Abstract:Photocatalysis appears to be an appealing approach for environmental remediation including pollutants degradation in water, air, and/or soil, due to the utilization of renewable and sustainable source of energy, i.e., solar energy. However, their broad applications remain lagging due to the challenges in pollutant degradation efficiency, large-scale catalyst production, and stability. In recent decades, massive efforts have been devoted to advance the photocatalysis technology for improved environmental remediation. In this review, the latest progress in this aspect is overviewed, particularly, the strategies for improved light sensitivity, charge separation, and hybrid approaches. We also emphasize the low efficiency and poor stability issues with the current photocatalytic systems. Finally, we provide future suggestions to further enhance the photocatalyst performance and lower its large-scale production cost. This review aims to provide valuable insights into the fundamental science and technical engineering of photocatalysis in environmental remediation.

Abstract:Heterogeneous photocatalysis has long been considered to be one of the most promising approaches to tackling the myriad environmental issues. However, there are still many challenges for designing efficient and cost-effective photocatalysts and photocatalytic degradation systems for application in practical environmental remediation. In this review, we first systematically introduced the fundamental principles on the photocatalytic pollutant degradation. Then, the important considerations in the design of photocatalytic degradation systems are carefully addressed, including charge carrier dynamics, catalytic selectivity, photocatalyst stability, pollutant adsorption and photodegradation kinetics. Especially, the underlying mechanisms are thoroughly reviewed, including investigation of oxygen reduction properties and identification of reactive oxygen species and key intermediates. This review in environmental photocatalysis may inspire exciting new directions and methods for designing, fabricating and evaluating photocatalytic degradation systems for better environmental remediation and possibly other relevant fields, such as photocatalytic disinfection, water oxidation, and selective organic transformations.

Abstract:Heterogeneous photocatalysis, an advanced oxidation process, has garnered extensive attention in the field of environmental remediation because it involves the direct utilization of solar energy for the removal of numerous pollutants. However, the application of heterogeneous photocatalysis in environmental remediation has not achieved the expected consequences due to enormous challenges such as low photocatalytic efficiencies and high costs of heterogeneous photocatalysts in large-scale practical applications. Furthermore, pollutants in the natural environment, including water, air, and solid phases, are diverse and complex. Therefore, extensive efforts should be made to better understand and apply heterogeneous photocatalysis for environmental remediation. Herein, the fundamentals of heterogeneous photocatalysis for environmental remediation are introduced. Then, potential semiconductors and their modification strategies for environmental photocatalysis are systematically presented. Finally, conclusions and prospects are briefly summarized, and the direction for the future development of environmental photocatalysis is explored. This review may provide reference directions toward understanding, researching, and designing photocatalytic remediation systems for various environmental pollutants.

Abstract:The widely investigated heterogeneous photocatalysis offers an environmentally friendly, efficient, and versatile solution for several environmental problems. Among others, the removal of harmful organic pollutants and the generation of H2 via water splitting are well-known and most widely studied applications. The process is based on the charge separation caused by the excitation of semiconductor photocatalyst via photon absorption. Due to the intensive development of material science, in addition to the well-known TiO2 and ZnO, several new semiconductor materials have been designed and synthesized to increase the efficiency of heterogeneous photocatalysis and utilization of solar and/or visible light. This chapter describes the principles and mechanisms of heterogeneous photocatalysis, including the formation of photogenerated charge carriers, the role of different reactive species, and the effect of key parameters on the efficiency.

Abstract:Renewable fuels and environmental remediation are of paramount importance in today's world due to escalating concerns about climate change, pollution, and the finite nature of fossil fuels. Transitioning to sustainable energy sources and addressing environmental pollution has become an urgent necessity. Photocatalysis, particularly harnessing solar energy to drive chemical reactions for environmental remediation and clean fuel production, holds significant promise among emerging technologies. As a benchmark semiconductor in photocatalysis, TiO 2 photocatalyst offers an excellent solution for environmental remediation and serves as a key tool in energy conversion and chemical synthesis. Despite its status as the default photocatalyst, TiO 2 suffers from drawbacks such as a high recombination rate of charge carriers, low electrical conductivity, and limited absorption in the visible light spectrum. This review provides an in-depth exploration of the fundamental principles of photocatalytic reactions and presents recent advancements in the development of TiO 2 photocatalysts. It specifically focuses on strategic approaches aimed at enhancing the performance of TiO 2 photocatalysts, including improving visible light absorption for efficient solar energy harvesting, enhancing charge separation and transportation efficiency, and ensuring stability for robust photocatalysis. Additionally, the review delves into the application of photodegradation and photocatalysis, particularly in critical processes such as water splitting, carbon dioxide reduction, nitrogen fixation, hydrogen peroxide generation, and alcohol oxidation. It also highlights the novel use of TiO 2 in plastic polymerization and degradation, showcasing its potential for converting plastic waste into valuable chemicals and fuels, thereby offering sustainable waste management solutions. By addressing these essential areas, the review offers valuable insights into the potential of TiO 2 photocatalysis for addressing pressing environmental and energy challenges. Furthermore, the review encompasses the application of TiO 2 photochromic systems, expanding its scope to include other innovative research and applications. Finally, it addresses the underlying challenges and provides perspectives on the future development of TiO 2 photocatalysts. Through addressing these issues and implementing innovative strategies, TiO 2 photocatalysis can continue to evolve and play a pivotal role in sustainable energy and environmental applications.

Abstract:Although photocatalysis theory and technology are relatively mature, few real practical cases of photocatalysis are studied. This review discusses the mechanism and design philosophy of photocatalytic membranes, introduces some common fabrication methods including in situ growth, coating, spinning, casting, and foaming methods, explores the photocatalytic performances of different photocatalytic membranes, and includes the future trends of photocatalytic membranes. With the serious pollution of water resources in the process of social development, green and environmentally friendly photocatalytic technology has gradually attracted widespread attention. Though photocatalytic theory and technology are relatively mature, the current research is mainly focused on powders and less on the photocatalytic membranes, and few real practical cases of photocatalysis are studied. To summarize and update these advanced studies, this paper introduces the latest progress in photocatalytic membranes including discussing the differences of photocatalytic mechanism between free and fixed photocatalytic systems and the design philosophy of photocatalytic membranes. At the same time, some common fabrication methods, including in situ growth, coating, spinning, casting, and foaming methods are analyzed. Besides, the photocatalytic performances of different photocatalytic membranes in the actual environment and their use conditions are explored. Finally, a critical view of future trends is included. The explanation of the photocatalytic mechanism, large‐scale production, and the practicality of photocatalytic products are all problems that need to be solved in the future.

Abstract:In the quest for effective solutions to address Environ. Pollut. and meet the escalating energy demands, heterojunction photocatalysts have emerged as a captivating and versatile technology. These photocatalysts have garnered significant interest due to their wide-ranging applications, including wastewater treatment, air purification, CO2 capture, and hydrogen generation via water splitting. This technique harnesses the power of semiconductors, which are activated under light illumination, providing the necessary energy for catalytic reactions. With visible light constituting a substantial portion (46%) of the solar spectrum, the development of visible-light-driven semiconductors has become imperative. Heterojunction photocatalysts offer a promising strategy to overcome the limitations associated with activating semiconductors under visible light. In this comprehensive review, we present the recent advancements in the field of photocatalytic degradation of contaminants across diverse media, as well as the remarkable progress made in renewable energy production. Moreover, we delve into the crucial role played by various operating parameters in influencing the photocatalytic performance of heterojunction systems. Finally, we address emerging challenges and propose novel perspectives to provide valuable insights for future advancements in this dynamic research domain. By unraveling the potential of heterojunction photocatalysts, this review contributes to the broader understanding of their applications and paves the way for exciting avenues of exploration and innovation.

Abstract:Photocatalysis as represented by titanium dioxide can make many toxic organic pollutants degraded or mineralized into biogradable small molecules or carbon dioxide, the process involving active species such as hydroxyl radicals. This article, based on the author's group work, attempts to outline the recent development in photocatalysis or photosenstiztation of titanium dioxide, iron (hydr)oxides, polyoxometalates (POM) and metal phthalocyanines (MPc) for water treatment. The emphasis is put on the semiconductor photocatalysis by titanium dioxide. The discussion includes: (1) detection of singlet oxygen, hydroxyl and superoxide radicals, and various mechanisms proposed for their formation, (2) surface modification of catalyst with metal ions, POM and fluoride ions, and possible mechansims for their effects on the production of reactive species, and (3) immobilization of MPc onto ionic exchange resin and organoclay, and the influence on sorption and visible light induced degradation of organic pollutants in aqueous medium.

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is an environmentally friendly versatile oxidant, which has been used in chemical industry, medical, energy, and environmental fields. Photocatalytic H2O2 production is a sustainable, safe, and green process; however, the high recombination of electron-hole pairs, low visible light utilization, and poor product selectivity still limit the practical applications of photocatalytic H2O2 production. Previous reviews on photocatalytic H2O2 generation focus more on the photocatalysts but less on the design strategy of the photo-catalytic systems, which stems from the critical steps involving the photocatalytic process, i.e., light absorption, charge separation, and surface redox reaction. From this point of review, this review article introduces the strategies for improving the H2O2 production efficiency based on the above three critical processes. Moreover, the environmental applications of photocatalytic H2O2 generation including disinfection and pollutant degra-dation are discussed. The challenges and prospects in photocatalytic H2O2 production and its future environ-mental applications are also envisioned.

Abstract:Innovative and efficient strategies are urgently needed for wastewater treatment and environmental remediation. The photocatalytic degradation properties of photo-responsive nanomaterials (NMs) have become a prime candidate due to their low negative impact and photo-adjustability. Photocatalytic NMs vary in their degradation of different pollutants depending on the type of synthetic material, excitation light source, and physicochemical properties. Essentially, photocatalytic NMs excited by light produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) or metal ions that can degrade complex structure pollutants. Therefore, this review summarises the recent advances of photocatalytic NMs in the environmental application within the last 3 years, focusing on the development schemes, structural analyses, photocatalytic mechanisms, and the degradation effects of dyes, antibiotics, pesticides, phenolic compounds, metals, hormones, and other contaminants. The limitations and future directions are also explained. This review hopes to provide a possible pathway for the subsequent development of novel and efficient photocatalytic NMs to cope with complex and variable polluted environments.

Abstract:It is well-documented that large-scale pollution generated by human activity has a dramatic impact on ecosystems. In this context, removing harmful chemicals via photocatalysis has tremendous potential as a depollution method, utilizing freely available solar light and catalytic materials with low or negligible ecotoxicity. The main drawbacks, which aren't often addressed in the available literature, are the formation of harmful intermediate products, low reaction rates, limited catalyst stability, and difficult catalyst recovery. In most cases, published works assess the efficiency of tested photocatalysts from pollutant degradation studies, whereas identifying and quantifying by-products is not often conducted. This review summarizes the recent advances reported for the photocatalytic removal of some organic (e.g., alcohols, carboxylic acids, volatile organic compounds, phenol) and inorganic (e.g., NO3−) contaminants. The efficiency of various UV- and visible-light active photocatalysts and the reaction degradation pathways were explained, emphasizing the main factors contributing to their mineralization. The reaction mechanisms, the identification and quantification of degradation intermediates, and the implication of reactive active species (ROS) were discussed and analyzed for each category of model target pollutant. Additionally, the actual challenges and future photocatalytic approaches to improve environmental remediation were presented.

Abstract:Residual pollutants in the water treatment process restrict the advanced treatment and purification of wastewater, because most of them have stable structures, and some are not easily to be enriched. Photocatalytic oxidation technology can directly use solar energy to drive a series of chemical reactions, which has advantages such as low energy consumption, mild reaction conditions and rarely secondary pollution. It is an effective way to solve the organic pollution problem in wastewater treatment. The key to this process is to find and design efficient photocatalysts. The current photocatalytic materials mainly include inorganic semiconductors and metal organic frameworks (MOFs). They have been studied for pollutants degradation, hydrogen evolution, CO2 reduction, and organic transformation. But, most of these catalysts have not been used in real application. In this paper, recent research advances in MOFs photocatalysts and the key factors affecting their photocatalytic efficiency were critically reviewed. It is believed that the pursuit of more efficient photocatalyst needs to be considered from the adsorption‐photocatalytic mechanism, redox‐free radical mechanism, valence‐level regulation mechanism and energy transfer mechanism of photocatalysis. It is very necessary to research and develop nanoscale and quantum level mixed valence MOFs photocatalysts, which are constructed by strong electron‐donating groups. Strategic review: Recent research advances in MOFs photocatalysts and the key factors affecting their photocatalytic efficiency are critically reviewed. Abstract:Heterogeneous photocatalysis has been intensively studied in recent decades because it only requires photonic energy to activate the chemical conversion contrasting with conventional catalysis which needs heat for thermo-activation. Over the years, the theories for photochemical activity of photocatalyst including photo-induced redox reaction and super-hydrophilic conversion of TiO2 itself have been established. The progress in academic research significantly promotes its practical applications, including the field of photocatalytic construction and building materials. TiO2 modified building materials are most popular because TiO2 has been traditionally used as a white pigment. The major applications of TiO2 based photocatalytic building materials include environmental pollution remediation, self-cleaning and self-disinfecting. The advantage of using solar light and rainwater as driving force has opened a new domain for environmentally friendly building materials. In this paper, the basic reaction mechanisms on photocatalyst surface under the irradiation of ultraviolet and their corresponding applications in building and construction materials are reviewed. The problems faced in practical applications and the trends for future development are also discussed.

Abstract:Photoinduced reduction and oxidation, the important processes in photocatalytic water splitting and organic degradation, have generated increasing interest to address the energy and environmental issues. In this review, the recent developments in bandgap and interfacial engineering for enhanced light absorption, efficient charge separation and interfacial reaction are focused toward the applications in photocatalytic water splitting and organic degradation. In photoinduced reduction for hydrogen evolution, three major strategies are discussed: cocatalysts, sacrificial agents and heterojunctions. In photoinduced oxidation for organic degradation, three types of emerging pollutants of current concerns are highlighted: organic dyes, pharmaceuticals and volatile organic compounds. The key challenges of promising photocatalysts are discussed for future development and practical application.

Abstract:Photocatalysis is one of the most important chemical methods to mitigate the energy and environmental crisis via converting inexhaustible solar energy into clean chemical potential. The general history of the development of photocatalysis based on porous metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is simply divided into three branches with a focus placed on the distinct structural role of the photocatalytic center: the inorganic cluster nodes, the organic linkers, and the guests in the pores of MOFs. In each branch, these photocatalytic centers are considered to be monodispersed within the crystal lattices with the other two structure roles regularly distributed to isolate the active centers and sometimes to provide more functions other than photoactivity. This distinctive nature has rendered MOFs as promising candidates for photocatalysis not only because they combine the benefits of heterogeneous catalysis and homogeneous catalysis but also because they facilitate the possibility of merging multifunctional catalytic sites for concerted or cascade photocatalysis. The design strategy and improvement approaches for MOF-based photocatalysts are also introduced with an emphasis on structure. Our intention is for this comprehensive view of MOFs-involved photocatalysts to inspire new ideas for designing heterogeneous photocatalysts toward the better utilization of solar energy.

Abstract:Continuous photocatalysis via photo-charging and dark-discharging presents a paradigm shift in conventional photocatalysis with the requirement of continuous illumination to maintain the catalytic activity. This is expected to meet the ever-increasing demand for sustainable development of energy and environment driven by natural day-night cycles. Substantial advances in continuous photocatalysis for various environmental applications under light-dark cycles have been witnessed during the last decade. However, there lacks a systematic and critical review on basic but important information of continuous photocatalysis for environmental remediation, challenging robust scientific progress of this technology towards potential practical use. Here, the general description of continuous photocatalysis involving energy storage mechanisms (hole and electron storage) and characterizations (electron storage behaviors, release behaviors and storage capacity) has been first introduced. Importantly, the remediation performance and mechanism of continuous photocatalysis for environmental applications are qualitatively and quantitatively demonstrated, including chemical pollutant oxidation and reduction, microbial pathogen inactivation, and multifunctional treatment. In addition, key factors influencing its remediation performance are analyzed, for the first time, from both operational and environmental views. The ample opportunities in the field of continuous photocatalysis for sustainable environmental remediation are also pointed out, calling for more efforts to fill current knowledge gaps in the future.

However, the design of photoreactors lags behind the development of photocatalysts, which strongly limit the widespread use of photocatalysis technology in environmental remediation. The nanoparticles separation, mass transfer limitation, and photonic efficiency have always been problematic and restrict the high photocatalytic efficiency of photoreactors. To overcome these bottleneck problems, the most popular or newfangled designs of photoreactors employed in air and water treatment has been reviewed. The purpose of this review is to systematize designs and synthesis of innovative TiO2-based photoreactors and provides detailed survey and discussion on the enhanced mechanism of photocatalytic performance in different TiO2-based photoreactors. The most studied photoreactors are the following: packed bed reactor, film reactor and membrane reactor, which have some limitations and advantages. A comprehensive comparison between the different photocatalytic performance of TiO2-based photoreactors is presented. This work aims to summarize the progress of TiO2-based photoreactors and provides useful information for the further research and development of photocatalysis for water and air purification.
