Abstract:Transition metal (TM) substitution has been widely applied to change complex oxides crystal structures to create high energy density electrodes materials in high performance rechargeable lithium‐ion batteries. The complex local structure in the oxides imparted by the TM arrangement often impacts their electrochemical behaviors by influencing the diffusion and intercalation of lithium. Here, a major discrepancy is demonstrated between the global and local structures of the promising high energy density and high voltage LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 spinel cathode material that contradicts the existing structural models. A new single‐phase lattice‐cell orientation disorder model is proposed as the mechanism for the local ordering that explains how the inhomogeneous local distortions and the coherent connection give rise to the global structure in the complex oxide. Further, the single‐phase model is consistent with the electrochemical behavior observation of the materials.
Tailoring Grain Boundary Structures and Chemistry of Ni-rich Layered Cathodes for Enhanced Cycle Stability of Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:The biggest challenge for the commercialization of layered structured nickel rich lithium transition metal oxide cathode is the capacity and voltage fading. Resolving this problem over the years follows an incremental progress. In this work, we report our finding of totally a new approach to revolutionize the cycle stability of aggregated cathode particles for lithium ion battery at both room and elevated temperatures. We discover that infusion of a solid electrolyte into the grain boundaries of the cathode secondary particles can dramatically enhance the capacity retention and voltage stability of the battery. We find that the solid electrolyte infused in the boundaries not only acts as a fast channel for Li ion transport, but also most importantly prevents penetration of the liquid electrolyte into the boundaries, consequently eliminating the detrimental factors that include solid-liquid interfacial reaction, intergranular cracking, and layer to spinel phase transformation. The present work, for the first time, reveals unprecedented insight as how the cathode behaves in the case of not contacting with the liquid electrolyte, ultimately points toward a general new route, via grain boundary engineering, for designing of better batteries of both solid-liquid and solid state systems.

Abstract:The intercalation compounds are generally considered as ideal electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries thanks to their minimum volume expansion and fast lithium ion diffusion. However, cracking still occurs in those compounds and has been identified as one of the critical issues responsible for their capacity decay and short cycle life, although the diffusion-induced stress and volume expansion are much smaller than those in alloying-type electrodes. Here, we designed a thin-film model system that enables us to tailor the cation ordering in LiNi(0.5)Mn(1.5)O4 spinels and correlate the stress patterns, phase evolution, and cycle performances. Surprisingly, we found that distinct reaction paths cause negligible difference in the overall stress patterns but significantly different cracking behaviors and cycling performances: 95% capacity retention for disordered LiNi(0.5)Mn(1.5)O4 and 48% capacity retention for ordered LiNi(0.5)Mn(1.5)O4 after 2000 cycles. We were able to pinpoint that the extended solid-solution region with suppressed phase transformation attributed to the superior electrochemical performance of disordered spinel. This work envisions a strategy for rationally designing stable cathodes for lithium-ion batteries through engineering the atomic structure that extends the solid-solution region and suppresses phase transformation.

Abstract:LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 (NCA) secondary particles with high tap density have a great potential for high volumetric energy density lithium (Li)‐ion power battery. However, the ionic conductivity mechanism of NCA with compact structure is still a suspense, especially the function of grain boundaries. Herein, we systematically investigate the Li‐ion transport behavior in both the primitive NCA (PNCA) secondary sphere densely grown by single‐crystal primary grains and ball‐milled NCA (MNCA) nanosized particle to reveal the role of grain boundaries for Li‐ion transport. The PNCA and MNCA have comparable Li‐ion diffusion coefficients and rate performance. Moreover, the graphene nanosheet conductive additive only mildly affects the Li‐ion diffusion in PNCA cathode, while which severely blocks the Li‐ion transport in MNCA cathode. Through high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy, we clearly observe Li‐ion depletion at lower state of charge (SOC) and Li‐ion aggregation at high SOC along the grain boundaries of PNCA secondary particles during high‐rate lithiation process. The grain boundaries can construct an interconnected Li‐ion transport network for highly efficient Li‐ion transport, which contributes to excellent high‐rate performance of compact PNCA secondary particles. These findings present new strategy and deep insight in designing compact materials with excellent high‐rate performance.

Abstract:The fragmentation caused by cracks spreading along grain boundaries seriously deteriorates the cycling performance of high nickel (Ni ≥ 90%) layered cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In this study, heterogeneous nucleation was utilized to epitaxially grow LiNbO 3 layer onto LiNi 0.90 Co 0.05 Mn 0.05 O 2 (NCM90). Importantly, the LiNbO 3 layer was compatible with the highly reactive surface of NCM90. The formation process of LiNbO 3 solid embryos was calculated and discussed based on crystal solidification theory, and the distribution of solid embryos revealed thin zone crystallization and aggregation zone grain pinning. More interestingly, the surface stiffness and surface Young's modulus of the NCM90 were significantly enhanced, and the grain movement (fragmentation) caused by the non-uniform contraction of the unit cell was bound correspondingly at high cut-off voltages. Originating from the binding effect of the coating layer, the value of surface hoop internal stress of NCM90 decreased by 22.88% to inhibit the cracking and reduce the loss of NCM90 during cycling. At the potential range of 3.0-4.3 V at 50 mA g -1 , the specific discharge capacity of the optimized NCM90 increased from 109.3 mAh g -1 to 147.4 mAh g -1 after 200 cycles. It is believed that this study provides a simple, convenient but effective strategy to restrain the fragmentation of high nickel layered cathode materials for LIBs.

Abstract:The electrode kinetics of Li-ion batteries, which are important for battery utilization in electric vehicles, are affected by the grain size, crystal orientation, and surface structure of electrode materials. However, the kinetic influences of the grain interior structure and element segregation are poorly understood, especially for Li-rich layered oxides with complex crystalline structures and unclear electrochemical phenomena. In this work, cross-sectional thin transmission electron microscopy specimens are "anatomized" from pristine Li1.2Mn0.567Ni0.167Co0.067O2 powders using a new argon ion slicer technique. Utilizing advanced microscopy techniques, the interior configuration of a single grain, multiple monocrystal-like domains, and nickel-segregated domain boundaries are clearly revealed; furthermore, a randomly distributed atomic-resolution Li2MnO3-like with an intergrown LiTMO2 (TM = transitional metals) "twin domain" is demonstrated to exist in each domain. Further theoretical calculations based on the Li2MnO3-like crystal domain boundary model reveal that Li(+) migration in the Li2MnO3-like structure with domain boundaries is sluggish, especially when the nickel is segregated in domain boundaries. Our work uncovers the complex configuration of the crystalline grain interior and provides a conceptual advance in our understanding of the electrochemical performance of several compounds for Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:First-generation cathodes for commercial lithium-ion batteries are based on layered transition-metal oxides. Research on ternary compounds, such as LiCoO2, evolved into mixed-metal systems, notably Li(Ni,Mn,Co)O2 (NMCs), which allows significant tuning of the physical properties. Despite their widespread application in commercial devices, the fundamental understanding of NMCs is incomplete. Here, we review the latest insights from multiscale modeling, bridging between the redox phenomena that occur at an atomistic level to the transport of ions and electrons across an operating device. We discuss changes in the electronic and vibrational structures through the NMC compositional space and how these link to continuum models of electrochemical charge–discharge cycling. Finally, we outline the remaining challenges for predictive models of high-performance batteries, including capturing the relevant device bottlenecks and chemical degradation processes, such as oxygen evolution.

Abstract:Spinel LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 (LNMO) is a promising cathode material due to its high operation voltage, cobalt free nature and low cost. High energy density of batteries could be realized by coupling LNMO with high-capacity Si based anodes, before which large active lithium loss at the anode should be addressed. Pre-insertion of additional lithium (Li, x ) into LNMO, namely overlithaition of LNMO (L 1+ x NMO) here, becomes a promising approach for active Li compensation. Understanding the materials structure and property evolution of L 1+ x NMO and their further effect on electrochemical behavior is crucial. Although spinel LNMO could endure a certain amount of extra Li, its excessive insertion could cause degradation in materials structure, interfacial stability and electrochemical performance due to the introduction of large strain, grain boundaries and immoderate reduction of Mn element. L 1.4 NMO showed a tradeoff between donable lithium-ion capacity and electrochemical cycling stability among the investigated L 1+ x NMO ( x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 1) samples. L 1.4 NMO||Si/C cell presented a reversible capacity of 121.7 mAh g −1 and energy density of 429 Wh kg −1 , achieving over 50% improvement than that of LNMO||Si/C cell.

Abstract:Mix transition metal layered oxide materials are much attractive for cathode materials in lithium ion batteries. However, the disordered arrangement between lithium and transition metal ions in local regions of these materials always occurs, and seriously affects their electrochemical performance. Here we report experimental and first-principles calculations of Li+/Ni2+ ion exchange in the LiNi0.42Mn0.42Co0.16O2 materials prepared by solid state reaction and co-precipitation methods. The impact of Li+/Ni2+ ions exchange on the crystal/electronic structure, electrochemical performance and stress are investigated in detail. The results show that there are obvious anisotropic stress and smaller inter-slab space of the unit cell associated with greater Li+/Ni2+ ion exchange. During the delithiation process, the distortion force in the unit cell of the material with large Li+/Ni2+ ion exchange increases sharply and presents strong spin-flip transition of Ni ions (magnetic moment direction change). These issues are closely associated with the electrochemical performance of these layered oxide materials and definitely affect their reversible capacity, cycle stability and rate performance.

Abstract:High-Ni low-Co layered LiNixCoyMnzO2 (NCM, x + y + z = 1) compounds are widely used as cathode materials for the lithium-ion batteries of electrical vehicles due to their high energy density. Intrinsic chemomechanical instability and fast capacity fading of NCM degrade the battery performance; however, an emerging single-crystal particle strategy can potentially overcome these problems. In this study, we investigate possible ways of tuning the single-crystal NCM morphology by performing ab initio calculations combined with Wulff shape construction and crystal orbital Hamilton population analysis. As a result, surface structural units with different Miller indices were identified, and a linear relationship was established between the surface energy and the density of cleaved bonds. By constructing Wulff shapes, we found that LiCoO2 had the largest grain size among the studied NCM materials. Finally, we calculated the X–O (X = Li, Ni, Co, or Mn) bond strengths and concluded that the NCM surface morphology can be effectively tuned by modulating the transition metal–O bond strength.

Abstract:Here, a detailed investigation of the crystal structure of Lithium‐Rich layered Oxides is reported, using Synchrotron X‐ray diffraction, Neutron diffraction, and Transmission Electron Microscopy. The introduction of defects into a monoclinic unit cell and the supercells approach can describe all main structural features, opening new frontiers in rationalization of the interplay between synthesis, structure, and electrochemical properties. Lithium‐rich layered oxides (LRLOs) are one of the most attractive families among future positive electrode materials for the so‐called fourth generation of lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs). Their electrochemical performance is enabled by the unique ambiguous crystal structure that is still not well understood despite decades of research. In the literature, a clear structural model able to describe their crystallographic features is missing thereby hindering a clear rationalization of the interplay between synthesis, structure, and functional properties. Here, the structure of a specific LRLO, Li1.28Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.02Al0.03O2, using synchrotron X‐ray diffraction (XRD), neutron diffraction (ND), and High‐Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR‐TEM), is analyzed. A systematic approach is applied to model diffraction patterns of Li1.28Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.02Al0.03O2 by using the Rietveld refinement method considering the R3 ̄ m and C2/m unit cells as the prototype structures. Here, the relative ability of a variety of structural models is compared to match the experimental diffraction pattern evaluating the impact of defects and supercells derived from the R3 ̄ m structure. To summarize, two possible models able to reconcile the description of experimental data are proposed here for the structure of Li1.28Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.02Al0.03O2: namely a monoclinic C2/m defective lattice (prototype Li2MnO3) and a monoclinic defective supercell derived from the rhombohedral R3 ̄ m unit cell (prototype LiCoO2).

Abstract:Epitaxial LiMn2O4 (LMO)/La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 (LSCO) bilayer thin films were grown on single crystalline SrTiO3 (STO) (111) substrates as model lithium ion battery cathodes. The LSCO layer was used as an electrically conducting buffer layer for electrochemical testing. The LMO and LSCO layers were both epitaxial, with sub-nano flat LMO/LSCO interfaces as seen by X-ray diffraction, synchrotron X-ray scattering, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), but with a large LMO surface roughness due to the relatively large lattice mismatch with LSCO. Three-dimensional islands and depressions were formed on the strain-relaxed LMO layer, and misfit dislocations at the LMO/LSCO interface were discerned through HRTEM imaging, suggesting a Stranski-Krastanov (SK) mode thin-film growth. A crystalline structural change from cubic spinel at the LMO surface and interior to tetragonal oxygen-deficient LMO at the LMO/LSCO interface was examined. Electrochemical tests along with in situ synchrotron X-ray scattering measurements on the epitaxial LMO/LSCO bilayers showed a significant loss of capacity after the first cycle, which was attributed to an electrical conductivity loss of the LSCO buffer layer due to irreversible lattice oxygen loss.

Abstract:Layered LiNi0.80Co0.15Al0.05O2 (NCA) is a promising cathode material for lithium ion batteries (LIBs), which has a high rate capability, a long lifetime and theoretically a high specific capacity. The aluminum addition prevents the NCA layered structure from collapsing into an inactive rock-salt phase, but it also accelerates the spinel phase transformation. Abstract:Li+/Na+ exchange has been extensively explored as an effective method to prepare high-performance Mn-based layered cathodes for Li-ion batteries, since the first report in 1996 by P. G. Bruce (Nature, 1996. 381, 499-500). Understanding the detailed structural changes during the ion-exchange process is crucial to implement the synthetic control of high-performance layered Mn-based cathodes, but less studied. Herein, in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction, density functional theory calculations, and electrochemical tests are combined to conduct the systemic studies into the structural changes during the ion-exchange process of an Mn-only layered cathode O3-type Li-0.67[Li0.22Mn0.78]O-2 (LLMO) from the corresponding counterpart P3-type Na-0.67[Li0.22Mn0.78]O-2 (NLMO). The temperature-resolved observations combined with theoretical calculations reveal that the Li+/Na+ exchange is favorable thermodynamically and composited with two tandem topotactic phase transitions: 1) from NLMO to a layered intermediate through approximate to 60% of Li+/Na+ exchange. 2) then to the final layered product LLMO through further Li insertion. Moreover, the intermediate-dominate composite is obtained by slowing down the exchange kinetics below room temperature, showing better electrochemical performance than LLMO obtained by the traditional molten-salt method. The findings provide guides for the synthetic control of high-performance Mn-based cathodes under mild conditions.
Structures and Electronic States of Nickel Rich Oxides for Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:A new superstructure of layered pristine LiNiO2 (LNO) was obtained optimizing a large supercell of the 166 space group, the one observed experimentally by XRD, and relaxing both cell parameters and internal positions. The crystal structure shows size and charge disproportionation of the NiO6 octahedra instead of the Jahn-Teller distortion. The decrease of the internal energy obtained with the structural optimization of the supercell relative to the same structure in its primitive unit cell is much larger than the one obtained by relaxing similarly dimensioned supercells of monoclinic symmetry relative to their primitive unit cells, although the monoclinic phase remains more stable. The Ni-O bond length distribution of the new structure agree well with the experiments. Our results show that the choice of the simulation cell is important for determining the energetics of this class of oxide materials, proposed for cathodes in lithium ion batteries (LIBs). We used this new structure as a template for the study of the structural and electronic changes induced by the delithiation and Mn for Ni cation substitution, originating the solid solutions LiNiyMn(1-y)O2 (LNMO). Our results, surprisingly, agree well with the existing experiments and explain observed trends better than previous studies.

Atomic Insight into the Layered/Spinel Phase Transformation in Charged LiNi0.80Co0.15Al0.05O2 Cathode Particles

Abstract:Layered LiNi0.80Co0.15Al0.05O2 (NCA) holds great promise as a potential cathode material for high energy density lithium ion batteries. However, its high capacity is heavily dependent on the stability of its layered structure, which suffers from a severe structure degradation resulting from a not fully understood layered -> spinel phase transformation. Using high resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction, we probe the atomic structure evolution induced by the layered -> spinel phase transformation in the NCA cathode. We show that the phase transformation results in the development of a particle structure with the formation of complete spinel, spinel domains, and intermediate spinel from the surface to the subsurface region. The lattice planes of the complete and intermediate spinel phases are highly interwoven in the subsurface region. The layered -> spinel transformation occurs via the migration of transition metal (TM) atoms from the TM layer into the lithium layer. Incomplete migration leads to the formation of the intermediate spinel phase, which is featured by tetrahedral occupancy of TM cations in the lithium layer. The crystallographic structure of the intermediate spinel is discussed and verified by the simulation of electron diffraction patterns.

Abstract:Layer structured mixed transition metal oxides LiNixMnyCoyO2 (x+y+z=1, NMC) have been widely studied as promising cathode materials for Li-ion batteries due to their superior properties, better thermal stability, lower cost and higher capacity comparing to LiCoO2, which is the widely used cathode material for Li-ion cells. A typical NMC cathode with a composition of 1:1:1 (LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2) is already being used in commercial lithium-ion battery cells. However, more systematic studies on the structure-performance relationship of the NCM materials are needed. It is critical to understand the role of each element in electrochemical performance in terms of the capacity, rate capability, cycling and calendar lifes as well as safety characteristics. In this regard, we present here a systematic study on the structural changes that occur in the NMC cathode materials with several different compositions such as NMC = 333, 433, 532, 622 and 811 during charge using combined in-situ synchrotron based X-ray techniques. While in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to track the average bulk crystal structural changes, in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) was applied to monitor the electronic structure and local structure changes around each transition metal element (Ni, Mn and Co) in the NMC cathode during charge. In addition, time-resolved XRD and Quick-EXAFS were also used for monitoring its structural changes and kinetic property of each transition metal upon charge at different C rates (C/10 to 30C). Detailed results including in situ XRD and XAS on the NMC materials with various NMC compositions during charge will be present. A new model on cation distribution in cation-disordered Li1+xTM1−xO2 cathodes

Abstract:The search for new materials that could improve the energy density of Li-ion batteries (LIB) is one of today's most challenging issues. Recently, cation-disordered lithium-excess metal oxides have emerged as a promising new class of cathode materials for LIB, due to their high reversible capacities and nice structural stability. However, a full structural model of the Li-transition metal (TM) sharing sublattice and the origin of short range ordering (SRO) of cations requires further investigation. In this work, we put forward a Monte Carlo strategy of building cation-disordered rocksalt material supercell models. The cations of Li1.0Ti0.5Ni0.5O2 (LTNO) are placed at the FCC sublattice sites with the constraint of Pauling's electroneutrality rule, instead of a random way. This constraint causes the Li-Ti and Ni-Ni clustering. Based on this model, we discussed the relationship between the SRO, the local distorting, the theoretical capacity and the order-disorder strengths. A unified understanding of these factors in cation-disordered materials may enable a better design of disordered-electrode materials with high capacity and high energy density.
