and emission wavelengths, surface-emitting quantum light sources and in-plane photonic circuits can be deterministically fabricated with a high-throughput by etching the 1D confined planar cavity into 3D confined micropillars and 2D confined waveguides. Further extension of this technique by employing an open planar cavity could be exploited for pursuing a variety of compact quantum photonic devices with expanded functionalities for large-scale integration. Our work is expected to change the landscape of integrated quantum photonic technology.

Abstract:Quantum optical technologies promise advances in sensing, computing, and communication. A key resource is squeezed light, where quantum noise is redistributed between optical quadratures. We introduce a monolithic, chip-scale platform that exploits the χ (2) nonlinearity of a thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) resonator device to efficiently generate squeezed states of light. Our system integrates all essential components—except for the laser and two detectors—on a single chip with an area of one square centimeter, reducing the size, operational complexity, and power consumption associated with conventional setups. Using the balanced homodyne measurement subsystem that we implemented on the same chip, we measure a squeezing of 0.55 decibels and an anti-squeezing of 1.55 decibels. We use 20 milliwatts of input power to generate the parametric oscillator pump field by using second harmonic generation on the same chip. Our work represents a step toward compact and efficient quantum optical systems posed to leverage the rapid advances in integrated nonlinear and quantum photonics.

Single photon imaging based on a photon driven sparse sampling

Abstract:Single photon three-dimensional (3D) imager can capture 3D profile details and see through obscuring objects with high sensitivity, making it promising in sensing and imaging applications. The key capabilities of such 3D imager lie on its depth resolution and multi-return discrimination. For conventional pulsed single photon lidar, these capabilities are limited by transmitter bandwidth and receiver bandwidth simultaneously. A single photon imager is proposed and experimentally demonstrated to implement time-resolved and multi-return imaging. Time-to-frequency conversion is performed to achieve millimetric depth resolution. Experimental results show that the depth resolution is better than 4.5 mm, even though time jitter of the SPAD reaches 1 ns and time resolution of the TCSPC module reaches 10 ns. Furthermore, photon driven sparse sampling mechanism allows us to discriminate multiple near surfaces, no longer limited by the receiver bandwidth. The simplicity of the system hardware enables low-cost and compact 3D imaging.

Abstract:Scaling-up optical quantum technologies requires a combination of highly efficient multi-photon sources and integrated waveguide components. Here, we interface these scalable platforms, demonstrating high-rate three-photon interference with a quantum dot based multi-photon source and a reconfigurable photonic chip on glass. We actively demultiplex the temporal train of single photons obtained from a quantum emitter to generate a 3.8×103 s−1 three-photon source, which is then sent to the input of a tunable tritter circuit, demonstrating the on-chip quantum interference of three indistinguishable single photons. We show via pseudo number-resolving photon detection characterizing the output distribution that this first combination of scalable sources and reconfigurable photonic circuits compares favorably in performance with respect to previous implementations. Our detailed loss-budget shows that merging solid-state multi-photon sources and reconfigurable photonic chips could allow 10-photon experiments on chip at ∼40 s−1 rate in a foreseeable future. © 2019 Optical Society of America under the terms of the OSA Open Access Publishing Agreement

Abstract:The implementation of fully integrated single-photon sources and detectors into waveguide structures such as photonic crystals or a slab and ridge waveguide is currently one of the major goals in the linear optics quantum computation and communication community. Here, we present an implementation of a single-photon on-chip experiment based on a III–V semiconductor platform. Individual semiconductor quantum dots were used as pulsed single-photon sources integrated in ridge waveguides, and the on-chip waveguide-beamsplitter operation is verified on the single-photon level by performing off-chip photon cross-correlation measurements between the two output ports of the beamsplitter. A degree of polarization of the emitted photons above 90% is observed and a careful characterization of the waveguide propagation losses in straight (< 1.5 dB mm−1) and bent (∼ (8.5 ± 2.2) dB mm−1) sections documents the applicability of such GaAs-based waveguide structures in more complex photonic integrated circuits. The presented work marks an important step towards the realization of fully integrated photonic quantum circuits including on-demand single-photon emitters.

Abstract:A typical imaging scenario requires three basic ingredients: (1) a light source that emits light, which in turn interacts and scatters off the object of interest; (2) detection of the light being scattered from the object and (3) a detector with spatial resolution. These indispensable ingredients in typical imaging scenarios may limit their applicability in the imaging of biological or other sensitive specimens due to unavailable photon-starved detection capabilities and inevitable damage induced by interaction. Here, we propose and experimentally realize a quantum imaging protocol that alleviates all three requirements. By embedding a single-photon Michelson interferometer into a nonlinear interferometer based on induced coherence and harnessing single-pixel imaging technique, we demonstrate interaction-free, single-pixel quantum imaging of a structured object with undetected photons. Thereby, we push the capability of quantum imaging to the extreme point in which no interaction is required between object and photons and the detection requirement is greatly reduced. Our work paves the path for applications in characterizing delicate samples with single-pixel imaging at silicon-detectable wavelengths.

Experimental sample-efficient quantum state tomography via parallel measurements

Abstract:Quantum state tomography (QST) via local measurements on reduced density matrices (LQST) is a promising approach but becomes impractical for large systems. To tackle this challenge, we developed an efficient quantum state tomography method inspired by quantum overlapping tomography [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 100401(2020)], which utilizes parallel measurements (PQST). In contrast to LQST, PQST significantly reduces the number of measurements and offers more robustness against shot noise. Experimentally, we demonstrate the feasibility of PQST in a tree-like superconducting qubit chip by designing high-efficiency circuits, preparing W states, ground states of Hamiltonians and random states, and then reconstructing these density matrices using full quantum state tomography (FQST), LQST, and PQST. Our results show that PQST reduces measurement cost, achieving fidelities of 98.68\% and 95.07\% after measuring 75 and 99 observables for 6-qubit and 9-qubit W states, respectively. Furthermore, the reconstruction of the largest density matrix of the 12-qubit W state is achieved with the similarity of 89.23\% after just measuring $243$ parallel observables, while $3^{12}=531441$ complete observables are needed for FQST. Consequently, PQST will be a useful tool for future tasks such as the reconstruction, characterization, benchmarking, and properties learning of states.

Abstract:Multiplexing techniques combine multiple signals into one channel, in order to increase the channel capacity and speed. Here we propose a correlation-based imaging method to efficiently measure the quantum states of orbital-angular-momentum (OAM)-multiplexed Gaussian light. The covariance matrices for all OAM components of the multiplexed Gaussian light can be efficiently reconstructed by one homodyne measurement on each beam. Abstract:In the light of the progress in quantum technologies, the task of verifying the correct functioning of processes and obtaining accurate tomographic information about quantum states becomes increasingly important. Compressed sensing, a machinery derived from the theory of signal processing, has emerged as a feasible tool to perform robust and significantly more resource-economical quantum state tomography for intermediate-sized quantum systems. In this work, we provide a comprehensive analysis of compressed sensing tomography in the regime in which tomographically complete data is available with reliable statistics from experimental observations of a multi-mode photonic architecture. Due to the fact that the data is known with high statistical significance, we are in a position to systematically explore the quality of reconstruction depending on the number of employed measurement settings, randomly selected from the complete set of data, and on different model assumptions. We present and test a complete prescription to perform efficient compressed sensing and are able to reliably use notions of model selection and cross-validation to account for experimental imperfections and finite counting statistics. Thus, we establish compressed sensing as an effective tool for quantum state tomography, specifically suited for photonic systems.

Optical time-domain quantum state tomography on a subcycle scale

Abstract:Following recent progress in the experimental application of electro-optic sampling to the detection of the quantum fluctuations of the electromagnetic-field ground state and ultrabroadband squeezed states on a subcycle scale, we propose an approach to elevate broadband electro-optic sampling from a spectroscopic method to a full quantum tomography scheme, able to reconstruct a broadband quantum state directly in the time-domain. By combining two recently developed methods to theoretically describe quantum electro-optic sampling, we analytically relate the photon-count probability distribution of the electro-optic signal to a transformed phase-space quasiprobability distribution of the sampled quantum state as a function of the time delay between the sampled mid-infrared pulsed state and an ultrabroadband near-infrared pump/probe pulse. We catalog and analyze sources of noise and show that in quantum electro-optic sampling with an ultrabroadband pump pulse one can expect to observe thermalization due to entanglement breaking. Mitigation of the thermalization noise enables a tomographic reconstruction of broadband quantum states while granting access to its dynamics on a subcycle scale.
