Abstract:The friction behavior of high-purity titanium in microscale was experimentally investigated by using atomic force microscopy to scan two neighboring grains with different crystalline orientations across the grain boundary. The results indicated that there were obvious friction contrast (FG1/FG2) between the two neighboring grains. The friction contrast became more obvious when higher normal load was applied, and this trend could be well reproduced by using the DMT model. Based on this, the interfacial shear strength was identified as the main factor causing the friction contrast. Higher scan velocity reduced the friction, which was regarded as the result of the decreased ability to maintain a stable capillary bridge in ambient atmosphere. However, the scan velocity had no significant effect on the friction contrast.
