Abstract:Natural joints have excellent low-friction properties that positively inspire the frictional wear properties of artificial joints. Replacing damaged biological joints with artificial ones can restore bio-function and reduce the pain of arthritic patients. Improvements in the frictional wear properties of artificial joints will effectively increase the life of the prosthesis, especially for young arthritic patients. This paper reviews the lubrication mechanism of natural joints before systematically introducing the development of lubrication and wear simulation techniques for artificial joints, offering references and insights for further studies of artificial joints and the optimization of tribological properties of commercial artificial joint prostheses.

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">Biomedical metallic materials are commonly used in the repair and replacement of human tissues. After the materials are implanted in the human body, the implants can rub against human tissue or other implants, resulting in wear and tear of the implants. The wear and tear of implants in the human body can lead to osteolysis and inflammation, which can affect the longevity of the implant and human health. For the sake of human health and the longevity of implants, it is essential to study the frictional and wear properties of biomedical metallic materials. The present review summarizes the current research on the frictional and wear properties of biomedical metallic materials in recent years, as well as the methods and techniques to improve the frictional and wear properties of the materials. Abstract:Abstract The reach of tribology has expanded in diverse fields and tribology related research activities have seen immense growth during the last decade. This review takes stock of the recent advances in research pertaining to different aspects of tribology within the last 2 to 3 years. Different aspects of tribology that have been reviewed including lubrication, wear and surface engineering, biotribology, high temperature tribology, and computational tribology. This review attempts to highlight recent research and also presents future outlook pertaining to these aspects. It may however be noted that there are limitations of this review. One of the most important of these is that tribology being a highly multidisciplinary field, the research results are widely spread across various disciplines and there can be omissions because of this. Secondly, the topics dealt with in the field of tribology include only some of the salient topics (such as lubrication, wear, surface engineering, biotribology, high temperature tribology, and computational tribology) but there are many more aspects of tribology that have not been covered in this review. Despite these limitations it is hoped that such a review will bring the most recent salient research in focus and will be beneficial for the growing community of tribology researchers.

Abstract:Tribology has been well developed in the last 20 years since the development of nanotechnology and the increasing needs of the social progression.Several new areas have been brought out,such as nano-tribology,bio-tribology,superlubricity,surface texture.In the following 10 years,these new areas as well as other new emerging concepts,e.g.nano-tribology,green-tribology,bio-tribology,superlubricity,tribology in nanomanufacturing,superlubricity materials,tribology in extreme hard condition,surface texture related theory and technique,and tribology in new energy field,will play important roles in the tribological research works.Nano-tribology includes thin film lubrication (TFL) at nano-scale,nano-friction,nano-wear,surface adhesion,and so on.Green-tribology includes the environment-friendly lubricants,reduction of tribo-noise,anti-environmental pollution from wear contamination.Bio-tribology includes the tribology in organs of human being and the bionic tribology.Superlubricity includes different kinds of lubricants such as diamond like carbon (DLC) film,water based lubricant,some of bio-lubricants,which has an ultra-low friction coefficient down to the level of 0.001.How to push such ultra-low friction lubricants into application is still a big problem because they still have some disadvantages to be overcome.Tribology in nanomanufacturing includes the tribology in the manufacturing of nanoscale structure,the manufacturing with nano-precision,and the integration across higher dimensional scales (micro-,meso-and macroscale).In such area,different theories and techniques are needed to fit different objects.Tribology in extreme hard condition including the tribology under a heavy load,at a high/low temperature,at a very high/low speed,etc.,and surface texture related tribological theory and techniques also develop quite fast in recent years.The new advancements in recent years and the future needs in the following 10 years of these areas have been introduced.

Abstract:Friction and wear is a common phenomenon in production and life, and it is also a problem that cannot be eliminated. Friction has a positive side, but it also brings many problems, and the positive side should be used. Tribology is a subject specializing in the study of friction, wear, and lubrication. In recent years, after the joint research of scholars from all over the world, fruitful results have been achieved in the research of tribology in the fields of manufacturing, materials, and medicine. This paper firstly introduces the friction and wear problems in today's world, as well as the economic and environmental problems brought about, and shows the research status and its far-reaching influence in various fields; film technology and lubrication technology were analyzed, the working mechanism of each technology was explained, and the advantages and disadvantages of each technology were shown; the synergy brought about by the combined use of various technologies was mainly discussed, and the synergy of each technology was demonstrated by examples. The advantages of solving the tribological problems at the current stage, the combined use of two or more technologies can make up for each other to a certain extent. Finally, the full text is summarized and the prospect of multi-technology collaboration is prospected.

Abstract:There is a constant need to improve patient comfort and product performance associated with the use of medical devices. Efforts to optimise the tribological characteristics of medical devices usually involve modifying existing devices without compromising their main design features and functionality. This article constitutes a state-of-the-art review of the influence of dry friction on polymeric components used in medical devices, including those having microscale surface features. Surface tribology and contact interactions are discussed, along with alternative forms of surface texturing. Evident gaps in the literature, and areas warranting future research are highlighted; these include friction involving polymer Vs polymer surfaces, information regarding which topologies and feature spacings provide the best performing textured surfaces, and design guidelines that would assist manufacturers to minimise or maximise friction under non-lubricated conditions.

Abstract:With the development of the economy and manufacturing industry, tribology research in China has experienced a fast growth over recent decades. This review gives an outline for the research progresses achieved by Chinese scientists and engineers in various subjects, including elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) and mixed lubrication, nano-tribology, lubricants and additives, tribo-materials and coatings, tribology issues in biology and bionics, wear of materials, and tribological design that transfers research achievements to the design process of machine components. In comparison with the vastness of research activities and Chinese economy, this article is written by the present author, based on limited information and knowledge, but it may help tribologists around the world to get a better idea about what has been done by their counterparts in China, which would encourage communication and cooperation in tribology research.

Abstract:Friction, wear, and the consequent energy dissipation pose significant challenges in systems with moving components, spanning various domains, including nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS/MEMS) and bio-MEMS (microrobots), hip prostheses (biomaterials), offshore wind and hydro turbines, space vehicles, solar mirrors for photovoltaics, triboelectric generators, etc. Nature-inspired bionic surfaces offer valuable examples of effective texturing strategies, encompassing various geometric and topological approaches tailored to mitigate frictional effects and related functionalities in various scenarios. By employing biomimetic surface modifications, for example, roughness tailoring, multifunctionality of the system can be generated to efficiently reduce friction and wear, enhance load-bearing capacity, improve self-adaptiveness in different environments, improve chemical interactions, facilitate biological interactions, etc. However, the full potential of bioinspired texturing remains untapped due to the limited mechanistic understanding of functional aspects in tribological/biotribological settings. The current review extends to surface engineering and provides a comprehensive and critical assessment of bioinspired texturing that exhibits sustainable synergy between tribology and biology. The successful evolving examples from nature for surface/tribological solutions that can efficiently solve complex tribological problems in both dry and lubricated contact situations are comprehensively discussed. The review encompasses four major wear conditions: sliding, solid-particle erosion, machining or cutting, and impact (energy absorbing). Furthermore, it explores how topographies and their design parameters can provide tailored responses (multifunctionality) under specified tribological conditions. Additionally, an interdisciplinary perspective on the future potential of bioinspired materials and structures with enhanced wear resistance is presented.

Abstract:The selection of a manufacturing process (finishing) related to material properties seems to be of vital importance. On the condition that manufacturing and machining parameters are chosen correctly, they may optimize the functional properties of components, ensuring reduction of wear and longer life of a friction pair. The subjects of research were metal surfaces used in conjunction with polymer surfaces. These both materials are used in medicine. From the precision machining process, three different kinds of plate surface textures (defined by Ra parameter: Ra(A) < Ra(B) < Ra(C)) were obtained. The tribological research was performed with a tribotester in the Ringer's solution, which helped determine the following tribological characteristics of a friction pair: friction coefficient and the wear intensity of a polymeric pin. Two devices were employed to analyze surface texture: a scanning electron microscopy and a white light interference microscopy. It was noticed that there was a certain correlation between the machined surface established in the manufacturing process, tribological characteristics, and the worn surface created during a friction cycle. The lowest friction coefficient as well as the smallest value of wear intensity were obtained for friction pair: pin-on-plate A. The results should be verified during the following stage – tribological tests on a simulator.

Abstract:When two bodies are in contact, various surface/subsurface damage problems may arise, which significantly shorten the service lives of functional components. These damage problems may further interact with one another and be influenced by such factors as friction and lubrication. Contact mechanics plays an important role in understanding the complex phenomena and analyzing the damage evolution. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the recent progress in contact mechanics for tribological and contact damage-related problems. After a brief introduction of the contact mechanics, the applications of contact mechanics in various problems are systematically elaborated. Finally, the review concludes with future perspectives and major challenges to be addressed.

Abstract:In this introductory paper for the Theme Issue on green tribology, we discuss the concept of green tribology and its relation to other areas of tribology as well as other ‘green’ disciplines, namely, green engineering and green chemistry. We formulate the 12 principles of green tribology: the minimization of (i) friction and (ii) wear, (iii) the reduction or complete elimination of lubrication, including self-lubrication, (iv) natural and (v) biodegradable lubrication, (vi) using sustainable chemistry and engineering principles, (vii) biomimetic approaches, (viii) surface texturing, (ix) environmental implications of coatings, (x) real-time monitoring, (xi) design for degradation, and (xii) sustainable energy applications. We further define three areas of green tribology: (i) biomimetics for tribological applications, (ii) environment-friendly lubrication, and (iii) the tribology of renewable-energy application. The integration of these areas remains a primary challenge for this novel area of research. We also discuss the challenges of green tribology and future directions of research.

Abstract:The Special Issue on Tribology and Surface Engineering includes nine research articles and one review article. It concerns a very important problem of resistance to wear and shaping the properties of the surface layers of different materials by different methods and technologies. The topics of the presented research articles include reactive direct current magnetron sputtering of silicon nitrides on implants, laser surface modification of aeroengine turbine blades, laser micro-texturing of titanium alloy to increase the tribological characteristics, electroplating of Cu–Sn composite coatings incorporated with Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and TiO2 particles, arc spraying of self-lubricous coatings, high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) spraying and gas nitriding of stainless steel coatings, HVOF spraying composite WC-Co coatings, testing of coatings deposited by physical vapour deposition (PVD), and also analysis of material removal and surface creation in wood sanding. The special issue provides valuable knowledge based on theoretical and empirical study in the field of coating technologies, as well as characterization of coatings, and wear phenomena.

Abstract:Tribology has been significantly contributing to materials, energy conservation and engineering innovation. This paper elaborates the development of tribology considering in detail in energy factor, tribological role of efficiency in the society by introducing lubricants which reduces the effective friction while moving the mass which significantly improves overall efficiency of the process all though it was primitive. The field of tribology is crucial to lowering the levels of emissions from various industries because it is being used to cut down on the amount of unnecessary energy used by mechanisms. Understanding the functions of friction and wear between two surfaces that come into contact has been the domain of tribology for many decades. They have applied this knowledge to make mechanisms more energy efficient by only using what is necessary to power them and reducing the amount of energy lost through wear and friction.

Abstract:Abstract The last 25 years have seen immense changes, both in the world generally and in scientific publishing. It is now hard to imagine that our original editorial responsibilities included managing filing cabinets full of manuscripts and making frequent trips to the post office! In this first Invited Viewpoint, we have invited ourselves to highlight some of the key breakthroughs that have been made on topics that are within the scope of Tribology Letters , i.e., breakthroughs in the science of tribology. We also bring your attention to some unique, existing features of the journal, as well as new ways in which Tribology Letters will be more functional for you in the future. Finally, we share our views on publishing tribology research more generally, with the aim of encouraging publication decisions that benefit the tribology community as a whole.

Abstract:Surface texturing technology, as an advanced method to improve surface tribological properties of friction pairs, has been widely used in many fields. In this work, the influence of surface texture parameters on tribological properties of friction pair surfaces are reviewed. For the currently most developed surface textures with symmetry and simple geometries and distributions, it is found that they could help reduce friction mainly by enhancing their dynamic pressure lubrication capability, storing abrasive debris and lubricants for dynamic lubrication or promoting the formation of friction films on surfaces of friction pairs. The dominant design parameters of surface textures influencing their tribological performance are found to be shape, geometry and density, while working condition, including contact mode and lubrication situation, also has a significant influence on the performance of surface textures with specific features. Asymmetric textures and multi-scale composite textures also show great tribological performance, while the coupling mechanism across different factors is still unclear, which makes it a challenge to maximize the advantage of asymmetric or multi-scale composite textures. The development of machine learning provides promising approaches for the multi-parameter optimization of surface textures, which is expected to promote and accelerate the design of advanced surface textures.

Abstract:The recent development in the four areas of nano-tribology is analysed. They are micro-and nano-friction and wear, micro- and nano-tribological engineering. The research methods in nano-tribology and thin film lubrication in which five branches are included: equivalent viscusity and flowing characteristics of micro fluid, the transition between ordered molecular film and disordered one, the essence of matrix influence on thin film lubrication, the lubrication mechanism of high polymer lubricants and the problem of superlubricity. Meanwhile, more than 35 problems are proposed which should be solved in the future.

Abstract:Tribochemical wear of contact materials is an important issue in science and engineering. Understanding the mechanisms of tribochemical wear at an atomic scale is favorable to avoid device failure, improve the durability of materials, and even achieve ultra-precision manufacturing. Hence, this article reviews some of the latest developments of tribochemical wear of typical materials at micro/nano-scale that are commonly used as solid lubricants, tribo-elements, or structural materials of the micro-electromechanical devices, focusing on their universal mechanisms based on the studies from experiments and numerical simulations. Particular focus is given to the fact that the friction-induced formation of interfacial bonding plays a critical role in the wear of frictional systems at the atomic scale.
