Abstract:‘Luminescence research has a long history full of splendor and surprise, and a bright future, promising variegated applications to probe molecules and crystals, to visualize atomic phenomena, …’ H. Queisser, 1981 This article briefly summarizes recent progress on the luminescence studies of monomeric, multinuclear, and polymeric Zn(ii)/Cd(ii) coordination complexes, involving spectroscopic, photophysical, and photochemical studies, as well as molecular and electronic structural investigations, focussing mainly on the interplaying factors that govern the luminescent origin of the lowest-lying emissive states. Current results show that, for Zn(ii)/Cd(ii) coordination complexes in general, the nature of the metal centres and ligands and the rigid metal-oxy (or -hydroxy) clusters are factors governing their luminescent origin of the lowest-lying emissive states; different types of ligands and coordination structures may result in different emission mechanisms.

Abstract:We design two novel d(10) metal complexes [Zn(3-qlc)(2)](n) (Zn1), [Cd(3-qlc)(2)](n) (Cd1) (3-Hqlc = quinoline-3-carboxylic acid), which display similar 2D layer structures, and further form 3D 6-connected primitive cubic (pcu) network topology via pi center dot center dot center dot pi stacking interactions with the point symbol {4(12).6(3)}. Complexes Zn1 and Cd1 exhibit tunable luminescence and photovoltaic properties as a new type of multifunctional materials. Zn1 and Cd1 show tunable luminescence from blue to green by varying the temperature in the solid state. What's more, both of them exhibit excellent aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties in DMSO/water mixtures. Encouraged by the UV-visible absorption in an ethanol solution result, Zn1 and Cd1 can be considered as co-sensitizers in combination with N719 to investigate their effect on enhancing the dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) performance. Zn1 and Cd1 could overcome the deficiency in the ruthenium complex N719 absorption in the ultraviolet and blue-violet region, offsetting competitive visible light absorption of I-3(-) and reducing the charge recombination of injected electrons. After being co-sensitized with Zn1 and Cd1, the devices co-sensitized by Zn1/N719 and Cd1/N719 yield an overall efficiency of 7.75% and 7.70%, which are 44.59% and 43.66% higher than that of the device sensitized only by N719 (5.36%).

Abstract:Six 5-coordinate 2,6-bis(imino)pyridine metal complexes, [2,6-(ArN=CMe)2C5H3NMCl2 center dot nCH3CN] (Ar = 4-MeC6H4, M = Zn, n = 0.5, Zn1, M = Cd, n = 1, Cd1; Ar = 2,6-Et2C6H3, M = Zn, n = 0.5, Zn2, M = Cd, n = 0.5, Cd2; Ar = 2,4,6-Me3C6H2, M = Zn, n = 1, Zn3, M = Cd, n = 1, Cd3), were synthesized in acetonitrile by the reactions of the corresponding bis(imino)pyridines with ZnCl2 or CdCl2 center dot 2.5H2O, respectively. The structures of Zn1-Zn3 and Cd1-Cd3 were determined by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In all complexes, the ligand is tridentate with further coordination by two chlorides, resulting in a distorted trigonal bipyramid. All complexes self-assemble through hydrogen bonding interactions to form a 3-D supramolecular structure. At 298 K in dichloromethane, all complexes have blue luminescent emissions at 405-465 nm, which can be attributed to ligand-centered * transitions. The zinc and cadmium centers play a key role in enhancing fluorescent emission of the ligands.

Abstract:Nine IIB group complexes, [ZnL1Cl2] (Zn1), [CdL1Cl2] 2 (Cd1), [HgL1Cl2] (Hg1), [ZnL2Cl2] (Zn2), [CdL2Cl2] (Cd2), [HgL2Cl2] (Hg2), [ZnL3Cl2] (Zn3), [CdL3Cl2] (Cd3) and [HgL3Cl2] (Hg3), have been synthesized from the corresponding ortho-(6-methoxy-pyridyl)(CH=NAr) (where Ar = 2,6-iPr(2)C(6)H(3), L-1; 4-MeC6H4, L-2; 2-OMeC6H4, L-3) Schiff base and structurally characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, H-1 NMR and X-ray single-crystal analysis. Crystallographic studies reveal that the center metal of the complexes adopts a distorted tetrahedron geometry (except for Cd1 and Cd3, which display square pyramidal geometry) and C-H center dot center dot center dot Cl hydrogen bonds and pi center dot center dot center dot pi stacking interactions contribute to three-dimensional supramolecular structures. The series of complexes exhibit tunable luminescence from blue, through green, to light yellow by varying the temperature (298 K and 77 K), both in solution and in the solid state. Moreover, the quantum yields range from 0.027 to 0.422, and decrease according to the order of the periodic table (Zn > Cd > Hg). These results indicate that the center atom of the complexes leads to the geometry differences and hence to the tunable luminescence properties. Because Zn1-Zn3 exhibited higher molar extinction coefficients and a distinct absorption region, they were employed as co-sensitizers in ruthenium dye N719-sensitized photoanodes to deliver light-electricity efficiency enhancement, being assembled with counter-electrodes and electrolyte to prepare ZnX/N719 (where ZnX = Zn1, Zn2 and Zn3) co-sensitized dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC) devices. The prepared co-absorbent could overcome the deficiency of N719 absorption in the low-wavelength region of the visible spectrum, and offset competitive visible-light absorption of I-3(-). Application of these prepared complexes in N719-sensitized solar cells enhanced their performance by 10-36%, which indicated a potential application of these types of complexes in DSSCs.

Abstract:The hydrothermal reactions of Zn(ClO4)(2).6H(2)O and Cd(ClO4)(2).6H(2)O with 1,3-bis(2H-tetrazol-5-yl)benzene in an aqueous ethanol and an aqueous methanol/pyridine medium, respectively, yielded a 3D and a 2D metal-organic coordination framework [Zn(1,3-BTB)] (1) and [Cd(1,3-BTB)(2)(Py)(2)(H2O)(2)] [Cd[Cd(Py)(H2O)](2)(1,3-BTB)(2)] (2) (t,3-BTB = 1,3-ditetrazolylbenzene, Py = pyridine), respectively. Species I possesses an open network structure with no guest terisation of 2 shows a 2D layered framework consisting of nano-sized polytube structures which are stacked one on top of another in the (110) plane giving small channels along the b and c axes. Abstract:A series of novel zinc complexes containing 4-2',2"-dipyridylamino-1,8-naphthalimide have been synthesized by a concise route. The luminescent properties of these materials have been investigated. Complexes Zn (N-pentyl-4-2',2"-dipyridylamino-1,8-naphthalimide)Cl-2 and compound 6 Zn(SMDP)Cl-2 show strong fluorescence in solution. In solid state the coordination of 1 and 5 ligands to a zinc center cause a blue shift of emission wavelength. They have absorption bands in the UV or near-UV region, and have the potential function as fluorescent sensors.

Abstract:Two novel coordination polymers, {[Cd(TZMB)(1,4-bib)0.5]·(H2O)1.5} (1) and {[Zn(TZMB)(1,4-bib)0.5]}n (2), have been synthesized under solvothermal conditions. Complex 1 displays a 3D structure with the (47.84)(4.72.83) topology and Complex 2 is a 3D structure with the point symbol of {4.82}{4.85}. And complex 1 shows good luminescent quenching effect for organic solvent molecules (actone and p-nitrophenol) and Fe3+.

Abstract:Mechanochromic luminescent metal complexes have recently attracted considerable interest as smart materials for use in the fields of luminescence switches, mechanosensors, mechanohistory indicators, security papers, optoelectronic devices, and data storage. In this review, recent advancements in metal complex mechanochromic luminescence are summarized. The majority of the reported mechanochromic luminescent metal complex systems are discussed, including Zn(II), Au(I), Pt(II), Ag(I), Cu(I), Al(III), and Ir(III) complexes. Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) complexes are described based on the existence of a structural relationship between AIE compounds and mechanochromism. It is expected that AIE complexes may become important alternative sources of mechanochromic luminescent complexes.

Abstract:This study is committed to the synthesis and characterization of a series of bi‐, tri‐ and tetranuclear coordination compounds. These compounds are produced through the reactions of zinc(II) or cadmium(II) ions as coordination centers with flexible bis(quinolyl) ligands HL1 (N,N'‐bis‐quinolin‐2‐ylmethylene‐carbohydrazide) or HL2 (N,N'‐bis‐quinolin‐2‐ylmethylenecarbonothioic dihydrazide), in conjunction with chloride, thiocyanate, iodide or hydroxyl anions serving as the coordinated counterions. These compounds are denoted as [Zn 3 (L1) 2 Cl(NCS) 3 ]∙2DMF∙H 2 O ( 1 ), [Zn 4 (L1) 2 Cl 3.8 I 0.2 (OH) 2 ]∙8H 2 O ( 2 ), [Cd 2 (L1)I 3 (H 2 O)(DMF)]∙DMF∙0.25H 2 O ( 3 ), [Zn 3 (L2) 2 Cl 4 ]∙3DMF∙2H 2 O ( 4 ), [Zn 3 (L2) 2 Cl(NCS) 3 ]∙3DMF ( 5 ), [Zn 4 (L2) 2 Cl 4 (OH) 2 ]∙3DMF∙2H 2 O ( 6 ), and [Cd 4 (L2) 2 I 6 ]∙2DMF ( 7 ). An array of analytical techniques including elemental analyses, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, powder X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and comprehensive single crystal structure analyses have been utilized to elucidate the nature of these compounds. The crystal structures of compounds 1 to 7 exhibit complex supramolecular networks, arranged in zero, one, two, or three dimensions, primarily mediated by various interactions such as intermolecular π∙∙∙π, C―H∙∙∙π, C―H∙∙∙Cl, C―H∙∙∙S weak interactions, in addition to hydrogen bonding. The structural diversity highlights the key roles of the variable coordinating counterions and the coordination modes of the iodide anions in shaping the architectures of the coordination compounds. Furthermore, the luminescent characteristics of compounds 1 to 7 have been assessed in the solid state.

Abstract:A novel series of Zn/Cd coordination polymers based on H3L, namely, [Zn2(HL)2(bipy)2(H2O)6]n (1), [Zn(HL)(phen)]n (2), [Cd3L2(bbi)3]n (3), [Zn3L2(bbi)3]n (4) [(H3L =4-[(1-carboxynaphthalen-2-yl)oxy]phthalic acid, bipy =4,4′-bipyridine, phen =1,10-phenanthroline, bbi =1,1′-(1,4-butanediyl)bis(imidazole] have been successfully synthesized by solvothermal reaction. Compound 1 possesses two diverse 1D chains constructed by different bipy coligands, which were further connected to form a 3D supramolecular architecture by hydrogen bonding interactions. Compound 2 possesses a complicated 1D chain based on secondary building unit (SBU) with binuclear Zn cluster. Compounds 3 and 4 exhibit similar 2D→3D framework, which can be rationalized as (3,4,4)-connected 3D net with a Schläfli symbol of (63.8.102)2(63)2(64.8.10). In particular, compound 3 exhibited a high sensitivity for Cr3+ in aqueous solutions, which suggest that compound 3 is a promising luminescent probe for selectively sensing Cr3+.
