Abstract:A new kind of hydrogen storage material,zinc borohydride,was synthesized by mechanical alloying via NaBH4 and ZnCl2.Its microstructures and thermodynamical properties were analyzed by XRD,FT-IR,Raman spectra and DSC-TGA.XRD measurement show that the major phase of the products was NaCl and Zn(BH4)2,alternatively,the raw materials of NaBH4 or ZnCl2 disappeared.FT-IR and Raman spectra tests confirmed the existence of Zn(BH4)2 in the products;DSC and TGA measurements show that the hydrogen releasing amount was ~3.00% at 30~150℃.
Improving MgH2 formation kinetics and its effect on NaBH4 synthesis

Abstract:Mg and Mg-based alloys are not only promising hydrogen storage materials due to their high storage capacities, but also potential reducing agents in the synthesis of sodium borohydride NaBH4, an attractive hydrogen source with 10.6wt% hydrogen content. In this study, the MgH2 formation kinetics in pure Mg and Mg–23.5wt% Ni was studied and correlated with NaBH4 synthesis kinetics. It was found that the hydriding kinetics of Mg–23.5wt% Ni was significantly improved owing to the fine laminar Mg/Mg2Ni structure. Ballmilling and surface treatment made the eutectic alloy absorb 2.0wt% hydrogen at 353K. When these materials were applied for the NaBH4 synthesis, it was found that the eutectic Mg–Ni alloy enhanced the NaBH4 formation kinetics at high temperatures. However, NaBH4 was not produced at 353K although MgH2 could be formed.

Abstract:Hydrogen energy has attracted considerable attention as a promising alternative to petroleum. Herein, a novel (Al-x%Li)-y%NaBH4 composite with a core-shell structure has been designed and synthesized by a one-step ball-milling method for generating hydrogen by hydrolysis. NaBH4 formed a surface coating that completely wrapped the Al-x%Li alloy particles to prevent agglomeration and oxidation. Meanwhile, the synergism between the Al-Li alloy and NaBH4 promoted the hydrogen generation rate (HGR) of the composite. The total hydrogen release content of (Al-10%Li)-10%NaBH4 reached 1468.8 mLmiddotg-1, with the highest HGR reaching 4393.7 mLmiddotg-1middotmin-1 at 303 K. The (Al-x%Li)-y%NaBH4 composites also exhibited outstanding hydrolysis capacity during reaction with a near-stoichiometric amount of added CoCl2 solution. The hydrogen emission exceeded 90% when only twice the amount of stoichiometric CoCl2 solution was injected. The hydrogen mass density of the total system increased to more than 2.3 wt% from approximately 0.6 wt% with the addition of 10 stoichiometric solution, indicating the practical application of the portable fuel cell in conserving the total volume of the facility.(c) 2022 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:A significant obstacle in the large-scale applications of sodium borohydride (NaBH4) for hydrogen storage is its high cost. Herein, we report a new method to synthesize NaBH4 by ball milling hydrated sodium tetraborate (Na2B4O7 . 10H(2)O) with low-cost Al or Al88Si12, instead of Na, Mg or Ca. An effective strategy is developed to facilitate mass transfer during the reaction by introducing NaH to enable the formation of NaAlO2 instead of dense Al2O3 on Al surface, and by using Si as a milling additive to prevent agglomeration and also break up passivation layers. Another advantage of this process is that hydrogen in Na2B4O7 . 10H(2)O serves as a hydrogen source for NaBH4 generation. Considering the low cost of the starting materials and simplicity in operation, our studies demonstrate the potential of producing NaBH4 in a more economical way than the commercial process.
Efficient Synthesis of Sodium Borohydride: Balancing Reducing Agents with Intrinsic Hydrogen Source in Hydrated Borax

Abstract:Sodium borohydride (NaBH4) has been identified as one of the most promising hydrogen storage materials; however, it is still challenging to produce NaBH4 with low cost and high efficiency, which are largely determined by the sources of boron and hydrogen and reducing agents used. Herein, we report an economical method to produce NaBH4 by ball milling hydrated borax (Na2B4O7·10H2O and/or Na2B4O7·5H2O) with different reducing agents such as MgH2, Mg, and NaH under ambient conditions. The direct use of natural hydrated borax avoids the dehydration process (at 600 °C) and consequently reduces cost and improves overall energy efficiency. A high yield of 93.1% can be achieved for a short ball mill duration (3.5 h) for Na2B4O7·5H2O-NaH-MgH2 system. In this system, H2 is generated in situ which subsequently reacts with Mg forming MgH2. Low cost Mg is therefore employed to replace the majority of MgH2, leading to an attractive yield of 78.6%. To further reduce the cost of raw materials and improve the utilization of hydrogen source in the hydrated borax, Na2B4O7·10H2O is used to partially substitute for Na2B4O7·5H2O, leading to a complete replacement of MgH2. Compared with literature results, the optimized recipe features low cost and high efficiency since it utilizes hydrogen from the hydrated water in natural borax and avoids high temperatures. Abstract:In this work, we explored the possibility of NaBH4 synthesis when Mg reacted with hydrous sodium borates under hydrogen. It was found that Mg could react with the water in molten hydrous borates to form MgO and release hydrogen, which can be used for NaBH4 synthesis. Then remained Mg would react with formed anhydrous borate to form NaBH4. NaBO2 conversion rate was decreased with increase of the crystalline water content in the hydrous sodium borates. Based on experimental results, a mechanism of NaBH4 formation when Mg reacted with hydrous sodium borates was suggested.

Abstract:Sodium metaborate is a by-product from deoxidation of sodium borohydride. The sodium borohydride can be obtained by deoxidation of the aforementioned sodium metaborate as raw material in the presence of metalic sodium and quartzite. The isopropyl amine is used as extractive and purifying agent to give the final sodium borohydride with high purity and yield of 47.8%. The recovery of the extraction agent can reach 85%.

Abstract:In this paper, sequential experiments were designed to explore the possibility of sodium borohydride synthesis by reaction of sodium borates with Al and hydrogen. It was found that NaBH4 cannot be formed by reaction of NaBO2 with Al and hydrogen but can be formed by reaction of Na4B2O5 with Al and hydrogen. NaBH4 formation was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analyses and morphology observations. It was found that Na2O in Na4B2O5 played an important role in NaBH4 formation due to the depression of Al2O3 formation. The highest sodium borohydride yield (65.8%) was obtained by reaction of a mixture of Na4B2O5, NaBO2, and Na2O with Al and hydrogen. However, NaBH4 formation was dependent upon the physical state of sodium borates. When sodium borates melted, NaBH4 formation was retarded due to the difficulty of hydrogen diffusion to Al surfaces.

Abstract:A convenient method was developed to synthesize NaBH4 by the reaction of MgH2 with Na2B4O7 through ball milling at room temperature. In order to improve the sodium borohydride yield, Na compounds were added to compensate the Na insufficiency in reactants when MgH2 instead of NaH was used as the reducing agent. It was found that Na2CO3 addition was better than NaOH or Na2O2 addition in increasing the borohydride yield.

Abstract:Onsite hydrogen generation by sodium borohydride hydrolysis resolves hydrogen energy supply system challenges. However, the spent-NaBH4 regeneration is still a problem in the closed loop of this irreversible reaction. As the by-product is the key to the problem, NaB(OH)4 is regarded as not the boron source but the hydrogen source of NaBH4 regeneration. Therefore, in this study, inexpensive Al metal and NaB(OH)4 are ball milled under argon to regenerate NaBH4 without additional hydrogen input. However, the ball-milling reaction is hindered by the flexible Al and impact oxide layer, and the NaBH4 yield is only approximately 22 %. Therefore, a brittle intermetallic compound Mg2Al3 is reacted with NaB(OH)4 by ball milling, achieving a NaBH4 yield of over 42 %. The mechanism study shows that the brittleness of the raw material plays an important role in promoting the ball-milling reaction. This study achieves NaBH4 regeneration using only Al as the reducing agent and provides a promising method to promote the mechanochemical regeneration of NaBH4.

Abstract:The sodium borohydride (NaBH4)-based hydrolysis system has received considerable interest as a potential hydrogen source for vehicular application. But its practical application was greatly restricted by the low hydrogen density and high material cost. In the present study, we reported that addition of aluminum (Al) powder is an easy but highly effective way for addressing the problems of the NaBH4-based hydrolysis system. The system was composed of alkaline aqueous solution of NaBH4 and solid powder mixture of Al and Co2B catalyst. The effects of alkaline concentration, NaBH4 concentration and Al amount on the hydrogen generation (HG) performance of the system were investigated. Our study showed that there exist a mutual-promoting mechanism between the hydrolysis reaction of NaBH4 and the Al/H2O reaction. As a consequence, this system exhibited distinct advantages over the conventional NaBH4-based system in terms of HG rate, fuel conversion, hydrogen density and H-2 production cost. These favourable attributes make the (NaBH4+Al)/H2O system attractive for mobile/portable hydrogen source applications.

Abstract:Magnesium borohydride (Mg(BH4)2) is widely regarded as a promising hydrogen storage material due to its high capacity; however, it is still challenging to synthesize Mg(BH4)2 with low cost. Traditionally, Mg(BH4)2 has been mainly produced using other borohydride as the starting materials via exchange reactions. Herein, we report an economical method to synthesize Mg(BH4)2 by converting B-O bonds in widely available borates or boric acid to B-H. The borates or boric acid is ball-milled with MgH2 under ambient conditions to form Mg(BH4)2 with high yield (>80%). Mg(BH4)2 was also successfully generated by reacting low-cost Mg with boric acid. Compared with previous approaches, this method avoids expensive boron sources such as LiBH4, NaBH4, and B2H6, and does not require high pressure H2 gas and high temperatures, and therefore significantly reduces costs. This method could be an alternative to the current Mg(BH4)2 synthesis processes.

In-situ Synthesis of Amorphous Mg(BH4)2 and Chloride Composite Modified by NbF5 for Superior Reversible Hydrogen Storage Properties

Abstract:The solvent-free amorphous Mg(BH4)(2) composite was in-situ synthesized by ball milling LiBH4 and MgCl2. It is found that the onset dehydrogenation temperature of the as synthesized composite is 126.9 degrees C, which is roughly 156 degrees C lower than that of pristine Mg(BH4)(2). The activation energy of the amorphous Mg(BH4)(2) and pristine Mg(BH4)(2) for the first dehydrogenation step was calculated as 120.01 kJ/mol and 487.99 kJ/mol, respectively. Hence the kinetics improvement is certified by the lower Ea value of the dehydrogenation process. When adding NbF5 into the composite, the catalyzed composite exhibits better hydrogen storage properties compared to pristine and amorphous Mg(BH4)(2). The catalyzed composite starts to release hydrogen at proximately 120 degrees C with a total capacity of 10.04 wt %. The reversibility of the catalyzed composite is also improved. The capacity of the catalyzed composite at the second cycle is 5.5 wt%. For the third and fourth cycles the catalyzed composite can still liberate 4 wt% H-2. Besides, the onset hydrogen desorption temperature during four cycles are extremely lower than those of pristine and amorphous Mg(BH4)(2). The peaks of the intermediate MgB12H12 is detected by FTIR as the regenerated hydrogenation product in the catalyzed composite. It can be speculated from the detailed analysis that there are mainly three reasons for the improved properties. Firstly, the additive NbF5 is favorable to enhance the hydrogen storage properties by modifying the dehydrogenation path and producing MgF2 and NbB2 as new products. Secondly, the in-situ formation of amorphous Mg(BH4)(2) is likely to improve the dehydrogenation properties of the samples due to its different reactivity comparing to crystal ones. Abstract:Hydrolysis of sodium borohydride NaBH4 is a promising method for on-board hydrogen supply for fuel cells. In this study, the hydrolysis reaction was studied by starting with solid NaBH4 rather than aqueous borohydride solutions, and adding less amount of water in an attempt to explore the maximum hydrogen generation capacity. It was found that hydrogen could be liberated at very high rates and over than 90% conversion rates were achieved when the mole ratio of water to sodium borohydride was not less than 4:1. The final hydrogen generation capacity was achieved as high as 6.7wt%. Materials such as CoCl2 or cobalt powder were found to be effective as the catalysts for the hydrolysis reaction at such reaction conditions. A large heat effect due to the exothermic reaction and a low melting point of NaBO2·4H2O led to the acceleration of hydrogen generation at the latter part of the hydrolysis process. It is thus promising to utilize these reaction conditions to achieve high hydrogen generation capacity by proper system design.
An One-Step Approach Towards Hydrogen Production and Storage Through Regeneration of NaBH4

Abstract:The hydrolysis of NaBH4 offers significant advantages for hydrogen storage in fuel cells, whereby suffers from the irreversibility. Thus, a simple and low cost method for NaBH4 regeneration from its hydrolysis byproduct is crucial. Herein, we describe a single step method for NaBH4 regeneration, which combines both hydrogen production and storage in the one step. In the process, a mixture of magnesium silicide and dihydrate sodium metaborate is reacted via ball milling under ambient conditions without the requirements of additional hydrogen sources. The hydrogen only comes from the splitting of H2O in the NaBO2·2H2O that is a direct byproduct of NaBH4 hydrolysis. The purified product demonstrates the same physicochemical properties as commercial NaBH4. Yields for NaBH4 regeneration approaching 80% are achieved using this method. Mechanism study indicates that the high yield is likely to be beneficial from the formation of the Mg-O-Si-H conjugated structure. NaBH4 regeneration using this process demonstrates a 30-fold reduction in cost over a previous study that used MgH2 as the reduction agent.

Abstract:Sodium tetrahydroborate (NaBH4) and dodecahydro-closo-dodecaborate (Na2B12H12) are both important inorganic compounds presenting multiple applications. Nevertheless, multistep and complicated conditions are usually demanded for their synthesis. In order to simplify the synthesis processes, we design a novel and facile solvent-free method for synthesizing NaBH4 or Na2B12H12 from NaNH2 and B10H14. The product of either NaBH4 or Na2B12H12 is manipulable by simply adjusting the ratio of NaNH2 to B10H14. The reaction equations of synthesizing NaBH4 and Na2B12H12 are proposed and verified, and the reaction pathways are elucidated. The findings here supply new insight to synthesize metal dodecaborates using the strategy of equal electron body for the first time and may shed light on synthesis of small metal B-H compounds from large B-H clusters.

Abstract:The regeneration of sodium borohydride (NaBH4) is crucial to form a closed cycle after it either supplies hydrogen energy via a hydrolysis process or provides energy through electron transfer at the anode of direct borohydride fuel cells (DBFCs). In both of these cases, the spent fuels are NaB(OH)(4) from NaBO2 aqueous solution. However, the current regeneration process from (NaB(OH)(4))center dot xH(2)O to form NaBH4 by reduction reaction and calcination at high temperature with metal hydrides as reducing agents is very expensive. In this work, we developed a simple regeneration process via ball milling with Mg-Al alloys as the reducing agent for NaB(OH)(4) under an argon atmosphere. Under optimized conditions, a high yield of about 72% of NaBH4 could be obtained. Mechanistic study showed that all the hydrogen atoms from NaB(OH)(4) remain in NaBH4 and no additional hydrogen sources are needed for the reduction process. The inexpensive Mg-Al alloy works as a reducing agent transforming the H+ to H- in NaBH4. This approach demonstrates a similar to 20-fold cost reduction compared with the method using metal hydrides. This opens the door to the commercial implementation of simple ball milling processes for the regeneration of spent NaBH4 from NaB(OH)(4) with cheap reducing agents.
Closing the Loop for Hydrogen Storage: Facile Regeneration of NaBH 4 from Its Hydrolytic Product

Abstract:AbstractSodium borohydride (NaBH4) is among the most studied hydrogen storage materials because it is able to deliver high‐purity H2 at room temperature with controllable kinetics via hydrolysis; however, its regeneration from the hydrolytic product has been challenging. Now, a facile method is reported to regenerate NaBH4 with high yield and low costs. The hydrolytic product NaBO2 in aqueous solution reacts with CO2, forming Na2B4O7⋅10 H2O and Na2CO3, both of which are ball‐milled with Mg under ambient conditions to form NaBH4 in high yield (close to 80 %). Compared with previous studies, this approach avoids expensive reducing agents such as MgH2, bypasses the energy‐intensive dehydration procedure to remove water from Na2B4O7⋅10 H2O, and does not require high‐pressure H2 gas, therefore leading to much reduced costs. This method is expected to effectively close the loop of NaBH4 regeneration and hydrolysis, enabling a wide deployment of NaBH4 for hydrogen storage.

The hydrogen yield, mHGR (maximum hydrogen generation rate) and reaction stability can be adjusted by changing the samples' compositions, milling time and water/mixture ratios. The Mg-9 wt.%LiBH4-1 wt.% AlCl3 composite reaches a conversion yield of 87%, corresponding to 1083.5 ml H-2 g(-1) (composite), and the mHGR is 1256.9 ml min(-1) g(-1) in 60 min at 298 K. The synergistic effect between Mg and LiBH4 as well as the catalytic effects of LiBH4-AlCl3 additives both contribute to the improved hydrolytic performances. Compared with the hydrolysis of single Mg or Mg-LiBH4 system, the Mg-LiBH4-AlCl3 mixture has greatly improved its hydrogen yield and mHGR.
