Abstract:Semiconductor photocatalysis plays a critical role in the environment protection and future energy development. (Photo)electrochemical measurements are powerful tools for studying the kinetics and mechanism of photocatalytic reactions, since photo-carriers, as reactants of photocatalytic reactions, are involved in the interfacial transfer and recombination of semiconductor/electrolyte interface. This review describes the part of our recent results regarding aqueous photocatalytic decontamination obtained by these methods, and the focus of future work in this field is suggested.

Abstract:It is well-documented that large-scale pollution generated by human activity has a dramatic impact on ecosystems. In this context, removing harmful chemicals via photocatalysis has tremendous potential as a depollution method, utilizing freely available solar light and catalytic materials with low or negligible ecotoxicity. The main drawbacks, which aren't often addressed in the available literature, are the formation of harmful intermediate products, low reaction rates, limited catalyst stability, and difficult catalyst recovery. In most cases, published works assess the efficiency of tested photocatalysts from pollutant degradation studies, whereas identifying and quantifying by-products is not often conducted. This review summarizes the recent advances reported for the photocatalytic removal of some organic (e.g., alcohols, carboxylic acids, volatile organic compounds, phenol) and inorganic (e.g., NO3−) contaminants. The efficiency of various UV- and visible-light active photocatalysts and the reaction degradation pathways were explained, emphasizing the main factors contributing to their mineralization. The reaction mechanisms, the identification and quantification of degradation intermediates, and the implication of reactive active species (ROS) were discussed and analyzed for each category of model target pollutant. Additionally, the actual challenges and future photocatalytic approaches to improve environmental remediation were presented.

Abstract:Semiconductor-based photocatalytic reactions are a practical class of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) to address energy scarcity and environmental pollution. By utilizing solar energy as a clean, abundant, and renewable source, this process offers numerous advantages, including high efficiency, eco-friendliness, and low cost. In this review, we present several methods to construct various photocatalyst systems with excellent visible light absorption and efficient charge carrier separation ability through the optimization of materials design and reaction conditions. Then it introduces the fundamentals of photocatalysis in both clean energy generation and environmental remediation. In the other parts, we introduce various approaches to enhance photocatalytic activity by applying different strategies, including semiconductor structure modification (e.g., morphology regulation, co-catalysts decoration, doping, defect engineering, surface sensitization, heterojunction construction) and tuning and optimizing reaction conditions (such as photocatalyst concentration, initial contaminant concentration, pH, reaction temperature, light intensity, charge-carrier scavengers). Then, a comparative study on the photocatalytic performance of the various recently examined photocatalysts applied in both clean energy production and environmental remediation will be discussed. To realize these goals, different photocatalytic reactions including H2 production via water splitting, CO2 reduction to value-added products, dye, and drug photodegradation to lessen toxic chemicals, will be presented. Subsequently, we report dual-functional photocatalysis systems for simultaneous energy production and pollutant photodegradation for efficient reactions. Then, a brief discussion about the industrial and economical applications of photocatalysts is described. The report follows by introducing the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning in the design and selection of an innovative photocatalyst in energy and environmental issues. Finally, a summary and future research directions toward developing photocatalytic systems with significantly improved efficiency and stability will be provided.

Abstract:Increasing demand for energy and environmental degradation are the most serious problems facing the man. An interesting issue that can contribute to solving these problems is the use of photocatalysis. According to literature, solar energy in the presence of a photocatalyst can effectively (i) be converted into electricity/fuel, (ii) break down chemical and microbial pollutants, and (iii) help water purification. Therefore, the search for new, efficient, and stable photocatalysts with high application potential is a point of great interest. The photocatalysts must be characterized by the ability to absorb radiation from a wide spectral range of light, the appropriate position of the semiconductor energy bands in relation to the redox reaction potentials, and the long diffusion path of charge carriers, besides the thermodynamic, electrochemical, and photoelectrochemical stabilities. Meeting these requirements by semiconductors is very difficult. Therefore, efforts are being made to increase the efficiency of photo processes by changing the electron structure, surface morphology, and crystal structure of semiconductors. This paper reviews the recent literature covering the synthesis and application of nanomaterials in photocatalysis.

Abstract:Although heterogeneous photocatalysis has been recognized as a promising technology for decontaminating and disinfecting municipal and industrial wastewater over the last few decades, it has not yet successfully transitioned from laboratory-scale research to real-world applications. This limited progress is attributed to inherent physicochemical properties of most photocatalytic materials available, which exhibit reduced photoefficiency under visible light irradiation, along with multiple engineering considerations. This comprehensive review delves into the intricate dynamics of photocatalytic reactions kinetics, exploring several types of photocatalytic reactors and elucidating the significance of materials employed in photocatalytic wastewater treatment. This critical survey systematically examines the effectiveness of different materials such as titania, zinc oxide and graphitic carbon nitride which are commercially applied for different reactor systems. Understanding the role of these materials for photocatalytic reactions is essential to address the challenges associated with wastewater treatment. Furthermore, the discussion extends beyond the technical aspects to encompass the broader landscape of challenges hindering the commercialization and widespread adoption of photocatalytic technologies. By critically evaluating these challenges, the minireview aims to provide valuable insights for researchers, engineers, and policymakers seeking to advance and implement photocatalytic wastewater treatment on a broader scale. This synthesis of knowledge consolidates the current state of the field and outlines future prospects for overcoming barriers and optimizing the potential of photocatalytic processes in environmental remediation.

Abstract:This study comprehensively assesses the key photocatalytic characteristics such as reaction rate, quantum yield, space yield, energy consumption, and figure of merit of 169 nanocomposites based on 2D materials and metal oxide semiconductors. The major obstacles for creating efficient 2D‐metal oxide semiconductors are discussed using available literature data, and potential future directions are suggested. Photocatalysis plays a crucial role in tackling environmental challenges by efficiently breaking down organic pollutants in water. This study highlights the significant contribution of 2D materials in advancing photocatalytic technology for sustainable environmental remediation. It explores various aspects of photocatalytic processes, including important performance metrics such as reaction rate, quantum yield, space yield, energy consumption, and figure of merit. The main focus is on 2D materials‐based structures, such as metal oxide supported on graphene and graphene oxides, MXene, or MoS2 (referred as 2D‐MO NPs), as well as more complex nanocomposite configurations (referred as 2D‐MO NCs). Furthermore, the research examines the complex interaction between compositional and operational factors that influence photocatalytic activity, as well as different photocatalytic mechanisms and active species. Finally, it addresses the current limitations of photocatalytic organic pollutants degradation for field applications and discusses the prospects of this technology.

Abstract:The application of the photocatalysis process in pollution control has attracted a lot of interest due to the growing seriousness of environmental water problems. Photocatalysis technology has quickly risen to the forefront of sustainable wastewater treatments thanks to rapid advances in the development of innovative photocatalysts, in which solar energy can be stored, transported, and converted into chemical form. This comprehensive report summarizes the latest progress in the design and application of semiconductor photocatalysis systems for boosted removal of environmental pollutants and enhanced photoreaction mechanisms. The current work introduces deep concepts about the electron transfer mechanism that were not discussed in previous works, supported by experimental characterizations and DFT theoretical calculations. Furthermore, the recent advances in the detoxification of wastewater pollutants and the generation of reactive species have been highlighted and reinforced by a huge amount of impactful literature. Beyond that, the degradation pathways, structure optimization, and toxicity assessment of organic pollutants have been argued using LC-MS, DFT calculation, and the Toxicity Estimation Software Tool. Intensively, the latest developments in the design and construction of heterojunction systems, like Z-scheme heterojunction, Schottky heterojunction, Type I/Type II heterojunctions, and p-n heterojunction, were described in detail. The experimental and DFT theoretical technologies confirmed that the creation of the heterojunction plays a crucial role in accelerating electron migration and upgrading the photocatalytic mechanism. On the other hand, our review discusses some common types of composite photocatalysts, like metal oxide-based photocatalysts, bismuth-based photocatalysts, and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-based photocatalysts. Moreover, several environmental factors that impact the photocatalytic reaction, including pH, pollutant concentration, photocatalyst loading, the effect of scavengers, and light power, are explained in detail. This summary may be helpful for readers in providing comprehensive information about photocatalysis systems and their sustainable advantages.

Abstract:Wastewaters often contain toxic organic pollutants with a possible adverse effect on human health and aquatic life upon exposure. Persistent organic pollutants such as dyes and pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and other chemicals are gaining extensive attention. Water treatment utilizing photocatalysis has recently received a lot of interest. Photocatalysis is cutting-edge, alternative technology. It has various advantages, including functioning at normal temperatures and atmospheric pressure, cheap prices, no secondary waste creation, and being readily available and easily accessible. This review presented a comprehensive overview of the advances in the application of the photocatalytic process in the treatment of highly polluted industrial wastewater. The analysis of various literature revealed that TiO 2 -based photocatalysts are highly effective in degrading organic pollutants from wastewater compared to other forms of wastewater treatment technologies. The electrical structure of a semiconductor plays a vital role in the photocatalyst's mechanism. The morphology of a photocatalyst is determined by the synthesis method, chemical content, and technical characteristics. The scaled-up of the photoreactors will significantly help in curbing the effect of organic pollutants in wastewater.

Abstract:The occurrence of emerging micropollutants (pharmaceuticals, pesticides, personal care products, industrial compounds, etc.) in the environment is considered a major threat to human health and aquatic ecosystems. These micropollutants enter the environment through anthropogenic actions and have been identified in surface, ground, waste, and even in drinking water, in quantities ranging from ng L −1 to μg L −1 . Currently, the pollution of the global water cycle with persistent organic pollutants remains one of the major challenges of the twenty-first century. Most of these organic substances are only partially removed by conventional wastewater treatment plants. Particularly, considerable amounts of pharmaceuticals are used in human and veterinary medicine, which are not efficiently removed during conventional wastewater treatments and subsequently continuously enter freshwater systems and even agricultural crops. Accordingly, we have evaluated the effectivity of TiO 2 as a photocatalyst in tandem with Na 2 S 2 O 8 as an oxidant for the treatment of a wastewater effluent polluted with pharmaceutical (atenolol, carbamazepine, clarithromycin, erythromycin, irbesartan, and ketoprofen) residues. Results show that the use of solar heterogeneous photocatalysis by means of band-gap semiconductor materials, especially TiO 2 in combination with a strong oxidant such as Na 2 S 2 O 8 , significantly enhances their disappearance from the wastewater effluent. However, the selected pharmaceuticals show a slow degradation in wastewater effluent compared to pure water indicating that the occurrence of dissolved salts and organic carbon in wastewater effluent noticeably slows down the efficiency of the treatment. A single first-order model satisfactorily explains the photocatalytic degradation of the compounds studied for both, pure and wastewater. In the case of wastewater effluent, the highest DT 50 values were observed for macrolides (13 and 16 min for erythromycin and clarithromycin, respectively), while the other compounds studied showed DT 50 values below 10 min. This methodology has a notorious interest in some areas of the Mediterranean basin with water shortage, such as SE of Spain, where more than 3000 h of sunlight per year are recovered.

Abstract:Photocatalysis appears to be an appealing approach for environmental remediation including pollutants degradation in water, air, and/or soil, due to the utilization of renewable and sustainable source of energy, i.e., solar energy. However, their broad applications remain lagging due to the challenges in pollutant degradation efficiency, large-scale catalyst production, and stability. In recent decades, massive efforts have been devoted to advance the photocatalysis technology for improved environmental remediation. In this review, the latest progress in this aspect is overviewed, particularly, the strategies for improved light sensitivity, charge separation, and hybrid approaches. We also emphasize the low efficiency and poor stability issues with the current photocatalytic systems. Finally, we provide future suggestions to further enhance the photocatalyst performance and lower its large-scale production cost. This review aims to provide valuable insights into the fundamental science and technical engineering of photocatalysis in environmental remediation.

Abstract:In the quest for effective solutions to address Environ. Pollut. and meet the escalating energy demands, heterojunction photocatalysts have emerged as a captivating and versatile technology. These photocatalysts have garnered significant interest due to their wide-ranging applications, including wastewater treatment, air purification, CO2 capture, and hydrogen generation via water splitting. This technique harnesses the power of semiconductors, which are activated under light illumination, providing the necessary energy for catalytic reactions. With visible light constituting a substantial portion (46%) of the solar spectrum, the development of visible-light-driven semiconductors has become imperative. Heterojunction photocatalysts offer a promising strategy to overcome the limitations associated with activating semiconductors under visible light. In this comprehensive review, we present the recent advancements in the field of photocatalytic degradation of contaminants across diverse media, as well as the remarkable progress made in renewable energy production. Moreover, we delve into the crucial role played by various operating parameters in influencing the photocatalytic performance of heterojunction systems. Finally, we address emerging challenges and propose novel perspectives to provide valuable insights for future advancements in this dynamic research domain. By unraveling the potential of heterojunction photocatalysts, this review contributes to the broader understanding of their applications and paves the way for exciting avenues of exploration and innovation.

Abstract:Solar energy is a renewable resource that can supply our energy needs in the long term. A semiconductor photocatalysis that is capable of utilizing solar energy has appealed to considerable interests for recent decades, owing to the ability to aim at environmental problems and produce renewal energy. Much effort has been put into the synthesis of a highly efficient semiconductor photocatalyst to promote its real application potential. Hence, we reviewed the most advanced methods and strategies in terms of (i) broadening the light absorption wavelengths, (ii) design of active reaction sites, and (iii) control of the electron-hole (e--h+) recombination, while these three processes could be influenced by remodeling the crystal lattice, surface, and interface. Additionally, we individually examined their current applications in energy conversion (i.e., hydrogen evolution, CO2 reduction, nitrogen fixation, and oriented synthesis) and environmental remediation (i.e., air purification and wastewater treatment). Overall, in this review, we particularly focused on advanced photocatalytic activity with simultaneous wastewater decontamination and energy conversion and further enriched the mechanism by proposing the electron flow and substance conversion. Finally, this review offers the prospects of semiconductor photocatalysts in the following three vital (distinct) aspects: (i) the large-scale preparation of highly efficient photocatalysts, (ii) the development of sustainable photocatalysis systems, and (iii) the optimization of the photocatalytic process for practical application.

Abstract:With the environmental safety becoming the research focus, water environmental security, as an updating research direction has also been the concern. Nano-titania photocatalysis can prevent environmental pollution from the sources and ensure the fundamental productions in the industry. The applications of nano particle photocatalytic technology in environmental safety are reviewed. Emphasis is put on the applications of nano-titania photocatalytic technology in wastewater treatment, and the latest achievements in scientific research of nano particle photocatalytic technology in wastewater treatment are given. Besides, it is also pointed out that the technology of using nano-titania as photocatalyst has some obvious disadvantages in the actual treatment process of environmental safety. Lastly, the development trend of photocatalytic technology is discussed.

Abstract:Heterogeneous photocatalysis has long been considered to be one of the most promising approaches to tackling the myriad environmental issues. However, there are still many challenges for designing efficient and cost-effective photocatalysts and photocatalytic degradation systems for application in practical environmental remediation. In this review, we first systematically introduced the fundamental principles on the photocatalytic pollutant degradation. Then, the important considerations in the design of photocatalytic degradation systems are carefully addressed, including charge carrier dynamics, catalytic selectivity, photocatalyst stability, pollutant adsorption and photodegradation kinetics. Especially, the underlying mechanisms are thoroughly reviewed, including investigation of oxygen reduction properties and identification of reactive oxygen species and key intermediates. This review in environmental photocatalysis may inspire exciting new directions and methods for designing, fabricating and evaluating photocatalytic degradation systems for better environmental remediation and possibly other relevant fields, such as photocatalytic disinfection, water oxidation, and selective organic transformations.
