Abstract:It is my honor to be the Editor-in-Chief of Building Simulation,succeeding Professor Xudong Yang,the founding Editor-in-Chief.The Journal is undergoing rapid growth in many ways. To meet the increasing demand from both our readers and authors,the Journal has decided to change the publishing frequency from bi-monthly to monthly,effective Issue 1,Vol.15(2022).We will now publish approximately 120 articles annually.We will also further improve our quality control for accepting papers.Meanwhile,we are taking measures to speed up the review process to ensure timely,high-quality review and fast publication.

Abstract:Scientific publications, specifically journal papers, are facing increasing challenges in a number of ways for both authors and publishers, and one of them is the friendliness of the format requirements by different journals even under the same editorial management system of the same publisher. At our most recent editors' meeting of this journal, decision were made and agreed upon for the following three items: 1) requirements on the physical form and style of manuscript will be relaxed immediately on the presentation of Results and Discussion, so that either combined or separation of them into 2 different sections are accepted for further processing; 2) citations of references in text will not be mandatorily to any specific one, so citations using Harvard or Chicago styles will be both acceptable from now on; and 3) a new category of publication will be started for a testing on experimental stage as Fast-track results. With all these new changes, it is hoped that publication will be less time consuming for authors so that precious time can be used in research than formatting or re-formatting the style for a submission.

Abstract:Friction is a phenomenon that exists extensively in nature and industry; it has proven necessary in daily life and beneficial in energy scavenging but is also alleged to be the main cause of wear failures and energy consumption. Therefore, scientists have long worked on the origin of friction, trying in some instances to verify the possibility of achieving an absolute friction-free state, and rapid progress has been made in recent decades. In this article, we review the research on the friction mechanism and the development of a new burgeoning technique named "superlubricity", which has been demonstrated as an attractive way to achieve ultralow friction and wear with almost no energy dissipation. It is estimated that the future application of superlubricity could result in an economic benefit of trillions of US dollars annually worldwide, as well as having great energy saving potential.

Abstract:Abstract The last 25 years have seen immense changes, both in the world generally and in scientific publishing. It is now hard to imagine that our original editorial responsibilities included managing filing cabinets full of manuscripts and making frequent trips to the post office! In this first Invited Viewpoint, we have invited ourselves to highlight some of the key breakthroughs that have been made on topics that are within the scope of Tribology Letters , i.e., breakthroughs in the science of tribology. We also bring your attention to some unique, existing features of the journal, as well as new ways in which Tribology Letters will be more functional for you in the future. Finally, we share our views on publishing tribology research more generally, with the aim of encouraging publication decisions that benefit the tribology community as a whole.

Abstract:Reasonable texture intervals can effectively generate a local dynamic pressure effect and promote the tribofilm formation. A friction experiment combined with simulation analysis is employed to investigate the effect mechanism of sinusoidal texture intervals on surface friction properties. The synergistic antifriction mechanism between the hydrodynamic pressure effect of texture and the tribofilm is discussed. The results display that synergistic texture lubrication has a beneficial effect on improving tribological properties. The surface with a textured area density of 25% displays the optimal tribological properties. Moreover, friction reduction mechanism under different working conditions is discussed. Higher sliding speed is beneficial to anti-friction property by promoting dynamic pressure lubrication, while larger load mainly facilitates the formation of surface friction film to reduce friction.

Abstract:Friction is a primary failure mode in micro-nano electromechanical systems due to the high surface-to-volume ratio. Microgravity further complicates this issue in journal-bearing-like conformal contacts by promoting irregular disturbances. This paper aims to gain insights into the anti-friction design of journal-bearing-like devices through molecular dynamics simulation. A molecular dynamics model was proposed and the calculation method of the friction force was derived. In the absence of disturbance, the proposed model was compared with a non-conformal model which unfolded the bearing as a plane, and the influence of initial radial clearance and axis inclination on the friction force was investigated. The results showed that the proposed model could present more accurate friction forces than the non-conformal model. The friction force was inversely proportional to the initial clearance, and the axis inclination could reduce the friction force. Regarding disturbances as the superposition of two vibrations perpendicular to each other, in which case the trajectory of the journal was a Lissajous curve, the effects of frequency, stiffness coefficient, amplitude ratio, and frequency ratio were investigated. The results showed that the average friction force increased with the rising frequency in the range of 0.8 ~ 4.8 GHz, then decreased with the further increase of frequency. The average friction force was lowered when the stiffness coefficient increased from 100N/m to 1000N/m. For two representative frequencies, the average friction force exhibited different trends with the amplitude ratio. Except for the case of 1.25, increasing the frequency ratio could reduce the friction force. It seemed that applying a well-designed Lissajous route was a promising way to reduce friction.
