Abstract:The development of effective and practical adsorbents for eliminating pollutants still remains a significant challenge. Herein, we synthesized a novel magnetically separable composite, Co 0.6 Fe 2.4 O 4 /MIL-101-NH 2 , through the in-situ growth of MIL-101-NH 2 on magnetic nanoparticles, designed specifically for the removal of Congo red (CR) from aqueous solutions. MIL-101-NH 2 possessed high BET surface area (240.485 m 2 •g −1 ) and facile magnetic separation function and can be swiftly separated (within 30 s) through an external magnetic field post-adsorption. The investigation systematically explored the influence of crucial parameters, including adsorbent dosage, pH, adsorption duration, temperature, and the presence of interfering ions, on CR adsorption performance. Findings indicate that CR adsorption adheres to the pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model. Thermodynamic analysis reveals the spontaneity, endothermic nature, and orderly progression of the adsorption process. Remarkably, the adsorbent with 0.1 g•L −1 boasts an impressive maximum adsorption capacity of 1756.19 mg•g −1 for CR at 298.15 K, establishing its competitive advantage. The reuse of the adsorbent over 5 cycles remains 78% of the initial adsorption. The CR adsorption mechanisms were elucidated, emphasizing the roles of π-π interactions, electrostatic forces, hydrogen bonding, and metal coordination. Comparison with other dyes, such as methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO), and exploration of adsorption performance in binary dye systems, demonstrates the superior capacity and selectivity of this adsorbent for CR. In conclusion, our magnetically separable metal–organic framework (MOF)based composite presents a versatile and effective solution for CR removal, with promising applications in water treatment and environmental remediation.

Abstract:Developing a green adsorbent to deal with Congo red dyes from wastewater was a significative exploration. In the work, we prepared an ionic liquid modified magnetic cellulose/sepiolite composite FSCS-cl-p(MBA-co-BVI) via a simple method, the process including the magnetic sepiolite/cellulose complex grafting the polymer of MBA and BVI. The high specific surface area of sepiolite and cellulose, the electropositivity of ionic liquids [Bvim][Br] and magnetic response of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 nanoparticles jointly promoted the adsorption performance of adsorbents. The composites were characterized by SEM, XRD, EDS, FTIR, BET, TGA and VSM, the adsorption performances were evaluated containing the influence factors, adsorption kinetics, isotherm and thermodynamics. In brief, the adsorbents were suitable within the pH range of 3–9 and reach adsorption equilibrium during 120 min. Meanwhile, the maximum adsorption capacity for CR was up to 1374.10 mg/g at 45 °C. Furthermore, the adsorption kinetics and isotherm models were well-fitted to pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm model, respectively. The adsorption mechanisms of FSCS-cl-p(MBA-co-BVI) for CR could be interpreted as electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking interaction. Based on results, the as-obtained adsorbents were effective, inexpensive and expected to be applied to the treatment of dyestuff.

Abstract:Shell powder (SP) with chitosan (CS) immobilized was applied as a composite biosorbent (CS-SP) for adsorptive removal of Congo red from aqueous solution. The materials were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. Dye adsorption onto SP and CS-SP was investigated under varied conditions such as chitosan content, initial dye concentration, pH, salt concentration, and temperature. The optimum CS content was determined as 15 wt%, under which CS-SP displayed a fine coating structure and a greater adsorption capacity of 258.53 mg/g compared with 36.50 mg/g for SP at 30 degrees C. The composite adsorbent maintained its performance in high-salinity, acidic or alkaline environment, and exhibited excellent reusability throughout five-recycle regeneration. The dynamic data conformed to pseudo-second-order and Elovich models while the equilibrium isotherms followed Langmuir and Temkin models, which revealed that chemisorption was involved in the adsorption mechanism. Besides, the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity for CS-SP reached 263.85, 283.29, 322.58 mg/g at 30 degrees C, 40 degrees C, and 50 degrees C, respectively, and adsorption on CS-SP was verified to be endothermic and spontaneous from thermodynamic study. The results indicated that the prepared CS-SP biosorbent is quite promising for dye wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Herein, high-activityand petal-like Zn-Al layered double hydroxide/multiwalled carbon nanotubes supported sodium dodecyl sulfonate (Zn-Al LDH/SDS/MWCNTs) composites were successfully synthesized as novel, eco-friendly and effective adsorbents. The particularly physical and chemical properties of Zn-Al LDH/SDS/MWCNTs composites were characterized in detail. Besides, the adsorption performance and interaction mechanism of Congo red onto Zn-Al LDH/SDS/MWCNTs were also investigated under various experiment conditions. The initial pH values and adsorbent concentration played significant part in adsorption performance of Congo red dye. The adsorption kinetics and temperature-dependent isotherms of Congo red onto Zn-Al LDH/SDS/MWCNTs were respectively consistent with pseudo second-order model and Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacity of Congo red was greatly achieved to 1.42 × 10−3 mol/g adopting Langmuir model, which was much better than those previously reported other composites to date. The experimental results illustrated that the adsorption performance of Congo red onto Zn-Al LDH/SDS/MWCNTs composites was primarily contributed to surface complexation, ion change, π-π interaction, electrostatic interaction together with hydrogen bond to some extent. The experimental results demonstrated that the as-synthesized Zn-Al LDH/SDS/MWCNTs composites are remarkable adsorbents for the wastewater treatment systems. Our study initials a new foresight for understanding the interaction mechanism and preparing highly efficient and eco-friendly adsorbents with excellent adsorption performance for the elimination of organic contaminants.

Abstract:A tetraethylenepentamine modified magnetic cellulose nanocrystal composites (Fe3O4@CNC-TEPA) was prepared by the coprecipitation method and Schiff base reaction, which could adsorb Congo red (CR) efficiently. The morphology and structure of the nanoparticles were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), zeta potential (ZETA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). Subsequently, the Fe3O4@CNC-TEPA adsorbed CR was investigated by comparative experiments, selective adsorption experiments, effect of pH, effect of adsorbent dosage, adsorption isotherms, thermodynamics parameters, adsorption kinetics, leaching experiments, desorption and reusability experiments. Results revealed the fact that the nanoparticles showed excellent adsorption capacity of CR (1049 mg g−1) due to the abundant hydroxyl and amino groups on the surface of the Fe3O4@CNC-TEPA. The adsorption process was best described by the the Langmuir equation and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Moreover, the Fe3O4@CNC-TEPA loaded with CR can be recycled with NaOH solution easily, which can be used repeatedly for CR adsorption. After six cycles, the adsorption capacity was still about 81.5% of the original particles'. Abstract:Nowadays, great efforts have been devoted to combining pure MOFs with functional components, one of which is the preparation of magnetic MOFs. Many cases of preparing magnetic MOFs have been reported, however, the existing strategies are complicated and have poor practicality. Herein, a facile one-step method was developed to endow ZIF-8 with superparamagnetism, where the organic ligand 2-methylimidazole was also used as alkaline source for formation of Fe3O4 via coprecipitation in the mixed system containing Zn2+, Fe2+ and Fe3+. The reactions that occurred in succession are formation of Fe3O4 and nucleation of ZIF-8. The obtained magnetic ZIF-8 (M-ZIF-8-10) shows high crystallinity, high surface area (958 m2 g−1) and superparamagnetism. M-ZIF-8-10 can be used as efficient adsorbent for fast adsorption of Congo Red (CR) from water. The CR adsorption processes follow the pseudo-second-order model and the further fitting results of Langmuir isotherm model show that CR adsorption is monolayer chemisorption with a maximal adsorption capacity of 210.5 mg g−1. Besides, the results demonstrate that both of the two sulfonic groups of CR would simultaneously interact with M-ZIF-8-10. At last, in our opinion, this strategy would be feasible in other alkali-containing systems.

Abstract:In this study, we employed a straightforward in-situ synthesis strategy to fabricate multi-site adsorption functional composites known as aminated chitosan@ZIF-8 (AmCs@ZIF-8) for the efficient removal of Cu(II) and Congo red. The AmCs@ZIF-8 adsorbed Cu(II) at pH 5 and Congo red at pH 3 with excellent removal efficiency values of 94 % and 100 % respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity for Cu(II) and Congo red are obtained as 785 mg g −1 and 1156 mg g −1 , respectively. Interestingly, AmCs@ZIF-8 composites exhibited an excellent removal efficiency (>80 %) after reusing them for four sequential cycles. Analysis of the adsorption isotherm and kinetic data indicated that chemisorption primarily governed the adsorption of Cu(II) and Congo red by AmCs@ZIF-8. Furthermore, we elucidated the adsorption energy of Cu(II) and Congo red on the AmCs@ZIF-8 composite through density functional theory. Specifically, the adsorption energy values for Cu(II) with AmCs and ZIF-8 were −20.907 and −57.809 kcal·mol −1 , and −26.514 and −16.242 kcal·mol −1 for Congo red, respectively. The efficient adsorption mechanism of Cu(II) and Congo red on the AmCs@ZIF-8 composite can be attributed to the synergistic effects of chelation, electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, and hydrogen bonding through the analysis of experimental characterization and theoretical calculation. Therefore, AmCs@ZIF-8 composites elevate the adsorption capacity of Cu(II) and Congo red in a single-component system and exhibit high removal efficiency (>90 %) in the context of the Cu(II)-Congo red binary system.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are an exciting class of porous crystallized materials, which have attracted great interest in sustainable energy and environmental remediation. Magnetite (Fe3O4) is one of the best-known magnetic materials and has been extensively studied with respect to properties involving high saturation magnetization, biocompatibility and low toxicity. The combination of MOFs and Fe3O4 has shown its potential applications in drug delivery, catalysis and wastewater treatment. However, only classical porous MOFs are used to encapsulate magnetic nanoparticles, such as MIL-100(Fe), ZIF-8, UiO-66 and so on. Herein, we firstly synthesized a new MOF ZTB-1 and surveyed its applications in magnetic materials. As a result, a highly water-stable MOF-based magnetic material Fe3O4@ZTB-1 has been obtained, and it was for the first time used as an excellent adsorbent for the fast adsorption of Congo red (CR) from aqueous solutions, exhibiting an adsorption capacity of 458 mg CR per gram. The electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bond are responsible for binding of CR with Fe3O4@ZTB-1. The magnetic material Fe3O4@ZTB-1 shows a potential application in dyeing wastewater treatment.

Abstract:MIL-53(Fe)/chitosan composite hydrogel spheres were formed by chitosan (CS) coating MIL-53(Fe). The structural and physicochemical properties of the material were characterized by SEM, FTIR, XRD, TGA, BET, and Zeta potential. The adsorption properties of the adsorbents were systematically analyzed for different conditions, such as pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial concentration, and temperature. The experimental data were fitted using adsorption isotherms, adsorption kinetics, and adsorption thermodynamics models. The results show that the pseudo-first-order model and Liu model are fitted to the adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm respectively. The adsorption capacity of CR reached the maximum value of 590.8 mg g −1 at 298 K. The adsorption efficiency of the composite material for CR was high, and when 100 mg L −1 CR solution was used, 99.97% of CR could be removed by reaching adsorption equilibrium. After three times of adsorption, the recovery was still close to 85%. The adsorption mechanism is mainly the synergistic effect of pore filling, ionic interactions, and hydrogen bonding.

Abstract:Nano-CaO with high surface area of 120m(2)g(-1) has been used as adsorbents for Congo red adsorption from wastewater. The maximum adsorption capability of Congo red on nano-CaO reached 357.14mgg(-1) in 10min, while the maximum capability on commercial CaO was only 238.66mgg(-1) in 30min. In comparison with commercial CaO, some published metal oxides for Congo red adsorption such as Fe2O3, NiO, MgO, and Mn2O3, etc., the Nano-CaO exhibited much more favorable adsorptive property. In addition, the effects of pH, salt concentration, and temperature were also investigated, and these factors played significant roles for Congo red adsorption on Nano-CaO.

Abstract:The morphology and intermolecular interaction are two of the most important factors in the design of highly efficient dye adsorbent in the industry. Millimeter-sized, bead-type, bio-based lignin/chitosan (Lig/CS) adsorbent was designed for the removal of Congo red (CR), based on the electrostatic attraction, π-π stacking, and hydrogen bonding, which were synthesized through the emulsification of the chitosan/lignin mixture followed by chemical cross-linking. The effects of the lignin/chitosan mass ratio, initial pH, temperature, concentration, and contact time on the adsorption were thoroughly investigated. The highest adsorption capacity (173 mg/g) was obtained for the 20 wt% Lig/CS beads, with a removal rate of 86.5%. To investigate the adsorption mechanism and recyclability, an evaluation of the kinetic model and an adsorption/desorption experiment were conducted. The adsorption of CR on Lig/CS beads followed the type 1 pseudo-second-order model, and the removal rate for CR was still above 90% at five cycles.

Abstract:Facile separation from feed liquid is practically important for application of adsorbents, especially for powdery adsorbents. To this challenge, a co-flow microfluidic device was set up in this work to prepare a magnetic chitosan microsphere without using any surfactant or cross-linking agent. In the microfluidic preparation, a chitosan solution containing Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ was cut by the shear force of the flow of the continuous phase of isopentanol to form monodispersed droplets, which were introduced into an ammonia aqueous solution bath to obtain the magnetic microspheres. The microstructure of the magnetic chitosan microsphere was carefully characterized, and was compared with that of the neat chitosan microsphere. Our results indicate that the co-precipitated Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ form in situ magnetite Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles of 4.6 ± 1.7 nm in the matrix of chitosan, endowing the magnetic chitosan microsphere with superparamagnetic property and with 41.3 emu/g saturation magnetization. In addition, the magnetic chitosan microsphere displays only slight decrease in equilibrium adsorption capacity towards Congo red, but reveals much faster adsorption, when compared with the neat chitosan microsphere. We attribute those to the walnut-like wrinkle surface and high zeta potential of the magnetic chitosan microsphere. Therefore, our work provides a method of preparing even-sized magnetic chitosan microsphere, which can adsorb anionic dye quickly and can be facilely removed from liquid phase after adsorption, implying an excellent adsorbent candidate with great potential.

Abstract:Micro-nano metal-organic framework (MIL-68(Fe)) for efficient adsorption of azo anionic dye Congo red (CR) was successfully prepared by one-step hydrothermal method under acidic environment. And a MIL-68(Fe)/chitosan composite sponge (MIL-68(Fe)/CS) was prepared under the coating of chitosan (CS). After comparing the performance of MIL-68(Fe) and MIL-68(Fe)/CS, we focus on exploring MIL-68(Fe)/CS. It ensured the CR removal efficiency while reaching the adsorption equilibrium faster than MIL-68(Fe), and solved the defect that the powder was difficult to be stripped by water after adsorption. The physicochemical properties and surface morphology of the adsorbent were characterized by SEM, FTIR, XRD, TGA, BET, and Zeta potential. The effects of pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial solution concentration and temperature on the adsorption performance of the adsorbent were systematically analyzed. The pseudo-second-order model and the Sips model were most consistent for the adsorption process, indicating that the adsorption process of MIL-68(Fe)/chitosan composite sponge on CR is a complex physicochemical process. The removal rates of CR by MIL-68(Fe) and MIL-68(Fe)/chitosan composite sponge reached the maximum values of 99.55 % and 99.51 % at 318 K, respectively. And the maximum adsorption capacity of CR by MIL-68(Fe)/chitosan composite sponge at 318 K was 1184.16 mg·g −1 . After six cycles of adsorption and desorption, the removal rate of CR was still higher than 80 %. The synergistic effects of π-π stacking, electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding and pore filling have important effects on CR removal.

Removal of Congo Red from Aqueous Solution Using A Chitosan/Organo-Montmorillonite Nanocomposite

Abstract:To further improve the adsorption capacity of chitosan (CTS), a series of novel chitosan/organomontmorillonite nanocomposites (CTS/OMMT) were synthesized and the adsorption abilities for Congo red (CR) investigated in this study. The nanocomposites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the results indicated that an exfoliated nanostructure was formed in CTS/OMMT nanocomposites. Compared with the adsorption capacity of OMMT (192.4 mg g(-1)), CTS/OMMT with an amount of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide equal to 0.75 CEC of MMT and molar ratio of CTS to OMMT of 1:10 exhibited the higher adsorption capacity (290.8 mg g(-1)). The adsorption behaviours of OMMT and CTS/OMMT showed that the adsorption kinetics and isotherms were in good agreement with a pseudo-second-order equation and the Langmuir equation, respectively. The IR spectra revealed that a chemical interaction occurred between CTS/OMMT and CR. The adsorption capacity of CTS/ONIMT nanocomposite was higher than that of other absorbents; this study suggested that the CTS/OMMT nanocomposite could be used as an adsorbent to remove CR dye from aqueous solution.(c) 2007 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract:The quest for sustainable development and green chemistry had led to the design and synthesis of advanced adsorbent materials for efficient removal of pollutants in industrial effluents. Magnetic halloysite nanotubes with chitosan nanocomposite sponges were prepared by combining solution-mixing and freeze-drying. Magnetic@chitosan/halloysite (Fe3O4–HNT/CS) and spongelike chitosan/halloysite (HNT/CS) were used as adsorbents for the removal of Congo red dye in aqueous solution in a batch process. The as-prepared composites were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, X-ray diffraction, vibrating-sample magnetometry, thermal gravimetry–differential scanning calorimetry, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Data from kinetic study were analyzed with pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models, whereas the mechanism was analyzed using Bangham’s, Elovich’s, intraparticle, and double-exponential diffusion models. The equilibrium data were evaluated using Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin–Radushkevich isotherm models. The adsorption kinetics of dye removal followed the pseudo-first-order model with average rate constants of 0.260 and 0.196 min–1 for Fe3O4–HNT/CS and HNT/CS, respectively. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm best fitted the equilibrium data with R2 > 0.9 with maximum adsorption capacities of 41.54 and 54.49 mg g–1 obtained for HNT/CS and Fe3O4–HNT/CS, respectively. Negative values of ΔG° obtained from thermodynamic studies revealed that the adsorption process was spontaneous. The values of ΔH° and ΔS° obtained for Congo red dye removal were 69.46 and 39.54 kJ mol–1 and 240.5 and 145.1 J mol–1 K–1 for HNT/CS and Fe3O4–HNT/CS, respectively. The results indicated that CS–HNT is an excellent adsorbent; however, its magnetic modification further improved its recyclability and enhanced the performance for the removal of Congo red dye from aqueous solution.

Abstract:Due to the presence of several hydroxyl and amino groups on the surface, chitosan (CS) has been reported to be a potential candidate to solve the pollution caused by dyes in different industrial wastewater. However, it is associated with the recycling issues. Nano-Fe3O4 has the advantages of easy magnetic separation and surface functionalization, which can improve the efficiency as well as selectivity of separation. However, its tendency for agglomeration can reduce the adsorption capacity. MXene can provide suitable support for both CS and Fe3O4 to construct new 3O4@CS composites. In this study, 3O4@CSmagnetic nanosphere was synthesized by ultrasonic self-assembly to remove Congo red (CR). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy were employed to characterize the nanocomposites. According to the batch experiments, the adsorption kinetics were found to predominantly follow quasi-secondary rate kinetics. The adsorption followed Langmuir isotherm model. The adsorption process was found to be endothermic, entropy-driven, and thermodynamically spontaneous process. The adsorption capacity for CR was estimated as 620.22 mg·g−1.

Abstract:Developing inexpensive adsorbent with high removal efficiency is an important strategy to solve the issue of dye residues in wastewater. Zeolitic imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8) modified polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/chitosan (CS) composite aerogel (ZIF-8@P/CSA) was prepared through freeze-drying and in situ growth. The introduction of PVA enhanced the mechanical properties of CSA. Experimental results showed that ZIF-8@P/CSA had superior compression resilience and water stability, with a maximum adsorption capacity on Congo Red (CR) of 1216.5 mg g−1, which was obviously higher than most different adsorbents in previous reports. The adsorption process was consistent with pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm model, revealing chemisorption was the rate-determining step and adsorption process was monolayer adsorption. After 5 adsorption-desorption cycles, ZIF-8@P/CSA still showed excellent stability and reusability to remove CR with a removal rate above 91%. This study provided a new idea to remove CR from dye wastewater by the combination of ZIF-8 and polysaccharide aerogels.

Abstract:Highlights•New ZIF-8/MWCNTs-COOH nanoadsorbents were fabricated by adjusting the reaction sequence.•The nanoadsorbent exhibited a high adsorption capacity for Congo red and tetracycline.•The nanoadsorbent possessed excellent renewability.•The possible mechanisms for the removal of CR were proposed.The removal of organic pollutants was examined by new zeolitic imidazolate multi-walled carbon nanotubes (ZIF-8/MWCNTs-COOH) nanoadsorbents, which were prepared via controlling the reaction sequence of MWCNTs-COOH with the precursors of ZIF-8. Structural morphology and chemical composition characterizations confirmed the successful preparation of ZIF-8/MWCNTs-COOH nanoadsorbents. The obtained samples manifested a preferable adsorption capacity for Congo red with the maximum adsorption capacity of 1185.58 mg g–1 with an adsorption removal rate of 97.93% at equilibrium adsorption. Further analyses indicated that the adsorption process conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The thermodynamic analyses were depicted as endothermic, entropy-increasing, and spontaneous. The effects of pH value, interfering ions, and dosage on the adsorption properties are systematically explored. The nanoadsorbent can be expediently reused for eight cycles without a prominent reduction in adsorption activity. The improved performance and high reusability can be ascribed to the increasing specific surface, the presence of electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, and π–π interaction between ZIF-8/MWCNTs-COOH and organic molecules. In addition, the prepared composites also showed a better adsorption performance for tetracycline with the equilibrium adsorption capacity of 471.22 mg g–1 compared to pure ZIF-8 and MWCNTs-COOH.Graphical abstractDownload : Download high-res image (70KB)Download : Download full-size image
