Abstract:Photocatalysis appears to be an appealing approach for environmental remediation including pollutants degradation in water, air, and/or soil, due to the utilization of renewable and sustainable source of energy, i.e., solar energy. However, their broad applications remain lagging due to the challenges in pollutant degradation efficiency, large-scale catalyst production, and stability. In recent decades, massive efforts have been devoted to advance the photocatalysis technology for improved environmental remediation. In this review, the latest progress in this aspect is overviewed, particularly, the strategies for improved light sensitivity, charge separation, and hybrid approaches. We also emphasize the low efficiency and poor stability issues with the current photocatalytic systems. Finally, we provide future suggestions to further enhance the photocatalyst performance and lower its large-scale production cost. This review aims to provide valuable insights into the fundamental science and technical engineering of photocatalysis in environmental remediation.

Abstract:The design and development of visible light photocatalysts for wastewater remediation applications have received considerable attention due to their ability to operate under low energy, renewable and clean. The application of ZnO nanostructures as a photocatalyst in various photodegradation applications has shown to be of continued interest. However, ZnO possessed several setbacks, including their large bandgap, which require high energy for the excitation of the electrons. To overcome these limitations, doping ZnO photocatalysts has been confirmed to enhance their photocatalytic performance by narrowing their large bandgap, thus opening up numerous possibilities. Doped ZnO nanostructures have found extensive use in pollution control applications as visible light photocatalysts. The doping with metal or non-metal elements, metal oxides, and inclusion with other semiconductors to form a hybrid heterojunction photocatalyst are among the strategies employed. This mini review summarizes recent progress in the strategies employed in the preparation of doped ZnO photocatalysts for the degradation of various organic pollutants, including synthetic dye molecules and emerging contaminants. Their application in antibacterial performance is also briefly explained. Additionally, the degradation mechanism of selected pollutants is also discussed. Finally, the advantages of using doped ZnO photocatalyst for pollution remediation are discussed. Considering the issue of water security, this review is timely to address the impending problem that the world is facing. Hopefully, this article can assist readers in gaining a better understanding of doped ZnO photocatalysts.

Abstract:Researchers have focused on efficient techniques for degrading hazardous organic pollutants due to their negative impacts on ecological systems, necessitating immediate remediation. Specifically, TiO2-based photocatalysts, a wide-bandgap semiconductor material, have been extensively studied for their application in environmental remediation. However, the extensive band gap energy and speedy reattachment of electron (e-) and hole (h+) pairs in bare TiO2 are considered major disadvantages for photocatalysis. This review extensively focuses on the combination of semiconducting photocatalysts for commercial outcomes to develop efficient heterojunctions with high photocatalytic activity by minimizing the e-/h+ recombination rate. The improved activity of these heterojunctions is due to their greater surface area, rich active sites, narrow band gap, and high light-harvesting tendency. In this context, strategies for increasing visible light activity, including doping with metals and non-metals, surface modifications, morphology control, composite formation, heterojunction formation, bandgap engineering, surface plasmon resonance, and optimizing reaction conditions are discussed. Furthermore, this review critically assesses the latest developments in TiO2 photocatalysts for the efficient decomposition of various organic contaminants from wastewater, such as pharmaceutical waste, dyes, pesticides, aromatic hydrocarbons, and halo compounds. This review implies that doping is an effective, economical, and simple process for TiO2 nanostructures and that a heterogeneous photocatalytic mechanism is an eco-friendly substitute for the removal of various pollutants. This review provides valuable insights for researchers involved in the development of efficient photocatalysts for environmental remediation.

Abstract:Water pollution has become a critical issue because of the Industrial Revolution, growing populations, extended droughts, and climate change. Therefore, advanced technologies for wastewater remediation are urgently needed. Water contaminants are generally classified as microorganisms and inorganic/organic pollutants. Inorganic pollutants are toxic and some of them are carcinogenic materials, such as cadmium, arsenic, chromium, cadmium, lead, and mercury. Organic pollutants are contained in various materials, including organic dyes, pesticides, personal care products, detergents, and industrial organic wastes. Nanostructured materials could be potential candidates for photocatalytic reduction and for photodegradation of organic pollutants in wastewater since they have unique physical, chemical, and optical properties. Enhanced photocatalytic performance of nanostructured semiconductors can be achieved using numerous techniques; nanostructured semiconductors can be doped with different species, transition metals, noble metals or nonmetals, or a luminescence agent. Furthermore, another technique to enhance the photocatalytic performance of nanostructured semiconductors is doping with materials that have a narrow band gap. Nanostructure modification, surface engineering, and heterojunction/homojunction production all take significant time and effort. In this review, I report on the synthesis and characterization of nanostructured materials, and we discuss the photocatalytic performance of these nanostructured materials in reducing environmental pollutants.

Abstract:Residual pollutants in the water treatment process restrict the advanced treatment and purification of wastewater, because most of them have stable structures, and some are not easily to be enriched. Photocatalytic oxidation technology can directly use solar energy to drive a series of chemical reactions, which has advantages such as low energy consumption, mild reaction conditions and rarely secondary pollution. It is an effective way to solve the organic pollution problem in wastewater treatment. The key to this process is to find and design efficient photocatalysts. The current photocatalytic materials mainly include inorganic semiconductors and metal organic frameworks (MOFs). They have been studied for pollutants degradation, hydrogen evolution, CO2 reduction, and organic transformation. But, most of these catalysts have not been used in real application. In this paper, recent research advances in MOFs photocatalysts and the key factors affecting their photocatalytic efficiency were critically reviewed. It is believed that the pursuit of more efficient photocatalyst needs to be considered from the adsorption‐photocatalytic mechanism, redox‐free radical mechanism, valence‐level regulation mechanism and energy transfer mechanism of photocatalysis. It is very necessary to research and develop nanoscale and quantum level mixed valence MOFs photocatalysts, which are constructed by strong electron‐donating groups. Abstract:The nanophotocatalytic technology demonstrates an environmentally friendly and sustainable route to overcome environmental and energy issues. The successful production of a nanophotocatalyst depends on four key elements such as light absorption ability, density of active sites, redox capacity, and photoinduced electron-hole recombination rate. Since most intrinsic nanosemiconductor photocatalysts cannot meet all these requirements they are often modified to boost their photocatalytic properties. Many strategies have been adopted to design novel and efficient nanophotocatalysts for diverse applications. Herein, a review is the most efficient of these strategies and methods focused on effectively overcoming the efficiency limitations of nanophotocatalysts to promote their application. Subsequently, a particular aim is put on the most current studies for photocatalytic applications such as pollutant degradation. Finally, it highlights the current advances in photocatalytic principles and mechanisms for environmental pollutants degradation, synthesis, and various methods of nanomaterials, photocatalytic degradation of environmental pollutants by nanophotocatalytic materials, and different enhancement strategies for semiconductor photocatalysis that increase the elimination efficiency of semiconductor nanophotocatalysts. Therefore, it is foreseen that this review will work as a guide for future research and provide a variety of strategies to develop novel and high-performance nanophotocatalysts for various applications.

Abstract:In recent years, photocatalysis integrated with other water purification technique is emerging to decontaminate the polluted water effectively. Herein, a focus on adsorptive photocatalysis, photo-Fenton, photo–electrocatalysis, photocatalytic ozonation, sono-photocatalysis and photo–piezocatalytic techniques developed for degradation of organic water pollutants has been provided. Specifically, application of nanocomposites in the degradation of different organic pollutants (dyes, pesticides, antibiotics, phenolic compounds etc.,) via integrated photocatalysis was reviewed. The catalytic performances of different nanocomposites along with the experimental parameters such as dosage, light source, irradiation time, pollutant' concentration was summarized. Photocatalysis integrated with multiple techniques was also introduced. Current challenges, future perspectives and conclusion of this literature survey have been briefed. Researchers who are working in photocatalytic water treatment might be benefited by this review.

Abstract:Population study was carried out on the Japanese from Toyama district using the AmpliType PM PCR amplification and typing kit (Perkin Elmer) system, and then application of the kit system to forensic materials was evaluated. Using the kit system, 2 alleles could be identified for every locus of low density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR), glycophorin A (GYPA), hemoglobin G gammaglobin (HBGG), D7S8, and 3 alleles for group specific component (GC) in a sample size of 100 unrelated individuals. Allele frequency distributions of the sample were 0.18 for A, 0.82 for B in LDLR; 0.61 for A, 0.39 for B in GYPA; 0.27 for A, 0.73 for B, 0 for C in HBGG; 0.61 for A, 0.39 for B in D7S8 and 0.31 for A, 0.48 for B, 0.21 for C in GC. Deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium could not be observed in LDLR, GYPA, D7S8 and GC loci, except in HBGG locus (p < 0.05). All genotypes of the 5 loci could be detected from every saliva stains from 12 donors, but the genotypes estimated from 3 saliva samples unexpectedly did not correspond to those on the blood from same donors. Identification of the genotype from a hair root in telophase was available only in 3 individual samples out of 12 donors. The present experiment show that further improvement should be made on the application of the kit system to saliva stain.

Abstract:China is a significant global producer and consumer of pesticides and antibiotics, with their excessive use leading to substantial water pollution that poses challenges for subsequent treatment. Photocatalytic degradation, leveraging renewable solar energy, presents an effective approach for decomposing organic pollutants and reducing residual contaminant levels in water bodies. This approach represents one effective way for addressing environmental challenges. This paper classifies representative photocatalytic materials by structural design and degradation principles including MOFs (Metal–Organic Frameworks), metal- and nonmetal-doped, mesoporous material-loaded, carbon quantum dot-modified, floatation-based, and heterojunction photocatalysts. We also discuss research on degradation pathways and reaction mechanisms for antibiotics. Of particular importance are several key factors influencing degradation efficiency, which are summarized within this work. These include the separation and charge transfer rate of catalyst surface carriers, and the wide-spectrum response capabilities of photocatalysts, as well as persulfate activation efficiency. Furthermore, emphasis is placed on the significant role played by intrinsic driving forces such as built-in electric fields within catalytic systems. Moreover, this paper introduces several promising composite-structure photocatalytic technologies from both composite-structure perspectives (e.g., Aerogel-based composites) and composite-method perspectives (e.g., the molecularly imprinted synthesis method). We also discuss their latest development status, along with future prospects, presenting valuable insights for pollutant degradation targets. This work aims to facilitate the design of efficient photocatalytic materials, while providing valuable theoretical references for environmental governance technologies.

Abstract:Self-organized, well-defined porphyrin-based nanostructures with controllable sizes and morphologies are in high demand for the photodegradation of hazardous contaminants under sunlight. From this perspective, this review summarizes the development progress in the fabrication of porphyrin-based nanostructures by changing their synthetic strategies and designs. Porphyrin-based nanostructures can be fabricated using several methods, including ionic self-assembly, metal–ligand coordination, reprecipitation, and surfactant-assisted methods. The synthetic utility of porphyrins permits the organization of porphyrin building blocks into nanostructures, which can remarkably improve their light-harvesting properties and photostability. The tunable functionalization and distinctive structures of porphyrin nanomaterials trigger the junction of the charge-transfer mechanism and facilitate the photodegradation of pollutant dyes. Finally, porphyrin nanomaterials or porphyrin/metal nanohybrids are explored to amplify their photocatalytic efficiency.

Abstract:Along with industrialization and rapid urbanization, environmental remediation is globally a perpetual concept to deliver a sustainable environment. Various organic and inorganic wastes from industries and domestic homes are released into water systems. These wastes carry contaminants with detrimental effects on the environment. Consequently, there is an urgent need for an appropriate wastewater treatment technology for the effective decontamination of our water systems. One promising approach is employing nanoparticles of metal oxides as photocatalysts for the degradation of these water pollutants. Transition metal oxides and their composites exhibit excellent photocatalytic activities and along show favorable characteristics like non-toxicity and stability that also make them useful in a wide range of applications. This study discusses some characteristics of metal oxides and briefly outlined their various applications. It focuses on the metal oxides TiO2, ZnO, WO3, CuO, and Cu2O, which are the most common and recognized to be cost-effective, stable, efficient, and most of all, environmentally friendly for a sustainable approach for environmental remediation. Meanwhile, this study highlights the photocatalytic activities of these metal oxides, recent developments, challenges, and modifications made on these metal oxides to overcome their limitations and maximize their performance in the photodegradation of pollutants.

Abstract:The environmental pollution is still one of the most serious problems facing mankind today, it is of great significance to develop novel wastewater treatment processes. Photocatalysis is regarded as one of the most promising techniques for wastewater treatment. Lately, there is a strong increase in the number of reports on the synthesis and applications of MOF-based photocatalysts. In this review, the typical modification strategies of MOFs for improving photocatalytic activities are summarized, such as optimization of preparation method, surface modification, doping metal ions, loading quantum dots as well as constructing the heterojunction. The main purposes of these modification strategies are to broaden the light absorption range of MOFs and increase the separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Advantages and disadvantages of each modification strategy are also analyzed. Meanwhile, the applications of MOFs-based photocatalyst in wastewater treatment are briefly discussed, including reduction of metal ions, degradation of organic pollutants and inactivation of bacteria. More importantly, the challenges and outlooks about MOFs-based photocatalyst are proposed. In short, it is hoped that this review can provide some meaningful references for designing MOFs-based photocatalyst in future research.
Near-infrared responsive photocatalysts for environmental remediation and energy conversion: A review

Abstract:Photocatalytic technology provides a vital pathway for the sustainable and efficient removal of environmental pollutants and energy conversion. However, enhancing the near-infrared (NIR) light absorption and utilization capabilities of photocatalysts has remained a significant challenge in this field. This paper presents a comprehensive review of recent developments in NIR-responsive photocatalysts. It systematically outlines strategies for improving the NIR light absorption capacity of photocatalysts, including doping engineering, upconversion, and plasmonic resonance effects. The discussion then progresses to cover advancements in NIR-responsive photocatalytic materials, highlighting the relationship between their unique physicochemical properties and corresponding modification strategies. Furthermore, the review explores the applications and mechanisms of various NIR-responsive photocatalysts in pollutant degradation, CO2 reduction, volatile organic compounds removal, and the green synthesis of H2 and H2O2. Finally, the paper addresses the challenges faced in developing NIR-responsive photocatalysts and their broader applications, proposing future research directions to mitigate these existing barriers.

Abstract:<p>The excessive use of antimicrobial agents such as antibiotics and disinfectants for domestic purposes and industries polluted the water bodies severely in the recent past. Thus released antimicrobial agents negatively impact the environment and human health as it induce antimicrobial resistance (AMR) to microbes in the environment. Conventional biodegradation routes showed feasible antibiotics pollutants degradation. Nonetheless, they often demand a long time of operation (usually in days) and a major portion of the antimicrobial agents is left untreated unlike the complete oxidation with advanced oxidation processes. The residues of antibiotics left in the water bodies accelerate growth of microorganisms (bacterial, fungal, and viral) with AMR. In virtue of avoiding the catastrophe of widespread AMR, photocatalysis assisted antibiotic pollutant treatment is recently gaining a great popularity as an advanced oxidation process and has shown to be useful for the removal of antimicrobial compounds, mainly antibiotics. Recent review reports on photocatalytic antibiotic degradation focus on summarizing materials progress and antibiotics pollutants in chronological viewpoints. However, the relationship between photocatalytic materials and antibiotics oxidation reaction pathways and the toxicity of by-products are needed to be shown with better clarity to transfer the photocatalysis technique from lab to market in a safe way. This review critically analyzes the insights of energetic semiconductor structure lacking to achieve hydroxyl and superoxide radicals mediated antibiotics degradation, recommends new materials design (Z scheme) and standardization in the experimental designs, and also informs the influencing parameters on antibiotic degradation. It further assesses the possibility of recovering value-added chemicals from the photocatalytic treatment process and highlights the importance of environmental toxicity analysis. Overall, this review will be a resourceful guide for interdisciplinary researchers working on advanced photocatalysis and pharmaceutical pollutant treatment for achieving a sustainable ecology and initiating a circular economy in chemical industries.</p>

Abstract:Photocatalysis , as a sustainable and environmentally friendly green technology , has garnered widespread recognition and application across various fields. Especially its potential in environmental disinfection has been highly valued by researchers. This study commences with foundational research on photocatalytic disinfection technology and provides a comprehensive overview of its current developmental status. It elucidates the complexity of the interface reaction mechanism between photocatalysts and microorganisms , providing valuable insights from the perspectives of materials and microorganisms. This study reviews the latest design and modification strategies (Build heterojunction , defect engineering, and heteroatom doping) for photocatalysts in environmental disinfection. Moreover, this study investigates the research focuses and links in constructing photocatalytic disinfection systems, including photochemical reactors, light sources, and material immobilization technologies. It studies the complex challenges and influencing factors generated by different environmental media during the disinfection process . Simultaneously, a comprehensive review extensively covers the research status of photocatalytic disinfection concerning bacteria, fungi, and viruses. It reveals the observable efficiency differences caused by the microstructure of microorganisms during photocatalytic reactions. Based on these influencing factors, the economy and effectiveness of photocatalytic disinfection systems are analyzed and discussed. Finally, this study summarizes the current application status of photocatalytic disinfection products. The challenges faced by the synthesis and application of future photocatalysts are proposed, and the future development in this field is discussed. The potential for research and innovation has been further emphasized, with the core on improving efficiency, reducing costs, and strengthening the practical application of photocatalysis in environmental disinfection.

Abstract:Nanostructured TiO₂-based Z-scheme heterojunctions have been widely accepted to be among the most effective photocatalysts for environmental remediation owing to their broadened light absorbance, high efficiency of photogenerated charge carrier separation, and well-preserved strong oxidation and reduction capability. In this review, we will first introduce the photogenerated charge carrier transportation mechanism of three different types of Z-scheme heterojunction systems, namely, liquid-phase Z-scheme photocatalytic system, all-solid-state indirect Z-scheme photocatalytic system, and all-solid-state direct Z-scheme photocatalytic system. Subsequently, we will describe the recent advances toward the rational design and fabrication of all-solid-state nanostructured TiO₂-based Z-scheme heterojunctions. The applications of the thus-constructed all-solid-state nanostructured TiO₂-based Z-scheme heterojunctions in the degradation of volatile organic compounds, removal of waste water organic pollutants, and upgradation of greenhouse gas CO₂ will then be presented one by one. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of all-solid-state nanostructured TiO₂-based Z-scheme heterojunction for photocatalytic environmental remediation will be briefly discussed, and the direction of future development will be prospected as well.

Abstract:Photocatalysis holds great promise as an efficient and sustainable oxidation technology for application in wastewater treatment. Rapid progress developing novel materials has propelled photocatalysis to the forefront of sustainable wastewater treatments. This review presents the latest progress on applications of photocatalytic wastewater treatment. Our focus is on strategies for improving performance. Challenges and outlooks in this promising field are also discussed. We hope this review will help researchers design low-cost and high-efficiency photocatalysts for water treatment.

Abstract:Water is necessary for the survival of life on Earth. A wide range of pollutants has contaminated water resources in the last few decades. The presence of contaminants incredibly different dyes in waste, potable, and surface water is hazardous to environmental and human health. Different types of dyes are the principal contaminants in water that need sudden attention because of their widespread domestic and industrial use. The toxic effects of these dyes and their ability to resist traditional water treatment procedures have inspired the researcher to develop an eco-friendly method that could effectively and efficiently degrade these toxic contaminants. Here, in this review, we explored the effective and economical methods of metal-based nanomaterials photocatalytic degradation for successfully removing dyes from wastewater. This study provides a tool for protecting the environment and human health. In addition, the insights into the transformation of solar energy for photocatalytic reduction of toxic metal ions and photocatalytic degradation of dyes contaminated wastewater will open a gate for water treatment research. The mechanism of photocatalytic degradation and the parameters that affect the photocatalytic activities of various photocatalysts have also been reported.

Abstract:Antibiotics are widely present in the environment due to their extensive and long-term use in modern medicine. The presence and dispersal of these compounds in the environment lead to the dissemination of antibiotic residues, thereby seriously threatening human and ecosystem health. Thus, the effective management of antibiotic residues in water and the practical applications of the management methods are long-term matters of contention among academics. Particularly, photocatalysis has attracted extensive interest as it enables the treatment of antibiotic residues in an eco-friendly manner. Considerable progress has been achieved in the implementation of photocatalytic treatment of antibiotic residues in the past few years. Therefore, this review provides a comprehensive overview of the recent developments on this important topic. This review primarily focuses on the application of photocatalysis as a promising solution for the efficient decomposition of antibiotic residues in water. Particular emphasis was laid on improvement and modification strategies, such as augmented light harvesting, improved charge separation, and strengthened interface interaction, all of which enable the design of powerful photocatalysts to enhance the photocatalytic removal of antibiotics.

Abstract:The suboptimal photocatalytic efficacy of Titanium (IV) oxide (TiO 2 ) and Zinc oxide (ZnO) has prompted an exploration into innovative materials for enhanced pollutant degradation in both water and air. This review rigorously examines novel photocatalytic materials designed to address a spectrum of pollutants, which includes, heavy metals, persistent organic compounds, pharmaceutical residues, and emerging contaminants. The investigation commences with a thorough exploration of the photocatalytic mechanism underlying these materials, unraveling the intricate processes that govern their pollutant-degrading capabilities. Subsequently, a comprehensive analysis investigates the impact of various parameters—such as catalyst morphology, light sources, and reaction conditions—on the overall photocatalytic efficiency. This scrutiny provides valuable insights into optimizing the performance of photocatalysts under diverse environmental conditions. A pivotal component of this review involves an in-depth examination of the four most promising photocatalysts emerging from this research. Their unique attributes, coupled with a nuanced understanding of their challenges, are meticulously elucidated. Furthermore, the review extends its purview to the prospects of these promising photocatalysts, offering a roadmap for continued advancements in environmental remediation technologies. This review, grounded in a profound exploration of both the theoretical and practical aspects of photocatalysis, contributes substantially to the field by providing a well-founded basis for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers. The insights gained from this comprehensive analysis aim to propel the development of efficient and sustainable photocatalytic processes, thereby paving the way for a cleaner and healthier environment.
