Abstract:Ammonia (NH3) is an essential ingredient for fertilizer production and a carbon-free energy carrier for engineering applications. Searching for novel electrocatalysts with low onset potential, high selectivity and excellent stability is still one of the most attractive and challenging topics. Here, based on the conductor-like screening model and first-principles calculations, we systematically investigated nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) pathways occurring on iron-based phosphide monolayers. It can be found that Mo-doped Fe2P and Fe3P monolayers can efficiently promote the NRR with onset potentials of -0.30 V and -0.17 V, respectively, especially for the Mo-doped Fe3P monolayer, which has the lowest onset potential to date. Electronic analysis shows that the Mo atom doping can significantly enhance the degree of matching between the d-orbitals of transition metal atoms and the p-orbitals of the N-2 molecule, contributing to the activation of dinitrogen. Furthermore, Mo and Fe atoms provide bimetallic active sites, helping to avoid the linear relationship during the NRR pathway. Besides, the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is suppressed because of larger onset potentials and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations were performed to identify the high stabilities of the Mo-doped monolayers. This work offers useful insights into the design of high-performance electrocatalysts for the NRR and provides guidance for future experimental and theoretical investigations.

Abstract:The Fe-N-C material is a promising non-noble-metal electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Further improvement on the ORR activity is highly desired in order to replace Pt/C in acidic media. Herein, we developed a new-type of single-atom Fe-N-C electrocatalyst, in which Fe-Nx active sites were modified by P atoms. The half-wave potential of the optimized material reached 0.858 V, which is 23 mV higher than that of the pristine one in a 0.1 mol L−1 HClO4 solution. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that P doping can reduce the thermodynamic over potential of the rate determining step and consequently improve the ORR activity.
The synergy between oxidized molybdenum and covalent triazine frameworks for electrocatalytic nitrogen fixation

Abstract:Although Mo-dependent nitrogenase and synthetic molecular complexes have attracted widespread attention in electrochemical nitrogen reduction, the activity of Mo-based catalysts for nitrogen reduction is low. Herein, molybdenum oxide nanoparticles were supported on charge-modulated conjugated triazine frameworks (Mo/CTF-I) via ion exchange reaction. Compared with Mo/CTF, the modified Mo/CTF-I maintains high specific surface area and microporous structure after metal loading and thermal treatment, and exposes high density MoOx as active sites. This strong interaction between MoOx and CTF-I induces the electron transfer from Mo to support to form MoOx with a valence state of 5+ and lowers the energy barrier to transfer the donated electrons to the empty anti-bonding π orbitals of N≡N. Electrochemical measurements proved that 5% Mo/CTF-I exhibited the highest NRR activity with a faradaic efficiency of 27.3% and an NH3 yield rate of 7.23 mg h-1 gcat.-1 at -0.405 V vs. RHE.

Abstract:Electrochemical conversion of N-2 to NH3 under ambient conditions is a promising and environmentally friendly route compared with the CO2-emitting and energy-intensive Haber-Bosch process. Nevertheless, due to ultrahigh stability of N-2, it is urgent to explore efficient catalysts to weaken and activate the N N bond. Here, we report the Mo-doped iron phosphide (Mo-FeP) nanosphere as a valid transition-metal-based catalyst for electrochemical N-2-to-NH3 fixation under ambient conditions. This catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic performance with a NH4+ yield rate (13.1 mu g h(-1) mg(-1)) and Faradaic efficiency (7.49%) at -0.3 and -0.2 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), respectively. However, the FeP catalyst without doped Mo species displays weak catalytic performance. We found that the better catalytic performance of Mo-FeP might be due to the doping of Mo species, which is favorable for the polarization of adsorbed N-2 molecules, making the N N bond more viable to dissociate.
W/Mo-polyoxometalate-derived electrocatalyst for high-efficiency nitrogen fixation

Abstract:Ammonia is the feedstock chemical for most fertilizers and the alternative of renewable energy carriers. Environmentally benign electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) under mild conditions has been recognized as one of the most attractive strategies for N2 fixation. Herein, inspired by Mo-based nitrogenase, W/Mo-doping electrocatalysts were developed with mixed-metal polyoxometalate H3PW6Mo6O40 as the precursor for high performance electrocatalytic NRR. Trace amount of Pt was transplanted on the surface of W/ via in situ electroplating treatment to further improve the NRR performance. The resulting Pt-W/ achieves excellent performance for NRR with a high NH3 yield of 79.2 µg h−1 mgcat−1 due to the multicomponent synergistic effect in the composite catalyst. The Pt-W/ represents the first example of highly efficient NRR electraocatalyst derived from mixed-metal polyoxometalate, which exhibits outstanding stability confirmed by the constant catalytic performance over 24 h chronoamperometric test. This finding opens a new avenue to construct highly efficient NRR electrocatalyst by employing mixed metal polyoxometalate as the precursor under ambient conditions.

Mo2P Monolayer as a Superior Electrocatalyst for Urea Synthesis from Nitrogen and Carbon Dioxide Fixation: A Computational Study

Abstract:Urea synthesis through the simultaneous electrocatalytic reduction of N2 and CO2 molecules under ambient conditions holds great promises as a sustainable alternative to its industrial production, in which the development of stable, highly efficient, and highly selective catalysts to boost the chemisorption, activation, and coupling of inert N2 and CO2 molecules remains rather challenging. Herein, by means of density functional theory (DFT) computations, we proposed a new class of 2D nanomaterials, namely, transition‐metal phosphide monolayers (TM2P, TM = Ti, Fe, Zr, Mo, and W), as the potential electrocatalysts for urea production. Our results showed that these TM2P materials exhibit outstanding stability and excellent metallic properties. Interestingly, the Mo2P monolayer was screened out as the best catalyst for urea synthesis due to its small kinetic energy barrier (0.35 eV) for C‐N coupling, low limiting potential (‐0.39 V), and significant suppressing effects on the competing side reactions. The outstanding catalytic activity of the Mo2P monolayer can be ascribed to its optimal adsorption strength with the key *NCON species due to its moderate positive charges on the Mo active sites. Our findings not only propose a novel catalyst with high‐efficiency and high‐selectivity for urea production but also further widen the potential applications of metal phosphides in electrocatalysis.

Abstract:Transition metal oxides are suitable for photocatalytic nitrogen reduction (pNRR) due to their properties of narrow band gap and high energy density. Still, it is also limited by the defects of high photogenerated carrier recombination and low adsorption capacity of nitrogen molecules, which hinder the further improvement of the activity. For high carrier recombination and low activation rate of the nitrogen molecule, herein, Fe-doped MoO 2 catalyst (Fe−MoO 2 ) was synthesized for pNRR. Combined with the experimental characterization and theoretical calculation, it shows that the doping of Fe atoms, one hand, improves the conduction band position of MoO 2 and enhances the reduction ability, which is favorable to nitrogen reduction. On the other hand, it not only enhances the adsorption of Mo sites and N 2 molecules, but also changes the surface electronic structure and promotes the electron transfer from MoO 2 to Fe sites, and the two act synergistically to adsorb and activate nitrogen more effectively. The activity of Fe−MoO 2 for pNRR is as high as 96.62 μmol g −1 h −1 , which is about 2.5 times that of pristine MoO 2 , and the activity decreases by only 10% after three cycles.

Abstract:Abstract Electrocatalyst plays animportant role in electrochemical ammonia synthesis by determining the nitrogen reduction reaction pathway. Featuring the inherent half‐filled 3d orbitals, ion‐based alloy electrocatalysts have been attracting much more attention owing to the controllable driving force to adsorb and activate N≡N bonds. Besides supplying unoccupied d ‐orbital to accommodate lone‐pair electrons to facilitate nitrogen adsorption, donating d ‐orbital electrons to nitrogen antibonding orbitals to dissociate N≡N bond is demandedas well. By palladium (Pd) to synthesize PdFe 3 nano‐alloy, numerous Fe 3d orbitals can be reconstructed via charge polarization between Fe and Pd, simultaneously lowering corresponding work functions. Meanwhile, the positively charged Fesites in PdFe 3 can strengthen suppress the proton adsorption by electrostatic repulsion. A considerably optimized ammonia production rate of 29.07 μg h −1 mg cat. −1 and Faradic efficiency of 22.8% are accomplished at a low overpotential of −0.2 V vs. RHE. Density functional theory combined with in‐situ ATR‐FTIR results confirmthe electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction follows the associative distalmechanism and the electron‐deficient Fe induced through Pd facilitates significantly lowering the first‐step‐protonation energy barrier of only 0.07 eV ( * N 2 + * H → * NNH).

Abstract:Modulating the surface structure and intrinsic activity of iron phosphides (FeP) is of great importance to improve their oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity. In this work, aminotrimethylene phosphonic acid (ATMP) and melamine (MA) were introduced as acid and base ligand respectively to fabricate hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOF)-like precursor (ATMP-MA). After high-temperature treatment, the obtained FeP supported on 3D nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P)-doped petaloid carbon nanosheet (FeP/NPC) displayed the desired improved ORR performance. An improved onset potential (0.922 V vs. RHE) and diffusion limiting current (5.480 mA cm−2) could be realized, superior to those of Pt/C (0.911 V, 5.380 mA cm−2). Moreover, ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopycharacterization consistently revealed that the proper P and N doping could effectively regulate the electronic structure, promote electron transport, and lower the d-band center position of Fe. This work may streamline the strategy of transition metal phosphides with enhanced reactive activity for ORR.

Abstract:The efficiency of the nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) is limited by the stability of N 2 and the sluggish reaction. In this work, a method to improve the NRR performance by modulating the Mo 5+ content through A-site M doping is proposed. We synthesized A-site M (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) doped La 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 by a hydrothermal method. The enhanced electron-donating capacity of M (Fe > Co > Ni > Cu > Zn) facilitates the conversion of Mo 6+ to Mo 5+ . The obtained order of Mo 5+ percentage is (Fe: 52% > Co: 39% > Ni: 32% > Cu: 21% > Zn: 18%), which was proved by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Importantly, the percentage of Mo 5+ is positively correlated with the NH 3 yield rate, faradaic efficiency (FE), and N 2 adsorption energy. This correlation is because Mo 5+ activates the N 2 and promotes the hydrogenation reaction. Accordingly, the Fe-doped La 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 (Fe–LaMo) exhibits the highest Mo 5+ content and presents advanced NRR performance (30.4 μg h −1 mg cat −1 , 3.6%). The effort of Mo 5+ is discussed. Meanwhile, the percentage of Mo 5+ can be controlled by transition metal doping, which enables the modulation of the catalytic performance.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) for artificial ammonia synthesis under mild conditions has been considered as a promising alternative to the conventional Haber–Bosch method. The highly desired efficient NRR still faced with the mulriple challenges of adsorption and activation of N 2 and limited Faraday efficiency. Here, Fe-doped Bi 2 MoO 6 nanosheets fabricated by one step synthesis exhibits high NH 3 yield rate of 71.01 μg·h −1 ·mg −1 and Faraday Efficiency of 80.12%. The decreased electron density of Bi in collaboration with Lewis acid active sites on Fe-doped Bi 2 MoO 6 , jointly enhance the adsorption and activation of Lewis basic N 2 . Benefited from surface texture optimization and the superior ability of N 2 adsorption and activation, the increasing density of effective active sites greatly improve the NRR behavior. This work provides new opportunities for developing efficient and highly selective catalysts for NH 3 synthesis via NRR.

Computational Design of Single Mo Atom Anchored Defective Boron Phosphide Monolayer as a High‐performance Electrocatalyst for the Nitrogen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:Catalytic reduction of molecular dinitrogen (N2) to ammonia (NH3) is one of the most important and challenging industrial reactions. Electrochemical reduction is considered as an energy‐saving technology for artificial ambient nitrogen fixation, which is emerging as an optimal potential sustainable strategy to substitute for the Haber–Bosch process. However, this process demands efficient catalysts for the N2 reduction reaction (NRR). Here, by means of first‐principles calculations, we systematically explored the potential electrocatalytic performance of single transition metal atoms (Pd, Ag, Rh, Cu, Ti, Mo, Mn, Zn, Fe, Co, Ru, and Pt) embedded in monolayer defective boron phosphide (TMs/BP) monolayer with a phosphorus monovacancy for ambient NH3 production. Among them, the Mo/BP exhibits the best catalytic performance for ambient reduction of N2 through the typical enzymatic and consecutive reaction pathways with an activation barrier of 0.68 eV, indicating that Mo/BP is an efficient catalyst for N2 fixation. We believe that this work could provide a new avenue of ambient NH3 synthesis by using the designed single‐atom electrocatalysts.

Optimized Intermediates Adsorption Configuration on Co-Doped Fe2P@NiP2 Heterojunction Interface for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Nitrate-To-Ammonia Conversion

Abstract:The extraction of ammonia (NH3) through electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO3 -RR) represents a sustainable avenue in NH3 generation and utilization. However, the catalytic efficiency of the NO3 -RR is hindered by the sluggish kinetics. This study first theoretically found that phosphide-based heterostructure can alter the adsorption structure of intermediates in the nitrate-to-ammonia process, thereby achieving precise regulation of the energy barrier in the rate-determining step. Based on theoretical design, a novel Co-doped Fe2P@NiP2 heterojunction catalyst is successfully synthesized, which deliver a notable NH3 yield rate of 0.395 mmol h-1 cm-2 at -0.7 V versus RHE, as well as a remarkable ammonia Faraday efficiency of 97.2% at -0.6 V versus RHE. Experimental and theoretical results further confirm that redistributing electrons and shifting the center of the d-band upwards through interfacial doping modulate intermediates adsorption strength and inhibition of hydrogen evolution, leading to excellent performance in NO3 --to-NH3. Further integrating the Co-Fe2P@NiP2 catalyst into a Zn-nitrate battery exhibits a substantial voltage output of 1.49 V and a commendable power density of 13.2 mW cm-2. The heteroatom-doped heterojunction strategy provides a versatile route for developing advanced catalysts, thereby broadening the horizons of electrocatalytic methodologies for nitrate reduction and ammonia synthesis.

Abstract:In contrast to the energy-consuming Haber-Bosch process, ammonia synthesis by electrocatalysis under ambient conditions is an efficient and environmentally friendly method. In this work, through first principles calculations, the potential of the four dual-atom FeTM (TM=Fe, Mo, Co, and V) anchored Graphyne (FeTM@GY) as efficient nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) catalysts is systematically investigated. Among them, FeMo@GY is the most promising with excellent NRR catalytic activity, high ability to suppress the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and good stability. Moreover, NRR prefers to the maximum pathway with the calculated onset potentials of -0.27 V for FeMo@GY. This work not only suggests that FeMo@GY hold great promises as efficient, low-cost, and stable dual-atom catalysts for NRR, but also further provides a guiding idea for the design of efficient NRR catalysts.

Single Faceted Two-Dimensional Mo2C Electrocatalyst for Highly Efficient Nitrogen Fixation

Abstract:Electrocatalytic reduction of N-2 to NH3 under an ambient atmosphere is highly desirable and extremely critical for energy-efficient nitrogen utilization. Inspired by the natural MoFe protein-based enzyme, the nitrogenase, we exploited this electrochemical process with a unique two-dimensional catalyst, namely, molybdenum carbide (Mo2C). The catalyst is synthesized through a chemical vapor deposition method, with a highly orientated (200) facet of the alpha-Mo2C phase. A remarkable Faradaic efficiency as high as 40.2% has been achieved on the (200) faceted alpha-Mo2C during the nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). Density functional theory calculations confirm that rate-determining steps *NNH2 -> NNH3 and *NH -> *NH2 experience a low energy barrier on the (200) surface following the proton-electron coupled, distal associated mechanism. To protect Mo from leaching during the NRR process, we also grew layers of graphene on top of Mo2C, forming a chemically enduring two-dimensional heterostructured electrode.
FeMo-N nanosheet arrays supported on nickel foam for efficient electrocatalytic reduction of N2 to NH3 at ambient condition

Abstract:Transition metal nitrogenous complexes have been extensively studied for electrochemical synthesis of ammonia due to their great capabilities in adsorbing and activating nitrogen molecules, yet the improvement of their catalytic performance is still a big challenge. Herein, a series of novel bimetallic Fe, Mo-N nanosheet arrays (FeMo-N) supported on nickel foam were fabricated through a facile hydrothermal-pyrolysis method, which were used as the electrocatalysts for nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). It was discovered that the catalyst Fe1Mo1-N exhibited a promising performance with a NH3 yield rate 46.64 μg mg-1cat. h-1 and a Faradaic Efficiency (FE) 1.12% at -0.8 V vs. RHE, which also demonstrated an excellent selectivity and thermal stability. The specific two-dimensional nanosheet morphology of catalyst was believed to be the major reason contributing to the prominent electrochemical performance. The XPS characterization and NH3 yield study at different N contents in M-N bond further revealed that FeMo-N species are the primary active centers for NRR, and the N content forming the M-N bond is closely related to the catalytic activity.

Abstract:Electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) is an efficient technology to replace the Haber-Bosch process to realize the transform from N2 to NH3 with the sustainable electricity under ambient conditions. However, the electrochemical NRR is a great challenge due to the process facing the problems of low N2 molecules dissoluted into the electrolyte, exposing to the strong competition reaction from hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), needing high energy to break the stable N≡N bond, requiring 6 proton-coupled electron transfer with high energy barrier, which leads to low NH3 yield and Faraday efficiency (FENH3) and hardly to satisfy the massive demand of NH3 production. Herein, we comprehensively summarize the recent advances in Fe and Mo based (two of necessary elements in biological nitrogen fixation) NRR electrocatalysts. In details, the NRR reaction mechanism, Fe-based catalysts, Mo-based catalysts and Fe&Mo based catalysts are reviewed. Moreover, the influence of morphology, chemical composition and microstructure of electrocatalysts on their NRR properties have also been discussed. Finally, the prospects of electrochemical NRR and the challenges to the future are summarized.

Abstract:Heteroatom doping plays an essential role in improving the catalytic performance of electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, how to regulate heteroatom doping remains a significant challenge. This paper develops an efficient strategy by using a novel versatile chelating ligand to enhance P loading and expose more metal single Fe atom active sites of FeN 4 P-C catalyst. The electron distribution of active center is considerably changed by P doping, which significantly influences the catalytic ORR performance. The dopant P in the FeN 4 P-C catalyst induces a small number of d-electrons from t2g-orbitals around the Fermi level, making the interaction between Fe active site and O 2 slightly more robust than in the FeN 4 -C catalyst, as studied by DFT calculations. The as-prepared FeN 4 P-C catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic ORR activity in both acidic (with a half-wave potential of 0.760 V vs. RHE) and basic (with a half-wave potential of 0.885 V vs. RHE) conditions, which are superior to those of the commercial Pt/C (20 wt %) catalyst. Furthermore, this catalyst also demonstrates outstanding stability and good hydrogen peroxide and methanol tolerance. A Zinc-air battery(ZAB) assembled using the cathode catalyst has validated the high performance of this catalyst. This study provides an efficient method for generating well-defined single-atom active sites to improve catalytic performance and paves the way to identify coordinated single metal atom sites for electrocatalysis applications.

Abstract:To perform the electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) under milder conditions for sustainable ammonia production, electrocatalysts should exhibit high selectivity, activity, and durability. However, the key restrictions are the highly stable N≡N triple bond and the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), which make it difficult to adsorb and activate N2 on the surface of electrocatalysts, leading to a low ammonia yield and Faraday efficiency. Inspired by the enzymatic nitrogenase process and using the Fe-Mo as the active center, here we report supported Fe2Mo3O8/XC-72 as an effective and durable electrocatalyst for the NRR. Fe2Mo3O8/XC-72 exhibited NRR activity with an NH3 yield of 30.4 µg·h−1·mg−1 (−0.3 V) and a Faraday efficiency of 8.2% (−0.3 V). Theoretical calculations demonstrated that the electrocatalytic nitrogen fixation mechanism involved the Fe atom in the Fe2Mo3O8/XC-72 electrocatalyst acting as the main active site in the enzymatic pathway (⋆NH2 → ⋆NH3), which activated nitrogen molecules and promoted the NRR performance.
