Abstract:This review summarizes recent work in nanoscale luminescent materials of rare earth compounds. This review concentrates on the preparation, structure and luminescence properties of nanoscale rare earth compounds. Spectroscopic studies range from basic luminescence spectroscopy, luminescence intensity and decay time to concentration quench. Finally, some suggestions of further research work are preferred.

Abstract:Rare earth activated nanophosphors have attracted extensive attention because of their potential applications in lighting,display and fluorescence bio-label,and also of their elementary importance on understanding of the 4fN electronic transition properties of rare earth ions in nanosized particles.In the latest ten years,a great number of improvements have been achieved in this field.In this review article,we mainly present some important research results on photoluminescence properties of rare earth doped oxide nanophosphors.The contents concern exciton and charge transfer transitions,symmetry sites and local environments surrounding rare earth ions,radiative transition and nonradiative relaxation processses on 4fN states,temprature-quenching and concentration-quenching of luminescence,energy transfer among rare earths,electron-phonon coupling,ultravoilet irradiation induced spectral change and etc.Besides,the luminescence properties of rare earth actived one-dimensional oxide nanowires(tubes,rods)and upconversion nanophosphors were introduced independently.It is expected that more universal conclusions relative to nanoparticle size and structure on the photoluminescence of rare earth actived nanoparticles can be drawn,however,it should be noted that some results introduced here might be still controversal,because some photoluminescence properties depend strongly on the preparation technique and detailed conditions.

Abstract:Luminescent lanthanide complexes have been widely investigated as light emitting materials in bio-imaging and sensing, solid state lighting and display, anti-fake tags and light conversion films, due to their characterized photophysical properties including large Stokes shift, long lifetime, and sharp emission spectrum, arising from the sensitized f - f transitions. In this review, we summarize the most recent advances in luminescent lanthanide complexes and their applications from 2015 to August 2017 concerning of general concepts to potential applications. We first introduce the basic concept of sensitized luminescence of lanthanide complexes and the strategies used for highly luminescent complexes. Then recent varieties of luminescent lanthanide complexes and their hybrid materials are presented. Finally, applications are discussed in detail.

Abstract:One-dimensional nanosized phosphors demonstrate special structural and photoluminescence properties, which have application potential in some optical fields. In this article, we present our recent progress on preparation and luminescence properties of some one-dimensional rare earth compounds and complexes, the core-shell oxide nanowires prepared by a two-step hydrothermal route, the nanowires of some inorganic compounds doped with rare earths and rare earth complexes/PVP composites prepared by the electrospinning method, and the rare earth complexes in the SBA-15 mesoporous molecule sieves. In these systems, some novel or improved photoluminescence properties are observed such as improved luminescence quantum yield, thermal stability and/or photostability, and depressed thermal effect in upconversion luminescence.

Abstract:Hydrothermal synthesis process and luminescence properties of rare earth doped double tungstates NaRe(WO_4)_2 nanocrystals have been investigated.The hydrothermal synthesis temperatures changed with different Re~(3+) ions.The rare earth ions were found to be located at anti-inversion symmetry in the NaRe(WO_4)_2 crystals.The strong green upconversion luminescence of Er~(3+) and Yb~(3+) co-doped NaRe(WO_4)_2 nanocrystals under 980 nm excitation could be observed,mechanism of luminescence was also discussed.

Abstract:Rare earth (RE) elements are widely used in the luminescence and magnetic fields by virtue of their abundant 4f electron configurations. However, the overall performance and aqueous stability of single-component RE materials need to be urgently improved to satisfy the requirements for multifunctional applications. Carbon nanodots (CNDs) are excellent nanocarriers with abundant functional surface groups, excellent hydrophilicity, unique photoluminescence (PL) and tunable features. Accordingly, RE-CND hybrids combine the merits of both RE and CNDs, which dramatically enhance their overall properties such as luminescent and magnetic-optical imaging performances, leading to highly promising practical applications in the future. Nevertheless, a comprehensive review focusing on the introduction and in-depth understanding of RE-CND hybrid materials has not been reported to date. This review endeavors to summarize the recent advances of RE-CNDs, including their interaction mechanisms, general synthetic strategies and applications in fluorescence, biosensing and multi-modal biomedical imaging. Finally, we present the current challenges and the possible application perspectives of newly developed RE-CND materials. We hope this review will inspire new design ideas and valuable references in this promising field in the future.

Abstract:2D rare earth (RE) materials have received considerable attention in recent years due to the fascinating luminescence, magnetism, and electric properties originated from RE associated with sharp and various emission peaks, intrinsic 2D ferromagnetism, and incommensurate charge density wave. These materials might open up a new prospect in next‐generation lighting, magnetic devices, and phototransistors. Herein, a comprehensive review of 2D RE materials is presented, focusing on their recent progresses. First, the crystal structures of 2D RE materials are discussed. Then, typical synthesis methods such as mechanical exfoliation, molecular beam epitaxy, pulsed laser deposition, and chemical vapor deposition are introduced. Furthermore, various properties in luminescence, magnetism, and electronics are summarized. The recently reported RE‐based 2D novel photodetectors are outlined as three constructions: MoS2/RE, graphene/RE, and perovskite/RE, which show promising applications for both narrow and broad band detection arised from the special absorption windows of different RE elements. Finally, the conclusions and outlook of this area are proposed, such as exploring novel 2D RE compounds, improving stability, and broadening applications.

Abstract:This review is focused upon unique optical properties of rare earth (RE) doped ZnO nanostructures derived by a cost-effective sol-gel method. Doping of RE elements improves the properties of ZnO due to their special electronic structure, small crystal field splitting and partially filled 4f energy level, surrounded by full 5s and 5p orbitals. RE-element-induced defects regulate energy transfer dynamics, which can add superior features in ZnO. The biocompatibility of ZnO along with its special calibre of sustained tuneable features by RE doping makes it an excellent candidate for a highly demanding field, i.e. bio-imaging. Here, five RE elements, Tb, Ce, Gd, Y and Eu, are chosen to comprehensively review alterations in the optical parameters of ZnO by their doping. Band gap tuning and luminous properties of RE doped ZnO nanostructures, as well as their features and applications in diverse sectors, are majorly highlighted.

Synthesis, Characterization and Fluorescence of Rare Earth Nitrate Complexes with Triaza-Crown Ether Derivative

Abstract:Four new complexes of rare earths with a triaza-crown ether (L) derived from N3O2-macro cycle 1,12,15-triaza-3, 4: 9,10-dibenzo-5, 8-dioxacycloheptadecane were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, molar conductance, TG-DTA analysis and fluorescence spectra. The composition of the complexes determined as [RE(NO3)3L*3H2O]*H2O (RE=Sm, Eu, Tb and Dy). It is found that Sm3+, Eu3+, Tb3+ and Dy3+ complexes all show strong fluorescence emission in the solid state. Among these complexes, Tb3+ complex has the strongest luminescence intensity. It shows that the ligand L triplet state energy matches 5D4 energy level of Tb3+. In the Eu3+ complex, η(5D0→7F2/5D0→7F1) is 2.6, which indicates that Eu3+ locates at the asymmetric coordination field.

Queisser, 1981 This article briefly summarizes recent progress on the luminescence studies of monomeric, multinuclear, and polymeric Zn(ii)/Cd(ii) coordination complexes, involving spectroscopic, photophysical, and photochemical studies, as well as molecular and electronic structural investigations, focussing mainly on the interplaying factors that govern the luminescent origin of the lowest-lying emissive states. Current results show that, for Zn(ii)/Cd(ii) coordination complexes in general, the nature of the metal centres and ligands and the rigid metal-oxy (or -hydroxy) clusters are factors governing their luminescent origin of the lowest-lying emissive states; different types of ligands and coordination structures may result in different emission mechanisms.

Abstract:Owing to their unique photo-physical properties, rare-earth ions-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) have attracted extensive attention in recent years. UCNPs have many special merits, such as a long luminescence lifetime, narrow emission band widths, high quantum yields and low toxicity, which allows their potential applications in bio-medical field, biological luminescent labels and drug delivery carriers. Compared with traditional fluorescence labels exited by UV (ultraviolet), such as organic dyes and quantum dots, UCNPs can transfer near-infrared (NIR) light into visible light, which is commonly called upconversion luminescence (UCL). This paper reviews the recent advances of several typical synthesis methods of UCNPs in detail as well as the fabrication and optimization of the particle morphology, and the latest advances of UCNPs for multimode imaging, surface passivation and functionalization are also described.

Abstract:Lanthanide-doped luminescent inorganic materials are widely used for solid-state lasers, optical communications, flat displays, bioprobes, and nanophotonics. Lanthanide ions (from Ce to Yb) are excellent structural and spectroscopic probes, and their optical properties in diverse host materials are critically dependent on their localized electronic structures and excited-state dynamics. Comprehensive survey on the optics and optoelectronics of lanthanide-activated materials is fundamentally important for discovering novelty optics and exploring their new applications. By utilizing our self-made low-temperature and high-resolution laser spectroscopic measurement system as well as the absolute upconversion quantum yield measurement system, we have systematically investigated the electronic structures and optical properties of lanthanide-doped luminescent inorganic materials, and have achieved many important advances on their controlled synthesis, electronic structure, optical properties, and bioapplications in recent years. These findings may open up a new avenue for lanthanide-doped luminescent inorganic materials in biological applications and the high-value exploitation of rare earths.

Abstract:This review article explores and analyzes published data on the photoluminescence and electroluminescence characteristics of rare earth element (REE) complex compounds, which are promising materials for creating highly efficient OLED devices. Distinguishing features of such compounds include their narrow emission bands, Stokes shift, long lifetime, and high quantum yields, enabling high resolution and color purity in constructed OLED devices. Using REE complexes as emissive layers in light-emitting diodes ensures significant color saturation and high device efficiency.

Abstract:As a special kind of luminescent material, rare earth complexes have attracted great interest throughout the world owing to their peculiarities of their luminescent properties and potential application in full-color flat panel displays. In this article, we clarified the design and synthesis of novel rare earth europium and terbium complexes in recent years, and the optimization of electroluminescent devices based on rare earth europium and terbium complexes. Several helpful methods in enhancing electroluminescence properties of rare earth complexes were summarized. The new applications of europium, terbium and gadolinium complexes as sensitizer in organic electroluminescent devices were also emphatically introduced. The results showed that the application of rare earth complexes as sensitizer can realize the complementary advantages of rare earth complexes and transition metal complexes, thus improving the performances of organic electroluminescent devices. These provide a new way for design and optimization of new high-performance organic electroluminescent devices.

Abstract:Rare earth-β-diketone complexes is a class of huge potential function compounds due to their unique light-emitting mechanism and excellent luminescent properties.The rare earth complexes,which is used β-diketones as ligand,has better luminescent properties under ultraviolet light excitation.Moreover,these complexes have a certain value for developing new rare earth complexes luminescence materials as a result of their good monochromaticity and narrow fluorescent half peak width.The research progress about the luminescent properties of novel ligands synthesized by the introducing of the various second ligand is summarized in detail.In addition,this paper also focus on issues about the luminescent properties of rare earth-β-diketone complexes.Finally, the developing trend for rare earth-β-diketone complexes is proposed in future research work.
