Abstract:Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia holds great promise for developing green technologies for electrochemical ammonia energy conversion and storage. Considering that real nitrate resources often exhibit low concentrations, it is challenging to achieve high activity in low-concentration nitrate solutions due to the competing reaction of the hydrogen evolution reaction, let alone considering the catalyst lifetime. Herein, we present a high nitrate reduction performance electrocatalyst based on a Co nanosheet structure with a gradient dispersion of Ru, which yields a high NH3 Faraday efficiency of over 93% at an industrially relevant NH3 current density of 1.0 A/cm2 in 2000 ppm NO3- electrolyte, while maintaining good stability for 720 h under -300 mA/cm2. The electrocatalyst maintains high activity even in 62 ppm NO3- electrolyte. Electrochemical studies, density functional theory, electrochemical in situ Raman, and Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy confirm that the gradient concentration design of the catalyst reduces the reaction energy barrier to improve its activity and suppresses the catalyst evolution caused by the expansion of the Co lattice to enhance its stability. The gradient-driven design in this work provides a direction for improving the performance of electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia. Achieving stable and high-activity nitrate electroreduction to ammonia in low concentrations nitrate is critical but challenging. Here, the authors present a Co-based electrocatalyst with gradient-doped Ru atoms, showing a continuous ammonia production at -1000 mA/cm2 in 2000 ppm nitrate electrolyte.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic low‐concentration NO conversion can effectively alleviate the artificially destroyed N‐cycle balance. RuCo alloy nanoparticles in the hexagonal close‐packed phase are synthesized and demonstrated as an electrocatalyst for efficient NO electroreduction. It exhibits a record‐high Faraday efficiency of 99.2% and an NH3 yield of 77.76 μg h−1 mgcat−1 at a low potential. With this RuCo electrocatalyst, a Zn‐NO battery is assembled to simultaneously achieve NO removal, NH3 synthesis, and power output. Electrocatalytic reduction of nitric oxide (NO) to ammonia (NH3) represents a potential solution for improving the disrupted nitrogen cycle balance. Unfortunately, designing efficient electrocatalysts for NO reduction reaction (NORR) remains a notable challenge, especially at low concentrations. Herein, a displacement‐alloying strategy is reported to successfully induce the phase transition of Co nanoparticles supported on carbon nanosheets from face‐centered cubic (fcc) to hexagonal close‐packed (hcp) structure through Ru incorporation. The obtained RuCo alloy with hcp phase structure (hcp‐RuCo) exhibits apparent NORR activity with a record‐high Faraday efficiency of 99.2% and an NH3 yield of 77.76 μg h−1 mgcat−1 at −0.1 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode at a NO concentration of 1 vol %, surpassing Co nanoparticles with fcc phase structure and most reported catalysts. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the excellent NORR activity of hcp‐RuCo can be attributed to the optimized electronic structure of Co site and lowered energy barrier of the potential rate‐determining step through phase transition. Furthermore, the assembled Zn‐NO battery using hcp‐RuCo as the cathode achieves a power density of 2.33 mW cm−2 and an NH3 yield of 45.94 μg h−1 mgcat−1. This work provides a promising research perspective for low‐concentration NO conversion.

Abstract:This work investigates defect engineering for nitrate reduction to ammonia. Here, flame spray pyrolysis for the integration of Ru into the Co3O4 lattice, coupled with electroreduction conditioning treatment is utilized. This controlled defecting approach results in increased NH4+ production at 10 at.% Ru loading. Amidst these growing sustainability concerns, producing NH4+ via electrochemical NO3− reduction reaction (NO3RR) emerges as a promising alternative to the conventional Haber‐Bosch process. In a pioneering approach, this study introduces Ru incorporation into Co3O4 lattices at the nanoscale and further couples it with electroreduction conditioning (ERC) treatment as a strategy to enhance metal oxide reducibility and induce oxygen vacancies, advancing NH4+ production from NO3RR. Here, supported by a suite of ex situ and in situ characterization measurements, the findings reveal that Ru enrichment promotes Co species reduction and oxygen vacancy formation. Further, as evidenced by the theoretical calculations, Ru integration lowers the energy barrier for oxygen vacancy formation, thereby facilitating a more energy‐efficient NO3RR‐to‐NH4+ pathway. Optimal catalytic activity is realized with a Ru loading of 10 at.% (named 10Ru/Co3O4), achieving a high NH4+ production rate (98 nmol s−1 cm−2), selectivity (97.5%) and current density (≈100 mA cm−2) at −1.0 V vs RHE. The findings not only provide insights into defect engineering via the incorporation of secondary sites but also lay the groundwork for innovative catalyst design aimed at improving NH4+ yield from NO3RR. This research contributes to the ongoing efforts to develop sustainable electrochemical processes for nitrogen cycle management.

Abstract:Electrochemical converting NO 2 − into NH 3 (NO 2 RR) holds an enormous prospect to attain efficient NH 3 electrosynthesis and polluted NO 2 − mitigation. Herein, we report single-atom Co alloyed Ru (Co 1 Ru) as an efficient and durable NO 2 RR catalyst. Extensive experimental and theoretical investigations reveal that single-atom Co alloying of Ru enables the construction of Co 1 Ru heteronuclear active sites to synergistically promote NO 2 − activation/hydrogenation while suppressing the competitive H 2 evolution, rendering the greatly enhanced activity and selectivity of Co 1 Ru towards the NO 2 RR. Consequently, Co 1 Ru assembled within a flow cell exhibits an impressive NH 3 yield rate of 2379.2 μmol·h −1 ·cm −2 with an NH 3 -Faradaic efficiency of 92% at a high current density of 415.9 mA·cm −2 , which is among the highest NO 2 RR performances reported to date.

Abstract:Developing high-efficiency electrocatalysts for the selective reduction of nitrate to valuable ammonia is of great significance. Herein, Pd–PdO-modified Co3O4 nanowire arrays on nickel foam (PdCoO/NF) are fabricated by a facile cation-exchange reaction. Pd and PdO can facilitate the generation of adsorbed hydrogen, and abundant oxygen vacancies can promote nitrate activation. Therefore, the PdCoO/NF exhibits a superior nitrate conversion rate (89.3%), Faradaic efficiency (88.6%), and ammonium selectivity (95.3%) at −1.3 V versus a saturated calomel electrode. The source of the produced ammonia is confirmed by 15N isotope labeling experiments and 1H magnetic resonance. Abstract:Ru@C3N4/Cu Tandem electrocatalyst are fabricated by in situ oxidation and two‐step pyrolysis process, which exhibit superior electrocatalytic activity and selectivity toward Ammonia synthesis. The excellent NO3−RR performance is mainly attributed to the dual active sites from the Ru and Cu species. Electroreduction of nitrate to ammonia reaction (NO3−RR) is considered as a promising carbon‐free energy technique, which can eliminate nitrate from waste‐water also produce value‐added ammonia. However, it remains a challenge for achieving satisfied ammonia selectivity and Faraday efficiency (FE) due to the complex multiple‐electron reduction process. Herein, a novel Tandem electrocatalyst that Ru dispersed on the porous graphitized C3N4 (g‐C3N4) encapsulated with self‐supported Cu nanowires (denoted as Ru@C3N4/Cu) for NO3−RR is presented. As expected, a high ammonia yield of 0.249 mmol h−1 cm−2 at −0.9 V and high FENH3 of 91.3% at −0.8 V versus RHE can be obtained, while achieving excellent nitrate conversion (96.1%) and ammonia selectivity (91.4%) in neutral solution. In addition, density functional theory (DFT) calculations further demonstrate that the superior NO3−RR performance is mainly resulted from the synergistic effect between the Ru and Cu dual‐active sites, which can significantly enhance the adsorption of NO3− and facilitate hydrogenation, as well as suppress the hydrogen evolution reaction, thus lead to highly improved NO3−RR performances. This novel design strategy would pave a feasible avenue for the development of advanced NO3−RR electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Ammonia (NH3) is an essential ingredient for fertilizer production and a carbon-free energy carrier for engineering applications. Searching for novel electrocatalysts with low onset potential, high selectivity and excellent stability is still one of the most attractive and challenging topics. Here, based on the conductor-like screening model and first-principles calculations, we systematically investigated nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) pathways occurring on iron-based phosphide monolayers. It can be found that Mo-doped Fe2P and Fe3P monolayers can efficiently promote the NRR with onset potentials of -0.30 V and -0.17 V, respectively, especially for the Mo-doped Fe3P monolayer, which has the lowest onset potential to date. Electronic analysis shows that the Mo atom doping can significantly enhance the degree of matching between the d-orbitals of transition metal atoms and the p-orbitals of the N-2 molecule, contributing to the activation of dinitrogen. Furthermore, Mo and Fe atoms provide bimetallic active sites, helping to avoid the linear relationship during the NRR pathway. Besides, the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is suppressed because of larger onset potentials and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations were performed to identify the high stabilities of the Mo-doped monolayers. This work offers useful insights into the design of high-performance electrocatalysts for the NRR and provides guidance for future experimental and theoretical investigations.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic nitrate (NO3-) reduction reaction (eNO3-RR) to ammonia under ambient conditions is deemed a sustainable route for wastewater treatment and a promising alternative to the Haber-Bosch process. However, there is still a lack of efficient electrocatalysts to achieve high NH3 production performance at wastewater-relevant low NO3- concentrations. Herein, we report a Pd74Ru26 bimetallic nanocrystal (NC) electrocatalyst capable of exhibiting an average NH3 FE of ∼100% over a wide potential window from 0.1 to -0.3 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE) at a low NO3- concentration of 32.3 mM. The average NH3 yield rate at -0.3 V can reach 16.20 mg h-1 cm-2. Meanwhile, Pd74Ru26 also demonstrates excellent electrocatalytic stability for over 110 h. Experimental investigations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that the electronic structure modulation between Pd and Ru favors the optimization of NO3- transport with respect to single components. Along the *NO3 reduction pathway, the synergy between Pd and Ru can also lower the energy barrier of the rate-determining steps (RDSs) on Ru and Pd, which are the protonation of *NO2 and *NO, respectively. Finally, this unique alloying design achieves a high-level dynamic equilibrium of adsorption and coupling between *H and various nitrogen intermediates during eNO3-RR.

Abstract:Ammonia (NH3) is not only an essential feedstock for fertilizer, but also deemed as a potential hydrogen carrier. Worldwide industrial-scale NH3 synthesis relies heavily on the Haber-Bosch process, which involves harsh operation under reaction conditions. In addition, nitrate is prevalent in groundwater and surface water, causing serious pollution. Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NITRR), a sustainable ammonia synthesis technique, is the most potential alternative to the traditional Haber-Bosch process. we combined the noble metal Ru by impregnation based on Cu-based materials that can inhibit HER to prepare Cu/Cu2O/RuO2@C composites. Surprisingly, the NH3 yield of Cu/Cu2O/RuO2@C composites prepared by NITRR reached 209.44 μmol∙cm-2∙h-1 and 82.40% Faraday efficiency at -0.6 V (vs. RHE). Such a high reduction activity is attributed to the synergistic effect between Ru heteroatoms and the Cu-based material. In addition, Cu/Cu2O/RuO2@C exhibited good cycling stability and repeatability. This work highlights the potential importance of electrocatalyst design, contributing to the research and exploration of related materials.

Abstract:The electrochemical nitrate (NO3-) reduction reaction (NITRR) to ammonia (NH3) offers an environmentally friendly alternative for NH3 synthesis but suffers from limited NH3 yield and low Faradaic efficiency (FE) due to the sluggish kinetics of the hydrogenation process. Herein, nanoporous Cu/CoOOH heterostructure is reported as an efficient electrocatalyst for NITRR. The catalyst achieves a high NH3 yield rate of 275.9 mu mol h(-1) cm(-2) (689.8 mmol h(-1) g(cat)(-1)) and 836.8 mu mol h(-1) cm(-2) (2092.0 mmol h(-1) g(cat)(-1)), with corresponding FE values of 85.3 and 91.5% in 200 and 1400 ppm of NO3--N electrolyte, respectively. In situ Raman spectra reveal that the Cu/CoOOH heterostructure is derived from synergistic chemical/electrochemical redox reaction between NO3- and the CuCo alloy during the NITRR process. Theoretical simulations indicate that Cu/CoOOH exhibits enhanced *NO2 affinity and reduces the energy barrier in the rate-determining *NO2H formation step, effectively facilitating NO3- reduction to NH3.

Abstract:The electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NITRR) is an appealing method for ammonia synthesis, owing to the ambient conditions as well as its abundant sources, low dissociation energy, and high solubility of nitrate. Herein, ultrathin CoO x nanosheets with abundant surface oxygen are designed as a low-cost NITRR catalyst, which delivers an ultrahigh ammonia yield of 82.4 ± 4.8 mg h–1 mgcat –1 with a Faradaic efficiency of 93.4 ± 3.8% at −0.3 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode. Theoretical calculation reveals that the surface oxygen on cobalt sites can stabilize the adsorbed hydrogen on cobalt oxide, which hampers the evolution of hydrogen and leads to an enhanced NITRR activity. This work demonstrates that surface modification plays a critical role in suppressing the HER and facilitating the NITRR through a NHO pathway with a lower energy barrier.

Regioselective Doping into Atomically Aligned Core–Shell Structures for Electrocatalytic Reduction of Nitrate to Ammonia

Abstract:The Cu─CoO/Co(OH)2 doped core/shell structures obtained by in situ electrochemical activation exhibit outstanding performance in electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia. Combining the in situ spectroscopic characterizations with theoretical calculations, it is illustrated that core/shell configuration and Cu dopants can accelerate electron transfer and enhance the adsorption of key intermediates. The catalysts can also serve as the cathode for high‐performing Zn−NO3− batteries. The electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO3−RR) presents an environmentally friendly approach for efficient NO3− pollutant removal and ammonia (NH3) production, compared to the conventional Haber–Bosch approach. While core/shell engineering has demonstrated its potential in enhancing NO3−RR performance, significant synthetic challenges and limited shell layer modification capabilities impede the exploration of high‐performance NO3−RR core/shell catalysts. Herein, CuCoO/Co(OH)2 core/shell structure via in situ electrochemical activation is synthesized. The catalyst delivers a maximum NH3 Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 94.7% at −0.5 VRHE with excellent durability and selectivity for NH3 over a wide range of potentials in NO3−RR, surpassing the electrocatalytic performance of both undoped shell and core components. The outstanding performance Cu─CoO/Co(OH)2 is ascribed to the enhanced charge transfer, stabilization of key reaction intermediates, and regulation of hydrogen adsorption over Cu‐doped core/shell structure. Furthermore, the assembled Zn−NO3− battery device attains a peak current density exceeding 32 mA cm−2 and an NH3 yield of up to 145.4 μmol h−1 cm−2. The work offers a novel core/shell engineering strategy in electrocatalytic NO3−RR and sheds light on the doping effects on the electrochemical NH3 synthesis.
